3INTRODUCTION TO THE OCUS® PORTABLE WHOLE SLIDE IMAGE SCANNER
The Grundium Ocus® is a professional imaging instrument for digitizing microscope slides. The device is used in in
vitro diagnostics, which aims to gather information about the physiological or pathological state of the patient based
on the specimens derived from the human body. The device produces image data, which medical professionals can
use as input information when making patient diagnosis or therapeutic measures.
Grundium Ocus® is CE marked according to EU 2017/746 regulation for in vitro diagnostic (IVD) medical devices.
Ocus® technology has been granted U.S. Patents No. 10,341,551 and 10,564,408.
Ocus® design has been granted U.S. Patent No. D872789.
Important Notice: In the USA, Grundium Ocus® is for research use only (RUO) and not for use in diagnostic
procedures.
Important Notice: The functionality of the scanner must be verified every time before critical operation. The
scanner’s intended usage flow, including connectivity, scanning and exporting, must be verified. It must be
verified that the user’s slide preparation process produces slides suitable for scanning with Ocus®. Image quality
must be verified with known sample. Also, there must be a back-up solution for critical operations.
Important Notice: The scanner generates a sequence of flashing lights when capturing the overview (macro) image
of the slide. Take this into account in case you are sensitive to blinking lights.

5BEFORE YOU START
Check the carrying case for damage. If you notice any damage on the case or the scanner, contact primarily your
distributor or support@grundium.com.
Remove the transportation support pin from the bottom of the scanner by turning the pin counterclockwise.
Remember to handle the scanner carefully to avoid dropping or damaging it and avoid leaving fingerprints on the
glass surfaces or lenses while removing the pin.
Image 1 Remove the transportation support pin by turning it counterclockwise.
Place the scanner on a flat surface and make sure there is at least 10 centimetres (4 inches) of free space around it.
Tip: To ensure safe transportation, screw the transportation support pin back in before moving the scanner to
another location. Do not overtighten the pin, turning it until it stops is enough.
Note: Ocus scanner is a delicate instrument and not designed to withstand by itself stress from
shipping/transportation –careful packing is required. See full packing instructions in section 22.

7FIRST USE
When you use the scanner for the first time, you need to connect it to your computer or tablet and set up an
Internet connection for the scanner. You can use either a network cable or a WLAN/Wi-Fi for the connection.
During the setup process, assign the scanner to either an existing team or create a new team. A team can have any
number of members, but each user must have a valid Grundium account to use the scanner. To join an existing
team, ask a team member to add you.
Note: When starting up the scanner for the first time, you must have an Internet connection. After that, it is possible
to use the scanner even without an Internet connection, but the feature set will be limited (See Table 1).
Important notice: To keep the security certificates up to date, the scanner must be connected to Internet at least
once in every 2 months –this is mandatory for secure connection between the scanner and the browser.

Image 4 Label example with a serial number, SSID and a password
Note: For the first use, the scanner requires that the network has a DHCP server providing IP address. If the use of
static IP is required, this can be done after the first time use in device settings.
Note: If the network you use has a firewall, make sure that the scanner is allowed to use the outgoing connection to
the Internet (TCP ports 80 & 443 for use within same network and TCP port 471 for use from remote network). If the
firewall uses a MAC filter, you can find the MAC address of the scanner on the label at the bottom of the scanner.
Also, traffic between devices in the network must be allowed.
7.1 FIRST USE WITH A NETWORK CABLE CONNECTION
1. Attach the power cable to the scanner and plug the cable in a wall outlet. The power button shows a
breathing green light.
2. Connect one end of the network cable to the scanner and the other end to the Ethernet connector for
your network, which has connection to the Internet.
3. Press the power button. The power button flashes red. Once the scanner is switched on and connected
to the Internet, the power button shows a steady green or yellow light. If the light turns purple, the
scanner could not connect to the Internet. In case this happens, you can do the initial setup using
WLAN/Wi-Fi (see chapter 7.2).
4. Open the browser in your computer or tablet and type the following in the browser’s address field:
www.grundium.net
5. If you already have a user account to Grundium, login with your account details and move directly to
step 9.

Image 10. Team, region and devices password are required information when registering a new device.
12. Select a region from the dropdown menu.
Note: It is important to select region geographically closest to your own country, because it defines the used
server and WLAN/Wi-Fi parameters specific to your country. The password can be found on the label in
Quick guide or at the bottom of the scanner. Press Continue after all required details have been entered.
Note: Software has two (2) language options: English and Chinese.
Great job, now you are ready to use your Ocus® scanner!
7.2 FIRST USE WITH A WLAN/WI-FI CONNECTION
To use a WLAN/Wi-Fi connection, you need:
•The name of the WLAN/Wi-Fi (SSID) provided by the scanner and your password. These are found on
the label at the bottom of the scanner or on the label attached to quick start guide.
•Details of the WLAN/Wi-Fi to which the scanner connects for Internet access. These include the
WLAN/Wi-Fi name, password, and in case or Enterprise WLAN, also other information. Contact your
system administrator for assistance, if needed.
1. Attach the power cable to the scanner and plug the cable in a wall outlet. The power button shows a
breathing green light.
2. Press the power button. The power button flashes red. Once the scanner is switched on and acts as a
WLAN/Wi-Fi access point, the power button shows a steady purple light.

3. Open the WLAN/Wi-Fi settings in your computer or tablet and search for available networks.
4. Connect to Ocus WLAN/Wi-Fi. The name of the WLAN/Wi-Fi (SSID) and the password can be found on
the label at the bottom of the scanner or on the label attached to quick start guide (Image 4). If the
computer asks for a PIN code instead of a passphrase, switch to using a passphrase.
5. Open the browser in your computer or tablet and type the following in the browser’s address field:
http://www.grundium.net
Note: Make sure that the browser is using http instead of https at this phase.
6. Follow the instructions on your computer or tablet to connect the scanner to a WLAN/Wi-Fi that has
Internet access. After both the scanner and your browser are connected to the Internet, you will see the
login page (Image 5).
Tip: You can use your smart phone’s mobile hotspot feature to create a WLAN/Wi-Fi Internet connection.
7. Continue following chapter 7.1 step 5.
7.3 NETWORK SETTINGS
The scanner can be used either with cable or wireless Internet connection (either directly or via proxy) or with
direct WLAN/Wi-Fi connection between the scanner and the PC or tablet. Table 1 summarizes the features,
