Neocean IX1000 Network Storage System Installation Manual describes hardware
features, device installation, cable installation, system startup, and troubleshooting for
the Neocean IX1000 network storage system (IX1000). Before installing the
components of the IX1000, read this manual carefully so as to avoid possible
equipment damage or personal injury. This manual is organized as follows:

Chapter 1 Product Overview
1.1 Introduction
Neocean IX1000 (hereinafter referred to as IX1000) is a brand new storage product
released by Hangzhou H3C Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as H3C). As a
key component of H3C’s Neocean auto-sensing network storage framework, it is
powerful, reliable, and easy to manage, and delivers superior performance. All these
features enable it to provide users with cost-effective network storage solutions.
IX1000 is designed for:
zSmall and medium-sized enterprises. IX1000 can be used for databases,
file-related services, streaming applications, digitalized monitoring, system/file
backup/restoration, and low-cost remote backup.
zLarge organizations and branches. IX1000 can be used for system/file
backup/restoration and remote data centralization/distribution.
1.2 Product Overview
1.2.1 Appearance
An IX1000 consists of a cabinet, hot-swappable power modules, and hot-swappable
disks.

1.2.2 Power Module
The power module accepts AC input.
Rated voltage range: 100 VAC to 127 VAC or 200 VAC to 240 VAC; 50 Hz or 60 Hz
Max output power: 700 W
Note:
If you need a UPS, contact a H3C salesperson.
1.2.3 Heat Dissipation System
For IX1000, air comes in from the front of the chassis and gets out from the rear. The
fan is located between the disks and the main board. Air is blown onto the main board
to cool it, and exhausted from around the disks for heat dissipation.

1.2.4 LEDs
I. Disk LEDs
An IX1000 provides two LEDs for each disk on its front panel: a disk
power/positioning/Active LED and a disk fault/array state LED. Table 1-1 describes the
states of each LED.

II. Ethernet port LEDs
As shown in Figure 1-2, an IX1000 provides four Gigabit Ethernet ports and one fast
Ethernet port on its rear panel. Table 1-2 describes the states of the LEDs of these
ports.

zLINK: OFF means no link is present, and ON
means a link is present.
zACT: OFF means no data is being received/sent
through the port, and blinking means data is being
received/sent through the port.
III. System LEDs
An IX1000 provides three system LEDs on its rear panel: power supply LED,
positioning LED and alarm LED. Table 1-3 describes the states of these LEDs.

2.1 Safety Recommendations
To avoid possible bodily injury and device impairment, read the following safety
recommendations carefully before installing your IX1000. In actual installation, you
need to take safety measures including but not limited to the safety recommendations
listed in this section.
2.1.1 General Safety Recommendations
zTo ensure the human and equipment safety, use protective facilities (such as
ESD-preventive wrist strap).
zEnsure that you stand in the right position and that the floor is dry and flat. Ensure
good friction between you and the ground.
zKeep the chassis clean.
zKeep the chassis and installation tools away from walk areas.
zNever perform any operation that may harm you or your device.
zEnsure that you are fully aware of what you are going to do and obtain necessary
authorization before installing any part of an IX1000.
2.1.2 Safety Recommendations with Electricity
Caution:
Electricity warning labels are affixed to 1X1000. Be cautious of electricity when
performing an operation.
zCheck your work area for possible hazards, such as ungrounded power cables,
unreliably grounded power cables, and moist floors.
zLocate the emergency power-off switch in the room before installation. Turn off the
power at once in case of an accident.
zIf you need a UPS, read carefully the safety precautions specified in UPS User
Manual before installing the UPS to prevent any possible bodily injury or even
casualty.
zBe sure to unplug all the power cables and external cables before moving the
chassis.
zDo not perform any operation to the equipment with the power supply on.

zKeep the chassis away from moist areas and never allow any liquid to get into the
chassis.
2.1.3 Safety Recommendations for ESD Prevention
To prevent possible damage to your storage appliance caused by electrostatic
discharge (ESD), in addition to ESD-preventive measures for the area where the
equipment is located, always wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap when installing any
parts.
The following steps describe the correct way to use an ESD-preventive wrist strap.
1) Wear the wrist strap on your wrist.
2) Lock the wrist strap tight around your wrist to keep it in good contact with your skin.
3) Attach it to the grounding screw of the chassis by using an alligator clips.
4) Make sure that the ESD-preventive wrist strap is well grounded.
2.1.4 Recommendations in Using Disks
Pay attention to the following items in using disks:
zIf a disk is not mounted, always put it in an ESD-preventive bag, and put the bag in
a flat and clean place (better on a cushion).
zWhen holding a disk, do not touch the signal pins in the socket for fear of the chips
on the disk interface board being damaged by ESD.
zBefore manipulating a disk, make sure that the chassis is well grounded and that
you wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap. If no ESD-preventive wrist strap is
available, remember to touch the chassis often to discharge the static electricity on
your body.
zHold a disk with caution and keep the disk horizontal (better let the top cover face
upward). Avoid any collision or violent shaking to the disk. Do not place disks
stacked.
zDo not crush the top cover of the disk in operation. As disks are precise and fragile
devices, any distortion or deformation inside may result in the disk operating
improperly.
zKeep the operation environment clean. Although disks are sealed, too many dusts
in the environment may still result in some dusts entering the disk inside, causing
failures like open circuit, short circuit, and so on.
2.1.5 Safety Recommendations in Moving an IX1000
To prevent the data stored in an IX1000 form getting lost when moving the IX1000, plan
the equipment deployment properly to avoid moving your IX1000 subsequently. If you
do need to move your IX1000, take proper measures during the transportation to avoid
the accidents that may cause damage to the device, such as shaking or bumping.

2.2 Examining Installation Site
IX1000 can be used indoors only. To ensure that the device works normally and to
prolong its service life, the following requirements should be met in terms of installation
environment.
2.2.1 Temperature Requirements
To ensure the normal operation, the temperature in the equipment room should be
within specific ranges, as listed in Table 2-1.

Long-lasting high temperature will speed up the aging of the insulating materials,
greatly lowering the reliability of the device and seriously shortening its service life.
Caution:
When an IX1000 is moved from a low-temperature environment to a high-temperature
environment, condensation may occur on the device. In this case, be sure to take
measures (such as drying and airing the device) before powering on the device to
prevent hazards caused by short circuit.
2.2.2 Humidity Requirements
To ensure the normal operation, the humidity in the equipment room should be within
specific ranges, as listed in Table 2-2.

Long-lasting high humidity in the equipment room leads to poor insulation or even
electricity leakage of insulating materials. In a high-humidity environment, mechanical
performance deterioration, rust and corrosion of some metal parts are more likely to
occur.
If the relative humidity is too low, the captive screws may become loose due to a
contracted insulation washer. Meanwhile, static electricity is likely to be produced in a
dry environment, compromising the circuits of the device. Excessively high temperature
is more harmful to the device.
2.2.3 Cleanness Requirements
Dust is a hazard to the operating safety of the storage appliance. The indoor dust
accumulated on the chassis can cause electrostatic adsorption, which may result in
poor contact of connectors or metal contact points. This happens more frequently when
indoor relative humidity is low, which will not only shorten the service life of the switch,
but also cause equipment failures.
Table 2-3 lists the dust concentration limit.

Besides the dust specifications, the equipment room should also meet the rigorous
requirements on the contents of salt, acid and sulfide in the air. These harmful gases
can accelerate metal corrosion and the aging of some parts. The equipment should be
protected against harmful gases, such as SO2, H2S, NO2, NH3, and Cl2. The specific
limitation values of these harmful gases are given in Table 2-4.

2.2.4 Electromagnetic Susceptibility
Any possible interference source, from outside or inside the system, affects IX1000 in
the conduction patterns, including capacitive coupling, inductive coupling,
electromagnetic radiation, common impedance (including the grounding system)
coupling or conducting wires (power cables, signaling cables, transmission lines, and
so on). To prevent interference, you need to:
zTake effective measures to protect the power supply system against the
interference caused by the electrical power grid.
zKeep the device far away from any radio transmitter, radar transmitter, or
high-frequency large-current device.
Note:
Take electromagnetic shielding measures when necessary.
2.2.5 Grounding Requirements
A good grounding system is the basis for stable and reliable operation of the storage
appliance and is an important guarantee of lightning protection, interference resistance
and ESD prevention. Make sure you provide a good grounding system for the device.
2.2.6 Power Supply Requirements
The power supply requirements are presented in Table 2-5.

3.2 Verification Before Installation
Before the installation of an IX1000, make sure that you have read Chapter 2
“Installation Preparation” carefully and all the requirements stated are satisfied.

Note:
The directions "front", "rear", "left", "right", "bottom" referred to in this document are
defined on the assumption that the device is normally positioned and you face the front
of the device.
Warning:
zIX1000 shall be installed indoors and used as a fixed device.
zDo not remove the H3C dismantlement-preventive seal (shown in Figure 3-2) on the
chassis cover of an IX1000 without permission. If you want to open the chassis, you
should contact the local agent of H3C for permission. Otherwise, H3C shall not be
held liable for any consequence caused thereby.

3.3 Installing Device Components
3.3.1 Installation Preparation and Installation Flow
Caution:
Turn off all power supplies and remove all power cables before installing an IX1000.
Check the packing list and the device model and count the types and quantity of the
accessories supplied with the device to ensure the materials are complete.
Figure 3-3 shows the flow of installing components of an IX1000.

3.3.2 Installing a Power Module
In the 1+1 standard configuration mode, the power module of an IX1000 is installed in
the chassis before delivery; there is no need to install it on site.
3.3.3 Installing the Power Cable Buckle
To install the power cable buckle, proceed as follows:
1) Take out the power cable buckle from the package. (The appearance of the buckle
is shown in Figure 3-4.) Move it near the mounting brackets of the power module
on the rear panel of the IX1000 chassis, as shown in Figure 3-5.
2) Press the two sides of the buckle hardly with your fingers in the arrow directions
shown in Figure 3-5 to narrow the distance between the two hooks at the front end
of the buckle. Insert hook 1 into mounting bracket hole 1 of the power module.
Press the two buckle sides harder to insert hook 2 into mounting bracket hole 2 of
the power module.
3) Release your hand. The power cable buckle will restore to its original shape
because of its elasticity, so that the hooks will clench tightly to the mounting
brackets of the power module.
