1. General
This operating manual must be read and observed by everyone involved with the installation, commissioning,
operation and maintenance of the measuring system.
This operating manual applies to the following versions:
Types Equipment
73503 - 73509 Process housing with numerous closing plates for holding various measuring sensors
to monitor liquid process flows
Proper Application
The VARIOhab measuring system is used in the food and beverage industry as well as the pharmaceutical
and chemical industry for process monitoring.
The process housing can be equipped with different measuring sensors to record various process
parameters in a flow of liquid. Monitoring and evaluating occurs externally.
The measuring system may be used for the intended purpose only. Please pay attention to the specified
pressure and temperature range, the flow media and the installation situation.
Applicable and generally recognised safety rules as well as the operating manual instructions must be
followed during assembly and disassembly, in operation and during maintenance.
Foreseeable Misuse
The following are examples of misuse:
Liquid media different to that envisaged in the operating manual flow through the process housing.
Operating conditions other than those specified in the operating manual are present.
The safety information is disregarded during operation, assembly and maintenance.
Independent modifications or changes to the measuring system are carried out that restrict safety
or functionality.
The measuring system is operated in a not fully functional state.
The User's Duty to Exercise Diligence
The user must especially ensure that:
Installation of the measuring system is carried out correctly by trained technical staff.
The measuring system is operated according to its intended purpose and in a fully functional state.
The statutory requirements for operation, assembly and maintenance are observed.
Only sufficiently qualified and authorised personnel maintain the measuring system.

Danger – endangerment caused by product-specific and process-specific
conditions!
If the process housing is opened or the
measuring sensor is disassembled without
relieving the piping system pressure first, it
may result in burns, scalding or chemical
burns.
If the measuring system in a piping system is
operated with acidic or alkaline media, your
hands and fingers may suffer chemical burns
during disassembly.
If the measuring system in a piping system is
operated with hot media, the surface
temperature of the process housing can also
reach this value.
oMake sure that the piping
system pressure has been
relieved.
oMake sure that the piping
system has been rinsed
and emptied.
oMake sure that the piping
system has cooled to a value
below 50 °C before carrying
out assembly tasks.
Caution – danger zone – Malfunction due to incorrect handling!
If the measuring system is not checked or
serviced at regular intervals, it may not work
properly.
Check and maintain the
measuring system regularly.
The measuring system may not work any longer
or malfunction considerably if faulty or non-
specified parts are installed on it.
Only use parts approved by the
manufacturer.
The range of application of the measuring
system
is intended for specific operating states
(pressure, temperature, media.
Make sure of
proper application.
3. Delivery and Performance, Storage
Check the information on the delivery note for correctness and check the delivery for completeness. Later
complaints will not be accepted.
Conduct a visual inspection for transport damage. The forwarding agent must be informed of any visible
damages immediately (comment on the waybill).
Claims due to transport damage not visible right away must be made to the forwarding agent within a week.
Store the delivery in dry rooms and, if possible, in the original packaging to protect it against external
factors.

4. Function and Operation
4.1 System Description
The VARIOhab measuring system is used to monitor liquid process flows. Depending on the applied measuring
sensor, various process parameters can be recorded. Evaluation of the recorded data occurs externally.
The VARIOhab system is characterised by:
a compact multi-function unit for various,
high-quality measuring sensors
a hygienically designed product area,
optimised flow guidance and draining behaviour
sealing similar to DIN 11864
1 Measuring sensor
2 Closing plate
3 Process housing
4 Blind plate
4.2 System Operation
The process housing is available in common pipe dimensions in accordance with DIN 11850. It is welded
directly and flush into the piping system. Both vertical and horizontal installation is possible.
Installation of the measuring sensors in the VARIOhab system occurs via respective closing plates with an
adapter. Measuring sensors for pressure, temperature, conductance, flow and fill level are available.
The system is also suitable for incorporating two inspection windows and for use as an inspection glass.
4.3 System Cleaning / CIP
The measuring system is cleaned during the normal piping CIP as specified by the owner. This involves the
process housing and the product area being flushed with the various cleaning media.
Note
Only use cleaning agents which are appropriate for stainless steel and the seals
(EPDM). Please refer to the safety data sheets of the cleaning agents.
The following are to be considered as standard conditions:
• CIP media on the basis of commercially available alkali-acid components
• Cleaning additives in the concentration range of 2-4%.
• Temperatures for cleaning media 30-80°C or hot water up to 95°C
• Flow velocity 2-5 m/s.

5. Assembly and Disassembly
5.1 Safety and Assembly Instructions
Caution – danger zone warning!
Please pay attention to the following prior to installation and commissioning:
• Check the measuring system for visible external and internal damage.
• Check the process housing inside for residues.
• Check the current piping status (pressure, temperature, medium).
Please pay attention to the following if malfunctions occur and prior to
disassembly:
• Check the current piping status (pressure, temperature, medium).
Risk of injuries!
Risk of burns!
If the process housing is integrated in a piping system in which the media
can reach a temperature of more than 50°C, the surface temperature can also reach
this value.
Risk of scalding, chemical burns!
If the process housing is integrated in a piping system that has not been fully emptied
or is still pressurised, there is a risk of scalding and other personal injuries.
Caution – functional impairment or material damage!
Installation instructions:
• Measuring system for welding in must be disassembled first. The process housing
is then welded into the piping system free of tension.
• Remove welding residue from the piping system.
• The welding work (TIG, welding gas) should only be carried out by qualified
welders
(EN 287-1).
• There must be sufficient free space around the measuring system for subsequent
assembly and maintenance tasks.
