1. Overview
1.1. DEC 1000-t Digital Entertainment Centre
The DEC 1000-t product is designed for receiving, decoding and displaying Digital
Terrestrial Free-to-Air TV and Radio Broadcasts on a standard analogue TV set or
Video Recorder. The product can receive all the Free-to-Air channels without the
need for any additional specialised equipment. Simply plug in and enjoy clearer
pictures and sharper sound, the major benefits of Digital TV.

1.3. What is Digital TV?
Digital TV has recently been introduced in the UK. Digital refers to the way the
transmission of images and sound that make up a TV programme are transmitted to
your TV set. Much in the way a computer works by coding data in a stream of ones
and zeros - digital TV sends a coded signal to your TV set. This means that the
airwaves taken up by digital TV take up a lot less space. The airwaves that once
transmitted one analogue channel will now have space to transmit up to six or seven
digital channels. As a result the viewer has more choice. Widescreen TV is another
option that digital TV can provide.
Interactive TV is yet another feature of Digital TV. By using your remote you can
access all kinds of information. Digital text is much clearer than the old analogue
format. Digital systems allow you to choose your camera view of big events using the
interactive channels. With more and more features
such as these digital TV is paving the way for a much more interactive experience
when watching TV.
The Government has decided that some time between 2005 and 2010 the analogue
services will be switched off. They have however indicated that the 'switch - off' will
only happen if most viewers have decided to make the switch to digital TV
themselves.
1.4. Why is Digital TV Better?
Digital TV is better for a number of reasons.

One of the main reasons is that there will be more choice of what is available to view.
With interactive TV becoming the way of the future, consumers will have more of a
say as to what standards are set in place in regards to broadcasts.
The images and sound are clearer and widescreen TV is much easier to access
through Digital TV. As analogue TV is eventually going to be switched off, resources
into broadcasting will tend to be put into digital TV and not the older analogue type
transmissions (a method that has been used for about 60 - 70 years). As a result if
people want to know what is new, be it features of digital TV or the types of shows
that are being aired digital TV is the medium that more and more people will be
turning to. Analogue TV will have no new developments and it is unlikely that any
new resources will be pumped into this ageing broadcast format.
1.5. What Channels can I get?
These are the Free to View Digital Terrestrial channels available in the UK, at the
time of publication. They are subject to change and can be done without any prior
notice from the broadcasters and/or manufacturers.
All TV channels are in widescreeen unless otherwise indicated.

1.6. Why Switch to Digital TV?
There are many reasons as to why one should switch to Digital TV. More choice is
one of the most obvious reasons. While with Analogue TV's there are 5 channels,
there is also no monthly cost. Digital TV and the DEC mean that not only are you
presented with choice but for a small one off cost you have all these channels to
choose from, with no monthly fee to pay at the end of each month. While other cable
and satellite operators charge a subscription, the DEC functions on completely free
to view TV.
The features that comprise Digital TV are also of better quality. Digital picture and
sound quality are superior to the analogue transmissions. Not only is widescreen
more readily available with Digital TV, but the vast choice of channels means there is
also a much wider selection. Specialised shows on channels that cater to more
specific demands mean that viewers will naturally start choosing to switch over to
Digital TV.
Finally the DEC 1000-t is a very small and portable device, it can be moved from
location to location. With simple installation, digital TV and its vast range of features
are never far away.
1.7. Do I need a subscription?
No you do not need to pay a monthly subscription fee. However…
"If you use or install television receiving equipment to receive or record television
programme services you are required by law to have a valid TV Licence.
The type of licence you'll need and how to go about getting one will depend upon

3. Important Information and Safety Notes
3.1. Important Information
For your safety and proper operation of your receiver, please take time to read this
manual before installing and operating the receiver.
Before using the DEC 1000-t for the first time please check that all of the following
components are included in the package:
• 1 DEC 1000-t TV Adapter
• 1 Power supply unit and mains adapter
• 1 SCART to 9 pin cable
• 1 RF Loop-through cable
• 1 Remote control
• 2 Batteries
• 1 Quick Installation Guide
• 1 Instruction Manual
• 1 Warranty card
Carry out the following steps:
• Insert the batteries into the remote control handset
• Install the receiver as described
• Read the instructions
• If you encounter any problems, please refer to Troubleshooting
(Section 9 page 39) for any troubleshooting tips and solutions
3.2. Safety Precautions
3.2.1. Location of device
Every electronic device develops heat during usage. Although the heat from the
device is normal, sensitive furniture surfaces can become discoloured by the
constant thermal effect over the course of the time. Likewise the device feet can
cause color modifications when in contact with treated furniture surfaces. If
necessary, place the device on a suitable surface or with a heat resistant document
or cloth underneath.
3.2.2. Ventilation
The heat developing in this device is sufficiently dissipated. Nevertheless never
install the receiver in a cabinet or on a shelf with insufficient ventilation. Never cover
the cooling slots of the device. Do not place articles on the device and keep free
space of at least 40 cm over the device, so that the developing warmth is dissipated
unhindered.

3.2.3. Humidity, sun exposure, warmth
Protect the device against humidity, dripping and splash-water. Never place the
receiver in the proximity of extreme heat and do not expose to direct sun light.
3.2.4. Mains voltage
Operate the receiver only at a mains voltage of 230 V. The device may be plugged
into the mains and switched on, only after the connections with the aerial and the
television set have been made. Always unplug the receiver completely from the
mains outlet before connecting or disconnecting anything.
3.2.5. Grounding
Please ensure the parabolic aerial is grounded correctly.
3.2.6. Weather Conditions
Switch the DEC 1000-t off in the event of a thunderstorm by disconnecting the power
switch at the back of the device or by using the remote control power button. This
also applies to those devices, which are connected with the receiver.
3.2.7. Wiring
The incorrect wiring and connection of cables can lead to operational disturbances or
defects of the device.
3.3. Cleaning your receiver
Always unplug the unit from mains before cleaning the unit.
Do not use solvents of any kind to clean the unit, only use a soft damp cloth.

4. Getting Started
4.1. DEC 1000-t Connections
There are several different ways of connecting the DEC 1000-t to your TV or VCR.
You will find some examples below:
• SCART socket to TV set (optional) (Section 4.3.1 page 15)
• RF Loop-though socket
• Aerial connector
• DC Power Supply connector

4.2. Inserting the batteries into the remote control
transmitter

4.3. Connecting the DEC 1000-t to your TV set
There are two ways to connect the DEC 1000-t to your TV set: through a SCART
cable or through an RF cable. A SCART connection will give the best digital picture
quality.
If you have a TV set, which accepts RGB SCART your picture quality will be the best
possible. Most modern TVs have one or more SCART sockets. To find out if a
SCART socket is RGB, consult your TV sets’ manual.
If your TV does not have a SCART connection, you can also use the supplied RF
Loop-through cable.
4.3.1. Connecting the DEC 1000-t to your TV set via SCART
i. Locate the supplied SCART to 9 PIN cable. You will need to connect the 9
PIN connector to the socket on the DEC 1000-t unit and the SCART
connector to your TV set (as illustrated below).
Then set your TV set to accept AV input (SCART input). Please consult
your TV’s instruction manual on how to do this.
When you turn on the DEC 1000-t, you should see the Initialising screen
on your TV set.
ii. If your TV is already using the SCART from your VCR, and your VCR has
an available SCART input socket, you can connect the DEC 1000-t as
illustrated below.
Connect the 9 pin connector of the SCART cable to the DEC 1000-t and
the other end into the SCART-in connector into your VCR.
Then, set your TV to AV input (SCART input). Please consult your TV’s
instruction manual on how to do this.
Set your VCR to AV input (SCART input). Please consult your VCR’s
instruction manual on how to do this.
When you turn on the DEC 1000-t, you should see the Initialising screen
on your TV set.

iii. If your TV connects via an RF cable to your VCR, and you have an available
SCART socket on your VCR, this connection method can also be used (as
illustrated below).
Set your VCR to AV input (SCART input) (see your VCRs documentation
for instructions).
Set your TV set to the channel being used by the VCR (see your VCRs
documentation for instructions).
When you turn on the DEC 1000-t, you should see the Initialising Screen
on your TV set.
4.3.2. Connecting the DEC 1000-t to your TV set via RF cable
If you cannot use the SCART connection, you can also connect the DEC 1000-t to
our TV with the supplied RF Loop-through cable.
When using the RF-Loop cable, the DEC 1000-t sends video over Channel 38. To
change the RF output channel on the DEC 1000-t, refer to Section 7.2 page 32.
There are three ways the RF Loop cable can be connected to your TV set.
Choose one of the following:
i. Connecting the DEC 1000-t to your TV directly using RF cables
Connect one end of the supplied RF Loop-through cable to the RF
connector on the DEC 1000-t (as illustrated below). Connect the other
end of the RF-Loop cable to your TV set’s antenna connection (often
marked “RF input”).

Tune your TV set to the output channel used by the DEC 1000-t (normally
Channel 38, but this channel can be changed).
When you turn on the DEC 1000-t, you should see the Initialising screen
on your TV set.
ii. Connecting your DEC 1000-t to your TV through a VCR using RF cables
Plug one end of the supplied RF Loop-through cable into the RF
connector on the DEC 1000-t (as illustrated below). Plug the other end of
the RF cable into your VCR's RF-in socket. Another RF cable (not
supplied) will connect between your TV and VCR.
Tune your TV to the channel used by the VCR.
Tune your VCR to the output channel used by the DEC 1000-t (normally
Channel 38, but this channel can be changed).
When you turn on the DEC 1000-t, you should see the Initialisation screen
on your TV set.

iii. Connecting your DEC 1000-t to your TV through a VCR using SCART and
RF cables
Connect one end of the supplied RF Loop-through cable to the RF-out on
the DEC 1000-t (as illustrated below). Connect the other end into your
VCR's RF-in socket.
A SCART cable needs to be installed between your VCR and TV.
Then, set your TV to accept AV input (SCART input).
Tune your VCR to the output channel used by the DEC 1000-t (normally
channel 38, but this channel can be changed).
When you turn on the DEC 1000-t, you should see the Initialisation screen
on your TV set.

4.4. Connecting your TV Aerial
Note: In order to be able to receive Digital Television reception, you must first make
sure your Aerial signal strength is strong enough to receive Digital transmissions
from your local transmitter. You can either check with your local Aerial installer or you
can call the Hauppauge Aerial Support Line on 0870 010 6192 who will provide
assistance with aerial related issues. Please note that BBC licensing fees apply. If
you use or install television-receiving equipment to receive or record television
programme services you are required by law to have a valid TV Licence.
NOTE: An aerial is not supplied with the DEC 1000-t.
Plug your aerial into the back of the DEC 1000-t (as illustrated above)

4.5. Connecting the Power Supply
Please ensure you have read and fully understood the 'Important Information
and Safety Notes' located (SECTION X) at the front of this manual before
proceeding to the next step.
Do NOT switch on the mains power until AlL the connections have been made.
Plug the connector from the supplied 12V DC power supply unit into the Power
supply socket on the DEC2000-t. Plug the other end into the mains power socket,
and switch on only after you have made sure that all connections have been made.
Once all cable connections have been made, then plug the power supply into the
electricity point.

4.6. Powering UP your DEC 1000-t for the first time
When you have switched on the mains, the red light on the front of the box will light
up.
If this does not happen, press the POWER button located on the Remote control to
power up the DEC 1000-t
Please note that if you only have an RF connection to your TV - you will have to tune
your TV to the box output on a spare TV channel. (See “Connecting the DEC 1000-t to
your TV set via RF cable” – Section 4.3.2 page 16)
