Hawking HWPS12UG User manual

1
Congratulations on purchasing Hawking’s HWPS12UG 1-Port
Parallel + 2 USB Ports Wireless G Print Server. The Hawking
HWPS12UG is a powerful and convenient network printing solution
that will connect your USB and parallel printers to your network. The
HWPS12UG has a 10/100Mbps auto-sensing port, allowing you to
attach it to a 10Base-T or 100Base-TX network without the need for a
dedicated PC print server. The HWPS12UG also supports multiple
servers and multiple protocols, providing you with the capability to
print from anywhere, from any computer and from any application.

3
1. Connect the HWPS12UG Print Server to a network.
2. Connect the HWPS12UG Print Server to your printer(s).
3. Plug the AC power adapter into the power slot on the
side of the Print Server.
Check the LED’s marked as Power, LAN, and WLAN on
the front of the Print Server. They should start to flash while
doing a routine diagnostic test and printer check. If not,
please contact your local dealer for repair or replacement.
You must use the power adapter shipped along with the print
server. Do NOT use any other power adapter from other
sources.
Please note that your HWPS12UG hardware is automatically set to a
factory default IP address of 192.168.1.250

LED Indicators
The HWPS12UG is equipped with
LED lights to assist in diagnosing
print server or network errors.
Power
This light will illuminate when the HWPS12UG has sufficient power
and the power adapter is plugged into the HWPS12UG. When the
print server unit is powered on, the Power LED along with either the
LAN LED or the WLAN LED will flash as part of the unit’s Power
On Self Test (POST). This indicates that the print server hardware
is properly configured. The HWPS12UG may take up to 1 minute to
perform its internal diagnostic tests.
LAN
This light will illuminate and flash when the HWPS12UG detects
10M or 100M data transmissions over the network.
Printer Port 1, 2, or 3 (P1, U2, U3)
This set of lights will illuminate and flash when the HWPS12UG
detects a printer attached to any of the 3 printer ports. Please note
port number from the back panel of the HWPS12UG.
Wireless
The wireless light indicates that the HWPS12UG is sending and
receiving wireless information. When the wireless light is flashing,
wireless mode is enabled.
Please note that the Reset button is located on the back of the HWPS12UG. Hold this
button down for more then 5 seconds to reset the print server into factory default mode.

WINDOWS 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
1) POWER ON: After you have correctly connected your print
server to your PC and router, please power on all units.
2) Before the installation, please verify that your network
protocols are installed on your PC (TCP/IP, IPX and/or
NetBEUI). If they are not installed, please consult your
operating system’s manual for instructions on how to do so.
3) INSTALL the Administrator Installation Program: To
install your Print Server administration software, please
follow the directions listed below.
1. Insert the Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP Setup CD into
your CD-ROM.
(Windows should execute the Autorun.exe program automatically.
If not, run Autorun.exe manually from your CD-ROM drive’s root
directory.)

2. The Hawking Installation Windows manager will pop up on
your screen as follows:
3. Click on “Admin Installation” and the “Utilities Setup”
window will be displayed.

7
4. Click “Next,” and specify the destination folder where the
HWPS12UG utility files will be installed.
5. Click “Next,” and select the components you want to install.
It is highly recommended to install all provided
components.

6. Click “Next,” and specify the program folder where the
program icons will be added.
7. Click “Next” to start the utility file installation.

9
8. The “Print Server Utilities” program will finish installing.
After this installation is complete, the next step will involve
configuring your HWPS12UG. Click “Next,” and the
“Choose Print Server” dialog box will be displayed as follows.
9. Click “Next” and a dialog box will prompt you to name your
print server. Naming your print server is optional. (Please
make sure to write down the name you assign to your print
server or the pre-generated print server name for future use.)

10. Click “Next” to configure your print server’s network
communication protocol.

11
With the TCP/IP protocol, you can either (1) assign a dedicated IP
address for your print server or (2) configure it later through the
configuration utility software. (If you choose “Do not change
IP – configure later,” there is no effect on your network
settings. This is suitable for both Non-IP and IP-enabled
networks).
11. Click “Next” and the configuration summary will be
displayed in the setup window. You have completed the
“Print Server Setup” process and are ready to set up your
print server to work with your printer. Please click “Next”
and your system will add the HWPS12UG’s network port to
your PC.

12. The “Installation complete” window will be displayed to
indicate that the Administrator Installation procedure is
completed.
(Please restart your computer for your setup to complete its
installation.)
Once your computer is restarted, please open your START menu and
select the newly installed Printserver Configuration program in the
Printserver Uilities folder.

Print Server Configuration Utility
Once started, the Print Server Manager program will search your
network for any attached HWPS12UG print server. Please highlight
the desired print server and click the setup “Wizard” icon
located on the tool bar to configure your HWPS12UG. Double click
on the “Print Server Wizard” and a window will pop up requesting a
user name and password. Please use “User Name: admin and
Password: 1234”
Click on the “Print Server Wizard” again and the setup wizard
will guide you through the setup process.

Step 1: In this step, you can setup the name of the print server, the
SMB group name, and the name of each printer port. You can also
choose whether to enable/disable the wireless functionality of this
print server.
Please note: By keeping the wireless function setting on AUTO
you will need to unplug your Ethernet cable and power cable once
configuration settings are saved and your print server is rebooted.
Re-insert your power cable to boot the print server into Wireless
Mode. (Please only perform this step after the configuration process is
complete)

15
Step 2: Select to enable or disable your networking and printing
protocols. We suggest enabling all protocols for full print server
functionality.

Step 3: Set the IP address of the HWPS12UG. You may
specify a static IP address or use “Auto” to obtain an IP address from
your router’s DHCP server. (It is recommended to use auto if you are
unsure about your network IP address)
Please set the print server’s subnet mask (typically
255.255.255.0) and the intended gateway.
Please Note: Your gateway is most likely your router’s IP
address.

17
Step 4: Set up NetWare printing if desired. (You may skip setup if you
are not using Netware). Please refer to the manual for more detailed
installation information.
Step 5: Set up AppleTalk printing if desired. Please refer to the
manual for more detailed installation information.

Step 6: Select the Wireless Adapter mode to set up your wireless
LAN settings. For instructions on setting up the HWPS12UG in
Ad-Hoc mode, please refer to the manual for more detailed
installation information.
To connect to a previously configured wireless network access
point or wireless router, please select “Infrastructure Mode” and
press Next.

19
Step 7: Select to scan your network for your wireless access
point or router. (If you already know your router or access point’s
SSID, you can choose to manually input it here).
