These units MUST use one of the vent systems
described in the Installing the Fireplace section of
the Installers Guide. NO OTHER vent systems or
components MAYBE USED.
This gas fireplace and vent assembly MUST be
vented directly to the outside and MUST NEVER be
attached to a chimney serving a separate solid fuel
burning appliance. Each gas appliance MUST USE
a separate vent system. Common vent systems are
PROHIBITED.
INSPECT the external vent cap on a regular basis to
make sure that no debris is interfering with the air
flow.
The glass door assembly MUST be in place and
sealed, and the trim door assembly MUST be in
place on the fireplace before the unit can be placed
into safe operation.
DO NOT OPERATE this appliance with the glass
door removed, cracked, or broken. Replacement of
the glass door should be performed by a licensed
or qualified service person. DO NOT strike or slam
the glass door.
The glass door assembly SHALL ONLYbe
replaced as a complete unit, as supplied by the gas
fireplace manufacturer. NO SUBSTITUTE material
may be used.
DO NOT USE abrasive cleaners on the glass door
assembly. DO NOT ATTEMPT to clean the glass
door when it is hot.
Turn off the gas before servicing this appliance. It is
recommended that a qualified service technician
perform an appliance check-up at the beginning of
each heating season.
Any safety screen or guard removed for servicing
must be replaced before operating this appliance.
DO NOT place furniture or any other combustible
household objects within 36 inches of the fireplace
front.
READ and UNDERSTAND all instructions carefully
before starting the installation. FAILURE TO
FOLLOW these installation instructions may result
in a possible fire hazard and will void the warranty.
Prior to the first firing of the fireplace, READ the
Using Your Fireplace section of the Owners Guide.
DO NOT USE this appliance if any part has been
under water. Immediately CALL a qualified service
technician to inspect the unit and to replace any part
of the control system and any gas control which has
been under water.
THIS UNIT IS NOT FOR USE WITH SOLID FUEL.
Installation and repair should be PERFORMED by a
qualified service person. The appliance and venting
system should be INSPECTED before initial use
and at least annually by a professional service
person. More frequent cleaning may be required
due to excessive lint from carpeting, bedding
material, etc. It is IMPERATIVE that the unit’s
control compartment, burners, and circulating air
passageways BE KEPT CLEAN to provide for
adequate combustion and ventilation air.
Always KEEP the appliance clear and free from
combustible materials, gasoline, and other
flammable vapors and liquids.
NEVER OBSTRUCT the flow of combustion and
ventilation air. Keep the front of the appliance
CLEAR of all obstacles and materials for servicing
and proper operations.
Due to the high temperature, the appliance should
be LOCATED out of traffic areas and away from
furniture and draperies. Clothing or flammable
material SHOULD NOT BE PLACED on or near the
appliance.
Children and adults should be ALERTED to the
hazards of high surface temperature and should
STAYAWAYto avoid burns or clothing ignition.
Young children should be CAREFULLYSUPERVISED
when they are in the same room as the appliance.

The appliance installation must conform to local codes.
Before installing the appliance, consult the local building
code agency to ensure that you are in compliance with all
applicable codes, including permits and inspections.
Intheabsence oflocalcodes, thefireplaceinstallation must
conformtothe NationalFuel GasCodeANSIZ223.1(inthe
United States) or the CAN/CGA-B149 Installation Codes
(in Canada). The appliance must be electrically grounded
in accordance with local codes or, in the absence of local
codes with the National Electric Code ANSI/NFPA No. 70
(intheUnitedStates),ortothe CSAC22.1CanadianElectric
Code(in Canada).
Thesemodels may be installed ina bedroomor bed-sitting

HighAltitudeInstallations
U.L. Listed gas appliances are tested and approved with-
out requiring changes for elevations from 0 to 2,000 feet in
the U. S.A. and in Canada.
Wheninstalling this appliance at an elevation above2,000
feet, it may be necessary to decrease the input rating by
changingthe existing burnerorifice to a smaller size. Input
rate should be reduced by 4% for each 1000 feet above a
2000 foot elevation in the U.S.A. or 10% for elevations
between2000 and4500 feetin Canada. Ifthe heatingvalue
of the gas has been reduced, these rules do not apply. To
identify the proper orifice size, check with the local gas
utility.
If installing this appliance at an elevation above 4,500 feet
(in Canada), check with local authorities.

Getting Started
Introducing the Heat-N-Glo Gas Appliances
Heat-N-Glo direct vent gas appliances are designed to
operate with all combustion air siphoned from outside of
the building and all exhaust gases expelled to the outside.
The information contained in this Installers Guide, unless
noted otherwise, applies to all models and gas control
systems.Gasappliancediagrams,includingthedimensions,
are shown in this section.
Pre-install Preparation
This gas insert fireplace and its components are tested
and safe when installed in accordance with this Installers
Guide.Reporttoyourdealeranypartsdamagedinshipment,
particularly the condition of the glass. Do not install any
unit with damaged, incomplete, or substitute parts.
Theventsystemcomponentsandtrimsurroundsareshipped
in separate packages. The gas logs are packaged
separately and must be field installed.
Read all of the instructions before starting the instal-
lation. Follow these instructions carefully during the
installation to ensure maximum safety and benefit.
Failure to follow these instructions will void the own-
er’s warranty and may present a fire hazard.
TheHeat-N-GloWarrantywillbe voided by,andHeat-N-Glo
disclaims any responsibility for, the following actions:
•Installationofdamagedfireplaceorventsystemcomponent.
•Modification of the fireplace or direct vent system.
•Installation other than as instructed by Heat-N-Glo.
•Improper positioning of the gas logs or the glass door.
•Installationand/or use of any component part notmanu-
factured and approved by Heat-N-Glo, not withstanding
anyindependent testing laboratoryor otherpartyapproval
of such component part or accessory.

VENTINGAND INSTALLATION
1. Heat-N-Glogas insertsare designedfor recessedinstal-
lations into solid fuel masonry or factory built non-com-
bustiblefireplacesthat have beeninstalledin accordance

2. Minimum fireplace opening requirements are shown in

cess holes provided, an access hole of 1” di-
ameter (25mm) or less may be drilled through the
lower sides or bottom of the combustion chamber
in a proper workmanship like manner.

4. Thesolidfuelfireplace’s flue dampermustbefullylocked
inthe open positionor removed forinstallation.
5. Thechimneymust be cleanedandin goodworkingorder
andconstructed of noncombustible materials.
6. Make sure that all chimney cleanouts fit properly so air
cannot leak into the chimney.
7. Install the insert without the trim surround and make all
gas, venting, and electrical connections.
WARNING: Modification of any sheetmetal or
fiber surfaces is strictly PROHIBITED in the
installation of this appliance.
Only trim kit(s) supplied by the manufacturer shall
be used in the installation of this appliance.
8. Install decorative trim surround. The surround is tested
ANDapprovedwith thisgasinsertANDmaycover exist-
ingair circulation vents or grillson thesolid fuel fireplace
into which it is installed. Should the surround not cover
all ventilation grill surfaces, the grill should be left open.
NOTE: DECORATIVE TRIM SURROUND HAS BEEN
TESTED AND APPROVED TO COVER EXISTING AIR
CIRCULATION VENTS OR GRILLS.
WARNING: Only the surround, as supplied,
may be used to cover integral grills on the
solid fuel burning fireplace. No other components
such as shrouds, sheet metal plates, etc. may be
used to seal off vents. Remote grills or openings
outside of the surround MUST NOT be covered or
sealed.

Installing the Insert
Step 1. Installing the Vent System
Vent System Installation Precautions
Before starting installation of vent kits, the installer should
read these instructions and the Vent Kit Instructions to
ensure that a proper vent installation is completed.
Consult your local building codes before beginning the
installation.
WARNING: THIS GAS INSERT AND VENT AS-

BURNING APPLIANCE. EACH GAS APPLIANCE
MUSTUSEASEPARATE VENTSYSTEM.COMMON
VENT SYSTEMS ARE PROHIBITED.
ModelsCFX-Grand-B,CFX-IN-B,FB-INand FB-GRAND is
approvedwith vent terminationkits LINK-DV-30, LINK-DV-
30B,LINK-DV4-30 andLINK-DV4-30B.Approvedvent sys-
temterminations arelabeled for identification.3-inch diam-
eterlisted flexible aluminum and stainlesssteel gasvent is
used for both the incoming combustion air and exhaust
vent pipes. NO OTHER VENTING SYSTEMS OR COM-
PONENTS MAYBE USED. Detailed installation instruc-
tionsare includedwith each venttermination kitand should
be used in conjunction with this manual.
Horizontal Venting
The vent system on this model CANNOT be terminated
horizontally.
Vertical Venting
The vent pipes MUST be connected to the proper collars
onthe unit ANDtheexhaust ventpipe MUST beconnected
tothe terminationcap or theunit willnot operate.The com-
bustion air vent pipe CAN be connected to the termination
cap (LINK-DV30, LINK-DV30B) or it can terminate inside
the chimney (LINK-DV4-30, LINK-DV4-30B). The bottom
opening of the chimney must be sealed around the vent
pipes if the combustion air vent is NOT connected to the
termination cap. See Figures 3 and 4.
NOTE: Theminimum vertical rise (exhaustvent) is 14 feet
andthemaximumvertical riseis40feet. Thesedimensions
aremeasured from the starting collarsof the unitto theend

A vertical vent termination system installed on this model
willinclude one (1) length of3-inch flexible ventpipe forthe

NOTE: The damper of the masonry chimney may need to
beremoved to allowinstallation of theflexible-vent pipe.
This fireplace has been altered to accommodate an
insert and should be inspected by a qualified person
priorto re-use asa conventional fireplace.
NOTE: Theabovelabel,located in theinstructionpackage,
mustbe affixedto theexisting fireplaceprior toinstallation.
Forzero clearance factorybuilt woodburningfireplaces,the
use of kit LINK-ZC-ADP in place of the standard square
flashing will allow you to mount the adaptor and cap on
metal pipe. Additionally, the use of kit FLASH-DAMP will
seal off the damper opening when terminating the inlet air
vent pipe just above the damper. These 2 kits are
recommendedforzero clearance,factorybuilt woodburning
fireplaces.
Connecting the Vent Pipe
Installthe3” flexibleventpipe(s)down throughthechimney.
Secure the end of the flexible vent pipe for exhaust to the
provided3’ section ofstainless steel flexiblevent pipe.A3”
collar is factory installed on one end for mating the two
endsof flexible pipe.
WARNING: THE 3’ SECTION OF STAINLESS
STEELFLEXIBLEPIPEMUSTBEATTACHEDDI-
RECTLYTO THE EXHAUST COLLAROFTHE UNIT.
Attach either 4’ or 30’ section of intake liner to the intake
collaronthecollar slide-plate using3screws.Thisassembly
mayberemovedfrom theunittoaid installation. Slideinsert
into position, while pulling intake collar assembly towards
the front of the unit. Slide the gas insert into place, and
position any excess flexible vent pipe back up into the
chimney. This assembly will be secured in place when the
pullhandle can be lockedinto position at locking brackets.

WHEN USING THE LINK-DV4-30 VENT
SYSTEM, IT IS REQUIRED TO SEAL
AROUND THE FLEXIBLE VENT PIPES
IN THE DAMPER AREA. SEE FIGURE

Step 4. The Gas Supply Line
NOTE: Have the gas supply line installed in accordance
with local building codes by a qualified installer
approved and/or licensed as required by the locality.
(In the state of Massachusetts installation must be
performed by a licensed plumber or gas fitter).
NOTE: Before the first firing of the fireplace, the gas
supply line should be purged of any trapped air.
NOTE: Consult local building codes to properly size
the gas supply line leading to the 1/2 inch (13 mm)
hook-up at the unit.
This gas fireplace is designed to accept a 1/2 inch
(13 mm) gas supply line. To install the gas supply line:
•Alisted (andState ofMassachusetts approved)1/2 inch
(13mm) tee-handle manual shut-off valve and a listed
flexible gas connector are connected to the 1/2 inch
(13mm) inlet of the control valve.NOTE: If substituting
for these components, please consult local codes for
compliance.
•Locate the gas line access hole in the outer casing of
thefireplace.
•Open the lower grille, insert the gas supply line through
the gas line hole, and connect it to the shut-off valve.
•Whenattaching the pipe, support thecontrol sothat the
lines are not bent or torn.
•After the gas line installation is complete, use a soap
solutionto carefully check all gasconnections for leaks.
WARNING: DO NOT USE AN OPEN FLAME
TO CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS.

Wall Switch
Position the wall switch in the desired position on a wall.
Run a maximum of 25 feet (7.8 m) or less length of 18
A.W.G. minimum wire and connect it to the fireplace valve
pigtails.

Optional Accessories
Installationof the electricaljunction box is required ifusing
a blower or remote. To install:
•Uncoil the junction box cord and feed the end of the
cord through the hole on the right side of the base pan.
•Turn the junction box at a 45-degree angle and insert it
into the sidewall of the base pan.
•Turn junction box so it is flush with sidewall and screw
into place with the screw provided in the manual bag.
•Gently pull the end of the cord until cord is tight. Place
thestrain reliefon thecord andthen place it into holeon
base pan.
•Plug the cord into a convenient outlet. An electrician
may install an outlet box inside the fireplace. Place the
outletin the lower,back cornerof thefireplace supplied.
Make sure fan doesn’t touch back wall.
Fan Option (FB-IN & FB-Grand ONLY)
Onunits already installed removal ofdecorative front, sur-
round and gas insert is required.
•Detach flexible liner from back of unit.
•Removethefourscrewsonthecoverplate(seeFigure11).
•Bend up the tabs on the base pan (see Figure 10).
•Place the blower in between the bend up tabs.
•Install and wire the blower per instruction shipped with
thefan.
•The ground wire of the fan can clip on the side of the
base pan.
•Reinstall the cover plate back on the unit. Make sure
the fan does not make contact with the back wall.
