Proper installaon of any wood burning stove is necessary for the safety and eecve-
ness of its operaon. Check with your dealer regarding arrangements for installing your
free standing model. Installaon must meet strict specicaons of the Naonal Fire
Protecon Associaon and all local re and building codes.
For addional informaon on using your heater (wood stove) safely, send for Using Coal
and Wood Stoves Safely, NFPA No. 81974, from the Naonal Protecve Associaon, 470
Atlanc Avenue, Boston, MA 02210.
High Valley Stoves are tested by Arnold Green Tesng Laboratories, 2 Millbury Street,
Auburn, MA 01501.
ASH DISPOSAL: Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a ght-ng lid.
The closed container of ashes should be placed on a non-combusble oor or on
the ground, well away from all combusble materials, pending nal disposal. If the
ashes are disposed of by burial in soil or otherwise locally dispersed, they should
be retained in the closed container unl all cinders have thoroughly cooled.
LIQUID FUELS: Never use gasoline type lantern fuel, kerosene, charcoal lighter
uid, or similar liquids to start or “freshen up” a re in this stove. Keep all such
liquids well away from the stove at all mes.
CREOSOTE FORMATION & REMOVAL: When wood is burned slowly, it produces tar
and other organic vapors which combine with expelled moisture to form creosote.
The creosote vapors condense in the relavely cool chimney ue of a slow burning
re. As a result, creosote accumulates on the ue lining. When ignited, this creo-
sote makes an extremely hot re.
PRE-FABRICATED CHIMNEY: Class A masonry or all fuel prefabricated chimneys
must be listed as approved by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or you may use
“Metalvent” and “Metalbestos” for use as your chimney.
INSPECTION CODES: The installaon of the stove must comply with state and local
requirements and be inspected by the state or local building inspector, if required.
LOCATION: This stove is approved for use in mobile homes (please read mobile
home installaon secon in this manual). Do not locate a wood burning stove in a
bedroom or sleeping area. The stove should be placed centrally in relaonship to
the area to be heated. High trac areas should be avoided, and the stove should
be located in a relavely dra-free area. A 14” clearance to any furnishings must
be maintained.
Inspect chimney connector and chimney twice monthly, and clean if necessary.
Keep stove away from combusbles. Follow suggested distances.
Install smoke pipe segments with crimped end down, This permits creosote to drip
back into the stove and be burned away.
The use of aluminum type “B” gas vent is unsafe and prohibited by the Naonal
Fire Prevenon Associaon Code.
The area through which the chimney pipe will travel should be inspected. If the
installaon requires cung a hole in the ceiling, check the ac for wires, ducts,
etc, that may interfere.
It is vitally important that single wall pipe is never closer than three mes the di-
ameter of the pipe from a combusble surface. Never use single wall pipe through
a combusble surface.

800.421.0771
Use only an insulated, all fuel chimney to vent the hot gases out of the house. It
will reduce the amount of creosote buildup and improve the dra needed to vent
hot gases from the stove.
Use a 6” diameter insulated thimble, or a 6” diameter insulated all-fuel chimney
secon when passing through a combusble wall or ceiling.
Do not use more than one elbow in the stove pipe.
Any horizontal pipe should be pitched upward toward the chimney at least 1/4” for
each horizontal foot.
Ensure that the venlang pipe does not extend so far into chimney ue that it
blocks air ow.
Parcular aenon should be paid to the point where the ue passes through a
wall or ceiling. This penetraon should always be made with insulated pipe and the
proper accessories.
The longer the pipe and the greater amount of elbows, the greater the chance of
dangerous creosote and ash buildup. Modern stoves are engineered to achieve
maximum heat dispersal without lengthy vents eliminang a potenally hazardous
situaon.
Use heavy gauge stove pipe: at least 18 gauge with 6” diameter.
Each stove pipe connecon should be joined and secured with sheet metal screws
to avoid possible separaon during use.
The top of the ue must be at least 3’ higher than the roof at the point of exit. In
pitched roofs, the top of the stovepipe must be at least two feet to the highest
point of the roof and at least ten feet away.
Do not operate the stove in such an extreme manner that any poron of
the stove becomes “red hot”.
If this wood stove is not properly installed, a house re may result.
For your safety, follow all installaon direcves, cauons, and safety noces. Contact
local building ocials about restricons and installaon inspecon in your area.

Start 3/8” bolts and washer (provided) into taped holes on boom of unit.
Using 8” blocks, shim front of stove and aach front legs. Tighten bolts securely.
Shim rear of unit and aach two rear legs, being sure to ghten bolts securely.
Once all four legs are aached, remove shims. Be careful not to lt the stove on
two legs or breakage may occur.
If the unit is installed in a mobile home, see mobile home installaon instrucons.
Minimum clearance to combusbles must be maintained as shown in gure 1.
Combusble wall and ceiling materials includes wood, cloth, vinyl, paper, etc.
Wood covered with plasc is also considered combusble. The 10” clearance for
the stove also applies for plain stovepipe used in construcng the chimney pipe.
Clearance is applicable to the parallel wall or the ceiling either when the wall is un-
protected or when 3/8” asbestos millboard is axed to the wall without spacing.
Select a spot for the stove. Inspect the area that the stovepipe will be running
through to connect with the exisng chimney. Use an insulated connector if a
combusble wall is between the chimney and stove.
If the area the pipe runs through looks acceptable, move the stove into posion.
Be sure the stove has proper clearance from combusble areas.
If a new chimney is being installed, follow the instrucons of the chimney pipe
manufacturer or have it I stalled by a cered chimney installer.
Install the chimney connector. If it is passing through combusble walls, it must
be insulated, such as triplewall pipe. Also, if it is possible to maintain 10” between
your smoke pipe and a combusble wall, use an insulated chimney pipe. Consult
your local building code and regulaons.
Aer the pipe connector is in place, run the stovepipe with the crimped edge
down from the chimney connector to the stove. The crimped edges must be down
so creosote accumulang on the walls of the stovepipe can run back into the stove
and not out the joints of the pipe.
Check the installaon to determine the pipe is connected properly using three
sheet metal screws per joint; that the proper distances have been maintained from
combusble surfaces with the stove and the stovepipe; and the chimney is in good
repair and is installed properly.

Before mounng legs onto unit, remove the four leveling bolts on boom of legs.
Mount four legs onto unit.
Posion the stove onto the oor protector in its nal locaon, making sure all mini-
mum clearances are met. Mark the locaon of the four legs on the oor. Remove
the stove and drill a 5/16” hole through the oor of the home in the four locaons.
Reposion the stove and insert a 5/16” bolt (not supplied) through the hole in the
boom of each leg and fasten to the oor.
The stove should be grounded to the chassis with a #8 AGW copper wire or equiva-
lent.
Place the outside air kit on the rear of the unit with the elbow turned toward the
boom of the unit and fasten with 2 tec screws supplied. Connect a 4” ex pipe
(not supplied) to the outside air kit, place a,screen on the other end and insert
through the wall of the home.
On the front of the stove located under the hearth, noce a 5” X I 5/8” opening.
Place the 6” X 2” plate (provided with the outside kit) over this opening and aach.
The 1600 is shipped with both the rebrick and reblanket already installed. In the event
the rebrick or reblanket need to be reinstalled you should follow the diagram below.
Aer installing the rebrick in the upper shelf then insert the reblanket above that.
Bricks #1 - 16: 1” thick x 4 1/2” x 9”
Bricks #17 & 18: 1” thick x 2 1/2” x 9”

Remove blower from box.
Place blower on rear of unit in rectangle opening. Align slots on either side of unit
with holes on rear of unit.
Bolt blower onto unit with 2 3/8” bolts provided.
Place rheostat box which is connected to blower with two jumper wires toward top
of unit at your convenience and aach to unit with 2 tec screws provided.
Wiring: The blower assembly is shipped pre-wired, so no wiring is necessary. How-
ever, if the wires become disconnected for any reason, simply connect the male
and female connectors on the rheostat to the male and female connectors on the
blower.
Glass can be installed in the door with the door mounted on the stove.
Remove bracket bolts from the door and remove all pieces of broken glass if any.
Remove backing from the gasket. Center gasket on edge of replacement glass.
Firmly press gasket onto glass edge of all sides. Cut excess gasket.
Place glass in opening.
Posion brackets in place, insert bolts and ghten carefully using a 1/8” allen
wrench.
Glass should be snug but not excessively ght.
Although glass has excellent heat resistance and strength characteriscs, it can crack
through improper use. To achieve maximum ulity and safety of glass in a wood burning
stove, we advise the following:
Inspect the glass regularly. If you detect a crack or break, exnguish the re im-
mediately and replace the glass.
Do not slam the door or otherwise impact the glass. When closing the door, logs or
other objects should not protrude or impact the glass.
Do not clean the glass with materials which may scratch or damage the glass.
Scratches on the glass can develop into cracks or breaks. Oven cleaner may be
used, but do not get any on the paint as it will remove paint.
Never put substances which can ignite explosively in the stove since even small
explosions in conned areas can blow out the glass.
Pull the damper slide all the way open.
Roll up pieces of newspaper and place in the rebox.
Place kindling on top of paper and light paper. Aer re is burning, place larger
pieces of wood on the re.

800.421.0771
This stove is designed to burn dry, seasoned hardwood.
Avoid coming in contact with the rebrick or air tubes when loading wood into the
unit.
Once the re is burning, you can control the re by using the control on the right
hand side of the unit. Pull to open and push to close.
Due to the nature of a non-catalyc stove, there may be smoke spillage into the
room from the combuson air chamber when starng the stove. Aer the stove
has been burning for a me, this will cease.
When opening the door make sure the dra control is fully open
to avoid smoke spillage into the room.
