Radio andTelevision Interference
This Smart Controller has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a class B
digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to
provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation.
The Smart Controller generates and radiates radio frequency energy and if not installed
and used in accordance with instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio
communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a
particular installation. If the Smart Controller does cause harmful interference to radio
or television reception, which can be determined by pressing any button on the Smart
Controller, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of
the following measures:
• Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
• Increase the separation between the Smart Controller and the receiver.
• Consult the dealer that installed the Smart Controller for help.
In order to maintain compliance with FCC regulations, the Smart Controller must not
be modified in any way and only approved batteries must be used. The user is cautioned
that changes and modifications made to this Smart Controller could void the user's
authority to operate this equipment.

When the “Low Bat” symbol appears on the Smart
Controller display you should replace the batteries.

the main body of the Smart Controller up. The battery
cover / mounting bracket will remain attached to the

old batteries. Please discard the batteries properly.
NEVER discard the old batteries into a fire. Replace
the batteries with two new AA batteries of the same
type and manufacturer. Home Comfort Zones
recommends using alkaline batteries.
Please ensure that the batteries are correctly
inserted into the Smart Controller. Match the
polarity of the battery with the label inside the

Placement of your Smart Controller
The key to your comfort is the proper placement of the Smart Controller. The Smart
Controller is more than a thermostat, it is your local interface to your Home Comfort
Zones climate control system. The Smart Controller contains a very accurate
temperature sensor. In order for the Smart Controller to function properly you will
need to consider several factors.
DO NOT place the Smart Controller:
• Behind doors, in corners or other dead air spaces.
• In direct sunlight or near lamps, appliances or other sources of radiant heat.
• On an outside wall or wall exposed to an unconditioned space (i.e. garage, etc.).
• In the flow path of a supply register, in stairways or near outside doors.
• On a wall where concealed pipes and/or ductwork will affect the thermostat.
• Near sources of electrical interference such as arcing relay contacts.
Your installer will work with you to determine the proper location in each room.
Although the Smart Controller can be placed anywhere, we recommend that you
mount it to the wall to ensure it stays in the room it is controlling and does not get lost.
(If the Smart Controller is removed from the room it is assigned to, your system will
not function properly.)

6
UsingYour Smart Controller
The Smart Controller is just one part of your new Home Comfort Zones climate con-
trol system. In order for the Smart Controller to function properly, your entire system
should be installed and set up by a professional Home Comfort Zones’ dealer. Before
your installer leaves your home she should have shown you how to set the temperature
for your entire home from the main display.
The main purpose for the Smart Controller is to:
• Turn on and “off” the conditioning to a particular room
• Temporarily adjust the temperature in a particular room
Turning On and “Off” Conditioning
Your Home Comfort Zones system is designed to save energy while providing you with
the utmost comfort. Most thermostats have a “vacation” mode or some setting that
allows you to save energy while you are away for an extended period. With the Home
Comfort Zones climate control system you can now extend that concept to individual
rooms that are currently not being used.
Your installer will program the main sys-
tem for your AWAY settings. The AWAY
settings are economy settings to be used
when you will be away from the home for
an extended period of time. Typically
home owners will reduce the heating set-
ting to 60° and increase the air conditioning
setting to 90°. Your dealer will
recommend settings for your particular climate. By default, when you place a room in
“Saver” mode, by pressing the On/Saver button, the system will use the “away” settings
for that room. The system will also periodically turn circulation on to avoid stale air.
You can also program individual “saver” settings for each room or groups of rooms.
Please consult your Main Display System manual for information concerning individual
room settings.
If a room is in SAVER mode and you press the On/Saver button, the room will be
conditioned to the settings currently programed at the main display for that room .

Temporarily Adjusting theTemperature
You can easily adjust individual room temperatures by pressing the UP or DOWN but-
tons on the Smart Controller. The Smart Controller will immediately go into SET
mode, indicating that it is in the process of
changing the temperature in the room. The
Smart Controller will alternately display the
SET temperature and the current room tem-
perature. The SET mode is completed when
the current temperature equals the SET tem-
perature. This temporary setting will last for a
period of time determined by the main system
setting. The factory default is set at four
hours. If you are constantly adjusting a room’s temperature, you might consider per-
manently changing the programmed setting for that particular room. (We assume that
one occupant will set the temperature of the whole house to meet her needs and the
other occupant will go from room to room adjusting the temperature to meet his
needs.)
When Should ITurn a Room “Off”?
Any time you are not using a room everyday, it would be a good idea to place that room
in “Saver” mode. Guest / spare bedrooms, media or bonus rooms and home offices are
all good candidates for energy savings. You simply set the Smart Controller to the
“saver” position when these rooms are unoccupied. When you want to use the room
simply turn the room “On” by pressing the “On / Saver” button on the Smart Control-
ler. Within a matter of minutes you will feel the conditioning as the system brings the
room to the programmed set temperature.
The “On/Saver” button is ideal for bedrooms that will not be occupied during the day.
As the children leave their rooms for school or as you leave your room for the office,
you can now turn off your lights AND turn “off” the conditioning for your room.
