■Ithas been reportedthat vibrations fromhand-held tools
may contribute to a condition called Raynaud’s Syn-
drome in certain individuals. Symptoms may include
tingling, numbness and blanching of the fingers, usually
apparentuponexposuretocold.Hereditaryfactors,
exposure to cold and dampness, diet, smoking and work
practices are all thought to contribute to the development
of these symptoms. It is presently unknown what, if any,
vibrations or extent of exposure may contribute to the
condition. There are measures that can be taken by the
operator to possibly reduce the effects of vibration:
a) Keepyourbodywarmin coldweather.Whenoperat-
ing the unit wear gloves to keep the hands and wrists
warm. It is reported that cold weather is a major
factorcontributingtoRaynaud’sSyndrome.

b) After each period of operation, exercise to increase
bloodcirculation.
c) Take frequent work breaks. Limit the amount of
exposureperday.
d) Keep thetoolwellmaintained, fasteners tightened
andwornpartsreplaced.
If you experience any of the symptoms of this condition,
immediately discontinue use and see your physician
about these symptoms.

■Mix and store fuel in a container approved for gasoline.

■Mix fuel outdoors where there are no sparks or flames.
Wipe up any fuel spillage. Move 30 ft. (9 m) away from

sure the unit has been properly assembled.
FRONT HANDLE
See Figure 2.
1. Remove the front handle, bolt, and wing nut from the
Owner’s Kit.
2. Install the front handle onto the top side of the drive
shaft housing and move it to a comfortable position.
3. Place the bolt through the front handle as shown, then
install the wing nut.
4. Tightenwing nut securely.
GRASS DEFLECTOR WITHOUT EDGER
GUIDE - TRIMLITE AND TRIM ‘N EDGE
See Figure 3.
1. Remove wing nut, flat washer, lock washer, and bolt
from the Owner’s Kit.
2. Place grass deflector over shaft and bracket.
3. Install bolt through the slots in the tabs on grass deflec-
tor and bracket on shaft housing.
4. Install flat washer, lock washer and wing nut.
5. TightenSecurely.

EDGER GUIDE ASSEMBLY
See Figure 4.
1. Assemble the two plastic pieces of the edger guide
together using the short bolt, flat washer, lock washer
andwingnut.
2. Slide the edger guide to adjust it to the desired trimming
length.
3. Tighten the wing nut securely.

1. Remove the wing nut, flat washer, lock washer, and bolt
from the Owner’s Kit.
2. Place the grass deflector over the shaft and bracket.
3. Slide the assembled edger guide over the tabs on the
grass deflector and bracket.
4. Place the bolt through the slots in the tabs on the grass
deflectorandtrimmer.
NOTE: Ensure the slots are aligned before installing the
bolt.
5. Install the flat washer, lock washer and wing nut.
6. Tighten the wing nut securely.
GRASS DEFLECTOR - EASY REACH
See Figure 7.
1. Remove the wing nut from the Owner's Kit.
2. Place slot in grass deflector over the square tab of the
mountingbracket.
3. Rotatethe deflector around the driveshaft housing then
insert the screw on the grass deflector into the screw
hole in the mounting bracket. The mounting surface of
the grass deflector should fit flush on the mounting
bracket.
4. Install the wing nut and tighten securely.

FUELING AND REFUELING THE TRIMMER
FUEL MIXTURE
This product is powered by a 2-cycle engine and requires
pre-mixinggasoline and 2-cycle oil. Pre-mixunleaded
gasoline and 2-cycle engine oil in a clean 1 gallon container
approvedforgasoline.
Recommended fuel: This engine is certified to operate on
unleadedgasolineintended for automotive use.
Mix Homelite Premium Exact Mix oil with gasoline accord-
ing to the instructions on the package. If Premium Exact
Mix oil is not available, use a high quality 2-cycle engine
oil, mixed at 2.6 oz. per gallon (US).
Do not use automotive oil or 2-cycle outboard oil.
NOTE: Premium Exact Mix fuelmixwill stay fresh up to30
days.
DONOTmixquantitieslargerthanusableina30dayperiod.
FUEL MIXTURE
WARNING:
Always shut off engine before fueling. Never add fuel
to a machine with a running or hot engine. Move at
least 30 ft. (9 m) from refueling site before starting
engine. Do not smoke!
OPERATING THE TRIMMER
See Figure 8.
Holdthe trimmer withthe right handon the rearhandle and
the left hand on the front handle.Keep a firm grip with both
handswhile in operation.Trimmer shouldbe held at a
comfortablepositionwith therear handle abouthip height.
Always operate trimmer at full throttle. Cut tall grass from
thetop down.This willpreventgrassfrom wrappingaround
the shaft housing and string head which may cause dam-
agefromoverheating. If grass becomeswrappedaround
the string head, STOPTHE ENGINE, disconnect the spark
plugwire, and removethe grass. Prolongedcuttingat
partial throttle will result in oil dripping from the muffler.
FILLING TANK
1. Cleansurfacearoundfuelcaptopreventcontamination.
2. Loosen fuel cap slowly. Rest the cap on a clean surface.
3. Carefully pour fuel into the tank. Avoid spillage.
4. Prior to replacing the fuel cap, clean and inspect the
gasket.
5. Immediately replace fuel cap and hand tighten. Wipe up
any fuel spillage.
NOTE: It is normal for smoke to be emitted from a new
engine after first use.

ADVANCING THE STRING
ADVANCING STRING USING THE EZ LINE™ TAP
ADVANCE SYSTEM
String advance is controlled by tapping string head on grass
whilerunning engine atfullthrottle.
1. Run engine at full throttle.
2. Tap string head on ground to advance string. String
advances each time the head is tapped.
3. Several taps may be required until string strikes the cut
off blade.
4. Resumetrimming.
NOTE: If the string is worn too short you may not be able to
advance the string by tapping it on the ground.If so, STOP
THEENGINE, and manually advance thestring.
ADVANCING THE STRING MANUALLY
Pushthe spoolretainer down whilepulling on string(s) to
manuallyadvance thestring.
CUT OFF BLADE
This trimmer is equipped with a cut-off blade on the grass
deflector. For best cutting, advance string until it is trimmed
to length by the cut-off blade. Advance string whenever you
hearthe engine running fasterthan normal.Thiswill main-
tainbest performance andkeep string longenoughto
advanceproperly.
CUTTING TIPS
See Figure 9.
■Keep the trimmer tilted toward the area being cut; this is
the best cutting area.
■Do not cut in dangerous cutting area.
■Use the tip of string to do the cutting; do not force string
head into uncut grass.
■Wire and picket fences cause extra string wear, even
breakage. Stone and brick walls, curbs, and wood may
wearstringrapidly.
■Avoid trees and shrubs. Tree bark, wood moldings,
siding, and fence posts can easily be damaged by the
string.

■Loosen the wing nut and slide the edger guide to adjust it
to the desired trimming length then retighten the wing nut
securely. Refer to “Edger Guide Assembly” earlier in this
manualforadditionalinformation.
■The edger guide allows the trimmer to be used as an
edgerfor cutting alongsidewalks,driveways, flower
beds, etc. The edger guide is convenient to use and
supports the trimmer as it is being used as an edger.
■Be extremely careful when tilting the trimmer to use as
an edger. The muffler, and the exhaust from the muffler
get very hot during operation. Keep the muffler away
from all body parts. See Figure 11.

TO START A COLD ENGINE:
1. Lay the trimmer on a flat, bare surface.
2. Push the primer bulb 8 to 10 times.
3. Set the choke lever to the choke position .
4. Squeeze the throttle trigger to the full throttle position.
5. Pull the starter until the engine tries to run. No more
than 6 pulls.
6. Set the choke lever to the half choke position .
7. Hold the trigger and the pull starter rope until the engine
runs.
8. Run the engine 30 to 45 seconds at full throttle (with the
trigger depressed fully) on half choke position to
warm up the engine. Move the choke lever to the run
position .
TO START A WARM ENGINE:
1. Move the choke lever to the run position .
2. Hold the trigger and pull the starter rope until the engine
runs.
TO STOP THE ENGINE:
To stop the engine, push and hold the STOP button until the
enginestops.

SPOOL REPLACEMENT
EZ LINE™ TAP ADVANCE SYSTEM

If replacing string only, refer to“String Replacement”later in
this manual.
Useonly .080 in.(2.0 mm) diametermonofilamentstring.
Useoriginal manufacturer's replacement stringforbest
performance.
1. Stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire. Hold
thestringheadand unscrew the spoolretainer.Turn
counterclockwise.
2. Remove the empty spool from the string head. Keep the
spring attached to the spool.
3. To install the new spool, make sure the two strings are
captured in the slots opposite each other on the new
spool. Make sure the ends of each string is extended
approximately 6 in. (152 mm) beyond each slot.
4. Thread the strings into the eyelets in the string head.
Carefully push the spool into the string head (gently pull
the strings to the outside if necessary). When the spool
is positioned in the string head, grasp the strings and
pull sharply to release them from the slots in the spool.
5. Push down and turn the spool counterclockwise until it
no longer turns. Hold the spool down and rotate clock-
wise a small amount. Release the spool. The spool
should be locked down in the string head. If not, hold
downand rotate untillocked.
6. Make sure the string head and the spool retainer are
installed on the drive shaft by turning the retainer
clockwise to tighten.
7. Pull the strings again to rotate the spool into cutting
position.Push the spoolretainerdown while pullingon
string(s) to manually advance the string and to check for
proper assembly of the string head.

Useonly originalmanufacturer'sreplacementparts,
accessories and attachments. Failure to do so may
cause poor performance, possible injury and may
voidyourwarranty.

STRING REPLACEMENT
See Figures 16, 17, 18 and 19.
1. Stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire. Hold
thestringheadand unscrew the spoolretainer.Turn
counterclockwise.
2. Remove the spool from the string head. NOTE: Keep
the spring attached to the spool. Remove any old string
remainingonthespool.
3. Cut two pieces of string, each being approximately 9 ft.
(2.7 m) long. Use only .080 in. (2.0 mm) diameter
monofilamentstring.
4. Insert the first string into the anchor hole in the upper
part of the spool. Wind the first string around the upper
part of the spool counterclockwise, as shown by the
arrows on the spool. Place string in the slot on upper
spool flange, leaving about 6 in. (152 mm) extended
beyond the slot. Do not overfill. After winding the string,
there should be at least 1/4 in. (6 mm) between the
wound string and the outside edge of the spool.
5. Repeat above step with second string, using the bottom
part of spool. Do not overfill.
6. Replace the spool and the spool retainer. Refer to "Spool
Replacement " earlier in this manual.
CLEANING THE EXHAUST PORT AND
MUFFLER
NOTE: Depending on the type of fuel used, the type and
amount of oil used, and/or your operating conditions, the
exhaust port and muffler may become blocked with carbon
deposits. If you notice a power loss with your gas powered
tool, you may need to remove these deposits to restore
performance.Wehighlyrecommended that only qualified
service technicians perform this service.
SPARK ARRESTOR
The spark arrestor must be cleaned or replaced every 25
hoursor yearly toensureproper performance ofyour
product. Spark arrestors may be in different locations
dependingon the model purchased.Pleasecontact your
nearest service dealer for the location of the spark arrestor
foryourmodel.

■Remove the spark arrestor from the muffler.

■If your spark arrestor is made of a fiberglass material,
discardandreplace.

■If your spark arrestor is made of a metal material follow
these cleaning instructions:
1. Spray the spark arrestor with a quality carbon
cleaner.
2. Gently clean using a wire brush.
3. Installthe new orcleaned spark arrestorand reas-
semblecompletely before use.

The fuel cap contains a non-serviceable filter and a check
valve. A clogged fuel filter will cause poor engine perfor-
mance. If performance improves when the fuel cap is
loosened, check valve may be faulty or filter clogged.
Replacefuel cap ifrequired.
SPARK PLUG
This engine uses a NSK # BPMR7A spark plug with
.025 in. (0.63 mm) electrode gap. Usean exactreplace-
ment and replace annually, or more frequently if necessary.
STORING THE TRIMMER (1 MONTH OR
LONGER)
1. Drain all fuel from tank into a container approved for
gasoline. Run engine until it stops.
2. Clean all foreign material from the trimmer. Store it in a
well-ventilated place that is inaccessible to children.
Keep away from corrosive agents such as garden
chemicals and de-icing salts.
3. Abide by all Federal and local regulations for the safe
storage and handling of gasoline. Excess fuel should be
usedupinother2-cycleenginepoweredequipment.
REPLACING AND CLEANING AIR FILTER
SeeFigures 20and 21.
Forproper performance andlong life, keepair filter clean.
1. Remove the air filter cover by pushing down on the latch
with your thumb while gently pulling on the cover.
2. Remove the filter, clean it in warm soapy water. Rinse
and let dry completely. For best performance, replace
annually.
3. Install the filter, align tabs, push in, and make sure the
latch snaps and latches into place.

PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTION
1. To check for spark: Disconnect the spark plug
wire. Reattach the spark plug wire and lay spark
plug on metal cylinder. Pull the starter rope and
watch for spark at spark plug tip. If there is no
spark, repeat test with a new spark plug.
2. Push primer bulb until bulb is full of fuel. If
bulb does not fill, primary fuel delivery system
is blocked. Contact a service dealer. If primer
bulb fills, engine may be flooded (see next
item).
3. Remove spark plug, turn trimmer so spark plug
hole is aimed at the ground. Move choke lever
to “RUN” and pull starter cord 10 to 15 times.
This will clear excess fuel from engine. Clean
and reinstall spark plug. Pull starter three
times with choke lever at “RUN”. If engine
does not start, move choke lever to “CHOKE”
andrepeatnormalstartingprocedure.Ifengine
still fails to start, repeat procedure with a new
sparkplug.

NIA EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS NONROAD AND SMALL OFF-ROAD ENGINES
TheU.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgency (EPA),the CaliforniaAir Resources Board(CARB), and Homelite Consumer Products,Inc.are
pleasedto explain the Emission ControlSystem Warranty onyour nonroad or small off-roadengine. In California,new small off-roadengines
mustbe designed,built and equipped to meetthe state's stringent anti-smog standards.In other states, new 2000and latermodel year
nonroadengines must be designed, builtand equipped, atthe time of sale,to meet theU.S.EPA regulations for small nonroadengines.The
nonroad engine must be free from defects in materials and workmanship which cause it to fail to conform with U.S.EPA standards for the first
two years of engine use from the date of sale to the ultimate purchaser.Homelite Consumer Products, Inc.must warrant the emission control
system on your nonroad or small off-road engine for the period of time listed above provided there has been no abuse, neglect, or improper
maintenanceof your nonroad or smalloff-road engine.
Your emission control system may include parts such as the carburetor or fuel injection system, the ignition system, the catalytic converter.
Alsoincluded maybe hoses, belts, and connectors and otheremission relatedassemblies.
Wherea warrantablecondition exists, Homelite Consumer Products, Inc. willrepair yournonroad or small off-road engine at nocost to you,
includingdiagnosis (ifthe diagnostic workis performedat an authorized dealer), parts,and labor.
MANUFACTURER'SWARRANTY COVERAGE:
The 1995 and later small off road engines are warranted for two years in California. In other states, 1997 and later model year nonroad
engines are also warranted for two years. If any emission-related part on your engine is defective, the part will be repaired or replaced by
HomeliteConsumer Products,Inc. free of charge.
OWNER'SWARRANTYRESPONSIBILITIES
(a) As the nonroad or small off-road engine owner, you are responsible for the performance of required maintenance listed in your owner's
manual. HomeliteConsumer Products,Inc. recommends that you retain allreceipts covering maintenance on yournonroad orsmall off-
road engine, but Homelite Consumer Products, Inc., cannot deny warranty solely for the lack of receipts or for your failure to ensure the
performanceof allscheduled maintenance. Anyreplacement partor service thatis equivalentin performance anddurability maybe used
innon-warrantymaintenanceor repairs,andshall not reduce the warrantyobligations of the engine manufacturer.
(b) As the nonroad or small off-road engine owner, you should be aware, however, that Homelite Consumer Products, Inc., may deny you
warranty coverage if your nonroad or small off-road engine or a part has failed due to abuse, neglect, improper maintenance or unap-
provedmodifications.
(c) You are responsible for presenting your nonroad or small off-road engine to a Homelite Consumer Products, Inc., service dealer as soon
as a problem exists.The warranty repairs should be completed in a reasonable amount of time, not to exceed 30 days.

COVERAGE:
Homelite Consumer Products, Inc. warrants to the ultimate purchaser and each subsequent purchaser that your nonroad or small off-road
enginewill be designed,builtand equipped, atthe time ofsale,to meet allapplicable regulations. HomeliteConsumerProducts, Inc. also
warrants to the initial purchaser and each subsequent purchaser that your nonroad or small off-road engine is free from defects in materials
andworkmanship which cause theengine tofail to conformwith applicableregulationsfor a period of two years.The 1995 and later small off
road engines are warranted for two years in California. In all other states for 1997 and later model years, EPA requires manufacturers to
warrant non-road engines for two years.These warranty periods will begin on the date the nonroad or small off-road engine is purchased by
the initial purchaser.If any emission-related part on your engine is defective, the part will be replaced by Homelite Consumer Products,Inc.at
no cost to the owner.
HomeliteConsumer Products,Inc. shall remedy warranty defectsat any authorized Homelite ConsumerProducts, Inc. engine dealer or
warranty station. Any authorized work done at an authorized dealer or warranty station shall be free of charge to the owner if such work
determines that a warranted part is defective. Any manufacturer-approved or equivalent replacement part may be used for any warranty
maintenance or repairs on emission-related parts, and must be provided free of charge to the owner if the part is still under warranty.
HomeliteConsumer Products,Inc. is liable for damagesto other engine components causedby thefailure of a warranted partstill under
warranty.
TheCalifornia Air Resources Board's EmissionWarranty Parts List specifically defines the emission-relatedwarrantedparts.(EPA's
regulationsdo notinclude a parts list, butEPA considers emission-related warrantedparts to includeall theparts listed below.)
Thesewarrantedparts are: Carburetor,Spark Plug, Ignition, AirFilter and Fuel Filter.
MAINTENANCEREQUIREMENTS
The owner is responsible for the performance of the required maintenanceas defined by Homelite Consumer Products, Inc.in the operator's
manual.
LIMITATIONS
TheEmission ControlSystems Warranty shall not cover any ofthe following:
(a) repair of replacement required because of misuse or neglect, lack of required maintenance, repairs improperly performed or replace-
mentsnot conformingto Homelite Consumer Products, Inc.specifications that adverselyaffectperformance and/or durability,and
alterationsor modificationsnot recommended orapproved inwriting by Homelite Consumer Products,Inc., and
(b) replacement of parts and other services and adjustments necessary for required maintenance at and after the first scheduled replace-
mentpoint.
TheEmissions Compliance Period referred to onthe Emissions Compliancelabel indicatesthe number of operatinghoursforwhichthe
enginehas been shown to meetFederal emission requirements. Category C=50 hours,B=125 hours, andA=300 hours.
