Introduction
Introduction
The MTU992119922 magnetictape units, designedfor use with DPS 6 PLUS
systems, arebuffered, 9-track, dual-density magnetic tape units that offer
6250-bpi Group CodedRecording(GCR) and 1600-bpi Phase-Encoded (PE) opera-
tion. Eachtape unit has three operatingperformance modes: 25-ips start/stop,
25-ips streamingmode,
and 75-ips streamingmode. Dependingon data flow
between
the tape subsystem and the host system, the unit automatically selects
the mode which provides the maximumthroughput.
Each
tape unit is located in a separatecabinet. Each tape unit issuitablefor
mountingon tabletop, system, or
an optional tape stand (availablefrom
Honeywell). Upto four drives per MTC9901 Tape Controller may be used
with a
system. Thefirst
tape unit must be the MTU9921 primary unit; up to three
MTU9922 secondary units maybe added asrequired.

Each tape unit contains a 128K-byte electronic data buffer, capable ofstoring
commands
and data records. Buffered data istransferredbetween the host .c ,
system and the tape unit at the channel data rate whichisfaster than the typical
tape writing rate. As a result, the tape unit can continue read orwrite operatioI,l~
despite short interruptions in data flow with the hostsystem. Many applications
will operate
at a much greater throughput rate than with a 75-ips, non-buffered
tape unit.
Unlike many other tape units, the tape units containno tape capstan with motor
drive, tensionarms,
or vacuumcolumns. The tape isdrivenby reel motors that
are electronically servo-controlledto regulate tape speed and tape tension. The
tape isguidedover the read/write head by air bearings that sense tape motion
and tensionto help control supply and take-up reel motors.

catorlightsduring an error condition, display shows either a diag-
nostic fault code or an online operationalfailure code.
Lights when unit is in diagnostic/test mode.
Ifpressedwhen unit is not online, places the unit in diagnostic/test
mode.
If pressed when unit is in diagnostic/test mode, initiatesdiagnostic
test accordingto number shown ontwo-digit display.

Operation
This sectiondescribes the operationproceduresfor the tape unit. Th minimize the
possibility oferror ordamage to the tapes, it is important that the operator
understand
the use and function of the various controls and indicatorspreviously
explained
in Section 2.
CAUTION
Be suretorelease the door stopbefore closing the tape unit door. Failure
to
do so will result in door alignmentproblems.
Power-on Sequence
OPeration
The power supplycircuit breaker (Figure 3-1) islocated at the top-right cornerof
the tape deck. Press this circuitbreakerto the ONposition(side 1 pressed down).
The LOGIC OFF indicatorwill light momentarily. While
the power-on automatic
self-test isexecuted,
the LOGIC ON and DIAGNOSTICS indicators light and 00
appears on the two-digit display. When the self-testis successfully completed and
the unit is readyfor operation, the DIAGNOSTICS indicator and two-digit dis-
play turn off, and the LOGIC ON and FILE PROTECT indicatorslight.

Power-off Sequence
Press the powersupply circuit breaker to the OFFposition(side 0 presseddown)
to power down
the tape unit.
Note: Pressing
the LOGIC OFF button causes the tape unit to enter a
standbypower condition. Although
the unit isnotoperationalwhen the
LOGIC OFF button is pressed, the ac linevoltage isstill present in the unit.
Tape Loading
Operation
CAUTION
Exercisecare when handling magnetictape and the reel onwhich it is
mounted.
Th loadtape, follow these steps.
1. Make sure the tape unit ispowered on and the LOGIC ON indicatorislit.
2. Unlock the hub latchby pressing the hub release button (Figure 3-2) on the
face of the supplyreel hub.

3. Mount the supply reel onto the hub (clear plasticside of the reelfacing you).
Thebackof
the reel will be pressed against the rear flange (Figure 3-2). If a
write-enable
ring is presenton the reel, the flange will be pressedin. The
flange will be insertedinto
the groove at the back of the reel if a write-enable
is not present.
4. Secure
the reel onto the hub by pressing the hub latch.
5. Thread the magnetic tape over the tape path as shown in Figure 3-3. (A dia-
gram ofthe tape path also appearson the tape deck.)
CAUTION
Be sureto position the tape correctlyover all tape path components in
orderto avoid tape damage.

6. Wrap the tape onto the take-up reel using the following procedures.
a. Secure
the tape leaderby inserting your indexfinger through the opening
in the take-up reel nearestto the tape end. Make sureto holdyour finger on
the tape approximatelyone inchfrom the endof the tape.
Note:
Hang the tape over the take-up reel(Figure 3-4) after threading
for easier tape wrapping.

b. Withyourfinger still securing the tape leader, turn the take-up reel clock-
wise (Figure
3-5) until the tape leaderissmoothly wound beneath one layer
of
the tape. While turning the take-upreel, be sureto provide slackfrom
the supply reelby turning it with yourfree hand.

c. Remove yourfinger and carefully place the samefinger over the portionof
the tape which is covering the tape leader. Make another completeclock-
wise rotationof
the reel.

d. When the tape leaderis secured beneath two layersoftape, remove your
finger
and rotate the reel one ortwo more times until the tape is taut.
7. Close the dust cover door and press the LOADIREWIND button to executea
searchfor
the BOT marker. WhenBOT isfound, the BOT indicatorwill light.
Note:
If no BOT is found, the tape unloads and the RESET indicator
lights.
If this occurs, refer to "Missingor Defective BOT Marker" in
Section4.

Mter the BOT indicatorlights, check the density mode of the tape unit.
(When
the HIGHDENSITY indicatorislit, the unit is in the GCR mode.
When
the HIGH DENSITY indicator is not lit, the unit is in the PE mode.) If
necessary, change the density(see "ChangingDensity" below).
9. Once the correctdensity is determined (BOT indicator stilllit), press the
ON LINE button to place the unit online. The ONLINE button may be
pressed while
the loadoperationis in progress. Oncompletion of the load
operation,
the ON LINE indicatorwill light.
Changing Density
During the power-on sequence, the tape unit defaults to the PE mode. Whena
density change is required, follow these procedures.
1. Make sure the tape ispositioned at the BOT marker. The BOT indicatorwill
be lit.
2. Press
the RESET button and then the LOADIREWIND button toselect the
new density.
TheHIGH DENSITY indicatorlights whenthe tape
unit is in the GCR mode.
The HIGH DENSITY indicator isnot
lit when the tape unit is in the PE mode.
Tape Rewinding
Operation
To rewind tape,follow thesesteps.
1. If the tape unit isoperatingonline and the tape is past the BOT marker, press
the RESET button toplace the tape unit offline. The ON LINE indicatorwill
turnoff.
2. Press the LOADIREWIND button. Thetape will rewind at rewind speed
(2.5 minutesto rewind a 2400-ft reel oftape)
and position itself at the BOT
marker. TheBOT indicator will light.

Tape Unloading
CAUTION
When unloading, ~xercise care when handling magnetic tape and the
reel on which it is mounted.
'lbunloadtape, follow these steps.
1. If the tape unit is operatingonline, press the RESET button toplace the unit
offline. The ONLINE indicatorwill turn oft'.
2. Press the UNLOAD button. The tape will leave the take-up reel and tape path
componentareas torewindonto the supplyreel(2.5 minutes to rewinda 2400-
ft reeloftape).
Tape Dismounting
Operation
Tape must be unloadedpriortodismounting. Ifthe tape is loadedon the take-up
reel,
it must be unloadedaccording to "Tape Unloading" above.
'lbdismount the tape,follow these steps.
1. Open the dust cover door and press the hub release button (Figure 3-3) on the
face of the supply reel hub. The hub will unlatch and the supplyreelcanbe
removed.
2. Close
the dust cover door to prevent dust accumulationon the tape deck
components.
CAUTION
Be sure torelease the door stopbefore closing the tape unit door.
Failure to do so will result in door alignmentproblems.

OperatorMaintenance
Thissection describes preventive, remedial, and tape maintenance procedures
which
must befollowed for the tape unit to operate properly. The tape unit is
designed
to provide a high degree ofreliability to the user while minimizing
maintenance requirements. Thelow maintenance feature, however, is entirely
dependent on the propercare and handling of the tape unit and magnetictape.
( . Preventive Maintenance
Cleaning must beperformed daily or during each eight-hourshift under normal
operatingconditions(every four hours when the tape unit is exposedto excessive
contamination).
Whencleaning,
remember that the recommendedsolvents and equipment must
beused as indicated. Cleaning shouldbe done with a lint-free cloth or cotton, lint-I
free, foam-tipped swabmoistened with Honeywell All Purpose Cleaner. Do not
use isopropyl alcohol.
Mter applyingcleaner, allow a few minutes for the excess
fluid to evaporatebefore mounting a tape.

Before performing the following maintenance,open the dust cover door and make r-'\
sure the supply reel and head assembly dust covers(Figure4-1) are removed. \...,_,,/
CAUTION
Set the power supplycircuit breaker to the OFF position (0 side pressed
down).

Figure 4-2 illustrates the tapedeck components that must becleaned as follows:
• Magnetichead -Clean the magnetic head recordingsurface usinga lint-free
cloth moistened
with Honeywell All Purpose Cleaner. Make sureto wipe the
recordingsurface in the samedirection that the tape.moves across the head
(from toptobottom) applyingsufficientpressure to remove all foreign matter
from the head. Repeat as necessary to insure it isclean.
• Tape cleaner-Use a foam-tipped swab moistened withHoneywell All Purpose
Cleanertoremove
dirt and oxide deposits from the tapecleanerblades.
• EOTIBOT sensor-Use a foam-tipped swab moistened with Honeywell All
Purpose Cleanerto remove
dirt and oxide depositsfrom the EOTIBOT sensor.
