Introduction
Introduction
This section introduces the Model B132L/B160 to a Model B180L upgrade.
Upgrading your Model B132L/B160L to a Model B180L
Your upgrade kit contains a Main Tray Assembly, which, when installed,
upgrades your Model B132L/B160L to a Model B180L.
NOTE: Installing this upgrade in your Model B132L or Model B160 does not affect the
regulatory and safety classifications or approvals. The upgraded system meets all of
the regulatory and safety standards listed in Appendix A of your original owner’s
guide.
Installation Prerequisites
Before the Model B132L/B160L to a Model B180L Upgrade can be
performed, the current system must have an operating system version HP-
UX 10.20 with Additional Core Enhancements (ACE) or greater. The
graphics card option being moved to the new system must also be on the
supported list of cards. If it is not, use the built-in EG graphics or upgrade
the graphics card option to a supported configuration listed in “Prepare Your
Workstation”.

Upgrade Instructions Overview
The general steps for performing the upgrade are outlined as follows and
should be performed in the sequence listed. Refer to the individual sections
of this guide for the actual step-by-step procedures for upgrading the Model
B132/B160 to a Model B180.
1Prepare your workstation
• Update or arrange to have your operating system software updated to HP-UX
10.20 with ACE. This can be a complex task and takes some time and plan-
ning.
If you are at HP-UX 10.20, you can check the HP-UX revision level by run-
ning swlist as superuser.
NOTE: You must back up your system before updating your operating system.
• Determine and WRITE DOWN the graphics configuration of your system.
• Determine and WRITE DOWN the LAN ID of your system. You will need
to re-enter it into the new system board
• Run the bclass_upgrade program.
• Power off the workstation and any peripherals.
• Unplug the power cords and disconnect any peripheral cables
• Remove the floor stand

4Transfer memory modules from the old main tray to the new main tray assembly
5Install additional memory modules on to the new main tray if needed
6Transfer the optional EGRAM module from the old main tray to the new main
tray
7Transfer the optional FWSCSI module from the old main tray to the new main
tray
8Transfer the power supply from the old tray into the new tray.
9Install the storage tray on the new main tray assembly
10 Place the new main tray assembly into the workstation chassis
11 Reinstall the floor stand
12 Connect power cords and cables, restart the workstation, and enter the LAN ID
when prompted

1Verify that the HP-UX operating system is at a minimum level of 10.20 with
ACE. If the workstation is running a version of HP-UX lower than 10.20ACE,
update the operating system software before continuing. This software must be
loaded before performing this upgrade. RUN SWLIST AS IN C_CLASS
2Verify that the graphics card(s) installed in your Model B132L/B160L are sup-
ported on the Model B180L. The /usr/bin/graphinfo command will display the
current graphics card(s) information.
The following graphics options are supported:
• VISUALIZE-8, 24
• VISUALIZE EG, Dual EG
3Determine the workstations LAN ID by entering the following at the prompt:
/usr/sbin/lanscan
The output is similar to the following:

After you install the new main tray and power on the system for the first time,
you are prompted for the LAN ID. Record the information here so you have a
record of it:
EtherLAN ID ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___-___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___
You must supply the dash (-) between the first six digits and the last six digits.
For example, the above address is 080009-70ECC0
4If you are going to install additional memory on the new main tray assembly, de-
termine the current memory configuration for your workstation by using the in-
formation described in Appendix D, of your Owners Guide, “Boot Console
Interface”.
5Next, you need to run the upgrade utility program to automatically convert the
hardware paths stored in the system’s I/O configuration file. You should only run
thisutilityifyouaregoingtocompletetherestofthehardwareupgradedescribed
in this document.

Enter the following command to run the upgrade utility program:
/usr/sam/lbin/bclass_upgrade
The upgrade utility prompts you to confirm that you want to continue, as fol-
lows:
Are you ready to perform the upgrade (y/n [n])?
Enter Y.
The upgrade utility proceeds to modify the I/O configuration information that is
stored in the files /etc/ioconfig and /stand/ioconfig to be compatible with the
upgraded system. The original I/O configuration information is saved in the
backup file /etc/ioconfig.pre_upgrade.
NOTICE: The bclass_upgrade utility modifies the hardware configuration so that it
is incompatible with a Model B132L or B160L system. After running the
utility, you must continue with this upgrade or restore the configuration
information from /etc/ioconfig.pre_upgrade to /etc/ioconfig and /stand/
ioconfig.
6Power off your workstation by pressing the power button on the front panel.
When you press the power button, the workstation automatically shuts down the
operating system before it powers off the system.
If your system has supported graphics adapters installed, continue with step 5, other-
wise skip to step 9.
7When the workstation has completed shutting down and powering off, power it
back on.
8If a message to press Esc to stop the boot process is displayed, then press Esc.
This stops the boot process and brings you to the Boot Console Handler prompt.
9Enter the following command to display the console path setting:
pa con
The graphics path for the default console device is displayed. Make note of this
information below for later use.

10 Enter the following command to display the monitor type setting:
co mo
The monitor type for the default console device is displayed. Write down the
graphics number and monitor type.
For example, Monitor type: “Graphics(0)” type 12
11 Power off your workstation by pressing the power button on the front panel.
12 When the workstation has completed shutting down and powering off, power off
the monitor, and any peripheral devices connected to the workstation.
WARNING: To avoid electrical shock, make sure you unplug the power cable from the wall
outlet and the system unit before proceeding any further.
CAUTION The internal components of your workstation are susceptible to mechanical and
electrostatic shock. To prevent such damage from occurring, observe the following
precautions during the installation procedure
•Stand on a static-free mat
•Wearastatic-groundingwrist strap to ensure that anyaccumulatedelectrostatic charge
discharges from your body to ground. Attach the static-grounding wrist strap by fol-
lowing the instructions on the package that contains the strap. Be sure to attach one
end of the strap to the system chassis
13 Unplug the power cord of the system unit, the monitor, and any peripheral devic-
es from ac wall outlets.
14 Unplug the power cord from the back of the system unit.
15 Remove the floor stand from the system unit, as shown in Figure 1, if applicable.
16 Remove the monitor from on top of the system unit and set it aside, if applicable.
CAUTION Removal of the monitor from on top of the system unit is to prevent
possible damage to the system unit or the monitor while performing this
upgrade.
17 Lay the system unit on a flat surface, such as a table top.
18 Attach a static-grounding wrist strap to bare metal on the back of the system unit.

1Completely remove the four thumb screws on the rear of the system unit, as
shown in Figure 2.

2Place one hand on the top of the system unit and push, while pulling the handle
on the rear panel with your other hand. See Figure 2.
3Slide the main tray assembly out of the chassis.
CAUTION To avoid damaging the interface card at the front of the main tray assembly,
hold the main tray assembly on the left and right sides when lifting it out of
the system unit.

1Disconnect the cables from the system board and the optional FWSCSI control-
ler, as shown in Figure 3.
When disconnecting the floppy cable use the following procedure:
aLift the locking ring on the connector to the up, or unlocked position.
bWhile holding the locking ring in the unlocked position, pull the cable out of
the connector.
2Disconnect any cables and/or terminators from the SCSI connectors on the rear
of the chassis.
3Remove the storage tray retaining screw, as shown in Figure 3.
