Where to Find Information
Your PC’s Online Brio Center
HP Brio Center - Use this online information center to access information on using
your PC, using Windows, and fixing problems with your PC. You can also use the HP
Brio Center to access the HP Brio support web site. For more information, refer to
“Easy Access to Information with the Brio Center” on page 10.
HP Brio Internet Center (available in some countries only)- Click on the HP Brio Internet
Center desktop shortcut or click on the button within the HP Brio Center to access a
range of Web-based information and services. For more information, refer to“Get
Connected with the HP Brio Internet Center” on page 11.

Important Safety Information
For your safety, never remove the PC’s cover without first removing the power cord and any
connection to a telecommunications network. Always replace the cover before switching the
PC on again.
For your safety, always connect equipment to a grounded electrical wall outlet. Always use a
power cord with a properly grounded plug, such as the one provided with the equipment, or
one in compliance with your national safety standards. The equipment can be disconnected
from the power by removing the power cord from the power outlet. This means the equipment
must be located close to an easily accessible electrical outlet.
To avoid electrical shock, do not open the power supply. There are no user-serviceable parts
inside.
There is a danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly installed. For your safety, never
attempt to recharge, disassemble or burn an old battery. Only replace the battery with the
same or equivalent type, as recommended by the manufacturer. The battery in this PC is a
lithium battery that does not contain any heavy metals. Nevertheless, in order to protect the
environment, do not dispose of batteries in household waste. Please return used batteries
either to the shop from which you bought them, or to the dealer from whom you purchased
your PC, or to HP, so that they can either be recycled or disposed of in the correct way.
Returned used batteries will be accepted free of charge.
Do not attempt to connect this product to the phone line during a lightning storm. Never
install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the telephone line has been disconnected at the
network interface. Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone
line has been disconnected at the network interface. Use caution when installing or modifying
telephone lines. Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during a lightning storm.
There may be a risk from lightning. Do not use the telephone to report a gas leak in the vicinity
of the leak. Never touch or remove the communications board without first removing the
connection to the telephone network.

Unpacking the Computer and the Monitor
Remove the computer and the monitor from their boxes. When you have finished
unpacking the boxes, you will find the items shown here. Your monitor or keyboard
may be different from the ones shown here.
Choosing a Comfortable Workspace
Choose a workspace for your computer near a grounded electrical wall outlet.
If your monitor has a tilt-swivel base, attach it to the monitor as described in the
monitor manual. Position the monitor on your desk.
Position the computer to allow proper ventilation and access to the cables.
Warning If you are in any doubt that you can lift the equipment safely, do not try to move it
without help.

Before starting up the PC, connect devices and power cords to the rear of the PC as
shown below:
Caution Check that the correct power supply voltage is selected for your country (the voltage is
set during manufacturing and should already be correct).
Note
* If you have a Brio BA600 PC with an add-on video card fitted, you must connect your
monitor to the connector on the add-on video card and not to the monitor connector
shown above.

Connecting Other Equipment to Your PC
To use external devices such as a printer, scanner, digital camera or USB modem or to
connect to a LAN (local area network), connect device cables to the rear of your PC
as shown below:
Warning
If your PC is a multimedia model, or if you have installed a sound card in your PC,
always turn the volume down before connecting headphones or speakers to avoid
discomfort from unexpected noise or static. Listening to loud sounds for prolonged
periods of time may permanently damage your hearing. Before putting on
headphones, place them around your neck and turn the volume down. When you put
the headphones on, slowly increase the volume until you find a comfortable listening
level. When you are able to hear comfortably and clearly, without distortion, leave the
volume in that position.
If you have a modem:
Do not attempt to connect this product to the telephone line during a lightning storm.
Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the telephone line has been
disconnected at the network interface. Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or
terminals unless the telephone line has been disconnected at the network interface.
Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.
Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during a lightning storm. There
may be a risk from lightning. Do not use the telephone to report a gas leak in the
vicinity of the leak. All inputs and outputs are extra-safety low-voltage circuits, except
the telephone and line connectors, which are telecommunications network voltage
circuits. Always disconnect the host computer from any analog telephone circuits
before removing any covers. Never touch or remove the communications card without
first removing the connection to the telephone network.

To start the PC, press the On/Off button.
Setting Up Windows for the First Time
When your PC starts up for the first time, you will have to enter the unique Product
ID provided with Windows.
When prompted, simply type in the Product ID printed on the Microsoft Certificate of
Authenticity (usually on the front of your Windows documentation).

The HP Brio Center
When your Brio starts up it launches the HP Brio Center. This online application
contains the following links:
•HP Brio Internet Center (only available in some countries) - use to set up an Internet
connection, monitor Internet usage, create your own Web site and online store, or
access Web-based information of interest to the small business.
•UsingyourHPBrioPC -usetogetadviceonusingyourmouse,keyboard,USBmodem,
DVDandCD-RWdrives,iffitted.Alsoprovidesadviceon working comfortably with
your PC, and allows you to access the Windows tour.
•Fix a Problem - use to troubleshoot your HP Brio PC.
•Register Now! - this allows you to register your PC electronically for support if your
PC has an Internet connection.

Using Your PC’s Desktop
The Desktop
The desktop is where you can place various things — folders, files and shortcuts to
programs you use regularly. It is also the place where program windows are displayed,
such as the HP Brio Center window.
The Recycle Bin
This is a temporary storage place for files you have deleted. It fills up with all the
files you have deleted until you decide to empty it. You can use it to find things
you might have deleted by mistake.

All the features described in this section are standard to Windows. For further details on
any of these features, together with details on general Windows functionality, please
refer to the relevant Windows documentation, or the Windows Help system.

Using Your PC’s Desktop
Icons
Icons are small graphical objects that represent a particular feature,
area or application (program) on your computer. Double-clicking on
them opens that feature. They can be dragged around the desktop or placed in the
recycle bin.
The Taskbar
The taskbar is at the bottom of your window by default. It shows you which
applications are running — represented by a taskbar button (the taskbar below shows
that the HP Brio Center window is open).
The Start Button
Click on the Start button and a pop-up menu appears from which you can
perform many different tasks — start programs, open documents, find help,
search for things on your computer, and change settings within your computer.
Taskbar Buttons
Every time you open a program, a button for that program
appears on the taskbar. To switch between programs, simply
click on the taskbar button for the program you want.
Notification Area
Depending on what you are working on with your HP Brio PC,
small indicators may appear in the notification area (to the left of
the clock). If you are printing, for example, appears. Double-clicking on any of
these indicators brings up a window where you can change some of the settings. For
example, try double-clicking on and change your volume settings.
You can find out more about your Windows desktop by following the Windows Tour
(click on Using Your HP Brio PC - Windows Tour in the HP Brio Center) or by referring to
the Windows documentation supplied with your computer.

The Brio Center window is displayed when you first start up your PC. To stop the Brio
Center appearing every time, click on the check box in the Brio Center window. You
can then access the HP Brio Center by:
• double-clicking on the HP Brio Center shortcut on your PC’s Desktop, or
• selecting HP Brio Center in the Start menu.
The HP Brio Center helps you get the most out of your PC, quickly and efficiently —
letting you concentrate on your work, while at the same time being your first point of
reference for all questions you might have.
From the HP Brio Center you can access:
•HPBrioInternet Center (only available in some countries). Click on to connect to
the Internet and access Internet-based services tailored to the needs of the small
business. See ”Get Connected with the HP Brio Internet Center” on page 11 for
more details.
•UsingYour HP Brio PC - Click on to learn how to use your HP Brio PC. See ”Using
Your Brio” on page 12 for details.
•Fix a Problem - Click on to learn how to fix detailed problems with your HP Brio
PC. See ”Fix a Problem” on page 13 for details. You can find more troubleshooting
information in chapter 3 of this manual.
•Register Now - register your HP Brio PC electronically — only if you have a direct
connection to the Internet. See ”Registering Your PC” below for details.

Registering Your PC
By registering your HP Brio PC, HP gets a clearer view of your needs and can serve
you much better. When you register your HP Brio PC, you are automatically entered
in a prize draw where you could win another HP product.
Electronic Registration
Registering electronically could not be simpler — simply click on the Register Now!
button on the HP Brio Center (if you have an Internet connection).
Non-electronic Registration
If your HP Brio PC is not fitted with a modem or you are in a region where electronic
registration is not possible, please return the registration card (when provided with
your PC).
Get Connected with the HP Brio Internet Center
You can access the Internet Center by:
• clicking on from within the HP Brio Center, or
• double-clicking on the Brio Internet Center shortcut on your Desktop, or
• selecting HP Brio Internet Center in the Start menu

The Internet Center provides access to a series of Internet-based services allowing you
to:
•Connect for the first time - click on to sign up with an Internet service provider.
•Get Business Information - click on to access the HP and favored Internet
partners’ small business Web site (available in some regions only).
•CreateaWebSite- click on to set up your own Web site offline and post it on the
Web.
•Create an Online Store - click on to set up an online store to sell your products
over the Web (available in some regions only).
•Control Your Costs - monitor the costs of your Internet connection (available in some
regions only).

The Using Your Brio window provides the following links:
•Getting Started - click on for tips on using the mouse, keyboard, modem and, if
fitted, CD-RW and DVD drives.
•Windows Tour- click on for a guided tour of Windows.

Fix a Problem is an online source of tips on how to solve problems with your PC. It
includes:

Try this before any other troubleshooting.
•TroubleshootYourPC - click on fortips onsolving problemswhen usingyour PC.
Topics covered include basic problems with Windows, your DVD drive or USB
modem.
•Diagnose Your Hardware - click on for information on how to run DiagTools to
check your PC’s hardware for problems. This easy-to-use utility can perform a
thorough check on your system, helping you solve hardware problems quickly and
easily.
•GettheLatest Updates- click on to access the Brio support web site for the latest
updates for preloaded software and drivers.

Using Your Software
When a program is installed in your PC, you can launch it by selecting it from the Start
menu on your taskbar. You can also create a desktop shortcut so that you can launch a
program directly from the desktop.
To create a desktop shortcut:
1Open the Program Files folder in Windows Explorer. You can open the Windows Explorer
window by selecting Start - Programs - Windows Explorer.
2Double click on the folder containing the program to view its contents.
3Find the file used to launch the program. The file name will end in .exe.
4Select the file by clicking on it once with the mouse then click on the right mouse
button. This makes a pop-up menu appear.
5Select Create Shortcut. This creates a shortcut file in the current folder.
6Click on the newly created file and drag it onto the PC’s desktop.
7If you want to rename the file, simply click on its title and type in the new name.

from the Start menu.
