Electrostatic Discharge Warning
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage processors, memory, disks, accessory
boards and other components.
Before installing or replacing a component:
1Do not take the new component out of its ESD package before connecting your
wrist strap and ESD mat to a suitably earthed point.
2Do not forget to use the ESD package provided with the new part to return the
old part. The ESD package is conductive and is easy to recognize from its label.

Care of Hard Disk Drives
HP hard disk drives are delicate and are very sensitive to shocks or vibration.
When installing a hard disk accessory, be careful not to drop or knock the drive.
Any shock may damage the drive and prevent it from functioning correctly.
Hard disk drives already installed in HP Vectra PCs are also sensitive to shocks. If
the PC’s system unit is knocked or dropped accidentally, this may cause damage to
installed hard disk drives.

BIOS and System

Features
● New Multiple-Boot capability.
User can choose the boot device when the PC is powered-on.
● System Management Bus for transmission of system health alerts.
(For example, chassis intrusion detection or memory module failure.)
● Chassis Intrusion Detection. An alert is generated on the System
Management Bus when the cover of the PC is removed during operation. If
the cover is removed when the PC is switched off, the alert will be generated
when the PC is next switched on. This alert can be monitored with HP
TopTOOLS.
● Memory Module failure detection using Serial Presence Detect technology.
Information on memory modules (module type, HP part number, ECC errors,
etc.) is stored in a Serial EEPROM on the memory module itself. A memory
failure will generate a detailed alert on the System Management Bus. This
alert can be monitored with HP TopTOOLS.

Key Features
Ultra ATA The Ultra ATA interface enables the Ultra DMA/33 protocol to increase the
burst data transfer rate to 33 megabytes per second. Additionally, Ultra ATA
provides new data verification checks to ensure the integrity of transferred
data. Ultra ATA maintains backward compatibility with the existing ATA
standard for IDE devices. This means devices which transfer data at differ-
ent speeds may be connected to the same Ultra ATA data cable; the system
will detect and use the correct speed for each device. Note that Ultra ATA
drives and IDE devices can be connected to either the Primary IDE connec-
tor or to the Secondary IDE connector. However, use of a non-Ultra ATA IDE
cable on either connector is not supported for Ultra ATA drives (the perfor-
mance of an Ultra ATA drive with a non-Ultra ATA cable could be unpredict-
able and lead to data loss).
Multi Boot With the Multi Boot feature, the order in which your PC will boot from a
device is no longer determined by the physical connection of the device. The
user can connect IDE devices to the Ultra ATA cable in any order and then
select the boot order for all bootable drives (including floppy drive, CD-ROM
drive, and SCSI drives) with the HP Setup program.
Intel 440LX AGPset
Features
This Intel chipset is optimized for Pentium II processor-based systems. It
provides support for ACPI to permit increased manageability across the cor-
porate network. It is AGP-enabled for enhanced graphics performance. The
chipset also provides support for Ultra DMA/33.
Advanced Configuration
and Power Interface
ACPI is an open standard for enabling the operating system to control power
management in a PC. It enables a PC to switch on instantly when the user
needs it and remain available for remote management when switched off.
Accelerated Graphics
Port and RAMBUS
AGP technology accelerates the flow of data between the Pentium II proces-
sor, the video graphics controller, and system memory. It also allows the
transfer of graphics tasks off the PCI bus, freeing PCI bandwidth for other I/
O-intensive applications. The integrated Cirrus Logic Laguna3D graphics
accelerator supports AGP and also uses the RAMBUS memory architecture
which supports data transfers at up to 540 MHz between the graphics accel-
erator and the RAMBUS memory.

Key Features
Universal Serial Bus Users can connect USB accessories to the PC without any need to remove
the cover or restart the operating system, reducing support costs. Note that
USB is not supported by all operating systems.
Remote Power On and
Remote Wake Up
Connector
This connector is provided for HP LAN adapters only, which support
Remote Power On (RPO) and Remote Wake Up (RWU). RPO and RWU can
be used by certain network management applications to remotely power on
the PC across the network to perform management tasks.
Wake on LAN Connector This connector is provided for third-party LAN adapters which support the
Wake on LAN (WOL) feature. Like RPO/RWU, WOL can be used by certain
network management applications to switch on the PC to perform
management tasks.
PCI Wake Up Connector The PCI Wake Up connector provides additional signal lines between the
system board and the PCI backplane. These additional signal lines provide
support for Remote Wake Up over the PCI bus. This feature is only
supported by ACPI-compliant LAN adapters and operating systems (for
example, Windows 98 and Windows NT 5.5 will support this feature when
available).

Before replacing the system board:
• Verify that the latest driver versions have been installed
• Check that the latest BIOS version has been installed
• Ensure that the problem isn’t described in the product bug list
• Make sure that you are electrostatically grounded.
Replacing the System
Board
The system board is secured in place by the familiar system board handle
mechanism.
Once the replacement system board has been installed, insert the back end
of the left-hand bottom panel into its slots in the back panel of the
computer, and then push the front end until it clips into place.

Flashing the Latest Version of the System BIOS
BIOS upgrades can be downloaded, on to flexible diskette, from the
HP World Wide Web site: http://www.hp.com/go/vectrasupport/
Following the instructions which you are given, you will obtain the flash
utility programs, FLASH.BAT, AUTOEXEC.BAT and PHLASH.EXE programs,
the BIOS file, <bios file>.FUL, and the platform file <platform file>.bin, on
a bootable flexible diskette.
Insert the flexible diskette into drive A. Re-boot the system. Enter the
command FLASH <bios file>.FUL .
Crisis Recovery
Although the BIOS flash process is very well protected, there is always a
possibility of a failure (for example, due to a power failure during the BIOS
flash). To avoid replacing the motherboard due to corrupted EEPROM, a
crisis recovery function has been created to restore the contents.
1Create a bootable flexible disk and copy phlash.exe , the platform file and
your bios image file to the disk.
2Create a new autoexec.bat with the following line in it:
phlash /V /mode=3 /b=<platform file>.bin /exit <bios file>.ful
3Toggle motherboard switch 9 to the CLOSED position.
4Insert the flexible disk.
5Power on the system and hear it flash (no image is shown!). The last long
beep indicates the end of the flashing.
6Power off the system.
7Toggle back switch 9 to the OPEN position, then remove the flexible disk.
The BIOS is now recovered and updated.
NOTE • The power button is not protected in recovery flashing mode. However,
since /pf=b option is not used, we don't flash the bootblock, thus shutting
down during the phlash update is not critical.
• Flashing in recovery mode is blind (no video is displayed), except if you
install an external ISA video card.
