Using SCSI
Your Vectra has a SCSI controller and SCSI hard disk drive for high-end
performance and open-ended flexibility. The SCSI controller can
support up to seven SCSI devices.
Use this guide if you want to install an additional SCSI device or
configure a SCSI accessory.

Connecting an External SCSI Accessory
To connect an external SCSI accessory to your computer, do the
following:
1Assign an unused SCSI address to the accessory (typically, this is
done by setting jumpers on the SCSI accessory). Refer to the manual
provided with the SCSI accessory for instructions on selecting a SCSI
address.
SCSI addresses range from 0 to 7, with SCSI address 0 used by the
first SCSI hard disk drive and SCSI address 7 reserved for the
integrated SCSI controller (default setting).
NOTE You don’t need to set a SCSI address for Plug and Play SCSI devices
(SCSI devices which support the SCAM protocol).
2Connect the SCSI accessory to your computer’s external SCSI
connector with a shielded SCSI cable.

NOTE The total length of the external SCSI cable or cables should not exceed
3 meters (approximately 10 feet).
Contact your dealer to order shielded HP SCSI cables to connect
external SCSI accessories.

Connecting an Internal SCSI Accessory
Refer to the chapter “How to Install Accessories” in your computer’s
User’s Guide for information about installing internal devices.
Your computer has an internal SCSI cable for connecting SCSI devices.
When installing an internal SCSI device, note the following:
•Refer to the documentation that came with the SCSI device for
information about jumper settings and special installation
procedures.
•The internal SCSI cable in your computer is already terminated. You
do not need to terminate any internal SCSI device.

ATTENTION The SCSISelect utility is intended for advanced users only.
Note that the SCSISelect options displayed on your screen
may be different from those described here.
The SCSISelect utility is accessed by pressing + the “A”key
when prompted during the computer’s start-up process. The message
Press <Ctrl><A> for SCSISelect(TM) Utility! is displayed.
(For French and Arabic French keyboards, press + the “Q” key.)
Viewing the Options
menu
When you run the SCSISelect utility, the Options menu is displayed.
Use the and keys and the key to make selections in
the SCSISelect utility. Press at any time to return to the previous
menu.

Would you like to configure the interface, or run the
SCSI disk utilities? Select the option and press <Enter>.
Press <F5> to switch between color and monochrome modes.

Interface Settings Menu
It is recommend that these settings are not changed.
SCSI Channel Interface Definitions:
•Interface SCSI ID
Changes the interface SCSI ID from its default value of 7 (which has
the highest priority on the SCSI bus).
•SCSI Parity Checking
Enable or disable host adapter SCSI parity checking. Most currently
available SCSI devices do support SCSI parity. You should disable
SCSI Parity Checking if any of the attached SCSI devices do not
support SCSI parity.
•Host Adapter SCSI Termination
Sets termination on the SCSI adapter. When set to the default
Automatic, the SCSI adapter automatically enables and disables its
terminators as needed.

•SCSI Device Configuration
Press to display the SCSI Device Configuration menu.
•Advanced Configuration Options
Press to view the Advanced Configuration Options menu.
Boot Device
Configuration Menu
This menu lets you configure the SCSI boot device. To know the SCSI ID
of a specific SCSI device, you can run the SCSI Disk Utilities (refer to
page 12).
Use the and keys to move between options. Press to
display a menu with a selection of values.
•Boot Target ID
This parameter is the SCSI ID of the device to boot on. The default
value is 0.
•Boot Lun Number
More advanced SCSI devices can have several logical units. This
option indicates the logical unit (or Lun) on which to boot for the
drive chosen in the Boot Target ID. The default value is 0.

SCSI Device
Configuration Menu
This menu lets you configure parameters for each SCSI device on the
SCSI bus. To configure a specific SCSI device, you need to know which
SCSI ID it uses. To know the SCSI ID of a specific SCSI device, you can
run the SCSI Disk Utilities (refer to page 12).
Use the and keys to move between options. Press to
display a menu with a selection of values.
•Initiate Sync Negotiation
Some older SCSI-1 devices do not support synchronous negotiation.
Set Initiate Sync Negotiation to No for these devices.
•Maximum Sync Transfer Rate
If the SCSI device is an UltraSCSI device, you can use the maximum
value of 20.0 MB/s. For Fast SCSI devices you can select a maximum
transfer rate of 10.0 MB/s.
Certain older SCSI-1 devices do not support Ultra SCSI (up to
20.0 MB/s) or Fast SCSI data transfer rates (up to 10.0 MB/s).
Select a Maximum Sync Transfer Rate of 5.0 MB/s for these devices.

•Enable Disconnection
To optimize SCSI bus performance, Enable Disconnection should be
set to Yes when two or more SCSI devices are connected to the host
adapter. Set Enable Disconnection to No to achieve slightly better
performance when only one SCSI device is connected to the SCSI
bus.
•Send Start Unit Command
When set to Yes this option reduces the load on your computer’s
power supply by allowing the interface to power-up SCSI devices
one-at-a-time when you start your computer. When set to No each
SCSI device powers up at the same time.
This option is not supported by some SCSI devices. Some SCSI
devices require a jumper to be changed before they can respond to
this command.

•Plug and Play Scam Support
When enabled, this option automatically configures Plug and Play
compatible SCSI devices. For SCSI devices that do not support Plug
and Play, set this option to Disabled. By default, it is enabled.
•Host Adapter BIOS
This option enables or disables the SCSI Adapter BIOS. Several
options in SCSISelect utility are only valid if the SCSI adapter BIOS
is enabled. The SCSI adapter BIOS must be enabled if the computer
boots from a SCSI hard disk drive. This option is enabled by default.
•Support Removable Disks Under BIOS as Fixed Disks
When Boot Only is selected, only the removable media drive
designated as the boot device is treated as a hard disk drive.
If All Disks is selected, all removable-media drives supported by
the BIOS are treated as hard disk drives.
No removable-media drives are treated as hard disk drives when
Disabled is selected. In this case, removable-media drives must be
controlled through operating system drivers.
•Extended BIOS Translation for DOS Drives >1 GByte
This option is enabled by default with the following translation
schemes:
❒SCSI hard disks ≤ 1 GByte use a translation scheme of 64 heads,
32 sectors per track
❒SCSI hard disks > 1 GByte use a translation scheme of 255 heads,
63 sectors per track.
CAUTION Ensure that you back up all your data before changing the translation
scheme . All data will be erased when you change from one translation
scheme to another.
•Display <Ctrl A> Message During BIOS Initialization
When enabled, this option displays the message Press <Ctrl><A>
for SCSISelect(TM) Utility during BIOS initialization. When
disabled, this message is not displayed, although you can still press
and the “A” key for the SCSISelect utility ( and the
“Q” key for French and Arabic French keyboards). This option is
enabled by default.

•Multiple LUN Support
This option determines whether booting a SCSI device that has
multiple LUNs is supported. Set this option to Enabled if your boot
device has multiple LUNs. It is disabled by default.
•BIOS Support for Bootable CD-ROM
When enabled, this option provides BIOS support for booting from a
CD-ROM drive. It is enabled by default.
•BIOS Support for Int13 Extensions
When enabled, this option provides BIOS support for hard disk
drives with more than 1024 cylinders. It is enabled by default.
•Support for Ultra SCSI Speed
When enabled, the SCSI adapter supports the fast transfer rates of
Ultra SCSI devices (13.4 MB/s, 16 MB/s and 20 MB/s). It is enabled
by default.
SCSI Disk Utilities When the SCSI Disk Utilities are selected from the initial Options menu,
the SCSISelect utility scans the SCSI bus and lists all the SCSI devices
on the SCSI bus. The list shows the SCSI ID and name of each SCSI
device. You can use this list to discover the SCSI ID of any device on the
SCSI bus.
Use the and keys to highlight a device and press to
display the Format Disk/Verify Media menu.
•Format Disk
This utility can be used to perform a low-level format of a hard disk.
Most SCSI disks are preformatted and do not need low-level
formatting.
•Verify Disk Media
This utility scans for media defects on the selected SCSI device.
Press the key to abort this utility.

Troubleshooting
If the SCSI Hard Disk Does Not Work
1Check that the hard disk drive has not been locked in the computer’s
Setup program.
•In the Security menu, select Hardware Protection.
In the Integrated IDE Controllers section, the option Hard
Disks / CD-ROM should be set to Unlocked for the SCSI hard
disk drive to be available for use.
Also, if the option Hard Disk Boot Sector is set to Locked,
the boot sector of your SCSI hard disk drive is write-protected.
•The Start-Up Center in the Security menu may also be used
to disable or enable starting from a hard disk.
2Check that the SCSI adapter and all the SCSI devices have unique
SCSI IDs. (To view the SCSI IDs currently assigned, you can use the
SCSI Disk Utilities - refer to “SCSI Disk Utilities” on page 12.)
3If you have an external SCSI device, check that the external SCSI
cable is correctly terminated (refer to page 4).
Note that the internal SCSI cable of your computer is already
terminated. Ensure that you do not enable the terminator on any of
the internal SCSI devices.
4Check that the disk power and data cables are correctly connected
(refer to the chapter in your User’s Guide about installing
accessories).
5Ensure that the SCSI adapter board is firmly and securely inserted in
its PCI slot.
6Check that power management has been correctly configured.

7If you have connected a SCSI accessory which is not SCAM
compatible, then set the Plug and Play Scam Support option in
the SCSISelect utility to Disabled (refer to page 10).
To know if a SCSI accessory is SCAM compatible, refer to the
manual provided with the accessory.
8Check that the SCSI devices are recognized at computer start-up
(boot). The SCSI devices recognized by the computer are listed after
the message Press <Ctrl><A> for SCSISelect(TM) Utility!
is displayed. Alternatively, you can consult the list displayed in the
SCSI Disk Utilities screen of the SCSISelect utility (refer to page 12).
If the Hard Disk Activity Light Does Not Work
The hard disk drive activity light on the front panel of your computer is
not activated when the SCSI hard disk drive is used. This hard disk
activity light indicates IDE hard disk activity only.
