Overview
Afteryouhavetaken somephotoswithyourHPPhotoSmartC500DigitalCamera,you canviewthem onthe
camera’s color LCD or on a television screen. Depending on the camera mode you use (Review or Play), you can:
•viewthumbnailsof yourphotos
•viewonephotoat atime usingthe entirescreen
•playbackBurst,Timelapse,andgroupedphotosequences
•create a slideshow

UsingReviewMode
WhenyouuseReviewmode,the colorLCDautomaticallydisplaysthephotossavedonthememorycard.Your
photosappearas smallthumbnailimages acrossthetopof thedisplay.A largerthumbnailof theselectedphoto
appears below the small thumbnails; the photo information (the image number, the image date and time, and the
grouporcameraname)appearsonthelowerright ofthe display.
Selecting Photos
To select photos:
1. Turnthecameraon andturnthe cameramodedialtoRev.
2. Usethe4-wayarrowbuttonto scrollthroughthe
thumbnailsuntiltheselectionmarker points tothephoto
you want. Pressandholdthe button toscroll through your
photosrapidly.

MarkingPhotos
You can “mark” several photos so that whenyou select an action, the actionapplies toallmarked photos.For
example,youcanmark severalphotosanddeletethemallat once,ratherthandeletingonephotoata time.If you
markanyphotothatrepresents aclosedgroup,allthephotosinthe grouparemarked.
To mark photos:
1. Turnthecameraon andturnthe cameramodedialto
Rev.
2. Usethe4-wayarrowbutton toscrolltothe photoyou
want to mark.
3. PresstheMark button(left softkey).
Anotchappearsonthelower rightcornerof the
selectedphotoand itsmatching thumbnail.
4. RepeatSteps2 and3 tomark additionalphotos.
OR
To markallphotos,pressandholddowntheMark button(leftsoft key)until Mark All appearsonthelower
overlay bar.
Note: Photosremainmarkeduntil youperformanactiononthem,or untilyouunmarkthem.

To unmark marked photos:
1. Turnthecameraon andturnthe cameramodedialtoRev.
2. Usethe4-wayarrowbutton toscrolltothe photoyou wanttounmark.
3. PresstheUnmark button(left softkey).
Thenotchdisappearsfrom thelowerrightcornerofthe selected photoanditsmatchingthumbnail.
YoucanunmarkallthephotosonthememorycardbypressingandholdingdowntheUnmarkbutton(leftsoft
key) until Unmark All appearsonthe loweroverlaybar.
Deleting Photos
YoucandeleteasinglephotoorallmarkedphotosinReviewmode.YoucanalsodeletesinglephotosinPlaymode
(see “Deleting Photos” on page 89).
Note: Protectedphotoswillnot bedeleted.See“ProtectingPhotos”on page72for moreinformation.
To delete photos:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Rev.
2. Selectaphotoormarkthephotosyouwanttodelete.Ifyouwanttodeleteallthephotos,youcanchoose“Mark
All.”See“MarkingPhotos”on page70 formore information.
Ifyouwantto deleteallof thephotosin agroup,ora TimelapseorBurstseries,youcan closeorcollapsethe
photos,untiljustthe onephotothatrepresentsthegroupor seriesisshowing.Youcanthenselectthephotoas
youwoulda singleStillphoto,fordeleting.

3. PresstheMenubutton.
4. Pressthe Delete button(centersoftkey).
ThecolorLCDdisplaysa messageaskingyoutoconfirmthat youwantto deletethe photos.
5. Pressthe Delete button(leftsoftkey)todeletethephotos.
Protecting Photos
Protectingphotospreventsthemfrombeingdeletedfromthememorycard.Youalsocannotchangethecategoryof
protectedphotos.
To protect photos:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Rev.
2. Selecta photoormarkthe photosyouwantto protect.See“MarkingPhotos”on page70 formoreinformation.
Note: Protectactsonmarkedphotosifthereareany,oronthecurrentphotoif therearenomarkedphotos.If
youwantto protectjustthecurrentphoto,firstunmarkallthe photosonthememorycard.
3. PresstheMenubutton.
4. Usethe4-way arrowbuttontoscrollto Protect.
5. Pressthe Protect button(centersoftkey).
TheProtectedicon appearsinthe photoinformationtoindicatethatthe photoisprotected.

To remove protection from photos:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Rev.
2. Selecta photoormark thephotosyouwant tounprotect.See“MarkingPhotos”onpage70 formore
information.
3. PresstheMenubutton.
4. Usethe4-way arrowbuttontoscrollto Protect.
5. Pressthe Unprotectbutton(leftsoftkey).
Note: You must unprotect your protected photos before you can delete them.
CategorizingPhotos
You canassigna categorytoyourphotos,makingthem easiertofind.Youcancategorizeonephotoat atime,or
markphotosandapplyonecategoryto allofthe marked photos.Categoriesare alsousefulwhenyou arecreating
a slideshow. Forexample, you could create a slideshow to share your vacation photoswith friends and family.
Note: You cannotassignor change categories forprotectedphotos.
To categorize photos:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Rev.
2. Selecta photoormark thephotosyouwantto categorize. See“MarkingPhotos”onpage70 formore
information.

To change a category:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Rev.
2. Selectthe photowhosecategoryyouwantto change.
3. PresstheCategory button(centersoftkey).
4. Usethe4-way arrowbuttontoscrollto thenew categoryyouwant toselect.
5. Pressthe Select button(leftsoftkey)todeselectthe oldcategoryandselectthe newcategory.
Thecameraautomaticallyexitsthemenus. Thenewcategoryiconappearsin thephotoinformation.
GroupingPhotos
Groupingphotosissimilartocategorizingthem.An importantdifferenceisthatgroupingalsoaffectsthe
organizationofphotosonthe memorycard.When youcreatea group,youarecreatingafolderon thememory
card,like youwouldcreatea folderonthe harddriveofyourcomputer.Asyou addphotostothegroup,theyare
organized in the group’s folder.
You can combine groups and categories. Individual photos within a group can each belong to a different category,
oryou canputall ofthephotosina groupintoone category.
Note: Ifa groupisclosed,markingthephotothatrepresentsthe group,marksallthephotosin thegroup.

CreatingandRemovingGroups
To create a new group:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Rev.
2. Selecta photoormarkthe photosyouwantto grouptogether.See“MarkingPhotos”on page70for more
information.
3. PresstheMenubutton.
4. Usethe4-way arrowbuttontoscrollto Group.
5. Pressthe Create button(leftsoftkey).
Note: TheCreate button is available only when there are no existing
groups.If thereare existinggroups,pressthe Add button(left
soft key), then press Create New (centersoft key).
6. Namethenewgroup.Groupnamesmustbeeight charactersor lessandcannotcontainspaces.
•Usetheup anddownsides ofthe4-way arrowbuttontoscrollto theletteryou wanttouse.
•Usetherightside ofthe 4-wayarrowbuttonto addaletterto thename.
•Usetheleft sideof the4-wayarrow buttonto deletealetterfrom thename.
Note: Thecamera doesnotaccept groupnames thatbegin withBR orTL becausetheselettersare reserved,
regardlessoflanguage,foridentifyingBurstand Timelapsephotoson thememorycard.

7. Pressthe Exit button(rightsoftkey)twicetosave thesettingsandexitthe menus.
The name of the group appears in the photo information for all photos in the group. The
GroupedImagesiconappearsinthephotoinformationforanyphotothatrepresentsaclosed
group.
To dissolve a group:
Note: Dissolvinga groupremovesall thephotosfromthegroupand deletesthe groupname.Itdoesnot delete
thephotosfromthememorycard.Youcannotdissolve protected grouped photos.
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Rev.
2. Usethe4-wayarrowbuttonto scrolltoany photoincludedin thegroupyou wantto remove.
3. PresstheMenubutton.
4. Usethe4-way arrowbuttontoscrollto Group.
5. Pressthe Dissolve button(centersoft key).
6. PresstheExit button(rightsoft key).
To delete a group of photos:
Note: Deletinggroupedphotosdeletesallthephotosinthegroupfromthememorycard,butdoesnotdeletethe
groupname.Oncethephotosare deleted,youcannotrecoverthem.

4. Selectthe photothatrepresentsthegroupofphotos.
5. Pressthe Menu button.
TheEdit menudisplayswithDeletehighlighted.
6. PresstheDelete button(centersoftkey).
7. Pressthe Delete button(leftsoftkey)todeleteall ofthe photosin thegroup.Rememberthatonce photosare
deleted,you cannotrecoverthem.
Adding Photos to a Group
To add a photo to a group:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Rev.
2. Selecta photoormarkthe photosyouwantto addto thegroup.See“MarkingPhotos”on page70 formore
information.
3. PresstheMenubutton.
4. Usethe4-way arrowbuttontoscrollto Group.
5. Pressthe Add button(leftsoftkey).
Note: TheAdd buttonis availableonly whenthereareexistinggroups.See “Creating andRemovingGroups”
onpage76 fordetails.

7. Pressthe Select button(leftsoftkey).
8. Press the Exit button.
Thenameofthegroupappearsinthephotoinformationfor
allphotosinthe group.TheGrouped Images iconappears
inthephotoinformationforany photothatrepresentsa
closed group.
Opening andClosing Groups
Onceyouhave groupedsomephotosyoucan closethegroup
andviewjust theone photothatrepresents thegroup oryou canopen thegroup andviewall the photosinthe
group.
To open grouped photos:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Rev.
2. Usethe4-wayarrowbuttonto scrolltothe photothatrepresentsthe
groupyouwantto open.
Tip: Thephotorepresenting thegroupdisplaystheGroupedImages
iconinitsphotoinformation.
3. PresstheOpen button(rightsoftkey).
Thumbnailsofall ofthe photosinthegroupare displayedwithlinks

Expanding Burst andTimelapsePhotos
WhenyoutakeBurstor Timelapsephotos,the cameratakes aseriesof photosandusesthefirstphototo represent
theseries.Youcan expandthe seriestodisplayallthephotoson thecolorLCD,or youcanplaythe series.See
“ViewingBurst,Timelapse,andGroupedPhotos”on page86 forinformationaboutplayinga seriesofphotos.
To expand Burst or Timelapse photos:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Rev.
2. Usethe4-wayarrowbuttontoscrolltothephotothatrepresentstheBurstorTimelapseseries
you want to expand.
Tip: Thephotorepresenting theseriesdisplaystheBurstor Timelapse iconin itsphoto
information.
3. PresstheExpand button(rightsoft key).
Thumbnailsofall ofthe photosinthe series aredisplayedwithlinksbetweenthem.

To collapse Burst or Timelapse photos:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Rev.
2. Usethe4-wayarrowbuttonto scrolltoany photointhe BurstorTimelapseseriesyouwantto collapse.
3. PresstheCollapse button(rightsoftkey).
SearchingforPhotos
Youcan use the Find menuto searchforphotosby dateor bycategory.
To search for photos by date:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Rev.
2. Press the Menubutton.
3. Use the 4-way arrowbutton toscroll to the Find menu.
4. Pressthe Edit button(leftsoft key).
5. Entertherangeof datesyou wantthecamerato usetosearch for
photos:
•Usetherightand leftsidesof the4-wayarrowbuttonto moveto
themonth,day,andyear fields.
•Usetheupanddownsidesofthe4-wayarrowbuttontochangethe
month,day,andyear.

All button(centersoftkey) toresumeviewingallphotosstoredon thememorycard.
Note: If there are no photos within the range of dates you have selected, the color LCD displays the message No
images matched search criteria. Youcan:
•Pressthe Show All button(left softkey) toresumeviewingallphotosstoredon thememorycard.

•Pressthe Find button(rightsoftkey) toselectanewrange ofdates.

WhenyouusePlaymode,thecolorLCDautomaticallydisplaysyourphotosusingtheentirescreen.Photosinitially
appearat alow resolution,andthen thecolorLCD refreshes,fromthe top,to giveyoua clear,sharpviewof your
photo. Youcanviewinformationaboutphotosonthe overlaybarsifyou turnthemon. See“OverlayBars”on
page21 formore information.
Viewing Single Photos
To view a single photo:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto
Play.
2. Usethe4-wayarrowbuttonto scrollthroughyour
photos.
Tip: You can pressthe Overlaybuttonto turnoffthe overlay barandsee theentirescreen,or pressittwice
toturnon bothoverlaybars.

Zooming Inon Your Photos
Ifyouwant tosee aportionof yourphotoinmore detail,usethe Zoom button(centersoftkey). Whenyou are
zoomed in,you canuse the4-wayarrowbuttontosee differentparts ofthephoto.Youmust exitZoombefore
movingtoa differentphoto.
To zoom in and out:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Play.
2. Ifthe overlaybarsare off,press the Overlay button to turn them on.
3. Usetherightandleft sidesofthe 4-wayarrowbuttontoselectthe photoyouwantto view.
4. Zoominand out:
•Pressthe Zoom button(centersoft key)to zoomin.Youcanzoomin threetimes.
•Pressthe Zoom Out button(leftsoft key)to zoomout.Youcanzoom outfourtimes.
•Usethe4-way arrowbuttontosee differentpartsofthephoto.
Eachtimeyouzoom inor out,thecolor LCD refreshes,from thetop, to giveyou aclear,sharp viewofyour
photo.
5. Pressthe Exit button(rightsoftkey)tofinishzoomingandreturnthedisplayto theoriginalphotosize.

To play back photos:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Play.
2. Iftheoverlaybarsareoff,presstheOverlaybuttontoturnthemonso thatyoucanseethenamesoftheactive
soft keys.
3. Usethe4-wayarrowbuttonto scrolltothe Burst,Timelapse,or groupedphotosyouwant toplayback.

5. Pressthe Stop Slideshow button(leftsoftkey)tostopplayingback yourphotos.
To change the playback rate:
1. Turnthecameraonand turnthecameramodedialto Play.
2. Press the Menubutton.
