1 Setting Up the HP NetServer
Before You Set Up Your HP NetServer
Before you set up your HP NetServer LXr 8500:
•Read the Installation Road Map (Rack system specific). The Road Map
shows how to set up the entire rack system. It will alert you to issues you
must consider before installing the HP NetServer itself. The Roadmap
comes with the rack.
•Read this chapter. This chapter tells how to set up and configure the HP
NetServer. It tells you what to do, and in what order. For a trouble-free
installation, read this chapter before taking the HP NetServer out of its box.
Setup Steps
It is important to follow the setup steps in the exact order shown below. Skip any
steps that do not apply to you.
1. Unpack the contents of the shipping box.
CAUTION The HP NetServer LXr 8500 weighs approximately 155
pounds fully configured. At least two people are required to
lift the HP NetServer. Failure to observe this warning could
result in serious injury, or damage to the HP NetServer.
2. Verify the contents of the shipping box against the Contents List included
with your HP NetServer.
If anything is missing or damaged, call your reseller.
3. Store the empty boxes and packing material in a safe place.
This is especially important if you plan to ship the HP NetServer elsewhere
for final installation.
4. If you have optional items to add to the HP NetServer (memory, accessory
boards, or processor modules), remove the appropriate access panels from
the HP NetServer chassis.

5. Install additional processors.

6. Install additional memory.

7. Install PCI and PCI Hot Plug accessory boards.

8. Reconnect all internal cables and reattach all covers and access panels.
Refer to Chapter 3, "Opening and Closing the HP NetServer."
9. Install hard disk drives or tape drives.
Refer to Chapter 4, "Installing Mass Storage Devices."
10. Familiarize yourself with the HP NetServer’s controls, indicators, and
ports.
Refer to Chapter 2, "Controls, Indicators, and Ports."
11. Your next step depends on when and where you plan to complete the
installation process.
◊Do you plan to install the HP NetServer in a rack now?
∗If so, install the HP NetServer in the rack.
Refer to Chapter 8, "Rack Mounting the HP NetServer," or
Chapter 13, "Alternative Rack Mounting."
∗Connect the monitor, keyboard, and mouse cables to the HP
NetServer.
Refer to Chapter 9, "Connecting the Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse,
and UPS."
∗Connect mass storage devices or other components, including hot
swap hard drives.
Refer to Chapter 4, "Installing Mass Storage Devices."
◊Do you plan to complete the configuration at another location?
If so, put the HP NetServer back in the packing box, finish
repackaging, and ship the unit.
◊Do you plan to configure and test the HP NetServer and other
components together before mounting them in the rack?
∗If so, cable the monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the HP NetServer.

∗Also connect mass storage devices or other components, including
hot swap hard drives.

12. Obtain the release history of the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM
provided with the HP NetServer, to ensure you have the latest Navigator
CD-ROM.
Refer to Chapter 10, "Configuring the HP NetServer."
13. Power up the HP NetServer.
Refer to Chapter 2, "Controls, Indicators, and Ports."
14. Insert the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM and reboot the HP NetServer.
15. Check the Navigator README file for important installation information.
Refer to Chapter 10, "Configuring the HP NetServer."
16. Configure the HP NetServer with Configuration Assistant from the HP
NetServer Navigator CD-ROM, using the Express Configuration option.
Refer to Chapter 10, "Configuring the HP NetServer."
NOTE To fully configure the HP NetServer, all the rack components
should be cabled and online, but not necessarily installed in the
rack. Use the HP NetServer LXr 8500 Rack Assembly and
Cabling Reference Guide for more details.
17. If you plan to ship a fully-configured rack system to a different destination,
label each cable and component.
a. Remove all components from the rack, including external mass
storage devices.
b. Repack the components in the original packing material, and label
them for shipment.
CAUTION It is critical to disassemble and re-box all electronic
components before re-shipment. Electronic components
(especially hard disk drives) can sustain damage when shipped
in rack enclosures.

Front Panel Controls and Indicators
This chapter describes the controls, indicators, and ports on the front and rear of
the HP NetServer LXr 8500, including the controls and indicators concealed
behind the front bezel.
Control Panel Buttons and Indicators
The HP NetServer’s control panel includes the following controls and indicators.
•Front panel controls for power, reset, and Secure Mode
•LEDs for power and Secure Mode
•Three status LEDs -- one red, one yellow, one green -- to provide quick
information about HP NetServer status.
•A two-line LCD display with its own set of window navigation buttons.
This display provides detailed information about HP NetServer status.
The following illustration shows the HP NetServer’s front bezel, including its
control panel. The following sections explain these controls in more detail.

The Power, Reset, and Secure Mode buttons are on the left side of the control
panel. See Table 2-1 for a description of these buttons and LEDs.

NOTE A small protective cover is provided on the HP NetServer’s
control panel to cover the Power and Reset buttons.This cover
can prevent someone from accidentally powering down or
resetting the HP NetServer during normal operation. It can also
be easily opened for access to the Power and Reset buttons.

Control Description
Power On/Off/
Sleep Button This button turns the HP NetServer power On or Off, and if
available, also transitions the HP NetServer between Power
On, various sleep states, and Power Off.
If sleep states are not available, then this button only turns
power On or Off.
The sleep states are NOS dependent and not available if your
NOS does not support power management based on the ACPI
standard. A NOS supporting ACPI allows this button to be
configured through a user interface. Refer to "Applying
Power to the HP NetServer and Sleep States (ACPI)" later in
this chapter.
Power On/Off/
Sleep LED
This LED glows a steady green when power is On, and dark,
when the HP NetServer is powered Off.
If the HP NetServer is under ACPI control, this LED will
flash between green and dark (off), when in an ACPI sleep
state.
Reset Button This button performs a system reset (hard reset or cold boot).
Secure Mode
Button Puts the HP NetServer in the Secure Mode, if it is configured
in the Setup Utility(BIOS) for the Secure Mode feature.
Secure mode can include such restrictions as keyboard lock,
power button lock, and window blanking. The reset button
and scroll keys will also be disabled.
Refer to Chapter 10, "Configuring the HP NetServer," to
configure the NetServer’s Setup Utility for Secure Mode.
Secure Mode
LED
This LED glows a steady green when the HP NetServer is in
Secure Mode, and is dark (off) at all other times.

Control Panel LCD Window and Navigation Buttons
The control panel features a two-line LCD window to display POST messages,
boot messages, and errors. You can also use this window to display the HP
NetServer’s configuration information, a log of current and past error conditions,
replaceable parts information, and more.
Figure 2-3 shows the LCD display and its navigation buttons. For instructions on
using this LCD display, see Viewing Information on the Control Panel Display
later in this chapter.

NOTE The LCD display can present a custom defined text string used
to identify the HP NetServer, instead of the default HP
NetServer LXr 8500. Use the Setup Utility (BIOS) to create
the custom text string.

HP NetServer Status LEDs
Three LEDs -- one red, one green, one yellow -- are grouped on the right side of
the control panel. The three HP NetServer status LEDs give you a quick idea of
the HP NetServer’s general health. The signals provided reflect the most critical
pending event in the HP NetServer.
Figure 2-4 shows the HP NetServer status LEDs, and Table 2-2 describes how to
interpret each one.

Red
LED Yellow LED Green LED Indicates HP NetServer Status:
Off Off Off Main power is off and the HP NetServer may
or may not be on standby power.
Flashing Off Off Immediate attention required due to a failed
component in the HP NetServer. The HP
NetServer may not be fully operational, due to
this condition, such as POST errors.
Off Flashing Off Attention required due to a pre-failure
condition. This condition may be caused by a
component failure (for example, a redundant
fan or power supply) that could lead to a
critical component failure, such as a processor
module exceeding its operating temperature.
If the failed component is redundant, the HP
NetServer may still be operating normally.
Off Off On The HP NetServer is operating normally.

Rear Panel Indicators and Ports
The HP NetServer’s rear panel includes communication ports, the AC power inlet,
and the HP NetServer’s three power supplies. The following sections describe the
power supply indicators, communication ports, and PCI LEDs in more detail.
All PCI slots have corresponding LED indicators located just above the PCI
hold-down latch. The LEDs are used to indicate the status of each slot and are also
visible from the inside the HP NetServer.
Figure 2-5 shows the rear of the HP NetServer.

Power Supply Module Indicators
Each of the HP NetServer power supply modules has the indicators shown in
Figure 2-6 and Table 2-3 provides the descriptions.

Control Description
PWR
(Power) Glows steady green when HP NetServer is powered up. If the
server is not powered up but is connected to AC power (so
that standby voltage is available), the LED blinks green. If
there is no AC power, the LED is dark.
PRFL
(Predictive Fail) Blinks yellow if the speed of the power supply’s internal fan
falls below acceptable levels. Power supply has not failed,
but may do so soon.
FAIL
(Power Supply
Failure)
Glows steady yellow when power supply fails. Blinks yellow
when power supply is drawing more current than it should,
because of a short circuit in the power supply or elsewhere in
the HP NetServer. If the short-circuit is in the power supply,
the power supply shuts down. If the short-circuit is in the HP
NetServer, the HP NetServer shuts down.
NOTE Once lit, the PRFL (Predictive Fail) LED will continue to blink
yellow even if the fan speed problem was intermittent and the
fan’s speed has regained acceptable levels.

CAUTION If you remove a power supply, it is imperative to wait at least
15 seconds before reinserting it. The delay gives the power
supply’s inrush protection circuit time to reset itself. If the
circuit does not have time to reset, the supply draws a larger
than normal inrush current and may trip main circuit breakers
or UPS breakers.

NOTE The keyboard and mouse ports are interchangeable and at boot
time the I/O Riser board automatically detects which device is
connected to the port. The I/O Riser board, located on the I/O
baseboard behind the rear panel connectors, contains the
electronic circuitry to support all of its connections.
