1 Introduction
Your New Server
When you use this kit to upgrade your HP NetServer LH 3000/3000r to an
LH 6000/6000r, you end up with a new server. It retains the original serial and
model numbers, but your upgraded server has many new capabilities.
Reinstalling your network operating system (NOS) is an essential part of this
upgrade. Reinstalling the NOS ensures that you can use all of the new features of
the NetServer LH 6000/6000r.
NOTE Whenever you call for service on your upgraded NetServer, be
sure to identify your NetServer as an LH 3000/3000r with its
original serial number. Then, you must always tell the service
representative that it has been upgraded to an LH 6000/6000r.
Be sure to identify your NetServer as having been upgraded to
an LH 6000/6000r before a service representative comes to
your site.
Because this upgrade provides the equivalent of a new server, be sure you follow
the instructions in this chapter to verify NOS versions and determine which
accessories you need before you begin to disassemble your NetServer
LH 3000/3000r.
Verify NOS Versions Supported by the
LH 6000/6000r
Verify which versions of your NOS are supported for the HP NetServer
LH 6000/6000r. For a complete list of NOS versions supported for the
HP NetServer LH 6000/6000r, see the HP web site:

Accessory Contents
CAUTION Components of this accessory kit are sensitive to static
electricity and can be easily damaged by improper handling.
Read the following information carefully before you handle
the accessory components:
•Leave the components in the anti-static container until you
are ready to install them.
•Use an anti-static wrist strap and a grounding mat. Read
and follow the instructions included with the wrist strap
and mat.
•Before you remove a component from its anti-static
container, touch a grounded, unpainted metal surface on
the NetServer to discharge static electricity.
As you unpack the shipping box, verify that you received the following items:
l new system board with four terminators and two voltage regulator modules
(VRMs) installed
l two Intel Pentium IIITM XeonTM processor modules
l two 128-MB DIMMs
l bag of four thumbscrews
l three nameplates for the following pedestal and rack configurations:
◊the HP NetServer LH 6000 (pedestal version) uses the short nameplate
◊the HP NetServer LH 6000r (for HP rack systems) uses the long, thick
nameplate
◊the HP NetServer LH 6000r (for non-HP rack systems) uses the long,
thin nameplate
l label kit with the following labels:
◊"Intel inside PIII Xeon" label to be applied to the lower-right corner of
the bezel
◊"UPGRADED TO LH 6000/6000r" label to be applied to the back of
the chassis by the serial number label
l HP NetServer LH 3000/3000r to LH 6000/6000r Upgrade Guide (this
guide)

Determine Which Accessories You Need
Use the guidelines described in this section when purchasing additional
accessories for your new HP NetServer LH 6000/6000r.
Power Supply Upgrade Kit
You must order a Power Supply Upgrade Kit, product number D8551A, for the
HP NetServer LH 3000/3000r and LH 6000/6000r.
WARNING Do not proceed with this upgrade without first purchasing the
appropriate Power Supply Upgrade Kit. The HP NetServer
LH 6000/6000r cannot operate without a minimum of three
power supplies.
Memory
The upgrade kit comes with two 128-MB DIMMs. You can use 128-MB,
256-MB, 512-MB, and 1-GB SDRAM DIMMs. Note the following installation
guidelines before adding memory:
l DIMMs are installed in pairs on the system board.
l Each pair of DIMMs must be of the same size.
l You can remove DIMMs from the HP NetServer LH 3000/3000r and
install them in the new system board for the LH 6000/6000r as long as you
install them in pairs of the same capacity and type.
l Although the two DIMMs in each pair must have the same capacity, pairs
with different capacities can be mixed on the system board. For example,
you can install a pair of 1-GB DIMMs, a pair of 128-MB DIMMs, and so
on.
l DIMMs that differ in type cannot be mixed.
l The maximum amount of memory for the NetServer LH 6000/6000r is
8 GB.

NOTE Consult your network operating system (NOS) documentation
to determine the maximum amount of memory supported by
your NOS.
Processors
The upgrade kit comes with two processors and four terminators. You can
purchase additional processors for a total of six processors
CAUTION You cannot move processors from the LH 3000/3000r to the
LH 6000/6000r.
When the HP NetServer LH 6000/6000r is configured with
multiple processors, all the processors must have the same
frequency, stepping, and cache size. For example, do not mix
550-MHz processors that have different-sized caches.
Returning LH 3000 Components to HP
During the upgrade process, some NetServer LH 3000/3000r components are
removed and replaced by LH 6000/6000r components. You can return all removed
to parts to Hewlett-Packard for recycling.
Purpose of This Guide
This guide describes the steps you need to perform to convert the HP NetServer
LH 3000/3000r to the HP NetServer LH 6000/6000r. This guide includes the
following topics:
•Chapter 1, "Introduction," lists the upgrade kit contents, explains what
accessories you might need before you begin the upgrade, and identifies
related documentation you might need.
•Chapter 2, "Preparing for the Upgrade," identifies the necessary tools,
instructs you to back up your data, and describes how to check the system
event log.
•Chapter 3, "Removing Components from LH 3000," explains how to
remove the system board, chassis guides, and air baffles.

Precautions
Follow the procedures listed below to ensure safe handling of components and to
prevent harm to yourself and the NetServer.
CAUTION Operating the NetServer without all covers in place reduces
critical cooling airflow over some components, such as hard
disk drives and processor modules. Continuous operation of
the NetServer without all covers in place will increase
temperatures and may reduce the reliability of some
components.
Wear a wrist strap and use a static-dissipating work surface
connected to the chassis at all times to prevent possible static
electricity damage to the NetServer components.

2 Preparing for the Upgrade
This chapter explains the steps to take before you begin the upgrade:
l Gather the tools you need.
l Back up your data.
l Save your current configuration settings.
l Check the internal event log.
Tools You Need
To install this accessory you need an anti-static service kit (3M8501/8502/8503
or equivalent). This kit includes a static-dissipating work surface, a chassis clip
lead, and a wrist strap.
If you need to remove the NetServer from a rack, you will also need some
additional tools. Refer to the HP NetServer LH 3000/3000r Installation Guide and
your rack documentation for further details.
Back Up Your Data
Before you start the upgrade, you must back up all hard disk drives and verify that
the backup can be restored.
Save the Current Configuration Settings
Before you start the upgrade, follow these instructions to preserve the current
configuration settings.
1. Close all applications, log off all users, and shut down the network
operating system.
2. Write down all system configuration details from the Setup utility:
a. Restart your NetServer and watch for the message:
Press <F2> to enter SETUP

b. Copy down all settings from the Configuration and Security menus that
you might have changed from their default values. Be sure to write
down the settings under these selections:
∗Embedded LAN and SCSI Settings
∗Boot Settings
See your NetServer’s Installation Guide for more information about the
Setup utility.
3. If you are using integrated HP NetRAID, start the HP NetRAID Express
Tools utility and write down all configuration details for integrated HP
NetRAID as follows:
a. Restart your NetServer and watch for the flashing message:
Option: Experienced users may press
<Ctrl> <m> for HP NetRAID Express Tools
now.
Firmware Initializing
b. Press <Ctrl> <M> or <Ctrl> <m> to start HP NetRAID Express
Tools.
c. From the Tools Management menu, choose Enable/Disable BIOS and
write down the setting.
d. Select the Objects menu, then choose Adapter.
e. If you are using the integrated HP NetRAID, and don’t have any
additional HP NetRAID adapters, write down all the adapter settings.
If you are using multiple HP NetRAID adapters, select your adapters
one at a time, and look for "Integrated HP NetRAID Controller" in the
Type field. When you have selected the integrated NetRAID adapter,
write down all the adapter settings.
f. From the Objects menu, select Logical Drives then Properties. Write
down all logical drive settings.
g. From the Objects menu, select SCSI Channel and write down settings
for each channel.
h. Exit HP NetRAID Express Tools.
4. If you are using the Integrated Remote Assistant features, run the
Integrated Remote Assistant. Record all configuration settings.

Check the System Event Log
Be sure to check the system event log before you remove components from the
LH 3000/3000r.
NOTE This is not the Windows NT®Event Log.
1. Find the new HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM shipped with this upgrade
kit and insert it.
2. Turn on power to the NetServer.
3. From the Navigator Main Menu, select NetServer Utilities then More
NetServer Utilities.
4. View the Event Log Report Utility from the More NetServer Utilities
option. If there are problems with the system, troubleshoot these before
continuing with the upgrade. You might want to save the Event Log file
before you proceed. Refer to the HP NetServer LH 3000/3000r Installation
Guide and the HP NetServer Online Documentation CD-ROM.
5. Exit from the Navigator and shut down the NetServer.

3 Removing Components from the
LH 3000/3000r
Removing components from the HP NetServer LH 3000/3000r has these steps:
l Power off the NetServer.
l Remove covers and system board.
l Remove chassis guide and air baffles.
WARNING Do not proceed with this upgrade without first purchasing the
appropriate Power Supply Upgrade Kit. The HP NetServer
LH 6000/6000r cannot operate without a minimum of three
power supplies.
Power off the NetServer
If you have not done so already, power off the NetServer as follows:
1. Close all applications, log off all users, and gracefully shut down the
network operating system according to directions in your NOS
documentation.
2. Press the power switch on the HP NetServer’s control panel when
prompted by the operating system.
3. Disconnect all power and telephone cords.
WARNING Power supplies will continue to provide standby current to the
NetServer until the power cords are disconnected.

Remove Covers and the System Board
CAUTION Wear a wrist-strap and use a static-dissipating work surface
connected to the chassis when handling components. Ensure
the metal of the wrist strap contacts your skin.
1. Remove covers as follows. See the Installation Guide for your NetServer
for more complete information.
a. If your NetServer is in the pedestal orientation (LH 3000), follow these
steps:
1. Unlock and remove the front bezel.
2. Remove the top cover and the right cover.
b. If your NetServer is in the rack-mounted orientation (LH 3000r), follow
these steps:
1. Extend the rack’s anti-tip foot.
2. Unlock and remove the front bezel if necessary.
3. Remove the four screws that secure the front of the NetServer to the
rack.
4. From the front of the rack, pull the NetServer forward to extend it
on the rack rails. You will hear the locking device engage with a
click.
5. Remove both the right cover and the bottom cover.
2. Open the blue retaining latches to release the system board, and remove the
board from the chassis. See Figures 3-1 and 3-2.
3. Place the system board on an anti-static mat.
You will not use this system board in the NetServer LH 6000/6000r.

Remove Chassis Guide and Air Baffles
1. Remove the thumbscrew holding the chassis guide in place as shown in
Figures 3-3 (pedestal version) and 3-4 (rack-mounted version).
NOTE You can use a T15 TorxTM driver to help remove this screw if
necessary.
