Using the HP DHCP Settings Update Client
2
Abstra t This paper provides instru tions for using HP DHCP Settings Update Client.
Introdu tion The HP DHCP Settings Update Client is a utility that allows an IT Administrator to apply
settings to an HP XP Embedded operating system. The settings are applied through an
.INI file that uses a subset of parameters from Mi rosoft's sysprep.inf as well as several
XPe/HP-spe ifi keys. XPePrep an run by spe ifying a lo al .INI file to be pro essed, or
it an be used in onjun tion with DHCP and FTP servers to automati ally apply settings
a ross multiple lients on a network.
Server
Requirements
The following se tions provide a list of requirements for the DHCP Server and the FTP
Server.
DHCP Server
Requirements
! Option 171 should ontain a string value spe ifying an FTP server name. This
an also be an IP address, but must still be spe ified as a string (for example,
123.12.34.255).
! Option 172 should ontain a String value spe ifying the path and filename for
the input answer file. This should be in the format of folder/filename.ini. If
the file is lo ated on the top dire tory, then only the filename is required.
For example, if the answer file were stored in ftp://myserver/myfolder/xpeprep.ini,
then DCHP option 171 should ontain the string myserver and DHCP option 172
should ontain the string myfolder/xpeprep.ini.
If one of these values is hanged on the DHCP server after lients have been updated,
any lients needing the new strings will either need to be rebooted or have the Mi rosoft
DHCP Client Servi e restarted. This is be ause DCHP options are a hed lo ally on the
lient to in rease performan e. However, this also prevents the lient from seeing
hanges made on the server. Rebooting the lient will ause the a he to be refreshed to
ontain the new values. Restarting the DHCP servi e will lear the a he so that requests
will go to the server instead of the a he.
FTP Server
Requirements
The FTP server must have a folder spe ified by DHCP option 172 that allows anonymous
read a ess or the server should have anonymous read a ess to the default folder (if no
folder is spe ified). Client input files should be pla ed in this folder.

Pro ess Flow
Diagram
The following diagram illustrates the pro ess flow:
Understanding the
Pro ess Flow
The following steps explain the pro ess shown in the above flow hart:
1. The system boots and laun hes the lient from the Run key in the lo al ma hine
registry or the user laun hes the lient from ommand line, or by running Update
Now from the lient’s Control Panel applet.
Using the HP DHCP Settings Update Client
4
2. The lient he ks if a file was spe ified in the ommand line (e.g.,
xpeprep\test.ini). If the file is found, the lient will he k the SettingsVersion
value and then pro ess the file if needed. The following steps are performed:
a. Delete the input file.
b. Pro ess the CommitEW option.
. The lient exits using the spe ified shutdown option.
3. The lient looks for c:\xpeprep.ini. If the file is found, the lient will he k the
SettingsVersion value and then pro ess the file if needed. The following steps are
performed:
a. Delete c:\xpeprep.ini.
b. Pro ess the CommitEW option.
. The lient exits using the spe ified shutdown option.
4. If the file is not found, the lient he ks the DHCP settings. If DHCP is enabled and
the DHCP server an be rea hed, the lient will loop. It will try to onta t the DHCP
server for the FTP server and file path options based on the number of retries
spe ified. On e the DHCP server has responded with the server and path names, the
user will get the file from the FTP server and store it lo ally as c:\xpeprep.ini. The
lient will he k the SettingsVersion value, and then pro ess the file, if needed.
The following steps are performed:
a. Delete c:\xpeprep.ini.
b. Pro ess the CommitEW option.
. The lient exits using the spe ified shutdown option.
If all other steps have failed, the lient exists.
Version
Che king
The lient must maintain user and system-level settings versions. This level of revision
ontrol is ne essary be ause all settings are applied to all users ex ept for Internet proxy
settings. If a version of the settings has been applied to the system, ea h new user will
also pro ess the same file (if DHCP-based) and apply the proxy settings (if any). If no
user-level pro essing is required (in other words, no [Internet] se tion), then EWF will
not be ommitted and the shutdown option will not be pro essed.

Options
The HP DHCP Settings Update Client an also be onfigured and/or run from the

! Administrative mode: Administrative mode an only be a essed from the
Administrator a ount and allows onfiguration.
! Manual updates: All other users an request a manual update (if available)
using this applet.
To sele t the mode of operation, go to Control Panel and sele t Switch to Classic

Best Pra ti es HP re ommends the following best pra ti es when onfiguring the HP DHCP Settings
Update Client.
Best Pra ti e Explanation
If you apply a omputer name hange,
the Shutdown option in XpePrep
should equal Shutdown or Reboot,
and the CommitEW option should be
set to Yes.
Changing the omputer name requires a
reboot in order to take effe t. If you
apply a omputer name hange and do
not ommit the hange to the EWF
prote ted volume, the name hange will
be lost during the reboot.
If you sele t Yes for CommitEW , the
Shutdown option should be set to
Reboot or Shutdown.
Data in the EWF overlay is not ommitted
to the prote ted volume until the system
shuts down. Any hanges made to the
system after the HP DHCP Settings
Update Client runs (and ommits the EWF
overlay) will be saved.
If you sele t No for CommitEW , then
you should not set the Shutdown option
to Reboot or Shutdown. The
re ommended setting is None.
If the EWF Overlay is not ommitted to
the prote ted volume, then the lient will
not preserve the SettingsVersion. This
will ause the lient to pro ess the
settings and apply the Shutdown option
every time a user logs in. This would put
the system in an endless loop of booting,
logging-in, and rebooting.
If you do not spe ify a
SettingsVersion, or the
SettingsVersion is set to 0, then you
should not set the Shutdown option to
Reboot or Shutdown. The
re ommended setting is None.
Not spe ifying the SettingsVersion, or
setting it equal to 0 will ause the lient
to always apply the settings and pro ess
the Shutdown option. This would put the
system in an endless loop of booting,
logging-in, and rebooting.
If you hange the password on the
Administrator a ount, then the omputer
name hanges will only be applied
when users with administrative privileges
logon to the ma hine.
Changing the omputer name requires
administrative a ess. The lient
depends on impersonating the
Administrator a ount in order to apply
omputer name hanges when running
as a “Guest” user. For se urity reasons,
a method of ommuni ating a password
hange to the lient has not been
established.
In order to pro ess the CommitEW or
Shutdown options, other settings must be
spe ified.
These options will not be pro essed
unless other settings have been
spe ified. This is done to ensure that
there are no unne essary reboots or
writes to the flash storage media.

Command Line
Syntax
For lo al file-based pro essing, use the following ommand line syntax:
C:\Windows\XPePrep.exe <path to .ini file>
For example: C:\Windows\XPePrep.exe c:\xpeprep.ini.
You must spe ify the full path to the .INI
.INI.INI
.INI file. This ommand line annot be a relative
path.
For DHCP FTP-based pro essing, use the following ommand line syntax:
C:\Windows\XPePrep.exe
Input File
Parameters
The following tables list input file parameters for [Display], [GUIUnattended],
[Userdata], [Internet], and [XpePrep].
