HP ACU-CLI Overview
The HP Array Configuration Utility Command Line Interface (HP ACU-CLI) is a
command-line-based disk configuration tool that can be used to configure and manage Smart
Array Controllers and RAID Array Controllers in Integrity Linux environments.
HP ACU-CLI is available as a part of the HP Insight Foundation Suite for Integrity with Linux
and can be obtained from the Linux on HP Integrity Servers web site:

This document provides information about the of HP Array Configuration Utility Command
Line Interface (HP ACU-CLI) version 8.40 release.
Supported Configurations
HP ACU-CLI provides support for a number of configurations. See the Linux section of the HP
9000 and HP Integrity Server-Storage Support Matrices web site for the latest information about
supported configurations:

Installation and Usage Instructions
Installing HP ACU-CLI:
HP ACU-CLI is distributed using Red Hat Package Manager (RPM) packages.
1. If there is an older version of HP ACU-CLI installed on the system, you must use rpm -e
hpacucli to remove it first.
2. To install the HP ACU-CLI application, enter:
rpm -i <filename>
TIP: For additional details regarding RPM, use the man rpm command.
The software resides in /opt/compaq/hpacucli and the executable name is hpacucli which
is located in /usr/sbin.
Using HP ACU-CLI:
You must run hpacucli as root.
1. Ensure that /usr/sbin is root's path.
2. To start the HP ACU-CLI application, enter:
hpacucli
TIP: For more options, use the hpacucli help command.
Exiting the HP ACU-CLI:
To exit the HP ACU-CLI, at the CLI command console, enter:
exit
Important Usage Notes
• The CCISS and CPQARRAY drivers support up to 16 logical drives per controller. After
creating or deleting logical drives with HP ACU-CLI, under some special circumstances,

the device name mapping might change after you first reboot the system. Also, after
rebooting, Linux might see logical drives that were previously not visible. This name mapping
problem is common to all SCSI devices on Linux.
• Do not insert or remove a controller driver module when hpacucli is running.
• Stop the HP Storage Agents when deleting logical drives since HP Storage Agents keep all
logical drives open.
• If all physical drives on a controller fail or are removed, software keys will not be saved to
the controller.
• HP ACU-CLI may appear unresponsive during heavy array controller I/O conditions, such
as during a partition format or a logical drive rebuild.
• HP ACU-CLI will not disallow the deletion of logical drives on fibre channel controllers
that have mounted partitions.
System Requirements and Dependencies
HP ACU-CLI requires HP Management Base (hpmgmtbase) to be installed on the system. HP
Management Base is a package of tools, scripts, and binaries that ensure proper system
manageability functionality by providing access to the management processor through the Open
IPMI driver.
HP management base packages are distribution-specific and are found in the HP Insight
Foundation Suite for Integrity with Linux product. Download this product from the Open Source
and Linux from HP website:

HP recommends using the most updated versions of HP supported device drivers for the Smart
Array controllers and Fibre Channel host bus adapters.
Known Issues
This section contains known issues with the HP ACU-CLI product, which undergoes rigorous
testing before each release. From HP test activities to date, the following items have been
uncovered that you should keep in mind.
•Error "[Not FC Transport, discarding (2)]" appears on the sles10sp3/emulex
card.
When launching hpacucli, this error pops up, either hp-fc-enablement lib 1.2-1
or 1.2-2
Workaround: None at this time. This error will not affect functionality.
•SSP presented information is lost after SSP state toggles.
SSP-related information such as unmask or mask is lost after SSP state is changed from off
to on state.
Workaround: None at this time.
•HP ACU-CLI compatibility issue with RHEL5U1.
On HP Integrity servers running RHEL5U1, HP ACU-CLI causes kernel panics when issuing
various hpacucli operations on a SmartArray controller configured with more than one
logical drive. For example, issuing either the show config or ctrl all show status
commands result in a kernel panic. Multiple installed SmartArray controllers, each with a
single logical drive, are not affected. This issue is specific to the RHEL5U1 release and does
not occur with RHEL5.

NOTE: To avoid creating this adverse condition, the HP Integrity Essentials Foundation
Pack for Linux installer will not install the HP ACU-CLI (hpacucli) product on these
servers and this option is not displayed in the product installation menu. Further, if
hpacucli is detected on the system, it is uninstalled by the installer.
Workaround: If multiple logical drives are required on a given SmartArray controller, use
the ORCA utility at the EFI shell to configure them. Do not use hpacucli to configure these
storage devices. Alternatively, you can upgrade the OS to RHEL5U2.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN FOR THE RHEL5U2 RELEASE.
•On a CoreIO P400 with an OS installed on it, the deleting array operation acts abnormally.
On HP Integrity servers, the operation to delete an array should be successful with or without
an OS installed. However, when the delete array operation is performed for an array on
CoreIO P400 controllers, the operation fails and the following error message is displayed
"Error: Could not delete array *".
Workaround: Deleting an array on CoreIO P600 controllers with an OS installed on operates
as expected.
•hpacuscripting return code is not "0".
On HP Integrity servers running RHEL5.4, RHEL4.8, SLES10SP3, or SLES11SP1, run the
command "$hpacuscripting -i acuinput.ini -internal" on SmartArray
controllers or run "$hpacuscripting -i acuinput.ini -external" on FibreChannel
controllers to write configuration to the hardware, the return code is not "0", but "11". An
"error.ini" file will not be created.
Workaround: This error does not affect functionality.
•hpacucli acts abnormal on rhel5.4Xen with Qlogic card and MSA1000/1500 storage.
On RHEL5.4xen, with hpacucli8.40+hp-fc-enablement-1.1-13 installed, use
hpacucli for show, create, or delete operations on MSA1000/1500 connected to
AB379A/AB379B (Qlogic card).
Workaround: On RHEL5.4, the hpacucli show/create/delete functions act normally.
Problems Resolved
The following issues have been resolved in previous releases of the HP ACU-CLI.
•HP ACUCLI 8.25 installation encounter dependence issue on SLES10 and SLES11.
Installing ACUCLI8.25 on SLES10 and SLES11 will issue a "compat libstdc:: 296"
dependence issue.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN THE 8.28 RELEASE.
Workaround: For a SLES10 installation, skip the dependency check before the ACUCLI 8.25
installation. Use the command rpm -ivh hpacucli-8.25-5.ia64.rpm nodeps.
Workaround: For a SLES11 installation, install the file compat 2008.10.27
1.9.ia64.rpm before the ACUCLI 8.25 installation. Next, execute the command rpm
-ivh hpacucli 8.25-5.ia64.rpm nodeps. The file
compat-2008.10.27-1.9.ia64.rpm is included in the HPIEFPL 2.5 CD.
•Migration of logical volume using an unsupported stripe size does not work.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN THE 8.28 RELEASE.
Attempts to migrate the stripe size of a logical volume to unsupported sizes results in no
error message.
Workaround: You should only migrate existing striping to supported sizes.

•Using HP ACU-CLI on HP Integrity cellular servers is slow.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN THE 8.28 RELEASE.
Using HP ACU-CLI on HP Integrity cellular servers (for example, an rx8640 server is
cell-based) is extremely slow. Operations within hpacucli, such as “ctrl all show”
status can take several minutes to finish. This issue does not occur on non-cellular HP
Integrity servers.
Workaround: Ensure that you allow an adequate amount of time, commensurate with the
storage size of your server, for the operation to complete. Do not attempt to execute additional
commands until the hpacucli operation has finished.
•Rebuild issue when Smart Array 6402 controller is installed in an rx4640 connected to
internal volumes.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN THE 7.65 RELEASE.
ACU-CLI should perform a rescan of the SCSI bus as a result of running "rescan" or "pd
show all" commands. This in turn should initiate a rebuild of an array after replacement
of a failed drive. The rebuild does not take place as a result of running these commands with
the released version.
Workaround: You can initiate a rescan by exiting and then rerunning HP ACU-CLI, or by
rebooting the system.
•CCISS interface/driver reports inaccurate information on logical volumes.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN THE 7.65 RELEASE.
Under some circumstances, the CCISS driver can show devices that have not actually been
created. When this happens, a number of different devices are reported to the OS, but there
is actually only one logical volume.
Workaround: You should reboot the system after creating a new logical volume.
•Using HP ACU-CLI from two clients at the same time results in warning messages upon
exiting from one of the clients.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN THE 7.65 RELEASE.
Workaround: Use only one instance of HP ACU-CLI at a time.
•Unexpected LED behavior under some circumstances.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN THE 7.65 RELEASE.
All LEDs will go “off” if the customer performs the following steps:
ACUCLI> modify led=on
ACUCLI> pd xxx modify led=off
Workaround: There is no workaround.
•Logical volume status abnormal after powering down OS on some cell-based systems.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN THE 7.65 RELEASE.
After a cell-based system is powered off using the Linux command “poweroff” or “halt”,
the status of logical volumes that have been previously created may show as FAILED. Also
you may be unable to delete the logical volume in question.
Workaround:You must use the management processor to power off the HW partition, then
power on again.
•Logical volume created on rx2620 does not appear on rx7620.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN THE 7.65 RELEASE.
In some circumstances, logical volumes created on one system do not appear on another
system, even after a system reset.

Workaround: You must totally power off the HW partition and then power on in order to
see the logical volume.
•Cannot query the logical volume size using the “create” command.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN THE 7.65 RELEASE.
The logical volume size cannot be successfully queried using the “create” command.
Workaround: None at this time.
•OS fails to recognize configuration changes.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN THE 7.65 RELEASE.
When existing volumes are modified or deleted, or when new volumes are created using
HP ACU-CLI, the operating system will not always be aware of the changes unless the
system is rebooted.
Workaround: You must reboot the system after making changes to existing volumes.
•ACU-CLI cannot delete the last logical disk.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN hpacucli8.40+hp-fc-enablement-1.1-13.
ACU-CLI cannot delete the last logical disk that connects to the Qlogic Fibre Channel card.
This issue only happens on RHEL5.3, SLES11, RHEL5.4 and SLES10SP3.
Workaround: The last disk can be deleted on RHEL4 and SLES10SP2
•Mount point displays as "None" after mounting the LD into the OS.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN hpacucli8.40+hp-fc-enablement-1.1-13.
After mounting your logical drive into the operating system and executing the command
"ld <your id number> show", the system displays the message [None] as the status for
the mount points.
Workaround: Execute the command mount from the command line to display the correct
mount points for your LD.
•hpacucli acts abnormal with the qlogic card and the hp-fc-enablement rpm.
THIS ISSUE WAS FIXED IN hpacucli8.40+hp-fc-enablement-1.1-13.
hpacucli fails to delete the last array due to an issue with the qlogic driver and
hp-fc-enablement lib. This issue occurs on RHEL5.3, RHEL5.4, SLES10SP3, and SLES11.
Workaround: This issue fix requires both the qlogic driver and the hp-fc-enablement
lib fix. The target operating systems for the qlogic driver fix are RHEL5.5 and SLES10SP3.
The lib fix issue will be fixed with version 1.1-9. For the RHEL5.4 and SLES10SP3 operating
systems the fix version will be 1.2-1+.
