Overview
HP Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Multimedia and USB Enhancements software provides multimedia
and USB device redirection to reduce the limitations sometimes associated with Microsoft Remote
Desktop Protocol and the VMware View 3 (or VDI) desktop experience.
Enhanced Multimedia Experience on an RDP Connection
Available for HP Thin Clients running the Microsoft® Windows® XP Embedded or Windows®
Embedded Standard operating system, HP RDP Enhancements improves audio and video
performance over RDP connections.
Extends USB Connectivity
Enjoy access to USB-connected devices such as drive keys, local printers, and scanners by redirecting
USB communication between the thin client and the remote desktop session.

HP Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Multimedia and USB Enhancements software is preinstalled on
selected models or available as a downloadable add-on. The thin client must have Microsoft®
Windows® XP Embedded with SP3 (image version 5.1.606 or higher) or Windows® Embedded
Standard operating system provided by HP to use this software.

Installation
Client side
1. Go to www.hp.com. From Customer Support, select Software & Driver Downloads.
2. Select See support and troubleshooting information for product: and type the model number of
your thin client into the text box.
3. Press the Enter key or click >> to continue.
4. Locate and download HP XPe Add-On (HP RDP Multimedia and USB Enhancement Software [Client Side]).
Follow the instructions in the text file that accompanies the Softpaq to unbundle the compressed
files.
5. Locate the Add_HP_RDP_MMR_USB_Enhancements_1.00_A1.exe file. Copy it to a USB drive key,
then execute it on the thin client.
NOTE:
This add-on requires uncompressed free space on the flash memory (Drive C:)
and uncompressed free space in the temporary folder. These space
requirements must be met in order to successfully deploy this add-on.
1) Space required on the flash memory for installation : 2.0 MB
2) Space required on the flash memory after installation : 1.4 MB (with NTFS
Compression)
3) Space required in the temporary folder for installation : 1.6 MB
To ensure that the temporary folder always has the required amount of free
space for installation, HP recommends that the %TEMP% and %TMP%
variables be temporarily re-defined to a network share on the deployment
server, and that the setup program be executed from the deployment server.
Otherwise, the add-on may fail to deploy correctly.

6. After executing the program, the write filter must commit the changes to the flash memory. This
can be done by executing the following command from the command line:
C:\windows\system32\ewfmgr.exe c: -commit
NOTE:
To successfully deploy this component to the client using HP Device Manager
or Altiris, you will need to complete the following steps:
1) Execute Add_HP_RDP_MMR_USB_Enhancements_1.00_A1.exe using the
"-s" switch. If this program is not executed using the "-s" switch, the program
may not run correctly.
2) After executing the program, the write filter must commit the changes to the
flash memory. This can be done by executing the following command from
the command line:
C:\windows\system32\ewfmgr.exe c: -commit
3) Reboot the thin client after changes are committed to the flash memory.
Server Side
NOTES:
In VMWare View 3 environments that use View Manager 3 broker, please
uninstall TCX Multimedia and USB redirection if you want to use HP RDP
Multimedia and USB enhancements.
If you install additional VMWare features after installing the HP RDP
Multimedia and USB Enhancements software, the registry keys are cleared
and the add-on is no longer functional. You will need to edit the Registry key,
as shown in Editing the Registry Key for VMWare View 3 below.
1. Go to www.hp.com. From Customer Support, select Software & Driver Downloads.

4. Locate and download HP RDP Multimedia and USB Enhancement Software (Server Side). Follow the
instructions in the text file that accompanies the Softpaq to unbundle the compressed files.
5. Double-click HP RDP Multimedia and USB Enhancements (Server Side).
6. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the server-side components. When prompted, choose which
components to install:
Complete: This is the default; select this to install all components.
Custom: This option allows you to choose which components (Multimedia Redirection, USB
Redirection) to install.
NOTE:
USB Redirection is not supported under Windows Terminal Server. If running
Terminal Server 2003, you will need to deselect USB Redirection when
installing the server side component.
7. Restart the server to complete installation.

Configuration
A redirected, or shared, device is a device that behaves as if it is connected to the remote desktop.
An unshared or excluded device is only available locally. An excluded device will not be
automatically shared, even if Auto-share is checked.
To redirect (share) USB devices, complete the following steps:
1. On the thin client, open the Control Panel and select HP RDP USB Redirector Client:
NOTE:
If Use Taskbar Icon is checked in the HP RDP USB Redirector Client dialog,
you can right-click the icon in the taskbar to open the HP RDP USB Redirector
status as shown below:
This lists the devices that are currently available, plugged in, or busy:
Plugged in: The USB device is plugged in and available locally. It is not
redirected (shared) for use with the remote desktop.
Available: The USB device is ready to be redirected (shared) and used with
the remote desktop. The USB device is not available locally at this time.
Busy: The USB device is redirected to the remote desktop session and is in
use. It is not available locally.
Click Advanced to display the HP RDP USB Redirector Client dialog.

2. Select the USB devices you want to redirect.
To automatically redirect all USB devices, check Auto-share devices (Auto-share is off by
default).
NOTE:
Auto-share will automatically share devices when they are plugged in. Most
USB keyboards and mice are automatically excluded from Auto-share,
because when a device is shared, it is disconnected from the local system.
However, some multi-interface (composite USB) keyboards might not be
automatically excluded from Auto-share. These types of devices should be
manually excluded before enabling Auto-share.
To redirect specific USB devices, select each device individually from the list displayed, then
click Share, Unshare, or Exclude.
oA shared (redirected) device behaves as if it is connected to the remote desktop.
oAn unshared (not redirected) device is available to the local thin client only.
oAn excluded device will not be automatically shared, even when Auto-share is
selected.
To prevent a device from being automatically redirected for use with the remote desktop,
select the device and click Exclude. This disables both Share and Unshare. In order to share
the device manually or automatically, you must click Unexclude.
Editing the Registry Key for VMWare View 3
NOTE:
It is highly recommended that you back up (export) the Registry prior to
modifying anything in it.
If you install additional VMWare features after installing the HP Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)
Multimedia and USB Enhancements software, the registry keys are cleared and the add-on is no
longer functional. You will need to edit the Registry key, as shown in the steps below.
1. Click Start > Run.
2. Type REGEDIT and click OK.
3. Browse to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMware VDM\Client
4. Right-click VirtualChannelDLLs and select Modify.
5. Type the following text into the key value text box:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VMware\VMware Virtual
Printing\TPClnRDP.dll,hpusbrdpclnt.dll,HPMMRCLI.dll
6. Click OK.

Known Limitations and Considerations
Multimedia
The MPEG-4 file format, as defined by the MPEG-4 specification, contains MPEG-4 encoded video
and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC)-encoded audio content. It typically uses the .mp4 extension.
Windows Media Player does not support playback of the .mp4 file format. You can play back
.mp4 media files in Windows Media Player when you install DirectShow-compatible MPEG-4
decoder packs. DirectShow-compatible MPEG-4 decoder packs include the Ligos LSX-MPEG Player
and the EnvivioTV. Please refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992#34 for additional
information.
High-Definition (HD) video is not supported on t5630, 5630w, t5720, t5730, t5730w.
Audio
Cannot mute video over HP Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Multimedia and USB Enhancement
No sound from USB headset on multimedia applications. Use USB headset for voice applications
only.
Video
Video stops playing (rendering) after opening local Task Manager on t5630, t5720, t5730. Press
Stop on Windows Media Player, then press Start –video will restart.
Moving Windows Media Player from one display to another while using RDP Span mode will
cause video to freeze. Start Windows Media Player on the display you want to use.
USB
USB Redirection is not supported under Windows Terminal Server. If installed on Windows
Terminal Server 2003, a mapped USB device will show up on all user sessions. This is a security
consideration.
HP Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Multimedia and USB Enhancement has control of the USB port
on the thin client. No other application will have access to any USB ports unless Auto-Shared is
turned off after installation. Refer to the Configuration section, above.
USB drive with EXT3 format may cause HP Virtual Client server to crash.
USB keyboard causes device error when shared and unshared rapidly.
Logitech QuickCam Communicate Deluxe causes session to terminates when redirected. This device
is not supported.
HP Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Multimedia and USB Enhancement applet will list some devices
as “USB DEVICE” instead of displaying the correct device name or class name.
