Description
Fabric OS 6.1.0a integrated many new features that carry forward to 6.1.2b, including:
•Enhanced connectivity with M-series products:
• Support for native connectivity modes on all 8-Gb blades and platforms
• Traffic isolation zones in native connectivity modes
• Frame redirection support in native connectivity modes
• FICON CUP cascading
• E_Port authentication
• Enhanced scalability for interopmode 3 (Open Fabric mode); support for 31 domains and
2,048 devices
• SANtegrity fabric binding in both interopmode 2 and interopmode 3, including Fibre Channel
Routing (FCR) support
•Access Gateway enhancements:
• AG trunking
• Advanced device security policy
• 16-bit routing
•Integrated routing, providing FCR support on 8-Gb ports and blades

New feature summaries
This section lists features and improvements introduced with Fabric OS 6.1.x and carried forward to
6.1.2b.
Enhanced connectivity with McDATA products
McDATA connectivity enhancements include:
•M-EOS Native Fabric mode support—HP supports interopmode 2 on Fabric OS 6.1.2x on the
4/256 SAN Director and DC SAN Director. This allows Directors to participate directly in M-EOS
fabrics running in McDATA Fabric mode. M-EOS products in the fabric must be running M-EOS
09.08.00 or later.
•M-EOS Open Fabric mode support—HP supports interopmode 3 on Fabric OS 6.1.2x with the
4/256 SAN Director and DC SAN Director. This allows Directors to participate directly in M-EOS
fabrics running in Open Fabric mode. M-EOS products in the fabric must be running M-EOS
09.08.00 or later. Interopmode 3 scalability limits have also been increased to match those of
interopmode 2.
•Traffic isolation zones supported in mixed fabrics in interopmode 2—Fabric OS 6.1.x allows the
traffic isolation zones in fabrics with M-type products. The M-EOS-based products can also provide
the same capability through preferred path configurations.
•Frame redirection—Fabric OS 6.1.x allows frame redirection on Fabric OS products that are op-
erating in interopmode 2 or 3. This provides even greater flexibility and support for environments
that use the powerful frame redirection capability.
Access Gateway
Access Gateway enhancements include:
•Trunking with Access Gateway—Enables frame distribution across a set of available paths linking
Access Gateway to an adjacent switch. The adjacent switch to the Access Gateway must be an
HP StorageWorks switch running Fabric OS 6.1.x or later. This feature also enhances availability
by enabling seamless failover of traffic from a failed N_Port to other ports in a trunk group.
Trunking is an optional licensed feature.
•Advanced Device Security (ADS) policy—Extends the DCC policy to a switch module in Access
Gateway mode. DCC policy support enables a user to restrict N_Port logins through an F_Port of
an Access Gateway. The user must provide a list of device port WWNs for an F_Port to enable
those devices to log in through that F_Port. This policy is also supported for N_Port ID Virtualization
(NPIV) connections on F_Ports.
•16-bit routing enhances interoperability of Access Gateway with Cisco fabrics. This applies to 8-
Gb platforms only.
Traffic isolation zones over FCR
This enhancement enables traffic isolation across EX_Ports and VEX_Ports. This benefits applications
such as Tape Pipelining and FastWrite that traverse VE_Ports, where customers want to control the
exact path and ports.

Port mirroring
Fabric OS 6.1.0a added support for port mirroring to 8-Gb ports. Port mirroring mirrors traffic in
both directions between a source and destination ID pair to a single mirror port. The user can connect
an FC analyzer to this mirror port to capture all mirrored traffic and perform troubleshooting or
analysis.
Buffer credit recovery
Fabric OS 6.1.x implemented the credit recovery protocol, described in FC-FS standards. This feature
is supported only on E_Ports and allows switches to automatically recover buffer credits that were
accidentally lost over time. Buffer credit recovery prevents link performance degradation that can
occur due to loss of credits.
FCIP performance enhancements
Fabric OS 6.1.x increased committed rate tunnel performance (utilization) when compressibility
exceeds 2:1. Previous firmware releases capped FC data rates to two times the committed rate of the
FCIP tunnel. As a result, when the compression ratio exceeds 2:1, FC throughput remains constant at
twice the committed rate and the link utilization decreases. Fabric OS 6.1.x monitors compressibility,
adjusts to more compressible data, and works to fill the FCIP tunnel to the committed rate.
Port fencing
Fabric OS 6.1.x added the new port fencing capability that automatically isolates a port that is
behaving outside the bounds of a normal, expected operation. This enhances overall stability of the
fabric so that an isolated event does not cause a major disruption. Port fencing is included as part of
the optional licensed Fabric Watch feature.
LDAP
Fabric OS 6.1.x added Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) enhancements that allow Active
Directory server roles to be mapped to the various switch roles.
Parameter added for slotshow command
An optional –m parameter for the slotshow command can be used to display the model names for
each blade installed in a DC SAN Director or 4/256 SAN Director chassis.
Scripting
Many automatic page breaks in output for CLI commands have been removed to facilitate scripting.
Notification of duplicate WWN entry
A RASLog entry will occur when a switch detects that a duplicate WWN has logged in.

Update recommendations
NOTE:
With the introduction of Fabric OS 6.1.1, certain features and functions were removed from WebTools
(resident in the firmware) and migrated to the DCFM management application. HP recommends that
before you upgrade to 6.1.1x or later, if DCFM is not running on your fabric, you review Web tools
functionality moved to DCFM and take note of what has changed so you can assess the impact to
your fabric.
All products supported by Fabric OS 6.0.x can be upgraded to Fabric OS 6.1.2b. If applicable, HP
recommends that users upgrade to Fabric OS 6.1.2b as soon as possible to take advantage of the
latest fixes and features.
Upgrading to Fabric OS 6.1.2b is allowed only from Fabric OS 6.0.0b and later. This policy to
support only one-level migration, which began with Fabric OS 6.0.0, provides more reliable and
robust migrations for customers. With fewer major changes in internal databases, configurations, and
subsystems, the system can perform the upgrade more efficiently, taking less time and ensuring a truly
seamless and nondisruptive process for the fabric. The new one-level migration policy also reduces
the large number of upgrade/downgrade permutations that must be tested.
Only products based on 4-Gb and 8-Gb-capable ASICs are supported by Fabric OS 6.1.2b. Older
products using previous-generation 2-Gb ASICs will remain on the 5.x code stream. Fabric OS 5.x
is fully compatible in fabrics running Fabric OS 6.1.x, and for routing.
For routed SANs with M-EOS switches in an edge fabric, upgrades to Fabric OS 6.1.2b will be
nondisruptive if all EX_Ports to M-EOS edge fabrics are attached to B-series SAN Directors with an
MP router blade (FR4-18i). See Firmware upgrade instructions, page 15 for instructions on upgrading
to Fabric OS 6.1.2b.
New hardware support
There is no new hardware support introduced with Fabric OS 6.1.2b.
NOTE:
The HP StorageWorks SAN Director 16 Port 8-Gb FC blade (FC8-16) is supported with the 4/256
SAN Director, starting with Fabric OS 6.0.0b. The HP StorageWorks SAN Director 32 Port 8-Gb FC
blade (FC8-32) and HP StorageWorks SAN Director 48 Port 8-Gb FC blade (FC8-48) are supported
with the 4/256 SAN Director starting with Fabric OS 6.1.0a.

Access Gateway support
Access Gateway is supported with the following HP products only:
•Brocade 4-Gb SAN Switch for HP p-Class BladeSystem (Brocade 4012)
•Brocade 4-Gb SAN Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem (Brocade 4024)
•HP StorageWorks 4/16 SAN Switch (Brocade 200E)
•HP StorageWorks 8/24 SAN Switch (Brocade 300)
IMPORTANT:
Although the HP StorageWorks 4/8 SAN Switch uses the same hardware as the 4/16 SAN Switch,
it does not support Access Gateway. The same applies to the HP StorageWorks 8/8 and 8/24 SAN
Switches: both use the same hardware, but only the 8/24, which has all ports licensed, has Access
Gateway support. Also, Access Gateway mode is not supported with the Brocade 4-Gb SAN Switch
for HP p-Class BladeSystem (Brocade 4012) if any half-height BladeServers (BL3xp) are configured
in the same sleeve in the p-Class enclosure. For the latest updates, see the HP website:

Access Gateway was introduced with Fabric OS 5.2.1b. It allows a switch to operate in agmode,
which allows simplified connectivity between large numbers of servers and the SAN. Access Gateway
leverages N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) to hide the complexity of the servers (both physical and
virtual) attached to it, while allowing easy SAN connectivity. The edge fabric switch provides all fabric
services, while Access Gateway connects to the edge switch by what appears as a host bus adapter
(HBA) connection. This architecture allows the deployment of many additional servers without requiring
a domain and the associated fabric rebuild traffic. Rebuild traffic is prevalent when switches are
powered on, added, or removed from a fabric.

Access Gateway support in non-Brocade fabrics
In addition to being supported in Brocade fabrics, Access Gateway is supported for connectivity to
the following:
•McDATA switches: 2/12 (ES4300), 2/24 (ES4500), 2/16 (ES3216), 2/32 (ES3232), 2/64
(ED6064), 2/140 (M6140), M4400, and Mi10K running EOS 09.07.02 with Brocade Fabric
OS 6.1.x

•Cisco switches: MDS 9216, MDS 9216A, MDS 9506, and MDS 9509 running SAN OS 3.0(2a)
with Brocade Fabric OS 6.1.x
Secure Fabric OS feature not compatible with Fabric OS 6.x
and later
Fabric OS 5.3.x is the last Fabric OS version compatible with SFOS. However, all of the security
features of SFOS have been fully integrated into the base Fabric OS, starting with Fabric OS 5.3.x.
Zoning and fabric operations
When configuring zoning or other fabric-wide settings in a fabric that has products operating with
different versions of Fabric OS, HP recommends that you perform the configuration via an interface
(such as WebTools) to a product with the most recent version of Fabric OS. Some older versions of
Fabric OS do not fully support newer hardware models, and problems may arise when configuring
settings through these older products.
NOTE:
Do not perform a zoning configuration through a switch operating with Fabric OS 3.x in a fabric
that also has products operating with newer versions of Fabric OS.
Fabric OS feature compatibility in native connectivity modes
Some Fabric OS features are not fully supported when operating in the native connectivity modes for
deployment with M-EOS-based products. All HP StorageWorks models that are supported by Fabric
OS 6.1.2b support interopmodes 2 and 3, with the exception of the HP StorageWorks 4/32 SAN
Switch.
Table 1 lists the Fabric OS features supported when operating in either interopmode 2 (McDATA
Fabric mode) or interopmode 3 (Open Fabric mode) with Fabric OS 6.1.2b.
