2 Introduction to the Development Board
The EM820W module works inside the portable computer through the Mini PCI-E
interface, which is inconvenient for the user during measurement and commission.
With the EM820W simplified board, the signals that the EM820W module needs on
the Mini PCI-E interface are simulated outside the portable computer. The signals are
used for product development, commission, and software upgrade on production
lines.
Figure 2-1 shows the board structure.
Figure 2-1 Structure of the EM820W simplified board
The test points shown in the preceding figure are described as follows:
1. USB connector: Mini USB B type, side-plugged USB connector;
2. Mini PCI-E connector: female, 52-pin, straight, SMT;
3. Connector locker: used together with the Mini PCI-E connector for fixing the
module;
4. SIM card holder: used for SIM card insertion;
5. RF connector: coaxial connector, straight, male, SMT;
6. RF connector: RF switch, bent, female, SMT;

On the module, the Mini-PCI interface signals are: voltage of power, SIM card
interface, USB D+, D-interface, LED indicator interface. The implementation of
signals on the simplified board is as follows:
1. Voltage of power: The USB port of the PC supplies the power (5 V), which is
converted into 3.3 V power for the module.
2. SIM card interface: The SIM card slot is expanded outside the board.
3. Data communication: The module exchanges data with the PC through the USB
port.
4. LED indicator: LED indicators are expanded outside the board.
In addition, the antenna adapter is also expanded outside the board for connecting to
an external antenna to perform the current network test

3 Functions of the Interfaces on the
Development Board
3.1 Power Interface
The power interface is used to connect an external Mini USB Port to the EM820W
module. Thus, power can be supplied to the module. Figure 3-1 shows a circuit of the
external power interface.
Figure 3-1 External power interface circuit
3.2 SIM Card Socket
A development board is equipped with a SIM card socket. You can easily insert and
remove a SIM card. Figure 3-2 shows a SIM card circuit.

3.3 Mini PCI Express Interface
The interface of the EM820W is a standard Mini PCI Express interface. The EM820W
consists of several major signals, as shown in the following figure.
Figure 3-3 Mini PCI Express Interface
zUSIM interface: The USIM interface provides the interface for a USIM card. The
USIM card can be inserted into the PC.
zUSB interface: The USB interface supports three modes of USB 2.0 (low speed,
full speed, and high speed). Because there is not a separate USB-controlled

voltage bus, USB functions implemented on EM820W which are expected to
report as self-powered devices.
zControl signals: The auxiliary signals provide some other functions.
zPower sources and grounds: The PCI Express Mini Card provides a 3.3 V power
source. The EM820W uses 3.3 voltage as the power supply.
3.4 RF Antenna Interface
Two RF connectors can be used for connecting to an antenna interface. In addition,
the antenna interface must be used with coaxial cables with 50 ohm characteristic
impedance.
The EM820W module supports one antenna connection method of buckled RF
connector U.FL-R-SMT-1(80) manufactured by Hirose.

4 Usage Guide
4.1 Usage of the EM820W Simplified Board
Connect the devices as follows to establish the test environment: Connect one end of
the module to the Mini PCI-E connector, and lock the other end to the locker. Insert
the SIM card into the card holder, and connect the PC and the board with the USB
cable as shown in the Figure 4-1. Note that you can connect the USB cable only after
the module is inserted into the Mini PCI-E connector and fixed, and the SIM card is
inserted into the holder.
Figure 4-1 Connection between the module and the CMU200
When performing the wired radio frequency (RF) index test, connect the CMU200
and the RF interface of the module with the special RF cable (see Figure 4-2 for the
main and diversity connection methods). The compensation of line loss of CMU200 is
about 0.7 dBm.

Figure 4-2 Connection between the module and the antennas
When performing the wireless connection test, connect the module to the debugging
board by using the RF cable. Then, connect the antennas to the RF interface of the
module directly. (For the connection method, see Figure 4-2)
4.2 Test Points on the EM820W Simplified Board
On the EM820W simplified board, some important signals related to the module on
the Mini-PIC-E interface are the test points, as shown in Figure 4-3.
Figure 4-3 Test points on the module
The test points shown in the preceding figure are described as follows:
