Armored Handset Cord Replacement Kit

General Information
This kit is intended for use on units equipped with factory-installed armored cords and is used on the
following GAI-Tronics telephones: Models 246-001, 247-001, 256-001, and 257-001.
This kit includes the following components:

•Phillips screwdriver
•Flathead screwdriver
•5/64-inch Allen screwdriver
•¾-inch wrench
•Needle-nose pliers or a Heyco®bushing tool

Removing the Existing Handset
1. Loosen and remove the screws securing the front panel. Pull the front panel assembly away from the
back enclosure.
2. Disconnect the modular telephone line from the printed circuit board (PCBA).
3. Lay the front panel assembly face down on a horizontal surface to access the rear of the assembly.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Before disconnecting the existing wires, document the connections. For example
(E# - White, E# - Black, etc.)
4. Remove the lugs for the green, red, white, and black wires handset wires from the PCBA.
5. Using a 3/4-inch box wrench, loosen the strain relief the retaining nut securing the cord to the PCBA,
and pull the cord through the hole.
6. Using the 5/64-inch Allen screwdriver, remove the set screw from the rear of the armored cord strain
relief. Pull the cord and conductors through the armored cord strain relief.
Installing the New Armored Cord
1. Locate the end of the armored cord with conductors of staggered lengths. Feed this end through the
hole in the strain relief until the end of the armored cord appears inside the transmitter cavity.
NOTE:The blue and yellow wires are
not needed with handsets that are not
equipped with a pressbar volume control
in the center of the cradle. In this case,
these wires can be cut off at both ends of
the cord.
2. Refer to Figure 1 for details on wiring
the handset. Feed the red and green
wire through the handset cradle to the
receiver end of the handset. Connect the
wires to the receiver element.
3. Place the receiver element into the
receiver cavity and screw on the
receiver cap.

4. Pull the yellow and blue wires through the pressbar cavity (if so equipped) and connect the wires to
separate terminals on the pressbar switch. Place the switch back into the cavity and install the
remaining components in the following order. See Figure 2.
•Place the plunger (flat plate with the keyed top) onto the switch.
•Place the curved metal spring onto the plunger.
•Place the pressbar onto the spring, with the notch at the bottom aligned with the hole in the
spring.
•Put the retainer cover over the pressbar; and using the Phillips screwdriver, tighten both screws to
complete the switch installation.

5. Connect the black and white wires to the rear of the transmitter. The armored cord is pinched near
the end of the cord. Align this point with the retaining forks at the rear of the transmitter and screw
the retaining cap over the transmitter to complete the handset. Pull on the cord to verify the forks on
the transmitter is holding the cord. If the cord pulls out of the handset, repeat the last step.
6. At the other end of the armored cord, feed the wires through the armored cord strain relief using
needle-nose pliers. Pull each wire through the threaded end of the strain relief until the end of the
armored cord enters the strain relief.
7. Insert and tighten the Allen set screw in the block to secure the armored cord.
8. Feed the wires through the front panel and insert the strain relief into the front panel hole. Then
screw the retaining nut onto the strain relief and tighten.
9. Reconnect the handset conductors to the appropriate terminals identified at the beginning of this
procedure.

Warranty
Equipment.GAI-Tronics warrants for a period of one (1) year from the date of shipment, that any
GAI-Tronics equipment supplied hereunder shall be free of defects in material and workmanship, shall
comply with the then-current product specifications and product literature, and if applicable, shall be fit
for the purpose specified in the agreed upon quotation or proposal document. If (a) Seller’s goods prove
to be defective in workmanship and/or material under normal and proper usage, or unfit for the purpose
specified and agreed upon, and (b) Buyer’s claim is made within the warranty period set forth above,
Buyer may return such goods to GAI-Tronics nearest depot repair facility, freight prepaid, at which time
they will be repaired or replaced, at Seller’s option, without charge to Buyer. Repair or replacement shall
be Buyer’s sole and exclusive remedy, and the warranty period on any repaired or replacement equipment
shall be one (1) year from the date the original equipment was shipped. In no event shall GAI-Tronics
warranty obligations with respect to equipment exceed 100% of the total cost of the equipment supplied
hereunder. Buyer may also be entitled to the manufacturer’s warranty on any third-party goods supplied
by GAI-Tronics hereunder. The applicability of any such third-party warranty will be determined by
GAI-Tronics.
Services. Any services GAI-Tronics provides hereunder, whether directly or through subcontractors,
shall be performed in accordance with the standard of care with which such services are normally
provided in the industry. If the services fail to meet the applicable industry standard, GAI-Tronics will,
for a period of one (1) year from the date of completion, re-perform such services at no cost to Buyer. Re-
performance of services shall be Buyer’s sole and exclusive remedy, and in no event shall GAI-Tronics
warranty obligations with respect to services exceed 100% of the total cost of services provided
hereunder.
Warranty Periods. Every claim by Buyer alleging a defect in the goods and/or services provided
hereunder shall be deemed waived unless such claim is made in writing within the applicable warranty
periods as set forth above. Provided, however, that if the defect complained of is latent and not
discoverable within the above warranty periods, every claim arising on account of such latent defect shall
be deemed waived unless it is made in writing within a reasonable time after such latent defect is or
should have been discovered by Buyer.
Limitations / Exclusions. The warranties herein shall not apply to, and GAI-Tronics shall not be
responsible for, any damage to the goods or failure of the services supplied hereunder, to the extent
caused by Buyer’s neglect, failure to follow operational and maintenance procedures provided with the
equipment, or the use of technicians not specifically authorized by GAI-Tronics to maintain or service the
equipment. THE WARRANTIES AND REMEDIES CONTAINED HEREIN ARE IN LIEU OF AND
EXCLUDE ALL OTHER WARRANTIES AND REMEDIES, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED
BY OPERATION OF LAW OR OTHERWISE, INCLUDING ANY WARRANTIES OF
MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
Return Policy
If the equipment requires service, contact your Regional Service Center for a return authorization number
(RA#). Equipment should be shipped prepaid to GAI-Tronics with a return authorization number and a
purchase order number. If the equipment is under warranty, repairs or a replacement will be made in
accordance with the warranty policy set forth above. Please include a written explanation of all defects to
assist our technicians in their troubleshooting efforts.
