1 Intended Use
Operational safety of the equipment supplied is ensured only when used as intended.
The intended use includes following the regulations contained in these operating instructions
as well as compliance with all maintenance and service tasks.
The IMS cutter DRIVE must only be used for cutting work for the restoration of pressureless
pipes or lines. The device can be used to open inliners after restoration and remove
obstacles (roots, protruding seals, minor offsets, or the like). The machine may not be used
for unintended purposes.
Unauthorised structural changes to the equipment may cause damage to the machine thus
representing a hazard to persons. IMS is not liable for resulting damages. In the event of
damage, the operating company remains responsible and responsibility cannot be
transferred to IMS.

7
2 Operation
2.1 General
The IMS cutter DRIVE is a device for performing cutting tasks for the purpose of renovation
unpressurized pipes and/or pipelines. The cutter allows to open inliner after renovation and to
remove obstacles (including roots, projecting seals, minor offsets).
Commissioning of the IMS cutter DRIVE requires provision of the cutter itself, the chassis with
cable drum, hose package and control unit, the accessories, and the required supply media.
The cutter consists of the following assemblies:
1
Cutter drive
2
Cutter motor

The camera, the cutter drive and the chassis are equipped with serial numbers.
All assemblies have a minimum protection class of IP54. This means that the assemblies are
protected against:
-infiltration by wire
-dust
-spray on all sides.
The supply media need to have the following properties:
Power supply: 100 - 240 VAC, 47 –63 Hz, max. 7,4 A
Supply line pressure: Free of dirt (particles < 5 micron),
Temperature range 5 °C up to max. 40 °C
(41 °F up to max. 104 °F),
Residual water separated,
Residual oil < 5 mg/m3,
Supply line pressure 10 bar (145 PSI),
min. volume flow 1 m3/min (35 CFM).

2.3 Device operation
-Check the completeness of the assemblies and accessories as well as the supply
media in the required quality!
-Set up the cutter drive to the required nominal-width (see 0 ).
-Transport the cutter drive (with camera and cutter motor), the chassis and the
accessories to the chosen work area (manhole, etc.).
-The chassis must be located in the immediate vicinity of the manhole; if not possible,
use deflection rollers.
-Unwind the hose package (as far as necessary for introduction into the manhole or
inspection opening) from the drum!
-The hose package must not be pulled over sharp edges or bent when being handled.
-Optional: Connect the meter counting and the keyboard (see 2.10.2 Meter counting
(optional)

12
-Unscrew the cover plates from the coupling of the cutter drive and on the hose package.
-Visual control of the O-rings in the coupling of the cutter drive.
Connect the couplings so that the notch marks are aligned to each other! Bolt the cutter
drive with the hose package using the two cover bolts on the hose package connector.
-Check the required cutting tool for imbalance (e. g. missing blades! If OK, then fasten
the cutting tool (see 2.11.2 Cutting tool replacement)!
WARNING! Damaged or not to the device adapted cutting tool extensions, wire
brushes or other tools can cause serious damages to the device.
-If applicable, fill the water tank (optional) on the drum with distilled water (the air supply
from the compressor must be switched OFF or the shut-off valve on the frame must be
CLOSED)! For that, open the ball valve at the water tank, fill the tank and close the ball
valve again. The filling level is shown by the transparent hose on the water tank.
WARNING! Don´t lean over the charging hole while opening the ball valve. The tank
is under pressure.

13
-If not already connected, connect the control unit with the drum! All switches on the
control unit need to be in OFF position!
Optional available is an extension for the connection between the control unit and the
cable drum.
Connection of a monitor to the control unit
-Connect the monitor PSU to the power supply if required.
-Connect the drum to the power supply. The LED (green) on the drum on the left side
below the emergency stop must light up. Otherwise, the power supply units are broken
(contact service) or the supply leads are faulty. Check, that the emergency stop button
is not activated and press the release button.

14
-The light on the cutter drive must switch on.
-After every disconnection of the cutter from the power supply, or activation of the
emergency stop button, the release button need to be pressed.
-Pressure monitoring of the cutter begins with connection of the power supply unit (After
approx. 10 seconds, the LED on the camera must flash 2 times. If the LED flash more
frequently and the flashing repeats every 30 seconds, then the nitrogen pressure is too
high or too low; maintenance is required.
-Pressure monitoring
-Connect the supply line from the compressor respectively the after cooler to the
coupling disc on the frame!
-Insert the cutter drive into an auxiliary pipe (approx. 1,5 m long)!
WARNING! Operating the device without an auxiliary pipe can cause injuries when
switching on compressed air, which in turn starts the cutter motor!
-Check that the shutoff valve on the drum is closed and the switch for the cutter motor
on the control unit is switched off!
-Switch the compressor on!
WARNING! Put on/insert ear protectors!
-Open the shutoff valve on the drum!
-Using the right joystick on the control unit to check the turning function (left and right
deflection) and stroke function (deflection away from and towards the operator)
-Using the left joystick on the control unit to check the driving function by steering up
and down.
WARNING! When driving backwards, hold the hose taut so as to activate the reverse
drive sensor. The reverse drive sensor can be fine-tuned at the eye bolt (see 4.2.2
Checking and fine-tuning of the reverse drive sensor)
-Check the light control, the potentiometer for the automatic hose drum (optional), the
switch for the pressure rail and the switch for the camera water flushing!

15
-Check the F2 / switch function. To do so, steer with the joystick.
With the pressure rail extended, the cutter drive must move slowly until the joystick
stops moving.
-Release the manual brake. (there is no manual brake available at the option of
“automatic hose drum”)
-Unreel enough hose for cutter deployment in the ducting! To do so, either unreel hose
manually or –if the automatic unreeling unit is installed –steer the joystick “Driving” on
the control unit up and pull on the hose until enough hose has been unreeled!
-Turn off all switches on the control unit, the air shutoff valve on the drum and remove
the cutter drive from the auxiliary pipe!
