WIRING
The WalzCAM™ is supplied with 3 different cables.
The power cable
The Video Cable, which is equipped with 2 RJ45 and 2 BNC connectors.
The Keyboard cable
All the 3 connectors are IP68 rated. Screw terminations ensure simple ‘field’ connection, which fulfil the
requirement for fast effective connections.
The length of the Power and Video cables is 5 meters. Longer cable can be supplied on request.
The length of the the Keyboard cable is 3 meters.
Step 1. Plug the 12 pins Video Cable in the central connector (see picture 1 in the previous page)
Step 2. Connect the power supply to the Power connector, and then plug the adaptor in the power outlet.
Step 3. Connect the keyboard cable to the 10 pins connector on the right end side of the camera (see picture
1). The keyboard is required to setup the lens (Iris, Zoom in & out, Focus) for both camera board (if
installed).

CAMERA INSTALLATION
Mounting and Adjusting the Camera
Once you have secured the camera to the camera-mounting bracket, you should aim the camera to the
license plate point of capture. The WalzCAM™ mounts a 5-50 mm motorized lens therefore the camera
maximum capturing distance can be extended up to 20 meters.
If you have been using the camera with Intertraff license plate recognition software, please note that this
requires the license plate to be ¼ of the width of the video signal.
Smaller or bigger registration number will be rejected by the software because this requires the height of
the license plate characters to be between 10 and 40 pixels
During the WalzCAM™ installation the horizontal and vertical angle should not be greater than 30 degrees.
The lower the angle, the higher the recognition rate which can be expected .
Start by setting up the camera after the sunset. This is helped by having a TV monitor available, connected
directly to the camera video output (BNC 1), so the result can be immediately seen.
Adjust the aim of the camera with vehicles passing through the point of capturing, so that the number plates
are roughly central in the image. If the camera is offset to the site of the road, the vehicles will appear to
move diagonally through the field of view. They should be central when just passing the point of capturing.
The central point must be adjusted to coincide with the optimum plate image size as the vehicle approaches
or recedes from the camera.
Changing the lens setting through the Keyboard
Please have the keyboard cable connected to the camera.
Lets start with the setup of <Camera 1> (the IR camera). Move the switch
on the top / left corner of the board to CAM 1 (right position).
Move the second switch on the top/ right corner on <Zoom-Focus> (right
position).
To operate the Zoom in & out, push the north / south buttons. Do not keep
the button pushed. Just push and release it quickly. Once you are happy
with the Zoom setup, move to Focus by pushing the ast – West buttons.
Some care needs to be taken when edging the lens in the direction you
want to go, so as not to over run the ideal focus etc
To setup the IRIS move the switch at the top / right corner to <Iris> (left
position). Then take the West button (I-) and keep it pressed until the iris
closes completely and the image becomes dark. Only at this point use
the ast button to open the IRIS with short touches. When the setup is
complete, move to camera 2 (the colour camera) by moving the top / left
switch to <CAM 2> (left position).
13

Intertraff WalzCAM User Manual
Optimum plate image size
It is crucial to set the size of the image correctly, either by changing the zoom setting of the lens or by
altering the camera aim. The width of a number plate should be approximately 25% of image width at
the nominal point where it is to be recognized. Intertraff ANPR software is very tolerant of variations in
plate and will be working reliably if the height of the license plate characters is between 10 and 40 pixels.
When the camera position is properly set, tighten the mounting bolts firmly so to prevent movement. When
the rest of the system is working, the camera aim can be checked more accurately and readjusted if
necessary.
Adjust the focus of the lens to give a sharp picture at the recognition point. The size of the number plate in
the processed image below is correct:
Picture 3
One of the common errors, is to open the IRIS as much as possible so to “see” the chassis of the vehicle.
See picture which follows. The aim of any ANPR Camera is to supply to the plate recognition software an
image where only the registration number is visible and well illuminated while the other details surrounding
the plate are dark or not visible.
Picture 4
14

Intertraff WalzCAM User Manual
The IRIS is an adjustable opening (aperture), which controls the amount of light coming through the lens (ie.
the "exposure"). The WalzCAM camera iris works in basically the same way as a still camera iris - as you
open the iris, more infrared light comes in and the number plate picture appears brighter.

Internet Explorer Security Settings
The WalzCAM™ uses JavaScript and ActiveX control technologies. The ActiveX control must be downloaded
from the camera and installed on your PC.
Consider also to enable the following Internet xplorer security settings:
1. Download signed ActiveX controls
2. Run ActiveX control and Plug-ins
3. Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting
4. Active Scripting (Java Scripts)
Generally, default security level in Internet xplorer is set to “Medium”.
In xplorer toolbar you need to select Tool => Internet Options => Security => Custom Level and set each of
the four items above to nable.
You do not need to enable unknown or unsigned ActiveX controls.
An unsigned ActiveX control, does not have a valid digital signature and if downloaded, can leave the PC
exposed to hackers and virus.
Please note that, in xplorer, you can anytime restore the default settings by selecting Tool => Internet
Options => Security => Default Level.
Because the camera built-in web server requires to download several codecs from Internet, we strongly
recommend to plug the camera to a router or network switcher connected to internet rather than connecting
the WalzCAM directly to the PC ethernet port.
IP Camera Initial Setup
If this is the first time that you attempt to connect to the IP camera, please run Internet xplorer and enter the
following IP address 192.168.0.100 in the address field. If you purchased a Dual WalzCAM model, please
note that the default IP address of the colour overview camera is: 192.168.0.101. See the image below.
The default username and password is: admin.
You can change the IP Camera’s password anytime, through System Setting / Account menu
16

Intertraff WalzCAM User Manual
Please make sure that no other computer is using the same IP address: 192.168.0.100 on the same LAN
area. To determine your IP address and network settings, please:
1. Click on “Start” => “Run” and type in: “cmd” and then press “ NT R”
2. Type the command: ipconfig and then press “ NT R”.
3. This will display your network card’s IP address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway.
4. Ping the WalzCAM default IP address: 192.168.0.100.
5. If Windows detects the camera, or a PC or another network device which is using this address, you will
see the messages which follow:

Changing the image properties
Brightness and Contrast levels are especially important to enhance the recognition rate.
The Brightness level should be reduced as much as possible while the Contrast should be increased as
much as possible. It is possible at anytime to back to the default values by pushing the System Setting /
Reset button. To change image properties push the Image adjust button (see the image below).
On Screen Display (OSD)
If you have been using the WalzCAM™ for license plate recognition the On Screen Display function shall be
OFF otherwise the writings the built-in web server overwrites on the images can interfere with the license
plate reading. To disable the OSD, push Live Video and select the Image Adjust button. The OSD controls
will appear at the bottom of the screen. Select the OSD drag and drop menu and set this to OFF.
