Observe the following guidelines when performing any work on your StorCenter devi e:
1. Follow all instru tions marked on the StorCenter devi e and in the do umentation.
2.
Use only the power supply able provided with the StorCenter devi e. Always use the
appropriate power supply able for your ountry.
3. Unplug the StorCenter devi e before leaning. Do not use liquid or aerosol leaners.
Use a damp loth for leaning.
4. Do not use the StorCenter devi e near water. Do not spill liquid on or into the
StorCenter devi e.
5. Do not pla e the StorCenter devi e on an unstable surfa e.
6. Openings in the StorCenter devi e abinet are provided for ventilation and should
not be blo ked or overed.
7. Make sure the StorCenter devi e has ample ventilation (at least 6" or 127 mm) in
front and behind the StorCenter devi e. Do not pla e the StorCenter devi e near or
on a radiator or heat register.
8. Do not walk on the power ord or allow anything to rest on it.
9. There is a danger of explosion if the battery is in orre tly repla ed. Repla e only
with the same or equivalent type re ommended by the equipment manufa turer.
Dispose of used batteries a ording to lo al, state, regional, and federal regulations.
Under any of the following onditions, unplug the StorCenter devi e from the wall outlet
and onta t te hni al support:
 The power ord or plug is damaged.
 Liquid has been spilled into the StorCenter devi e.
 The StorCenter devi e does not fun tion properly when the operating instru tions
are followed.
 The StorCenter devi e was dropped or the abinet is damaged.

3. Power on the StorCenter devi e using the power button on the ba k panel.
4. Start your omputer, wait for the operating system to load, then insert the CD.

The installer writes information to the /usr/bin dire tory whi h requires
root-level a ess. To su essfully install the StorCenter Manager software, you will
need to either log in as root or use sudo

Install the StorCenter Storage Manager software. On e the installation ompletes, the

5. Save your settings.

displays a summary of the setup settings. If you have hanged the default devi e name (storage),
when you li k Apply, the Restart Required page displays. Cli k Apply to restart your StorCenter
Devi e. When the devi e is restarted, your onne tion may be temporarily lost, and you may need
to log into the devi e Manager when the onne tion is restored.
You should now see a Congratulations page ontains your StorCenter Devi e name and its
network IP address, and links to the two Shared Folders, publi and Ba kups, that were reated
on your StorCenter Devi e. The StorCenter Devi e will attempt to onne t these Shared Folders to
folders on your lo al omputer. On Windows systems, drive letters will automati ally be assigned
to the onne ted Shared Folders.

The simplest way to onne t to the shared folders on your StorCenter devi e is to run the
StorCenter Manager software. StorCenter Manager is in luded on the Solutions CD that
ame with your drive. On e installed, the StorCenter Manager software will run
automati ally. StorCenter Manager will automati ally onne t you to the shared folders that
you have permission to a ess. You an onfigure whi h shares are automati ally

To find the StorCenter devi e on your network:

NOTE: The lient omputer must be on the same subnet or network segment as the
StorCenter devi e.
1. Laun h the Terminal appli ation lo ated in the Utilities folder.
2. Enter the ommand findsmb
findsmbfindsmb
findsmb and hit enter
enterenter
enter. This may take a moment to run.
3. The findsmb tool will return a list of all the devi es it finds on your network. Lo ate
the StorCenter devi e on the list.

NOTE: The default name for your StorCenter devi e is Storage
StorageStorage
Storage. If you have hanged
the name of your StorCenter devi e, look for that name on the list.
Use the IP address or devi e name listed in findsmb to onne t to shared folders.

You an ustomize your StorCenter devi e by hanging the advan ed onfiguration
settings. These settings in lude: User Management, Workgroup and Domain membership,
External Storage and Printer Management, Media Server Settings, et .
The simplest way to onfigure these settings is to run the StorCenter Manager software
that is in luded on the Solutions CD. Log into the management utility using the
administrator username and password you reated during the initial setup of the
StorCenter devi e. Cli k on the Settings

You an also enter the onfiguration tool by entering the IP address or devi e name in your
web browser (e.g., http://<storage>

). If you have enabled se urity,
you will be required to enter the administrator username and password. Cli k on the
