Pinion shaft (Crankshaft for use of this tool.
Assembly of tool for checking Flywheel run out on all Twin cams, EVO, and Shovels 1970 to 1984
1. Apply a small amount of cl an oil or lub to th thr ads of thumbscr w No.1392. Plac th mounting nd
of indicator No. 940 4 all th way into th bor at th top of indicator plat No.785 1. Position th indica-
tor’s fac to b on th sam sid as th Las r ngraving of plat . Just fing r tight n th thumbscr w No.1392
so th indicator will not mov .
See Fig 1.
2. Apply a small amount of cl an oil or lub to th thr ads of both thumb- scr ws No.1391. Plac th abov
ass mbly up to th cam cov r gask t surfac of right cas . Th n, d p nding on th y ar of ngin you will
b ch cking, install both thumbscr ws No.1391 through th las r mark d hol s and thr ad into th cas .
Th location of mounting scr ws is d t rmin d by th y ar and mod l as indicat d by th las r marking on
th outsid fac of th indicator plat . If th application is Twin Cam, install both thumbscr ws through th s
hol s and if th application is EVO or Shov l install both thumbscr ws through th s hol s. See Fig 1.
Caution: As you plac indicator plat No.785 1 ov r Pinion shaft using your fing r tip, lift indicator rod up and
ov r Pinion shaft.
3. On th right sid of indicator (about th 2:00 O-clock position) is th fac dial lock scr w. Loos n it and you
can turn th fac to locat th “O” (Z ro) at th indicating n dl . R tight n th lock scr w.
4. R mov th spark plugs and plac th transmission in high g ar. Position th r ar wh l off th ground and
plac on stand No. 936. You can rotat th ngin whil noting th amount of runout as shown on th dial
indicator.

able flywheel run out. If your flywheels are running out more
than the allowed amount, see JIMS catalog for the tools
required for flywheel removal. If your flywheels are in need of

Checking Gear drive cams for gear lash
Note: It will be much easier and you will have a better indicator
reading of gear lash if you remove the pushrods or release the
adjustment of all 4 pushrods.
1. If th All n h ad scr w No.1122 and spac r No.1085 is
mount d to th top l ft of indicator plat as shown in Fig 1.
r mov both and apply a small amount of cl an oil or lub to
th thr ads of scr w No.1122. Also r mov th indicator by
unscr wing thumbscr w No.1392.
2. Plac scr w No. 1122 through th mounting hol on th back
sid of indicator, follow d by spac r No.1085 ov r th scr w.
See Fig 1.
3. With your 3/16” All n wr nch mount this ass mbly to th top
right sid cam cov r mounting scr w hol . Just fing r tight n scr w no mor th n 50 in-lbs. At th sam
tim placing th sharp nd (tip r mov d) of th indicator’s st m on on of th top t th of cam g ar.
See Fig 2.
4. You will n d to mak sur that th small driv g ar mount d to Pinion shaft can not mov . You can
gain a mor accurat indicator r ading by using a wr nch (on th bolt holding th g ar to cam) to mov
th cam g ar back and forth as you ar ch cking g ar lash.
Note: Follow the manufactures specifications for the correct amount of gear lash required for a quiet valve train.
