Congratulations and thank you for purchasing the new JMI
Motofocus Plus hand control unit. Our new focus motor
controller is built using robust modern electronics
manufacturing technology and adds many new features to
our longtime go-to product.

Product Layout

Stand Alone Use
Charge the hand control unit by plugging in a
Micro-USB charger to the USB port on the side of
the hand controller unit. (Most cell phone chargers
are Micro-USB). The charging indicator will light
when the battery is charging. When the battery is
charged the light will turn off. The unit will charge
from “dead” to fully charged in approximately 90
minutes.
Press and release the power button to turn the unit
on. The red buttons will flash once, twice or three
times to indicate the remaining battery power
level. Three flashes represent maximum charge. If
the battery is depleted, the button lights will flash
rapidly four times and the unit will power off. You
must re-charge the battery.
Press and hold the power button for five seconds
and the unit will power off. The unit will auto-
power-off two hours after the last button press.
Slide the speed select switch to the left or right.
Left for slow speed and right for medium speed.
Press and release either of the focus control
buttons to move the focus motor one direction or
the other. The motor will turn at the speed
selected by the slide switch.
Press and hold either of the focus buttons. After
five seconds the motor will switch into high speed.
This allows for making large focus changes.

PC Interface Use
Download and install the free JMI Motofocus Plus
Application from our website (www.FarpointAstro.com).
A link to the install package will be listed in the product
description page for any of the motofocus products.
Additionally, direct your browser to
http://downloads.farpointastro.com for a direct listing
of available files.
Connect the hand control unit to a PC using a Micro-
USB cord. When the hand control unit is connected, it
will power on; the computer will recognize the unit
and establish a serial port connection. When
connected to a PC the auto- power-off feature is
disabled.
Start the Motofocus Plus Application.

Select the Comm port that the hand control unit is
attached to. The “Auto Select Port” will attempt to
locate a Motofocus Plus hand control unit connected
to the computer. The routine will select the first unit it
finds.The focus motor can be moved in short pulses.
Select one of the pulse duration radio buttons and
then click the “Pulse In” or “Pulse Out” button. Each
button press will move the motor a discrete amount.
The “1” setting is the shortest pulse length, the “2” is
twice the length, the “4” is four times the duration,
etc. The minimum pulse length, “base”, setting may be
adjusted in the configuration panel.
Press, hold and release either of the “Continuous”
buttons to move the motor either in or out. The motor

will move as long as the button is held down. This
function mimics the hardware buttons on the
controller.
The “Stay On Top”check box will keep the application
in the foreground when checked.
Press the “Setup” button to configure the hand control
firmware settings.

The Motor Voltage radio buttons select the base motor
voltage. Select the voltage appropriate for your
Motofocus motor type.
Adjust the minimum pulse length duration to suit your
configuration.
The Reverse Direction checkbox will switch the
direction that the buttons move the motor (“In”
becomes “out” and “out” becomes “in”).

The speed adjustments will let you make a percentage
override adjustment to the slow, medium and fast
speeds that the motor moves. Simply adjust the scroll
buttons to the desired levels.
The “Save to Controller” button will write the new
parameters to the hand controller non-volatile
memory.
The “Exit Setup” button will exit and close the setup
panel. If you have not previously saved any changes
they will be lost.
