Introduction to the XR-2
Radio System
ThankyouforpurchasingtheXR-2two-channelradiosys-
tem.ThissystemhasbeendesignedtoprovidetheR/Cracer
withahighquality,userfriendlyradiosystemthatcanbe
dependeduponyearafteryear,raceafterrace.Itisimportant
thatyoucarefullyreadthismanualbeforeattemptingto
operateyourXR-2system.Foryourconvenience,ablank
datasheethasbeenincludedinthebackofthismanual.
Onceyouhaveinputallthenecessarydataforaparticular
modelintoyourtransmitter,westronglyrecommendthat
youimmediatelywritethatinformationdownonthedata
sheetprovided.Thisinsuresthat,intherarecaseofamem-
oryfailure,youwillnotloseyourmodels’set-updata.
Forthosewhowouldliketogetouttothetrackquicklywith
justthebasicradioset-up,pleaserefertotheQuickStart
sectionthatfollows.

XR-2 Quick Start Setup
Inthismanualyou’llfindin-depthinstructionsdetailingall
thestepsandproceduresyou’llneedtofollowinorderto
programeachoftheXR-2’sfeaturescorrectly.Forthoserac-
erswhowanttogettothetrackfast,wehaveprovidedthe
QuickStartsectionbelow.QuickStartcoversthebasicpro-
gramminginformationnecessarytogetyoutothetrackfast.
Later,whenyouwanttolearnmoreaboutthespecific
featuresoftheXR-2,refertotheappropriatepage(s)inthis
manualformoredetailedprogramminginformation.
Servo Reversing
1. Withthetransmitterpowerswitchon,presstheMODE
keytoentertheFunctionMode.
2. PresstheMODEkeyfourtimesuntilSTappearsonthe
screen.TheSTindicatesthesteeringservoreversing
screen.
3. Presstheincreaseordecreasekeytomovethecursorto
thedesiredservodirection(Rev.Norm).
4. PresstheCHANNELkeyoncetoaccessthethrottleservo
reversingscreen.
5. Toselectthedirectionofthethrottleservo,repeatStep3
above.
Travel Adjustment
1. FromtheServoReversefunction,presstheMODEkey
twicetoaccesstheTravelAdjustmentfunction(theSTR
orSTLscreenwillappear).
Steering Adjustment:
2. Rotatethesteeringwheelinthedesireddirection(leftor
right)tobeadjusted.
3. PresstheINCREASEorDECREASEkeystoselectthe
desiredtravelvalue.
Throttle Adjustment:
4. PresstheCHANNELkeyonce.FWDwillappearonthe
screen.
5. PresstheINCREASEorDECREASEkeystoselectthe
desiredtravelvalue.
6. PresstheMODEandCHANNELkeysatthesametimeto
exittheFunctionMode.
Servo Trim Adjustment

ForsafeandreliableperformanceofyourR/Cmodel,please
carefullyreadandfollowtheseguidelines:
1. Radiocontrolmodelsarenottoys.Theyarecapableof
inflictingseriousinjurytopeopleandproperty.Usecau-
tionatalltimeswhenoperatingyourmodel.
2. YouareresponsibleforthesafeoperationofyourR/C
model.Youmustproperlyinstall,testandoperateyour
modelwithaclearsenseofthatresponsibility.Donot
takerisksthatmightendangeryourselforothers.
3. RunninganR/Ccarinthestreetsisverydangerousto
bothdriversandmodels.Avoidrunningyourmodelin
areasoccupiedbyfullsizeautomobiles.Tolocateareas
whereyoucansafelyoperateyourmodel,youshould
contactyourlocalhobbyshopforR/Ctracksorclubsin
yourarea.
4. WhenrunninganR/Cboat,keepitawayfromanyswim-
mers,fullsizeboats,orwildlife.Also,watchcarefullyfor
fishinglinesthatcanentanglethepropeller.
5. Beforeoperatingyourmodel,makesureyourfrequencyis
clear.Ifsomeoneelseisoperatingonthesamefrequency,
bothmodelswillgooutofcontrol,possiblycausingdam-
agetothemodelsaswellasothers.
6. IfatanytimewhileoperatingyourR/Cmodelyousense
abnormalmodelfunctioning,endyouroperationimmedi-
ately.Donotoperateyourmodelagainuntilyouarecer-
taintheproblemhasbeencorrected.
CAUTION: Controlofyourmodelisimpossiblewithoutsuf-
ficientvoltageforthetransmitterandreceiver.Aweaktrans-
mitterbatterywilldecreaseyourrangeofoperationanda
weakreceiverbatterywillslowservomovementand
decreaseyourrangeofoperation.Checkyourreceiverpack
voltageoftentoavoidlosingcontrolofyourmodel.When
usingamodelthatoperatesboththeelectricmotorandthe
receiverfromthesamebattery(BatteryEliminatingCircuitry
orB.E.C.),youshoulddiscontinueusewhenthetopspeed
sharplydecreasesoryouwillquicklylosecontrolofyour
model.

Steeringtensionisadjustableviatherecessedscrewlocated
beneaththesteeringwheel(seepage5forexactlocation).
Turningthescrewclockwiseincreasesthesteeringtension.
Charging Jack
Locatedontheright-handsideofthetransmitteristhe
chargingjack,whichacceptsonlyJRwallchargers.Please
donotattempttouseanyotherbrandofwallchargerasit
maybereversepolarityandcancausedamagetoyour
system.OnlyusetheJRwallchargerwhentheXR-2is
equippedwithNi-Cadbatteries(notincluded,JRPB958).

YourR-122ReceiverisequippedwithBatteryEliminator
Circuitry(B.E.C.).Thereceivergetsitspowerfromthe
model’sNi-Cadbatterypack,thussavingtheweightofan
additionalreceiverbattery.Ni-Cadbatteriesfrom4.8–8.4V
(4–7cells)canbeusedsafely.Highervoltagepacksmay
damagethereceiverandservos.
Note: WhenusingaseparatereceiverNi-Cadasapower
source,theoperatingvoltagerangeis4.8–6.0V
(4–5cell)
Attention: Makesurethemaleandfemaleconnectorshave
thecorrectpolarity(+/–)beforeconnecting.Theservolead
andreceivercasearemoldedsothattheleadcanonlybe
insertedcorrectly.Besuretoorienttheservoplugcorrectly
forproperinsertion.
Youmayuseaseparategastopowerthereceiver(suchas
forsomeelectricboatsoringas-poweredvehicles).ANi-
CadpackpluggedintotheBATTsocketonyourreceiverwill
operateyourreceiver.Youmayalsousealkalinebatteries
withtheincludedbatterybox.
Ifyouuseamechanicalspeedcontroller,pleasemakesure
thatithasthecorrectconnectorforaB.E.C.system(redcon-

Backup
WhenthevoltageoftheeightAAbatteriesdropsbelow9.0
volts,theXR-2’sdisplayscreenwillalternatebetweenthe
Normal(seeabove)andLowBatteryscreen(BATT)anda
continuousbeepingwilloccur,indicatingthatthebatteries
needtobereplacedbeforefurtheruse.TheLowBattery
screenisactiveduringanyofthethreeoperatingmodes.
Lithium Battery
YourXR-2radiosystemisequippedwitha5yearlithium
batterybackupsystem.Thissystemisdesignedtoprotect
andretainallradioprogrammingintheeventthatthetrans-
mitterbatteriesdropbelowtherequired9.0volts,orthe
transmitterbatterycaseisremovedduringbatterychanges.If
afterfiveyearsitbecomesnecessarytoreplacethelithium
battery,returnyoursystemtotheHorizonServiceCenterfor
repair(seeaddress,page23).
Memory Backup Screen
IftheMemoryBackupscreenappears,thisindicatesthatany
programmingchangesmadesincethelasttimethesystem
wasturnedonmustbesavedbypressingtheMODEand
CHANNELbuttonsatthesametime.Ifyoudonotsave,the
recentprogrammingchangeswillbelost.Ifthisscreen
appearsforasecondtime,itissuggestedthattheXR-2
transmitterbereturnedtotheHorizonServiceCenterforser-
vicing(seeWarrantyInformation,page23).

TheTravelAdjustfeatureoftheXR-2allowsthemaximum
travelofboththesteeringandthrottleservostobeincreased
ordecreasedineachdirectiontoachievetheexactservo
movementneeded.Theadjustmentrangeisfrom0%to
125%.Thetraveladjustmentisfactorysetto100%forboth
channels.Thetraveladjustmentvaluedisplayedonthe
screendependsonthecurrentpositionofthesteeringwheel,
trigger,ortrimlevertobeadjusted.Thisfeatureisveryuse-
fuleithertomaximizeservotravelortoreduceservoover-
traveltoeliminateservobinding(servomovesfurtherthan
controlmechanismallows),withouttheneedformechanical
linkageadjustment.
Thescreensbelowareaccessedbyturningthewheeltothe
desireddirectiontobeadjusted(leftorright)ormovingthe
triggertotheforwardorbackward(brake)position.

Function
ToaccesstheTravelAdjustfeature,followthestepbelow:
1. Turnonthetransmitterpowerswitch

3. PresstheMODEkeyuntilTRVADJappearsinsmalllet-
tersontheleftsideofthescreen.

TheSubTrimfunctionoftheXR-2isanelectronictrimming
featurethatallowstheneutralpositionoftheservooneither
thesteeringorthrottlechanneltobemoved,whileallowing
theelectronictrimleverforthatchanneltoremaininthecen-
terposition.Thisfeatureisveryusefulasitallowstheservo
arm/wheelpositiontobemovedtohelpwithcontrollinkage
installation,eliminatingtheneedtomakemechanicallinkage
adjustments.
AlthoughtheSub-Trimfunctionisaveryusefulfeature,itis
suggestedthatonlysmallamountsofsub-trimbeusedso
thatnounwanted,non-equalservotraveliscreated.It’ssug-
gestedthatlessthan30pointsofsub-trimbeusedduring
adjustment.Ifmorethan30pointsofsub-trimarerequired,
it’ssuggestedthatamechanicallinkageadjustmentbeper-
formed.

Trim Mode
TheDirectModefunctionoftheXR-2isaccessiblethrough
theuseoftheelectronicthrottleorsteeringtrimlevers,as
wellasthetwoelectronicgriplevers(A&B)locatedonthe
upperportionofthegriphandle.Thisfunctionallowsfor
quicktrimadjustmentofthesecontrols,withouttheneedto
accessthesefunctionsthroughthefourkeypadcontrolkeys.
ToaccesstheDirectTrimModefunction,turnonthetrans-
mitterpowerswitch.Next,movethedesiredtrimlevertobe
adjusted.Theappropriatescreenfortheselectedtrimlever
willbedisplayed.Toadjust,simplymovethetrimleverin
thedesireddirectionuntilthecorrectamountoftrimis
achieved.Oncethedesiredtrimisachieved,thescreenwill
returntotheNormaldisplayscreenafterapproximatelyfive
secondsfromthelasttriminput.IftheMODEorCHANNEL
keyarepressedanytimeduringthefiveseconds,thesystem
willreturntothepreviousscreeninuse.

Thesteeringdualrateadjustment,locatedatgripleverB,
allowsthedualratevalue(maximumservotravel)tobe
increasedordecreasedwithinarangefrom100%through
40%ofthetotaldualratevalueestablishedintheSteering
Ratefunction(page15).Thisfunctionisveryusefulinrace
conditionsasitallowsyoutocustomtailorthesteering
radiusandsensitivityforthecurrenttrackconditions.Please

isthepercentageofthevalueestablishedintheSteering
