Notes on handling
Installation of the unit
•
Select a place w hich is level,dry and neither too hot
nor too cold (between 5oC and 35oC,41oF and 95oF).
•
Leave sufficientdistance between the unit and the TV.
•
Do notuse the unit in a place subject to vibrations.
Power cord
•
Do nothandle the power cord with wethands!
•
A sm all a m ountofpower (1.7 W)is always consum ed
while the power cord is connected to the wall outlet.
•
When unplugging the unit from the wall outlet,always
pull the plug,notthe po w er cord.
To prevent malfunction of the unit
•
There are no user-serviceable parts inside.Ifanything
goes wrong,unplug the pow er cord and consult your
dealer.

Do notinsertany metallic object into the unit.

Do notuse any non-standard shape discavailable on

Note about the copyguard system

DVD VIDE O discs are protected by the copyguard
system.When you connect the unit to your VCR (or
integrated TV/Video system),the copyguard system
activates and the picture may notplay back correctly.
Avoid moisture, water and dust
Do notplace the unit in moistor dusty places.
Avoid high temperatures
Do notexpose the unit to direct sunlightor place it near
a heating device.
When you are away
When you are away on travelor otherwise for an
extended period oftim e,rem ove the plug from the wall
outlet.
Do not insert foreign objects into the unit
Do notinsertwires,hairpins,coins,etc.into the unit.
Do not block the vents
Blocking the vents may dam age the unit.
Care of the cabinet
When cleaning the unit,use a soft cloth and follo w the

Playable and non-playable disctypes are as follo ws:
The DVD Logo is a tradem ark.
•
CD-R and CD-RW discs recorded in the Audio CD,
Video CD,SVCD,MP3 or JPEG form atcan be played
back.How ever,so m e discs may notbe played back
because ofthe disccharacteristics or recording
conditions.
Note thatunfinalized discs cannotbe played back.
•
DVD-R discs recorded with the DVD VIDE O formatcan
be played back.However,so m e discs m ay notbe
played back because ofthe disccharacteristics or
recording conditions.

DVD VIDE O players and DVD VIDE O discs have their
own Region Code nu m bers.This unit can play back
only DVD VIDEO discs whose Region Code nu m bers
include "4."
Exa m ples ofplayable DVD VIDE O discs:
The unit is co mpatible with the PAL and NTSC systems,
and can play back discs whose Region Code nu mbers
include nu mber "4." You can select " NT SC " or "PAL "
while using the PAL/NTSC switch on the rear panel.(For

Uncom pressed digitalaudio,the sa m e formatused on
CDs and m oststudio m asters.
DVD VIDE O supports 2 channels atsam pling rates of
48/96 kHz and quantization of16/20/24 bits.
Audio CD/Video CD is limited to 2 channels at44.1 kHz
at16 bits.
• MPEG Multichannel
A surround audio form atwhich can handle the
augm entative 7.1-channelformat(rare for ho me use),
as w ell as 5.1-channel.
• Dolby Digital
A surround audio formatconfigured with six
channels.Because the "LFE (Lo w-Frequency Effect for
sub-w oofer,etc)." channel,one ofthe six channels,is
an auxiliary channel,this formatis called "5.1-channel
system."
Notall Dolby Digitaldiscs contain six (5.1)channel
inform ation.
• DTS (Digital Theater Systems)
A surround audio formatconfigured with six (5.1)
channelw hich is same as Dolby Digital.Because the
com pression ratio is lower than Dolby Digital,it
provides wider dynamic range and better separation.
Notall DTS discs contain six (5.1)channel
inform ation.
The associated indicator lights up in the display windo w
when playing back a disc.
Note thatwith so m e form ats and/or depending on the
unit’s " DIGITAL A U DIO O U TPU T" setting,digitalaudio
signals m ay notalways transmitted fro m the unit’s

A DVD VIDE O discis co mprised of"titles" and each title
may be divided into "chapters." For exa mple,if a DVD
VIDE O disccontains so m e movies,each m ovie m ay have
its ow n title nu mber,and each m ovie may be divided
into so me chapters.In a DVD VIDE O K ARA OKE disc,each
song usually has its ow n title nu m ber and does nothave
chapters.
(For Audio CD/Video CD/SVCD)
An A udio CD,Video CD or SVCD is sim ply co m prised of
"tracks."
What is Playback Control (PBC) function?
The Playback Controlfunction allows you to enjoy m enu-
driven operation and high-resolution still images w hich
have a resolution four tim es greater than m oving
pictures.
• High-resolution still image display
You can display high-quality im ages four tim es
clearer than m oving pictures.
• Menu-driven playback
A selection m enu is displayed when you start
playing a Video CD or SVCD discwith the Playback
Controlfeature.The selection menu sho ws a listof
nu mbers for selection.So me discs m ay sho w
moving pictures or a divided screen.
You can interact with the screen using the m enu
display to select and play an entry.

driven playback (See page 23 for more inform ation
aboutPBC (Playback Control)).
How to handle discs
When handling a disc,do nottouch the surface ofthe
disc.Since discs are m ade ofplastic,they are easily
da m aged.Ifa discgets dirty,dusty,scratched or warped,
the im ages and sound will notbe picked up correctly,
and such a discm ay cause the player to malfunction.
Label side
Do notda m age the labelside,stick paper to or use any
adhesive on its surface.
Storage
Make sure thatdiscs are keptin their cases.Ifdiscs are
piled on top ofone another withouttheir protective
cases,they can be dam aged.Do notputdiscs in a
location where they may be exposed to direct sunlight,
or in a place w here the hu midity or te mperature is high.
Avoid leaving discs in your car!
Maintenance of discs
Ifthere are fingerprints or other dirtadhering to a disc,
wipe with a soft dry cloth,m oving fro m the center
outwards.
Ifa discis difficult to clean,wipe with a cloth m oistened
with water.N ever use record cleaners,petrol,alcoholor
any anti-static agents.

*Before using the unit,you have to connect the unit to a TV and/or a m plifier.
• Do not connect the AC power cord until all other connections have been made.
•
Connect VIDE O O U T ofthe unit directly to the video inputofyour TV.Connecting VIDE O O U T ofthe unit to a TV via a
VCR m ay cause a monitor problem when playing back a copy-protected disc.You may also have a monitor problem
when connecting the unit to an integrated TV/Video system.
Connection to a conventional TV
You can enjoy playback by sim ply connecting the unit to a TV.
Connect the unit to a TV equipped with stereo audio inputand video inputjacks using the supplied A udio/Video cables.
Connection to a TV equipped with an S-video jack
Ifyour TV has an S-VIDEO input,you can getbetter picture quality by connecting it with the S-VIDEO outputofthe unit
using an supplied S-video cable instead ofconnecting the video inputofthe TV to the VIDE O jack ofthe unit.

Connection to a TV equipped with component jacks
You can enjoy high picture quality by connecting the unit’s C O MPO N ENT VIDE O O U T jacks to the CO MPO N ENT VIDEO IN
jacks ofyour TV with the video cables.
•
Connect " Y" to "Y," "PB" to "PB"(CB),"PR" to "PR"(CR)correctly.
Selecting color system
The unit is co mpatible with the PAL and NTSC systems.Setthe PAL/NTSC switch on the rear panelto match the color
syste m ofyour TV.Make sure thatthe color system ofa DVD VIDEO/video CD/SVCD disclabeled on the package m atches
your TV.How ever,note thatyou m ustchange the switch position while the unit pow er is off (on standby)with the DVD
re moved.Otherwise,the changed setting is noteffective.
Ifyou use a m ulti-color syste m TV,you can play discs recorded on both PAL and NTSC syste ms by setting the PAL/NTSC
switch appropriately.

You can enjoy high-quality audio by connecting the unit’s audio outputto your a m plifier or receiver.
Connect the unit’s AU DIO O UT (LEFT/RIG HT)jacks to any line-levelinputs (such as A U X,DVD,CD,etc.)ofan audio
amplifier or receiver.
To connect to a stereo audio amplifier/receiver
NOTES
• When using the unit with a stereo amplifier or receiver, set "ANALOG DOWN MIX" in the "AUDIO" preferences to "STEREO"
(see page 52).
• If your stereo amplifier or receiver has an AV COMPU LINK terminal, you can use the AV COMPU LINK function. See "AV
COMPU LINK remote control system" on page 59 for details.

You can enhance the playback sound quality by connecting either ofthe unit’s DIGITAL O U T jacks to the digitalinputof
an a m plifier,etc.by using an opticalor a coaxaldigitalcable (optional).The digitalaudio signalfro m a discwill be
transferred directly.Ifyou connect the unit to a Dolby Digitalor DTS decoder or an a m plifier with a built-in decoder using
an optionaldigitalcable,you can enjoy high-quality surround sound.
For a digitalconnection,connect the unit’s DIGITAL O UT (OPTIC AL or C OA XIAL)to the digitalinputofa digitalaudio
device using an opticalor a coaxialdigitalcable.
To connect to a digital audio device
NOTES
• When you make digital connection, we recommend also to make the analog connection, because, depending on discs, no
signal may be output from the DIGITAL OUT.
• When you connect the unit’s DIGITAL OUT to a digital audio device, before using, set "DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT" in the
"AUDIO" preferences correctly according to the connected audio device. If "DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT" is not set correctly, loud
noise may be generated from speakers, causing damage to them. See "DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT" on page 51.
• When you connect the unit’s DIGITAL OUT to a Dolby Digital or DTS decoder (or amplifier with a built-in decoder) to enjoy
surround sound, the unit’s "D. RANGE COMPRESSION" setting in the "AUDIO" preferences is invalid. Make appropriate
surround audio settings on the decoder.
• If your digital audio device has an AV COMPU LINK terminal, you can use the AV COMPU LINK function. See "AV COMPU LINK
remote control system" on page 59 for details.

Turning on/off the unit
NOTE
• Even if you press the DVD STANDBY/ON on the remote control unit or STANDBY/ON on the front panel to turn off the
unit, the unit is not disconnected from the AC power source as long as it is connected to the wall outlet. This state is called
standby mode. In this state, the unit consumes a very small amount of power.

•
A television m onitor may have an im age burned into it if a
static image is displayed for a long ti me.To preventthis,
the unit auto matically activates the screen saver functio n if
a static picture,such as an on-screen display or m en u,is
displayed for over 5 minutes.

Pressing any b uttons on the unit or the rem ote controlunit
will release the screen saver functio n and return to the
previous display.

The unit can remember the position on a discwhere you interruptplayback,and resu m e playback fro m thatposition later.
You can settwo resume m odes (DISC RE SU M E and O N)using the preference display.See page 53 for details abouthow
to setthe resume m ode.

The resume mode is initially setto " O N " w hen you purchased.
•
You can deactivate the resum e mode by setting "RES U ME " on the " OTHERS " preference display to " O FF."
