1-10 Outline
1. Outline
1.1 Outline
RC-02A is an optional board used in Keisoku Giken’s LOAD EDGE/STATION Series
electronic load, capable of measuring ripple/noise according to JEITA (Japan Electronics
and Information Technology industries Association) standard, and making it possible to
measure ripple/noise voltages rapidly.
1.2 Features
・Up to 100MH of nominal frequency range is realized.
・Frequency range can be limited up to 20MHz
・AC ripple and switching ripple can be measured separately.
・Data of “DC voltage + Ripple/Noise voltage“can be measured.
・Setting range of ripple ratio is between 0.0% and 50.0% with 05% step resolution.
・As a method of separating ripple component out of an output waveform of a switching
power supply, a low pass is not being used but detecting the level where ripple
separation ratio is equal to the preset value. Because of this feature, a ripple value
measured by this unit has good data correlation with that measured by an oscilloscope.
(refer to chapter 2 for more detailed description)
Measured data by using this unit may have an error due to a connecting condition of the
signal cable and other use conditions, such conditions resulting from complicated
ripple/noise generation mechanism specific to switching power supplies.
1.3 Option
The following option is available for
Differential cable : DP-100
With this differential probe, the common mode noise that would affect the accuracy of
ripple/noise measurement can be largely reduced.
For detailed information, please contact us directly or our distributor near you.

2.Ripple/Noise measurement
Ripple/Noise measurement with this unit is described.
Measured data by using this unit may have an error due to a connecting
condition of the signal cable and other use conditions, such conditions resulting from

2.2 How to separate ripple component
2.2.1 Typical waveform of switching ripple
Spike Noise of Switching Power Supply
is shown in Fig 2-2. And spike Noise will
be overlapped at the summit of each
Ripple Volt. To make accurate
measurement of RIPPLE Volt, one of the
Typical Approach to remove the Spike
Noise that had been done was to use the
Low Pass Filter to cut off High
Frequency. As the result, only Spike
Noise couldn’t be removed and the
Waveform of RIPPLE Volt. is deformed.
2.2.2 Separation method with pulse width duty ratio
To remove only Spike Noise accurately , RC-02A adopt the Method of Setting a “RIPPLE
RATIO”which is defined as
t / T ×100(%)
where “t“is the Pulse Width of Spike Noise
and ’T’is the Switching Period which is measured
automatically by RC-02A. Please set this RIPPLE
RATIO before starting RIPPLE Measurement.
Setting Range of RIPPLE RATIO is from 0.0% to
50.0% with 0.5% step.
The Advantage of this RIPPLE Measurement is
to remove only Spike Noise for all the measuring
range without deforming the Waveform. And the
measured Data by RC-02A is mostly close to the
read data on Oscilloscope.

Outline 1-13
2.3 How to select proper Ripple Ratio
In this RIPPLE RATIO
Method, Measured RIPPLE
Data changes as you change
the Value of RIPPLE
RATIO. Because as you
increase the RIPPLE
RATIO, Level of RIPPLE
Voltage is gradually going
down, which means that
Measured RIPPLE Data
is the Function of RIPPLE
RATIO.
So it is possible to measure
RIPPLE data by changing
RIPPLE RATIO. But it is
not very practical to
measure such vast data.
So Following is the
explanation how to set up
RIPPLE RATIO so that the
Measured RIPPLE Data
would be most closest to the
Data of an Oscilloscope.
As you can see in Fig.2-4,
there are several Output
Waveforms of Switching
Power Supplies in A1
through A3 , while there are
Measured RIPPLE Data
from B1 through B3 which
are the Measurement
Result of A1 through A3
respectively In B1
through B3 , if Setting of
RIPPLE RATIO is 0%
RC-02A will regard the
Peak of the Output
Waveform as the Peak of
Ripple Volt. However if you
Increase the RIPPLE
RATIO gradually ,you will
find that Measured RIPPLE
Volt. gradually decreases.
Now you see them in more
detail, there a several
slopes of different slope
angles . In the slope (①of B1-3 ), as you increase RIPPLE RATIO , Measured RIPPLE Volt.
decrease steeply. In the slope third slope (③of B1-3) ,on the other hand, the slope is more
gentle. Some of Switching Power Supplies has have such characteristics as shown in ②of
B2-3 which show medium slope between ①and ③of B1-B3.
When you observe these A1-A3 Waveforms by an Oscilloscope, Portions of Thick line (③) of
A1-A3 will be displayed more brighter than any other potions (①or ②of A1-A3) because
the Slope of Spike Noise is so steep that it could be seen darker. And most people regard the
Amplitude of the brighter portion (③of A1-A3) as the RIPPLE Volt As the conclusion how
to select RIPPLE RATIO so as the Measured Data is closest to the Measured data by an
Oscilloscope is to choose RIPPLE RATIO Value which is the closest to the most left edge of

Line (③of B1-B3).which slope is most gentle.
2.4 Affection when AC ripple and switching ripple are overlapped
As for some Switching Power Supplies, the Output Waveform has two fundamental Periods –
Switching Period and AC Period- and they are overlaid shown in Fig.2-5. If you measure the
RIPPLE Volt. with this unit without special consideration to this , Measured RIPPLE Volt. (I)
is apt to be lower than Real RIPPLE Volt. (H). Because this unit is designed to detect only one
Period which is longest. In such a case as shown in Fig.2-5 ,therefore, this unit will not choose
Switching Period (G) but AC Period (F) as a Period to search the peak of RIPPLE Volt.. As you
can see Fig.2-5, once the AC Frequency (F) is selected as the Measuring Period for RC-02A,
there are many Triangle Waveform of RIPPLE and the Peaks of Spike Noise as well as
RIPPLE are fluctuated due to AC Ripple. Because of the existence of the sinking Peaks of
Spike Noise, the Measured RIPPLE Voltage (I) is a little lower than Real RIPPLE (H). If you
select LPF-HPF as the Filter Mode of RC-02A, you will get more accurate RIIPPLE Volt. (But
Measurement Time will be doubled or more because this unit will measure two times; LPF
mode and HPF mode independently and sum the two results )

3. Connections
Please review this precautions herein so as to maximize the capability of this unit to obtain
accurate data as much as possible.
Refer to an manual of LAOD EDGE/STATION Series electronic load to be used to make sure
the position of the INPUT connector.
3.1 Connection to an INPUT connector
INPUT connector
A signal to be measured can be inputted through this connector. As the cable, a coaxial
cable with 50 ohm impedance should be used.
・Do not apply voltage higher than max. rated input voltage (±500V) to this
connector, which might cause damages of the equipment and/or electric shock to
the operator.
・When an optional differential probe, DP-100, is used, the max. input voltage is
±200V.
・While a DUT is connected, do NOT connect or disconnect a cable to the connector
of the electronic load, because the operator might get a electric shock when the
operator touches the metal portion of the BNC connector.
