Units Covered By This Manual
The contents of this manual apply to products with serial number prefixes listed
in “Products Covered by This Document” on page5. A unit’s serial number can be
found on a plate attached to the unit, in the form “xxxAyyyy” where
“xxxA” is the prefix, and “yyyy” is the suffix. A prefix is the same for all
instruments of the same revision. The suffix is assigned sequentially and is
unique to each individual instrument of the revision.
A unit manufactured after the printing of this manual may have a serial number
prefix that is not listed on the title page. This indicates that the unit is different
from those described in this manual. Contact the nearest Sales and Support
Office listed in “Service and Support” on page51 if information regarding the
changes is not provided with the new unit.

Regulations
This chapter provides safety guidelines you must follow to help ensure your
protection and the protection of the equipment. Familiarize yourself with
all these guidelines before setting up or using the Keysight 5519A/B Laser
Head.
The Keysight 5519A/B Laser Head is a low power (less than 1 mW) helium-neon
laser, the Keysight 5519A/B Laser Head will not cut metal or even burn paper.
Therefore, it is not necessary to use special safety equipment such as tinted
glasses or shielding. To avoid possible injury from prolonged exposure, do not
stare directly at the laser beam or the beam reflected from a polished surface.
(It is safe to look at the dots of light reflected on an unpolished surface.)
The Keysight 5519A/B Laser Head is a Laser Class 2 product certified as
conforming to Bureau of Radiological Health Regulations 21 CFR1 1040.10 and
1040.11, and per IEC2 60825-1:2007. The instrument and this manual should be
inspected and reviewed for safety markings and instructions before operation.
Please refer to the summary of Safety Considerations in the front matter of this
document.
The above regulations may also apply to the end product into which the
Keysight 5519A/B Laser Head will be designed. Care must be taken to insure
that the end product complies with all applicable national and local laser safety
regulations.
The Keysight 5519A/B Laser Head is also a Safety Class 1 product, designed
and tested in accordance with international safety standards, including HD

and IEC 348.

This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency
energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the
instructions in this manual, may cause interference to radio
communications. As temporarily permitted by regulation, it has not
been tested for compliance with the limits for Class A computing
devices pursuant to Subpart J of Part 15 of FCC Rules, which are
designed to provide reasonable protections against such interference.
Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause
interference, in which case the user, at his own expense, will be
required to take whatever measures may be required to correct the
interference.

General Safety Precautions
Before turning on the power to any component of the Keysight 5519A/B Laser
Head, make sure it is plugged into a protective grounded socket.
Tampering with a protective (grounding) conductor or disconnecting the
protective earth terminal causes a potential shock hazard. Grounding one
conductor of a two-conductor outlet is not sufficient protection.
If you think the electrical protection is impaired, make sure the component is
not used until a qualified service technician has checked it and, if necessary,
made the appropriate repairs.
If an autotransformer is used for voltage reduction, make sure the common
terminal is connected to the earth terminal of the power source.
Use only fuses with the correct rating and specified type. Do not use a repaired
fuse or a short-circuited fuse holder. This could cause a shock or fire hazard.
NOTE
Keysight lasers contain a permanent magnet. The field strength of the
Keysight laser magnet does not exceed 5.25 milligauss at a distance of
460 cm (15 ft) from any point on the surface of the packaged Laser as
specified in Standard: IATA Dangerous Goods:2011, and therefore meets the
IATA requirements for air shipment with “Magnetic Material” caution label.
WARNING
The field strength ofthe Keysight laser magnet may, in some
circumstances, pose a danger to individuals with cardiac
pacemakers or similarmedical devices. Such individualsmust take
precautions appropriate to their condition.
WARNING
Electrical supply: 100-240 Vac, 50/60 Hz, 65VA Max. Main
supply voltage fluctuations for the Keysight 5519A and 5519B
Lasers are not to exceed 10 percent of the normal supply.

Using Components Safely
When using Keysight 5530 Laser Calibration System electronic
components—5519A/B Laser Head, E1735A USB Axis Module, E1736A
USB Sensor Hub, E1737A Material Sensor, and E1738A Air sensor—
observe the following guidelines:
•Before connecting a component, make sure the component and cable are in
good condition.
•If a sensor cable is cut, the cable must be replaced before use.
•Be sure the cables do not present a hazard to people working in the area.
Also, place all cables so they will not be damaged by equipment or people.
•Hold a cable by its connector (the plug, not the cord) when connecting or
disconnecting it.
•Never force a connector into a port. If they do not join easily, they do not
match. Make sure the connector and port match and that the connector is
properly aligned.
•After inserting a connector into a port, do not twist or turn it.
•Do not open the casings on the electronic components.

1LASER ON
The amber indicator alerts the operator when the 5519A/B Laser Head is
capable of emitting a laser beam.
2SIGNAL
The green indicator glows when a sufficient measurement signal is
returned to the measurement receiver assembly in the 5519A/B Laser
Head.
3 Exit (Upper) Aperture
The laser beam exits from this port.
When OTHER is selected (see the description of the Turret Ring below), the
laser beam is reflected back to the Exit Aperture.

4 Exit Aperture Control
The shutter is located behind the Upper Aperture. Three positions can be
selected:
Open − used during normal operation
Reduced Aperture − used during alignment of measurement axes
Closed − the shutter should be in the closed position whenever the
laser is not in use
5 Lower Aperture
For all non-straightness measurements, the laser beam is reflected back to
this port in the laser by the measurement optics, and then is directed to the
receiver assembly.
When OTHER is selected (see the description of the Turret Ring below), the
laser beam is reflected back to the Exit Aperture.
6 Lower Aperture Control
The lower aperture is normally open. When the measurement axes are being
aligned, a target can be rotated into the aperture to facilitate alignment.
7Turret Ring
The Turret Ring is used to select the type of measurement to be performed.
For all measurement types except straightness, the Turret Ring is set to
OTHER. The laser beam exits at its preset power through the Exit Aperture,
and the measurement beam is reflected back to the lower aperture.
When the Turret Ring is set to STRAIGHT, the laser beam both exits from
and returns to the 5519A/B Laser Head through the Exit Aperture. The beam
is reduced to approximately 30% of its preset power. The straightness
measurement optics reflect the return beam to the Exit Aperture.

1 Power Connector connects to the AC power input.
2Power Switc hactivates the 5519A/B Lase Head when set to the ‘I’
position, and begins the warm-up sequence that enables laser emission.
3Port for Keysight 10882B Laser Cable, which connects the laser to the
E1735A USB Axis Module of the Keysight 5530 Laser Calibrator System.
4Laser On (amber)
This LED indicator alerts the operator when the 5519A/B Laser Head is
capable of emitting a laser beam.
5Ready (green)
This LED indicator blinks on and off to indicate that the laser is in the process
of warming up, beginning about halfway through the laser warm-up period.
It glows steadily when the 5519A/B Laser Head is ready for use. Warm-up
typically takes about 10 minutes.
