Option B14, B16 and B17 – 4 GHz Analysis Bandwidth
This document provides detailed instructions for the installation of the 4 GHz Analysis Bandwidth
upgrades for the N9042B UXA Signal Analyzer.
Please be sure to read this entire document before attempting to perform this upgrade. Then, be
sure to perform the steps in this procedure in the order that they are listed so that the installation
will complete properly, and the instrument will function as desired when completed.
Compatibility
This instrument option is compatible with all revisions of the instrument hardware and firmware.
However, it is always recommended that the instrument firmware revision be updated after the
hardware installation process is completed.
Instrument Calibration
Since parts in the signal path of the instrument will be replaced and a new major assembly will be
added, a complete performance verification of the instrument will be required in order to ensure
that it meets its published specifications once this upgrade is completed.

ESD Information
ESD Information
Protection from Electrostatic Discharge
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage or destroy electronic components. All work on electronic
assemblies should be performed at a static-safe workstation. Figure 1 shows an example of a
static-safe workstation using two types of ESD protection:
— Conductive table-mat and wrist-strap combination.
— Conductive floor-mat and heel-strap combination.
Both types, when used together, provide a significant level of ESD protection. Of the two, only the
table-mat and wrist-strap combination provides adequate ESD protection when used alone. To
ensure user safety, the static-safe accessories must provide at least 1 megohm of isolation from
ground.

These techniques for a static-safe workstation should not be used when working on circuitry
with a voltage potential greater than 500 volts.

ESD Information
Handling of Electronic Components and ESD
The possibility of unseen damage caused by ESD is present whenever components are transported,
stored, or used. The risk of ESD damage can be greatly reduced by paying close attention to how all
components are handled.
— Perform work on all components at a static-safe workstation.
— Keep static-generating materials at least one meter away from all components.
— Store or transport components in static-shielding containers.
Test Equipment Usage and ESD
— Before connecting any coaxial cable to an analyzer connector, momentarily short the center and
outer conductors of the cable together.
— Personnel should be grounded with a 1 megohm resistor-isolated wrist-strap before touching
the center pin of any connector and before removing any assembly from the analyzer.
— Be sure that all analyzers are properly earth-grounded to prevent build-up of static charge.

For more information about preventing ESD damage, contact the Electrical Over
Stress/Electrostatic Discharge (EOS/ESD) Association, Inc. The ESD standards developed by this
agency are sanctioned by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Always handle printed circuit board assemblies by the edges. This will reduce the possibility of
ESD damage to components and prevent contamination of exposed plating.

Upgrade Contents
This upgrade kits includes enough parts so that all versions of the N9042B instrument can be
successfully upgraded with the 4 GHz Analysis Bandwidth option. Because of that, there will be
some parts that will not be needed. The main determinator for this is the version of the A23 IF Mux
assembly in the instrument. Instruments with the latest version of the A23 IF Mux will not require
the 9135-6665 Gain Equalizer and the semi-rigid cable required for it.

Initial Instrument Functionality Check
Power on the instrument and allow it to complete its boot up process. Verify that there are no
instrument messages that would indicate that there is an issue with either the instrument hardware
or software. If there are any issues, investigate and fix the problem before continuing with this
upgrade.
License Key Retrieval and Installation
1. Follow the instructions on the enclosed License Entitlement Certificate to redeem the new
option license key for the instrument being upgraded.
2. Once the new license keys have been redeemed follow the installation instructions that come
with the license file to install it into the instrument.
3. Verify that the license has been installed by pressing System, Show System and verify that the
R40, R20, R15 and R10 options are present in the listed options.

A23 IF Mux Revision Check
A23 IF Mux Revision Check
While the instrument is still powered on check to see what version of the A23 IF Mux is installed in
the instrument by pressing System, Show Hardware. Find the IF Mux-10GHz entry, as seen in
Figure 2, and record the Part # below.

Use the part number of the assembly to determine which configuration the instrument has:
If the A23 IF Mux is part number N9041-60163 or N9041-60193, the instrument is
Configuration A.
If the A23 IF Mux is any other part number, the instrument is Configuration B.
The instrument configuration will be used when it comes to installing the parts needed to connect
the 4 GHz bandwidth output of the A23 IF Mux to the input of the new A22 Ultra-Wideband Analog
IF assembly.

Hardware Disassembly
The following is a list of the sheet metal parts and assemblies that need to be removed before
installing this upgrade. If instructions are needed for any of these, see Chapter 20, Assembly
Replacement Procedures in the N9042B Service Guide.
Assembly and Sheet Metal Removal
1. Remove the instrument Dress Cover and A1 Front Panel assembly.
2. Referring to Figure 3, remove the following sheet metal:
—Rear Panel
—Top Brace
—Card Cage Brace and Support Brackets
—Front End Stiffener and Support Brackets
—Chassis Side, Right - Outer

3. Referring to Figure 4, remove the Chassis Rear Brace.

4. Referring to Figure 5, remove W43 from the A11 Band Switch P1.

5. Referring to Figure 6, remove W43 from the A13 Narrowband Downconverter J2 and carefully
remove the cable from the instrument. This cable will not be reused.

6. Referring to Figure 7, remove W107 from the A16 Reference J711 and from the A2 25 MHz
Analog IF J300. Cut any nylon wire ties attaching the cable to the instrument and remove the
cable. This cable will not be reused.

7. Referring to Figure 8, remove the three 50 ohm terminations connected to the A23 IF Mux. The
terminations will not be reused.

8. Referring to Figure 9, disconnect the four coax cables from the A21 Wideband Digital IF.

9. Referring to Figure 10, use the two board extractors (1) to carefully remove the A21 Wideband
Digital IF (2) from the instrument.

ODI Cable Installation
The new parts supplied with this upgrade that will be needed in this section are listed in Table 2.
ODI Heatsink Removal
1. Referring to Figure 11, remove the four short panhead screws (1) and the one long panhead
screw (2) attaching the ODI heatsink (3) to the A21 Wideband Digital IF (4).

2. Remove the ODI heatsink (3) from the A21 Wideband Digital IF (4), making sure that all the
thermal pads (1) and gasketing (2) come with it, as seen in Figure 12. Discard the heatsink,
the gasketing, and the thermal pads.

ODI Cable Installation
The connector of the ODI cable provided in this kit with the blue tab on it needs to be installed on
the A21 Wideband Digital IF assembly. These types of connectors can either have a blue tab or an
orange tab. The blue tab indicates a receiver, while an orange tab indicates a transmitter, so it is
critical that the cable be installed in the correct location on the A21 assembly, as seen in Figure 13.

3. Use the blue pull tab (1) on the new ODI cable (8121-3405) connector to lift the locking tab
(2) of the connector up, as seen in Figure 14.

4. Position the cable and connector over the blue labeled connector on the A21 Wideband Digital
IF, as seen in Figure 15.

5. Lower the cable and connector onto the connector on the A21 Wideband Digital IF, as seen in
Figure 16.

6. Slide the connector to engage the forward connector, as seen in Figure 17.

7. Press the cable connector lock down to lock it into place, as seen in Figure 18.

8. Properly route the ODI cable so that it does not get pinched when the new heatsink is put into
place, as seen in Figure 13.
9. Referring to Figure 19, install the new ODI heatsink (3) with four new panhead screws (1)
(0515-2332) and the one original long panhead screw (2) onto the A21 Wideband Digital IF
assembly (4). Torque all the screws to 9 in-lbs.

Be sure that all the thermal pads and gasketing are properly in place on the underside of the
heatsink, as seen in Figure 12, before placing the new heat sink in position.

Reinstall A21 Wideband Digital IF
1. Referring to Figure 20, reinstall the A21 Wideband Digital IF, carefully moving any cables out
of the way, especially the ODI cable (2) that was just installed. Use the card extractors (1) to
lock the assembly into place.

2. Referring to Figure 21, reinstall the four coax cables to the A21 Wideband Digital IF, as listed in
Table 3.
