Feature details
Using the default mouse buon acons is a
great way to reduce the strain of mousing.
By holding the mouse simply for poinng,
without worrying about clicking, you can
7
substanally reduce the eort and repe-
on required of your mousing hand.
Many users will simply assign a commonly
used keyboard acon to a pedal, such as
Backspace or Tab. However, avoid using
acons that require so much repeon that
you create exhauson and potenal over-
use of your feet and lower legs.
Simple macros are also a great use of the
Savant Elite2. Commonly used commands
for parcular applicaons (e.g. Ctrl-F1).
Frequently-used shied characters (e.g. the
@ symbol using a tradional keyboard) can
also be assigned to a pedal as a simple
macro.
Advanced features
A number of advanced features are availa-
ble, but it is recommended to avoid these
unl you have successfully programmed
standard key acons and simple macros.
- Slow output. If normal programmed output
from the foot switch is too fast for the com-
puter, “slow output” can be selected.
- Inserng “delays” between keystrokes. The
foot switch can be programmed with one or
more 0.5 second delays.
- Separate press/release commands. For
special applicaons, you can send a “press
key” or “release key” only, or you can pro-
gram “press key” acons separately from
“release key” acons.
System requirements
A USB port is required. Device is compable
with but doesn’t require USB 2.0 or USB 3.0.
Savant Elite2 uses generic HID (human inter-
face device) drivers provided by the oper-
ang system. It can be operated and pro-
grammed without any special drivers in
most environments supporng USB devices,
including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, An-
droid, and Chrome operang systems.
In Play Mode it emulates a generic keyboard
and mouse, in Programming Mode it emu-
lates a generic keyboard and removable
disk. Programming Mode requires generic
OS support for a removable disk and the US
English keyboard driver to be selected. For a
non-Windows OS, a text-eding program or

app that can edit and save a le as “plain
text” or “simple text” is required. Most
word processing and text eding programs
have this capability.
Supported operang systems
Windows: Full feature support is provided
under Windows 7, Windows 8 and earlier
versions which support USB. The graphical
“no-install” programming app (SE Cong
App) is provided also for Windows 7 & 8.
Most features are also supported under
Linux, Android, and Chrome.
Macintosh systems (OS X 10.5 & newer):
Most features are supported. However, OS
X does not allow one USB device to modify
another, so a pedal programmed as modi-
er key can only be used in combinaon
with another pedal on the same device, not
with a key on a keyboard. However, a pedal
programmed to perform Cmd-b, for exam-
ple (which will typically toggle bolding), will
operate correctly.
Installaon
Play Mode
Be sure your Savant Elite2 device is in “Play
Mode” before connecng for the rst me
to any parcular USB port. Look on the
underside for the labelled recessed slide
switch. Waterproof models do not have a
slide switch and will default to Play Mode
as long as a pedal isn’t pressed while it is
being plugged in.
The rst me you connect your Savant
Elite2 to a computer or tablet, the system
will install generic “HID” drivers provided
by the operang system. The red LED will
come on briey while the automac instal-
laon process begins, and within a short
me the steady green light will indicate
“Play Mode” installaon is nished.
If you inadvertently connect it in “program
mode,” simply change the slide switch to
“play mode” and wait for the self installa-
on to complete, as indicated by steady
illuminaon of the green LED. If the green
LED is ashing, check that the program-
ming switch is in “play” mode. If the red
LED stays on, see “Troubleshoong.”
8
If you wish to re-program the device, rst
check that the factory conguraon is
working , then refer to “Programming ”
below. Details for programming are provid-
ed in the separate “Programming Guide”
which is stored on the device and is also
available for download at
hp://www.kinesis-ergo.com/support/
technical-support/manuals-drivers.
Programming
Acvang “Programming Mode” creates a
virtual removable disk (VRD) named
KINESIS-FP on your computer or tablet.
That virtual disk contains the SE2 Cong
App for Windows, plus a PDF SE2 Pro-
gramming Guide. The laer has extensive
details and examples. The VRD also con-
tains a folder named “Acve” in which a
text le named pedals.txt resides.
Pedals.txt contains the complete congura-
on instrucons and is where you program
the Savant Elite2 device. Tips for accessing
the VRD in dierent operang systems are
provided below.
Programming Mode using slide switch
Turn over your Savant Elite2 device and,
using a pointed pen or pencil to move the
recessed slide switch from the “Play” to the
“Program” posion. The rst me this is
done, the red LED will be on briey while
the system auto-installs the Program
Mode. Then the red light will go out and
the system opens the virtual removable
drive (hereaer called the VRD).
NOTE: DO NOT PRESS ANY PEDALS WHILE
WAITING FOR VRD TO OPEN. IF YOU DO SO
AND THE DEVICE STOPS WORKING, JUST
UNPLUG IT, WAIT 15 SECONDS , THEN RE-
CONNECT THE DEVICE.
When the VRD is open, the green light will
begin ashing to indicate Programming
Mode is acve. At this me, mouse acons
from the pedal are inacve. You should
either get the “Autoplay” popup (Windows
7) or your “My Computer” screen will open
(Windows 8). For Mac systems, a
“Removable Volume” disk icon will appear
on your desktop (upper right).

When you have found the VRD on your
computer, you will see the Programming
Guide PDF le that is stored there. You will
also see the “Acve” folder, which includes
the conguraon le, named pedals.txt, as
well as a backup of the default pedals.txt
le.
When the VRD is closed, any changes that
have been made and saved in pedals.txt
become acve.
Closing Programming Mode
When you have nished viewing or eding
pedals.txt, be sure to save the le to the
Acve folder if you made changes. Close
the VRD by moving the slide switch back to
“Play.”
NOTE: DO NOT PRESS ANY PEDALS WHILE
WAITING FOR VRD TO CLOSE. IF YOU DO SO
AND THE DEVICE STOPS WORKING, JUST
UNPLUG IT, WAIT 15 SECONDS , THEN RE-
CONNECT THE DEVICE.
Alternate Programming Mode Acvaon
If you have a waterproof model or prefer
not to use the slide switch, you can acvate
Programming Mode by holding down any
pedal briey while plugging the unit in to
the USB port. Or you can hold a pedal
briey while starng or re-boong your
computer.
To close the VRD aer saving any changes
in pedals.txt, simply unplug and replug
your device.
Programming by eding pedals.txt
At this point you should be using the Pro-
gramming Guide found on the virtual re-
movable drive, or downloaded from the
Kinesis website (see link page 8). However,
a brief overview of the programming pro-
cess is provided here.
Using almost any word processing (text
eding) program, you can edit one or more
of the inputs available on various Savant
Elite2 products. Each pedal or jack can
produce one or more keyboard or mouse
acon or combinaons of acons. Ped-
als.txt contains basic instrucons, but more
details (as well as examples which can be
copied and pasted into pedals.txt) are in-
9
cluded in the Programming Guide. Save
pedals.txt as “plain text” or “simple text”
when you are done eding.
(see Programming Guide provided on the
virtual removable drive of the device for
details).
Health and safety ps
New Users, have realisc expectaons!
If you currently have an injury to your
hands or arms, or have had such an injury
in the past, it is important that you have
realisc expectaons of your input device.
You should not expect an immediate im-
provement in your physical condion simp-
ly because you are using a new input de-
vice. Your physical trauma has built up over
months or years, and it may take a number
of weeks before you noce a dierence. At
rst, you may feel some new fague or
discomfort as you adapt to your Kinesis
foot pedal.
Foot pedal is not a medical treatment!
The Kinesis Savant Elite2 foot pedal is not a
medical treatment or a substute for ap-
propriate medical treatment. If any infor-
maon in this guide seems to contradict
the advice you have received from a health
care professional, please follow your health
care professional’s instrucons.
Adjusng pedal force
On the underside of the pedal is a small
plasc screw which
may be gently
turned to adjust
pedal force in the
range of approxi-
mately 3.5 to 4.5 lbs.
Pedals are normally
factory congured
for low force.
Molded marks on
the cartridge indi-
cate "+" for higher
force and "-" for lower force. Using a coin
(penny or dime) or sloed screwdriver,
turn the screw gently to change the force.
Important note: Minimal force (full "-"
adjustment) reaches a hard stop. If force is
used once the stop is felt, the plasc screw
Fig 1. Underside of pedal

head may crack and prevent further force
adjustments. The full range to achieve max-
imum force is approximately 10 full turns.
When maximum force (full “+” adjustment)
is reached, you will hear a "click" with each
rotaon. Do not turn further aer hearing
the rst click.
Cleaning & maintenance
Occasional external cleaning is recom-
mended by wiping the pedals and electron-
ics enclosure with a damp cloth. Alterna-
vely, a cloth dampened with rubbing alco-
hol (70% isopropanol) may be used though
any silk-screened graphics on the electron-
ics enclosure may be damaged over me
by solvent eects. Savant Elite2 products
are not designed to be sterilized or to be
used in a sterile environment.
Access to the inside of the pedal for occa-
sional internal cleaning may be accom-
plished by removing the snap-in cartridge
(see Fig 1 and instrucons, next page).
Disassembling the pedal
(removing cartridge)
The cartridge on the underside of each
pedal may be removed for inspecon,
cleaning, re-
pair or re-
placement of
internal ele-
ments. For
pedals mount-
ed on a base,
the two Phillips
mounng
screws must be
removed be-
fore removing the pedal cartridge by
squeezing the release tab (see “release
tab” in Fig 1, above).
Once the cartridge has been removed (Fig
2), the spring, switch, and/or USB cable
may be inspected or replaced. Note: water-
proof switches cannot be serviced or re-
paired, other than to remove the enre
cartridge for inspecon or cleaning.
Disassembling the cartridge
When removed from the pedal, the assem-
bled cartridge will look like Figure 2. In non-
waterproof pedals, it may be further disas-
10
sembled to replace the T-lever, the spring/
nut assembly, or the switch & cable assem-
bly (which are soldered together). The
components of the cartridge are shown in
the exploded view (Fig 3). To remove the
spring, rst adjust pedal to maximum force
(see above). The spring and nut should
then li out of the spring tunnel (Fig 2)
together. The
spring and nut
are glued to-
gether at the
factory but can
easily become
separate by
handling. If this
happens it is
not a defect
but more care
is required
during the re-
assembly process.
The T-lever is press-ed into the switch
well aer the switch has been snapped into
posion. Be sure it is pressed down unl
the shoulder below
the hinge point is
resng on the rim
of the switch well
(Fig 3). The switch
snaps into the
switch well and the
cable is press-ed
through the strain
relief posts (Fig 3).
Re-assembling the
pedal
(re-installing car-
tridge)
Before re-installing
the cartridge, check that the spring, force-
adjusng screw and nut, and the switch are
correctly posion as shown in gure 2.
Insert the cartridge parally into the un-
derside of the pedal with the two small
tabs and cable poinng to the rear where
the cable exits the foot switch. Align the
spring to capture the spring guide post in
the pedal top (Fig 4), then lower the car-
tridge unl the large release tab snaps into
place.

operaon by the foot and the pedals have
been funconally tested to one million

mal usage consists of intermient pressing.
Technical support
Troubleshoong
Visit our web site, www.kinesis.com, for
addional Savant Elite2 troublingshoong
ps, and select Technical Support.
Status lights
If a problem is suspected, the rst place to
check is the status lights. If the green LED
displays a steady light, the unit is operang
normally in Play Mode. If there is no LED
illuminated, the system is not powered. If
only the red LED is illuminated, the unit is
not ready and requires aenon.
If the green LED is ashing, the unit is in
Programming Mode. Please see the chap-
ter “Installaon, Programming Mode” for
instrucons on programming the device.
Programming errors
If the device becomes unresponsive, it is
possible errors have occurred in the cong-
uraon le, or a pedal was pressed during
the period when the VRD was either open-
ing or closing.
The rst thing to try is simply unplug and
replug your device into its USB port. If that
doesn’t solve the problem, trying acvang
Programming Mode using the slide switch,
or by holding down a pedal while plugging
in the unit.
If you are successful in opening the VRD
and can open the Acve folder, try to de-
lete the pedals.txt le or move it (cut &
paste) to a dierent locaon. Switching
back to play mode or power cycling
(replugging) the unit will regenerate a de-
fault pedals.txt le in the acve folder.
See page 7 for the default acons of your
device. If these steps don’t restore the
funconality of the device, contact Kinesis
Technical Support for further assistance.
