3. Purpose of the operating manual
This operating manual describes the KLARO Tiger fixed-bed small sewage treatment
plant. It is aimed at the system operator and provides all technical information from
operation to maintenance and must therefore be read before the system is put into
operation!
All safety instructions must be observed!

This operating manual describes the KLARO Tiger fixed-bed small sewage treatment
plant. It is aimed at the system operator and provides all technical information from
operation to maintenance and must therefore be read before the system is put into
operation!

1.4 Liability
Any liability of the manufacturer is excluded in the event of:
1. Non-compliance with, or inadequate use of, the information in this
manual,
2. Use of spare parts or parts in the system that are not approved by
KLARO GmbH,
3. Improper operation of the treatment plant,
4. Removal of, tampering with, or bypassing of safety devices,
4. Unauthorised changes to the system,
5. Improper execution of maintenance and spare parts installation.
Unauthorised modifications to the system or operation of the system outside the

5. Safety
This section contains information on safety measures and residual risks. Read this
chapter carefully before using the plant to ensure safety in handling of the plant as far
as possible.
1.5 Hazard warnings
To ensure safety, all persons coming into direct contact with the plant must take note
of the contents of this documentation.
1. It is prohibited to use the system for a purpose other than that described
by the manufacturer.
2. Locally applicable labour and safety regulations and laws must be followed
even if they are not explicitly listed in this manual. The same applies to
environmental legislation.
3. If the operator detects faults or dangers, the manufacturer or the
responsible maintenance company must be informed immediately.
4. Safety devices must never be removed or bypassed during normal
operation of the machine. Safety devices may be temporarily bridged or
disabled only by maintenance staff during repair and maintenance.
5. When handling chemical substances, contact with chemicals should be
avoided where possible. Before beginning work with these substances, the
instructions on the package must be read and followed.
6. If the use of personal protective equipment (safety shoes, safety glasses,
gloves, ear protection, etc.) is required, it must be ensured that it will be
used. Defective or damaged personal protective equipment must be
replaced immediately with properly functional protection.
7. Work on electrical installations may only be performed by qualified
personnel.
8. All safety instructions and warnings on the machine must be kept in easily
legible condition.
9. Hot parts must not come into contact with explosive or flammable
chemicals.
10. Do not place objects filled with liquids on electrical cabinets; spillage of
liquid can cause short circuits.
11. The plant must not be operated under the influence of alcohol (be careful
about any residual alcohol from the previous day!) or of medication
affecting perception and responsiveness.
12. Before any maintenance and cleaning work, the plant must be de-
energized.

1.8 Manufacturer's declaration
The manufacturer's declaration which has been individually issued
for your small wastewater treatment plant in accordance with EN
12566 Part 3 is enclosed with the delivery documents. Please file
these with your documents required by wastewater regulations.
1.9 Preface
We are pleased that you have decided to invest in a Tiger compact small wastewater
treatment plant.
Please refer to this operating manual before commissioning the wastewater treatment
plant. It contains information on the operation of the plant.
Please check the product for any transport damage on delivery.
These must be immediately notified in writing to your dealer or KLARO GmbH.

1.10 Warranty
The plant has been dimensioned and manufactured according to the state of the art.
The product has left the factory in a faultless condition. As part of the warranty,
defects due to manufacturing or the material will be repaired free of charge. These
defects must have demonstrably occurred in spite of correct installation and
compliance with the conditions of use in accordance with these installation
instructions. After delivery, please inspect the controller for any damage. In the event
of defects, please contact your contractors/dealer immediately with a description of
the defect and the plant identification.
Our terms and conditions are binding.

7. Product description
1.11 Application
CAUTION
The KLARO fixed bed plant is designed for the treatment of
the entire household wastewater.
The introduction of other wastewater
can lead to biological operating problems or damage to the built-
in components in the container.
The introduction of other wastewater, for example,
wastewater from restaurants and/or business entities, etc., is
permissible if this use was already known and taken into
account during the design of the plant.
Biocides, toxic or biologically incompatible substances must
not enter the plant as they interfere with bacteria that are
important for wastewater treatment and cause problems in
the biological process.
Please consult your KLARO team in advance.
Operation in accordance with our operating and
maintenance instructions is essential for compliance with
regulatory treatment requirements. You will
find these
instructions below.
The declaration of conformity does not replace a building permit
or permission under the water act by the authorities. This usually
requires prior planning of the wastewater plant by a specialist
office or an expert.

1.12 Functional description
The Tiger compact consists of a total of 3 treatment stages distributed over two
zones:
1. Primary sludge storage / pre-treatment
2. Secondary sludge storage
3. Fixed bed

Primary sludge storage / pre-treatment
The domestic wastewater which contains solids first enters the primary sludge
storage / pre-treatment after leaving the house. There, the settleable and floating
solid particles are separated and stored until disposal. Since the system is very
compact, this chamber should generally be emptied 2 - 4 times a year.
Secondary sludge storage
The wastewater which is now free of solids moves from the primary to the
secondary sludge storage, entering the lower part of the secondary zone via a
submerged overflow. The secondary sludge storage is used to store secondary

Primary sludge storage / pre-treatment

Fixed bed
Wastewater contains a lot of bacteria. In the fixed bed chamber of the KLARO
Tiger plant, these microorganisms are firmly bonded to special growth supports
made of particularly microbiologically suitable material and activated for
wastewater treatment. For this purpose, the fixed bed must always be covered
with water.
Air-lifters are positioned in the fixed bed. The oxygen supply of the
microorganisms is ensured by air being supplied through the air-lifters. Here, the
compressed air is blown into the lower area of the air-lifters, mixed with water and
pushed upwards. The deflector plates in the upper areas of the air-lifters divert the
water, enrich it with oxygen and distribute it over the fixed bed.
By blowing in the air, the wastewater is further mixed biologically, which also
ensures that the fixed bed blocks are rinsed regularly. The rinsed sludge settles in
the secondary zone.

CAUTION
The plant must always be ready for operation. A permanent
power supply must be ensured for this purpose. In addition, free
drainage without any backing up must be guaranteed.

8. Machine technology
The machine technology consists of a wall console, an indoor cabinet or an outdoor column.
The control cabinet or wall console contains an air compressor. The air compressor is
connected by a hose to the air lifters in the secondary zone of the plant and supplies the air
needed to oxygenate the microorganisms.
1.13 Selection of installation location
CAUTION
When selecting the location for the machine technology, the
following must be taken into account:
•Select a cool and well-ventilated
•room for the console or control cabinet.
•Installation height above the highest possible water
•level in the container, in order to avoid flooding and
•water ingress exceeding the freeboard
•in case of accident.
•Avoid direct sunlight on the outdoor columns!
•Increased temperatures in the switch cabinet have
•a negative effect on the service life of the electrical
fittings.
•
The switch cabinet, and in particular its ventilation
openings, must not be covered and must be freely
accessible for maintenance work.
•Noise is generated during operation!
•There may be a continuous noise (comparable with an oil
heating blower or refrigerator).
1.14 Connection of the machine technology to the wastewater treatment
plant
The machine technology is connected to the built-in components in the wastewater
treatment plant (tank) via a hose.
CAUTION
For this purpose, an empty pipe has to be laid between the
machine technology and the container.
•Diameter DN 150
•Lay the empty pipe as straight as possible
•Use bends up to a maximum of 30°
•Do not use any 90° bends
•
Lay the pipe at an incline towards the wastewater
treatment plant so condensate in the pipe can drain
•
When laying the hose line, ensure there is sufficient
reserve.
•Gas-
tight closure of the empty pipe to prevent odour
nuisance or destruction of electrical and mechanical built-

8. Machine technology
The machine technology consists of a wall console, an indoor cabinet or an outdoor column.
The control cabinet or wall console contains an air compressor. The air compressor is
connected by a hose to the air lifters in the secondary zone of the plant and supplies the air
needed to oxygenate the microorganisms.
1.13 Selection of installation location

9. Commissioning
1.15 Preparation for commissioning
ATTENTION
Ensure that all connection tasks at the machine technology and in
the wastewater treatment plant have been completed.
The wastewater treatment plant must be filled with water up to
the drain!
1.16 Initial commissioning
Place the air compressor on the wall console, in the indoor cabinet or the outdoor
column.
Connect the air compressor with the hose line and then connect it to a socket. Once
the air compressor is connected, it compresses the ambient air and then feeds it to
the air-lifters.
DANGER
Ensure that the air compressor is connected to a suitable
socket with an adequate power supply.
Otherwise, electric shocks may occur.

ATTENTION
Ensure that all connection tasks at the machine technology and in
the wastewater treatment plant have been completed.
The wastewater treatment plant must be filled with water up to
the drain!
1.16 Initial commissioning
Place the air compressor on the wall console, in the indoor cabinet or the outdoor
column.
Connect the air compressor with the hose line and then connect it to a socket. Once
the air compressor is connected, it compresses the ambient air and then feeds it to

DANGER
Ensure that the air compressor is connected to a suitable

10. Operation
1.17 General information
Operation must be set up in such a way that
•Threats to the environment are not to be expected
•
The existence or intended function of the plants are not
impaired or endangered
•Bodies of water intended for discharge are not polluted or
otherwise adversely affected beyond the permitted extent
•
No enduring offensive odours arise
1.18 Introduction of foreign substances
Only domestic wastewater or similar wastewater may be fed into
the plant. Other substances may cause adhesions, blockages and
other damage.
In addition, foreign substances also cause malfunctions and impair
treatment performance.
Cleaning agents pollute the environment. Use them sparingly!
Also pay attention to the dosing instructions of the
manufacturers.
Food residues and greases have a negative impact on treatment
performance. They should not be poured down the sink drain, but
•belong in the organic waste!
CAUTION
In particular, the following may not enter the plant:
•Rainwater from roofs and courtyards,
•Extraneous water (e.g., drainage water),
•Residues from livestock in solid and liquid form,
•Commercial or agricultural wastewater, if it is not
comparable to domestic wastewater,
•Chemicals, pharmaceuticals, mineral oils, solvents,
•Cooling water,
•Large particles in the form of food scraps, plastics, and
sanitary products, coffee filters, bottle caps, and other
household items,
•Milk and dairy products,
•Drain water from swimming pools,
•Larger amounts of blood.
If large quantities of fats or vegetable oils are produced, it is recommended to pre-
treat the greasy wastewater in a grease separator prior to entering the wastewater
treatment plant (caution: faeces may not enter the grease separator!).

11. Maintenance
1.19 General
DANGER
Specific dangers arise during the maintenance of the small
wastewater treatment plant. Trained maintenance personnel are
specifically trained to avoid and prevent dangers.
You should not carry out any maintenance without special
training!
We recommend that you conclude a maintenance contract with a
specialist maintenance company.
This is the only way to ensure proper operation!
The maintenance reports must be retained for at least 5 years.
1.20 Maintenance intervals
We recommend that plant maintenance is carried out at least
once a year.
1.21 Maintenance scope
The following work has to be carried out as part of
maintenance:
•
Inspection of the operating log, including
determination of regular operation
•
Check of the air filter of the air compressor and the
supply and exhaust air openings of the switch cabinet
and outdoor column.
•
Maintenance of the air compressor according to
manufacturer's instructions (see Appendices!).
•Functional check of the air-lifters.
•
Functional check of the power failure detector (for
plants with power failure detector).
•Check of sludge height in the primary zone.
•Arrange for sludge
removal if necessary (operator
task).
•
Carrying out of general cleaning, e.g. removal of
residues.
•Check of the structural condition of the plant,
•
Check adequate ventilation of the entire plant
(chimney effect via inlet and discharge pipe).
•Check fixed bed for sludge.
