Before You Begin
CAUTION: Risk of product damage. Do not install the bath over open floor joists. The basin area
requires no additional support when the subfloor is level and square with the stud framing. Install the
bath on an adequately supported, level subfloor. Use shims for additional support if the subfloor is
uneven.
CAUTION: Risk of product damage. Wall surround sections are equipped with foam backing that is
used to bring the back of the wall into contact with the regular stud framing. This foam is not packing
material. Do not remove it.
CAUTION: Risk of property damage. Do not add silicone sealant unless directed otherwise. The
inappropriate use of silicone sealant on caulkless models may trap moisture and could result in mold,
leakage or mildew.
CAUTION: Risk of product damage. Bath units shipped in only one bath per carton are shipped with
the braces in the closed position. Units shipped in multipack cartons may have one or more set of
braces disconnected from the apron. Connect the apron braces on each unit before removing it from
box.
CAUTION: Risk of product damage. Do not lift the bath from the carton using the apron brace. Lift
the bath at multiple points from the rim.
IMPORTANT! For bath-only installations, silicone sealant is required at the seams of the walls and the
bath. Caulking according to the manufacturer’s instructions may also be required if a shower door is
added.
NOTE: Clear silicone sealant is recommended. Use of acrylic or other caulks is not recommended.
NOTE: If your bath is shipped with a liner, keep the liner in place until construction is complete. If a liner
is not available, position a clean drop cloth or similar material in the bottom of the bath.

Before You Begin (cont.)
This bath is designed for alcove installations.
Do not remove the old fixture before you unpack and inspect the new unit.
If remodeling, measure the existing framework before removing the old fixture to ensure the new
unit will fit. Make sure that the drain is in the correct location.
Confirm that there is adequate mounting and connection space for the water supply and drain
chosen for the installation.
Upon receipt, check for shortages or damage. Report any shortages or damage immediately.
Store the bath and wall surrounds in a safe place until you begin installation to avoid damage.
The apron panel is not removable on bath units.

IMPORTANT! All dimensions are nominal. The stud opening tolerance is plus 1/4″(6 mm) and minus 0.
Carefully measure your fixture before determining enclosure size. When a fire rated wall is specified,
dimensions are to the inside of the wall board. Some shimming between the stud frame and the fixture
may be required. Dimensions given in the roughing-in information are crucial for proper installation.
Construct the framing and plumbing accurately.
NOTE: If a firewall is required, roughing-in dimensions will have to increase according to the thickness of
the firewall material. Stud opening dimensions must be measured toward the exposed side of the wall
material.
NOTE: If installing this unit to a masonry wall, make provisions for plumbing connections. Construct a
separate frame wall a minimum of 6″(15.2 cm) from the masonry wall.
1. Prepare the Site (Framing Construction)
Refer to the Roughing-In section for dimensions.
Carefully measure your fixture before determining enclosure size. Some shimming between the stud
frame and the fixture may be required. Dimensions given in the Roughing-In section are crucial for
proper installation. Construct the framing and plumbing accurately.

Prepare the Site (Framing Construction) (cont.)
The bath and optional wall surrounds can be installed in an alcove directly to the framing studs or
installed over wallboard or other water-resistant material. When installing over wallboard or other
water-resistant wall material, the framing dimensions must be increased to accommodate the
material thickness.
If a firewall is required, roughing-in clearances must increase according to the thickness of the
firewall material. Stud opening dimensions must be measured toward the exposed side of the wall
material.
When units with wall surrounds are installed over drywall, plaster, or other water-resistant wall
material, the nailing-in flanges should be covered with finish molding.
An access panel should be installed at the drain end of the bath. This access panel is not shown.
If installing this unit with a shower door, refer to the shower door manufacturer’s instructions for
any special framing considerations. It may be appropriate to add studs for pivot shower door
support.
If installing a unit with wall surrounds to a masonry wall, make provisions for plumbing
connections. For the plumbing end wall, construct a separate frame wall a minimum of 6″(15.2 cm)
from the masonry wall. For the other walls, use 2x2 furring strips to provide stud locations.
If installing a bath-only unit to a masonry wall, make provisions for plumbing connections and
finish wall installation. A 2x2 furring strip around the inside edge of the bath may be used to secure
the bath in place. Locate the furring strip at the height needed for the attachment clips or roofing
nails, whichever will be used.
2. Framing Construction
The bath with apron must be attached to the walls on three sides. Attach the bath with the supplied
attachment clips or with large-head roofing nails. The attachment clips or nails limit the freedom of
movement for the sides and ends of the bath. The wall attachment is not intended to be load bearing.
Subflooring must be installed. The bath must be positioned to allow clearance for drainage through the floor
joists or slab and to allow convenient plumbing installation. Studs must be positioned roughly as shown for
the attachment of clips or the fastening of the nailing-in-flange. Other stud locations are optional except that
the stud location must meet the load-bearing requirements of local building codes. Studs must also allow for
the installation of the plumbing fixtures and any shower door. Locate the shower door studs as required by
the shower door manufacturer.
Install the Framing
NOTE: Refer to the Roughing-In section for dimensions.
For installations with wall surrounds, ensure that the outer stud is positioned for the vertical
nailing-in wall flanges at 37-1/2″(95.3 cm) from the back wall. The outer edge of the stud should
align with the edge of the flange.
For a bath only installation which has the nailing-in flanges in place on the apron, ensure that the
outer stud is positioned for the apron flanges at 37-1/2″(95.3 cm) from the back wall. The outer
edge of the stud should align with the edge of the nailing-in flange.
For a bath only installation with broken nailing-in flanges, ensure that the outer stud is positioned
for the apron flanges at 36″(91.4 cm) from the back wall. If a corner is present, the outer edge of the
stud should align with the outer edge of the bath.
If the apron nailing-in flanges are not going to be used or have broken off, install three evenly
distributed 2x4 blocks just behind the apron location. These will prevent the apron from being
damaged and may be used to secure the apron behind a baseboard. Measure the bath for the
required clearance behind the apron and for the location of the blocks.
Construct 2x4 stud framing for your particular installation according to the Roughing-In section.

Framing Construction (cont.)
For an installations using a shower door, refer to the shower door manufacturer’s instructions for
any special framing considerations.
Ensure that the framing for each stud is plumb and square to within 1/8″(3 mm). Shimming will be
required if tolerances are not met.
If possible, construct an access panel in the end wall to allow clearance for servicing the faucets and
drain.
For units with above-the-floor drains, ensure that the drain piping can pass through the wall and
that the load bearing requirements of the wall are satisfied. Modify the framing or raise the subfloor
as required to obtain clearance.
NOTE: For installations with wall surrounds, fiber or other soft insulation may drop down into the
caulkless seal channel. This could cause wicking of water from the channel into the insulation. This could
induce mold, leakage, or mildew. Cover or seal any loose material that could dip into the channel.
NOTE: For units with wall surrounds, the installation of accessories that require backing or support is not
recommended. Such installations could void the warranty.
For bath-only installations, add any backing or support needed for shelving, grab bars, towel bars
or other accessories. Refer to the accessory manufacturer’s instructions.
Flooring Construction
IMPORTANT! Squeaking may develop if the bath is installed over a subfloor other than plywood. In
order to prevent squeaking place a pad between the bath and the subfloor. The recommended pad
material is a spun bonded polyester landscape fabric, or spun bonded house wrap material. Do not use
roofing felt for this purpose.
NOTE: The rectangular cutout for the through-the-floor drain should be sized to fit the chosen drain
assembly. The drain connection should be made directly under the overflow drain. Leave room to connect
the piping.
For units with through-the-floor drains, cut the hole in the floor for the drain line.
Ensure that the apron nailing-in flanges can be secured to studs or install three 2x4 blocks just
behind the apron location.
Verify that the subfloor is flat and level.
Level the Floor
NOTE: Do not use gypsum cement or drywall compound for this application. They will not provide an
acceptable, durable bond.
The bath supports must rest directly on a level subfloor.
Build a dam that will keep the flooring material in the desired area. Be sure to dam the area for the
drain.
Spread and level a layer of cement or mortar on the subfloor where the bath supports will be set.
Allow the material to cure.
Remove the dam.

3. Install the Rough Plumbing
NOTE: Provide access to all plumbing connections to simplify further maintenance.
NOTE: The drain line should be located before the unit is installed. The overflow and drain must be
installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Locate the drain line and trap using the
dimensions given in the applicable diagram in the Roughing-In illustrations section.
Locate rough plumbing for the drain according to the rough-in dimensions.
NOTE: If plumbing is to be installed on the unfinished stud wall, install the supplies after the module is
installed.
Position the plumbing according to the roughing-in information. Cap the supplies and check for
leaks.
Strap the supply connections to the stud framing.
If possible, provide an access at the back of the plumbing wall for servicing the supply and waste
piping.
Install the shower valving according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not install the trim at
this time.

4. Position the Bath
CAUTION: Risk of product damage. Do not lift or move the bath using the apron or apron braces.
If your bath is shipped with a liner, keep the liner in place until construction is complete. If a liner
is not available, position a clean drop cloth or similar material in the bottom of the bath.
Install the drain and overflow assembly to the bath according to the drain manufacturer’s
instructions. Do not connect the trap at this time.
CAUTION: Risk of product damage. Ensure that the apron braces are attached prior to installation.
Position the bath in the alcove and verify that it is properly positioned in respect to the intended
finished wall.
If the bath is not level, shimming may be required. Remove the bath from the alcove and shim
using metal, hardwood, or other durable material. Reposition the bath and check for level again.
Repeat until the bath is level.
When the bath is level, consider whether or not to use an optional mortar/cement bed.
Installation with Optional Mortar or Cement Bed
NOTE: Do not use gypsum cement or drywall compound for this application, as they will not provide an
acceptable, durable bond.
Remove the bath from the alcove.
If present, remove any landscaping fabric.
NOTE: The bath supports must rest directly on the subfloor.
Build a dam to keep the flooring material clear of the drain area.
Spread a 2″(5 cm) layer of cement or mortar on the subfloor except where the bath feet will be set.
Remove the dams, and position a piece of plastic drop cloth material on top of the cement or mortar
bed.
Move the bath into position.
Verify that the bath is level and resting on all supports.
Clean the bath to reduce the risk of damaging the surface.
If not already present, place a clean drop cloth or other similar material into the bottom and over
the outside edge of the bath. Be careful not to scratch the surface of the unit.

5. Secure the Bath to the Framing
If your bath is shipped with a liner, keep the liner in place until construction is complete. If a liner
is not available, position a clean drop cloth or similar material in the bottom of the bath.
Secure the Apron
For units which have the nailing-in flanges installed on the apron, drill two 1/16″(2 mm) pilot
holes through each nailing-in flange and into the stud. Then, fasten the flanges to the stud using
large-head roofing nails or screws.
NOTE: If the apron blocks were not installed earlier, It may be possible to remove the bath and install
them now.
For units for which the nailing-in flanges have broken off from the apron, ensure that the apron is
held in place by the wooden blocks installed previously. If planning to install baseboard at the
apron, drill pilot holes and fasten the apron to the wooden blocks.
Attach the Bath to the Studs
The bath can be attached using the attachment clips provided, or large-head roofing nails.
Check at the recommended clip or nail locations to verify that the studs are within 1/8″(3 mm) of
the bath. Shim if necessary.
Use Attachment Clips
Refer to the Roughing-In section for attachment clip locations.
At the side of the stud, position the bottom lip of the clip under the flange of the bath as shown in
the detail.
Slide the clip into place between the center of the stud and the bath.
Use a pliers to bend the tab of the clip over the bath flange.
NOTE: Install large-head roofing nails or flathead screws to secure the clips to the studs. If hammering a
nail, use caution to avoid hitting the bath.
Install the clip with a flat-headed screw or nail.

Install large-head roofing nails or other large-head fasteners over the top of the flange at each stud
location to pin the flange to the studs as shown.
Make sure the fastener heads will not interfere with the installation of the wall surrounds or
finished wall material.

6. Prefit the Wall Surrounds
Place the back wall on the bath. Ensure that the back wall tabs are engaged in the bath alignment
channels as shown in the illustration.
Temporarily install a roofing nail or equivalent over the top of the nail flange into the center of a
stud. Do not drive the nail in so far that it interferes with the remaining wall.
Position both end walls ensuring that the wall interlock pins are engaged and the end wall tabs are
engaged in the bath alignment channels as shown in the illustration.
Do not secure the walls to the stud framing at this time.
Verify that the assembled wall surround is resting properly on the bath. If required, remove the
roofing nail at the back wall.
Verify that the end walls are flush with the edge of the bath. If required, push or pull the end walls
into position.
While assembled, check fit and verify that the surround walls are properly aligned with the studs at
the upper and vertical nailing flanges.
If required, add shims to bring the studs into contact with the wall surround.

7. Cut Holes for Valves and Spout
For Units with Wall Surrounds Only
Holes for the valve handles and spout must be cut in the plumbing end wall. Refer to the manufacturer’s
instructions for the necessary hole sizes. Verify that any escutcheon, flange, or cover plate is large enough to
cover the hole for the component.
Lay out and mark the location of the mixing valve and shower on the back surface of the surround
wall.
Drill 1/4″(6 mm) pilot holes at the marked locations.
Clean the bath to reduce risk of surface damage.
Verify that there is a protective covering in the bath.
IMPORTANT! If using a round hole saw or other rotary tool to cut the holes, cut the holes from the front
or finished side of the wall. If using a saber saw or other reciprocating saw with a blade that cuts on the
pull stroke, cut the holes from the rear of the wall. If using a hand-held jig saw or other saw that cuts on
the push stroke, cut the holes from the front of the wall.
Use a hole saw of the correct diameter to carefully drill the fitting holes.
Clean any debris from the bath to reduce the risk of surface damage. Be careful not to scratch the
surface of the product.

8. Apply Silicone Sealant
IMPORTANT! If you encounter any installation or performance problems, please don’t hesitate to contact

NOTE: A short bead of clear silicone sealant placed next to the bath nailing-in flange can compensate for
out-of-plumb walls and water spray at the flange area. The sealant is hidden when the wall surrounds are
installed and no maintenance is required. The bead of sealant should be between 1/4″(6 mm) and 3/8″(1
cm) in diameter and it should be between 3″(7.6 cm) and 4″(10.2 cm) long. Mildew-resistant 100% clear
silicone sealant is recommended.
Clean and dry the outer few inches of the bath nailing-in flange at the point where the end walls
will be installed.
Apply a 3″(7.6 cm) to 4″(10.2 cm) bead of silicone sealant at each outer end of the wainscotting
where the end walls will be installed.
Do not allow the sealant to cure before the end walls are installed.

9. Secure the Wall Surrounds
Attach the end wall to the back wall by engaging the wall interlocks and wall tabs.
Remove the temporary nail at the top of the back wall flange.
CAUTION: Risk of property damage. Wall surrounds must rest within 1/32″(1 mm) (the thickness of
a credit card) from the bath to ensure proper water management and to prevent leakage.
Check to be sure all walls are seated firmly on the bath and that the back wall interlocks are
engaged.
Verify that the front edges of the end walls are flush with the front edge of the bath.
If a gap exists, pull the end walls slightly forward to eliminate the gap.
CAUTION: Risk of product or property damage. If using screws rather than nails, do not overtighten
the screws. Excessive tightening can damage the flange.
Use large head roofing nails or flat head screws at the dimples on the nailing flange in order to
secure the wall surrounds to the studs. Secure both end walls first starting at the bottom and
moving up the sides.
Secure the flanges across the top of the wall panels at every stud location.
Finish the Installation of the Wall Surround
NOTE: A gap between the edge of the wall surround and the finished wall, when sealed, helps to reduce
the possibility of water seeping into the wall material. Apply the water-resistant wall material over the
nailing-in flanges leaving a 1/8″(3 mm) gap between the wall surround and the wall material.
Cover the framing around the wall surrounds and the shower bath with water-resistant wall
material.
Seal the joints between the bath and the finished wall material with silicone sealant. Allow the
sealant to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

10. Install the Finished Wall
For Bath Only Installations
NOTE: Apply the wall material over the bath flange leaving a 1/4″(6 mm) gap between the bath rim edge
and the wall material. This gap helps to reduce the possibility of water seeping into the wall material.
Brush all dust and debris from the bath flange.
Cover the framing around the bath with water-resistant wall material.
Seal the 1/4″(6 mm) gap between the bath rim edge and the water-resistant wall material with
silicone sealant. Allow the sealant to cure according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Apply the finished wall material over the bath flange leaving a 1/4″(6 mm) gap between the bath
rim edge and the wall material.
Install the finished wall over the water-resistant wall material.
11. Complete the Plumbing Installation
For all Installations
CAUTION: Risk of property damage. Ensure a watertight seal on the bath drain and overflow.
Connect the drain to the trap according to the drain manufacturer’s instructions.
Apply silicone sealant to all openings around valves and outlets before installing the cover plates or
flanges.
Install the faucet trim according to the faucet manufacturer’s instructions.
Install the bath spout according to the faucet manufacturer’s instructions.
Remove the protective covering from the basin of the bath.
Verify that the showerhead is not installed.
Open the hot and cold water supplies to the bath.
Check the operation of each faucet or control. Make any required adjustments according to the
manufacturer’s instructions.
Run the water to flush any debris from the supply lines.
Close the shower controls and faucets.
Install the showerhead and flange according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Check the operation of the showerhead. Make any required adjustments according to the
manufacturer’s instructions.

Complete the Plumbing Installation (cont.)
Close the valves.
Close or plug the bottom drain.
Run the water to fill the bath to the overflow.
Check all drain connections for leaks. Repair if necessary.
Close the valves and drain the bath.
12. Finish the Installation
Install Optional Shower Door
Install the shower door according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Install Other Accessories
CAUTION: Risk of property damage. Do not make additional holes in the wall surround or bath
without adding adequate sealant. Holes made to install any accessories may cause leakage. The
improper installation of accessories may void the warranty.
NOTE: For installations with wall surrounds, install the shower curtain rod above the top of the wall
surrounds.
Install any accessories according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Verify that any holes in the finished wall are properly sealed.
When construction is completed, check for leaks.
13. Clean Up
CAUTION: Risk of product damage. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
CAUTION: Risk of product damage. Do not use any acid-based cleaners on fixtures made of VikrellTM.
Wipe your bath with a soft cloth after each use to prevent a build-up of soap and scum.
Sterling recommends the following products for regular (weekly) cleaning: Spic and Span®, Top

.
Avoid cleaning products that contain acetone, ethyl alcohol, amyl or ethyl acetate, sodium
hypochlorite, toluene, or phenol. These products can damage the finish.
Extreme heat such as that generated by cigarettes or portable heaters can damage Vikrell surfaces.
Do not use such items near your bath.

Avant de commencer

emballage groupé peuvent avoir un ou plusieurs jeux de pièces de renforts déconnectés du bandeau.
Connecter les pièces de renforts du bandeau sur chaque unité avant de les retirer de la boîte.

Ne pas retirer le vieil appareil avant d’avoir déballé et examiné le nouveau.
Dans le cas d’une rénovation, mesurer l’espace existant avant de retirer l’ancien appareil sanitaire
pour vérifier que votre nouvel appareil puisse s’y ajuster. S’assurer que le drain soit en position
correcte.
S’assurer qu’il y ait un support adéquat et un espacement de connexion pour l’alimentation d’eau et
le drain choisi pour l’installation.
Au moment de la réception, vérifier s’il y a des pièces manquantes ou endommagées. Reporter
immédiatement tout endommagement ou toute pièce manquante.
Conserver la baignoire et les murs avoisinants dans un endroit protégé en attendant de commercer
l’installation pour éviter tout endommagement.
Le bandeau n’est pas amovible sur les unités de baignoire.

La baignoire et les murs avoisinants optionnels peuvent être directement installés en alcôve sur les
montants du cadre ou installés sur un panneau de revêtement ou tout autre matériau
hydrorésistant. Lors de l’installation sur un panneau de revêtement ou un autre matériel
hydrorésistant, les dimensions du cadrage doivent être augmentées en fonction de l’épaisseur du
matériau.
Si un pare-feu est requis, les espaces de raccordement devront augmenter en fonction de l’épaisseur
du matériau du pare-feu. Les dimensions d’ouverture des montants doivent être mesurées vers le
côté exposé du matériau du mur .
Si l’on installe l’unité sur cloison sèche, plâtre, ou autre matériau hydrorésistant, les brides de
cloutage doivent être revêtues d’un moulage de finition.
Un panneau d’accès devrait être installé au côté du drain de la baignoire. Ce panneau d’accès n’est
pas montré.
En cas d’installation de cet appareil sanitaire avec porte de douche, consulter les instructions du
fabricant de la porte de douche pour toutes spécifications particulières du cadrage. Il pourrait être
approprié de rajouter des cales pour supporter le pivot de la porte de douche.
Dans le cas d’installation d’unité à murs avoisinants sur un mur en maçonnerie, prendre des
dispositions pour les raccordements de la plomberie. Pour la plomberie, construire un cadre séparé
à un minimum de 6″(15,2 cm) du mur en maçonnerie. Pour les autres murs, utiliser des tasseaux de
2x2 pour simuler l’emplacement des cales.
Uniquement dans le cas d’installation de baignoire sur un mur en maçonnerie, prendre des
dispositions pour les raccordements de la plomberie et l’installation du mur fini. Un tasseau de 2x2
autour du rebord interne de la baignoire peut être utilisé pour sécuriser celle-ci. Localiser le tasseau
à la hauteur nécessaire pour la fixation des clips ou des clous à toiture selon le cas.
2. Construction du cadrage
La baignoire avec bandeau doit être fixée aux murs sur trois côtés. Fixer la baignoire en utilisant les clips
fournis ou clous à large tête pour toiture. Les clips d’attache ou clous limitent la possibilité de mouvement
des côtés et extrémités de la baignoire. L’attache du mur n’est pas conçue pour être un support de poids.
Un sous-sol doit être installé. La baignoire doit être positionnée de manière à permettre le drainage à travers
les charpentes exposées ou dalles et pour faciliter l’installation de la plomberie. Des cales doivent être
positionnées à peu près à l’endroit d’attache des clips ou de fixation de la bride. D’autres emplacements de
cales sont optionnels mais doivent être conformes aux codes de bâtiment locaux. Des montants peuvent aussi
permettre l’installation de la plomberie et toute porte de douche. Localiser les montants de la porte de
douche comme indiqué par le fabricant.
Installer le cadrage
REMARQUE : Se référer à la section plan de raccordement pour les dimensions.
Pour des installations avec murs avoisinants, s’assurer que le montant extérieur soit positionné pour
les brides de cloutage verticales à 37-1/2″(95,3 cm) du mur arrière. Le rebord extérieur du montant
devrait s’aligner avec le rebord de la bride.
Uniquement pour une installation de baignoire munie de brides de cloutage sur bandeau, s’assurer
que le montant extérieur soit positionné pour les brides de bandeau à 37-1/2″(95,3 cm) du mur
arrière. Le rebord extérieur du montant devrait s’aligner avec le rebord de la bride de cloutage.
Uniquement pour une installation de baignoire avec brides de cloutage cassées, s’assurer que le
montant extérieur soit positionné pour les brides du bandeau à 36-1/4″(91,4 cm) du mur arrière. Si
un angle est présent, le rebord extérieur du montant devrait s’aligner avec le rebord extérieur de la
baignoire.
