VIDEOPHONE INSTALLATION GUIDE
1) CHOOSE AN INSTALLATION LOCATION
The Videophone is designed to be installed at a single location, and physically secured in place to minimise risk of damage to
the Videophone, and risk of injury to the user. It is not designed to be a portable, hand held unit.
Physical Installation Considerations
•The Videophone should be located where the user can comfortably sit and talk/listen for long periods, and where
they can easily reach the Videophone screen to dial and answer. So consider a table, desk, buffet, or wall, close to
where the user normally spends their time.
•Position it so that the users face is captured by the Videophone camera during a video call.
•The Videophone should ideally be within 1 to 4 metres of the user when on a call.
•The Videophone should be located where it is unlikely to be knocked or grabbed if the user stumbles, where it
cannot cause injury to the user should it be knocked or grabbed, and where it is safe from spills.
•If wall mounted, ensure that the Videophone does not protrude into a walkway or frequently trafficked area.
•Environment must be suitable for computer equipment: Temp < 35 deg C, Humidity < 80%.
•Install Videophone in a quiet location, with minimal background noise.
•Install well apart from other electronic equipment, and from sources of Radio Frequency Interference.
•If you intend to use Auto Answer, ensure the Videophone is positioned with a good view of the room.
•To optimise video call quality ....
othe users face should be well lit, with no strong light sources behind them
oensure their is no activity behind the user, ie. no trees waving in the wind, no people, no traffic, etc.
•For wall mount ....
otry to get at least 2 screws into a wooden stud, or use fasteners of comparable strength
odepending on location, the mounting strength should be sufficient to support a user who inadvertently
leans on or grabs the Videophone for balance
•Carefully plan where you will run cables, to avoid creating a trip hazard, and to prevent cables from overheating ....
opower cable to modem, power cable to Videophone
oCAT6 cable from modem to Videophone (if applicable)
Wi-Fi or CAT6?
A Wired connection using CAT6 cable will provide the best video call performance, but Wi-Fi is often more convenient.
The following must be taken into account when deciding on Wi-Fi or CAT6, and on the location of your Videophone.
•If connection to router via CAT6 cable is possible and viable, it should be your first choice.
•If considering Wi-Fi, check the Wi-Fi signal strength at the proposed Videophone location using the Wi-Fi signal
strength indicator on your smartphone, or even better, a Wi-Fi Analyser App, eg. ....
ofor Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&hl=en
for iPhone: https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/wi-fi-sweetspots/id855457383
oIMPORTANT: Wi-Fi signal strength at Videophone location must be > 90% ( > -50dBm )
oWi-Fi signal requires Line Of Sight. It will bounce off walls and other objects, and penetrate through some
walls, but it will not penetrate metal, or objects such as fridges and appliances. We highly recommend
putting the Wi-Fi router and Videophone into the same room.
ochoose Wi-Fi Channel 1, 6 or 11 (use Wi-Fi Analyser to determine the least used Channel)
•If Wi-Fi cannot be used, and CAT6 has to be wired ....
omaximum CAT6 cable length is 100m
oavoid running CAT6 parallel to AC power cables (keep at least 1m apart)
•Verify Internet / network speed is at least 2Mbps / 1Mbps download / upload ....
(or for calls to hearing impaired who will lip read, ensure at least 2Mbps / 2Mbps)
oFor Wi-Fi, you can use a speedtest App on your smartphone, eg.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.zwanoo.android.speedtest&hl=en
oFor wired CAT6 connection, browse to www.speedtest.net on your home PC

VIDEOPHONE INSTALLATION GUIDE
Considerations for ADSL2+ Internet
•IMPORTANT: If connecting via Wi-Fi, the Wi-Fi signal strength at the Videophone must be > 90%.
•It is recommended to install the ADSL2+ modem at the primary telephone socket, ie. the socket that the telephone
wiring from the street comes into. Other sockets may suffer from low quality or problematic house wiring, and
therefore reduce the ADSL2+ signal quality. However, if you are obliged to use a different phone socket in order to
place the modem closer to the proposed Videophone location, ensure that the network speed meets the minimum
speeds listed above. Alternatively, connect the modem to the primary phone socket, and run CAT6 cable to the
Videophone.
•If the premises has an existing Alarm System, or an Emergency Pendant, or similar, a Mode 3 telephone socket will
likely be in place. If so, the following options are available when installing the Konnekt modem/router ....
oInstall the modem/router at the Mode 3 socket:
▪This is the preferred choice, provided it can supply a strong Wi-Fi signal to the Videophone
installation location, or you are happy to run CAT6.
▪This option requires only a single filter/splitter, which gets installed at the Mode 3 socket. There
should be no need to install an ADSL filter/splitter at other phone sockets, because a correctly
wired Mode 3 socket is wired in series ahead of other sockets.
oInstall a central ADSL Splitter
▪This must be installed by a qualified telecommunications technician, and usually costs around
$300-$400. It will provide you with a dedicated phone socket for ADSL2+, which you should
request be placed close to the intended Videophone location.
▪This additional cost is not included in your standard Konnekt installation fee, which is why
installing the modem/router at the Mode 3 socket is preferred, if possible.
•The modem should be in the same room as Videophone or within line-of-sight for good Wi-Fi, as detailed in previous
section "Wi-Fi or CAT6?".
•Some equipment can cause interference that affects the modem or WiFi operation. Try to install the modem in an
isolated location, away from any other electronic equipment. Try to run ADSL, phone, and CAT6 cabling away from
existing power cabling, and away from electronic equipment. Potential interference sources include set-top boxes,
TVs, DECT phones, microwaves, Bluetooth devices, or any device that uses the 2.4GHz frequency.
Considerations for Mobile Broadband Internet
•IMPORTANT: If connecting via Wi-Fi, the Wi-Fi signal strength at the Videophone must be > 90%.
•The Mobile Broadband modem (sometimes call a "hotspot") must be installed in a location that ....
ohas a strong mobile network signal
ois close enough to the Videophone to provide a strong Wi-Fi signal to the Videophone
OR
is in a position that enables you to wire CAT6 from modem to Videophone
•Place the modem where it shows the strongest mobile signal, 75% or more, eg. at least 3 bars out of 4 ....
onear a window is often best
otin roofs can degrade mobile network signal
onote that some portable hotspots have a misleading single LED indicator for signal strength
Try to run CAT6 cabling away from existing power
cabling, and away from electronic equipment. Potential interference sources include set-top boxes, TVs, DECT
phones, microwaves, Bluetooth devices, or any device that uses the 2.4GHz frequency.
Considerations for NBN / Cable / Other Internet
•IMPORTANT: If connecting via Wi-Fi, the Wi-Fi signal strength at the Videophone must be > 90%.
•The modem should be in the same room as Videophone or within line-of-sight for good Wi-Fi, as detailed in previous
section "Wi-Fi or CAT6?".

Ideas for Installation Location
Wall mounted on Tilt / Pan bracket, near or just above
a small (narrow) desk or table.
The Videophone will be protected from spills and is
unlikely to be knocked or grabbed. The Videophone
position and angle can be adjusted for different
seating positions, and wiring can easily be run on or
behind the wall.
Desk mounted on a solid table / desk / buffet near
where the user usually sits.
The table has to be a bit lower than you might think, so
that it aims at users face. A table height of 40-50cm is
usually ideal.
Near the existing telephone is sometimes a good
location.
Suits customers who are still mobile, and who are happy
to go to their normal phone location to make and answer
calls.
