your mains power is switched off. This also applies to the installation of piggybacks. Serious
electrical shock hazards can exist during all installation, repair, and maintenance operations
on this product. Therefore, always unplug the power cable and any other cables which
provide external voltages before performing any work on this product.
Earth ground connection to vehicle’s chassis or a central grounding point shall remain
connected. The earth ground cable shall be the last cable to be disconnected or the first

1/ 1/ Scope
This documentation addendum is provided as a supplement to the main TRACe-LP1 user’s guide reference SD.DT.G74.
It details the use of the 3G/4G cellular modem option of the Kontron TRACe-LP1 LoRaWAN™ gateway, as well as the
WIFI option. The 3G/4G modem and WIFI options have to be specified at the time of the ordering of the gateway.
The order codes for the gateway with network options are mentioned in the table below. A -C suffix is added if the
secure Cloud broker option is ordered.
Network option Europe North America
None (only wired ethernet) TRACE-LP1-EU TRACE-LP1-US
3G/4G cellular modem only TRACE-LP1-EU-2-0 TRACE-LP1-US-2-0
WIFI only (client or hotspot) TRACE-LP1-EU-1-0 TRACE-LP1-US-1-0
3G/4G cellular modem and WIFI TRACE-LP1-EU-5-0 TRACE-LP1-US-5-0

2/ 3G/4G cellular modem function
2.1. Ethernet Cabling
This option adds a 3G/4G cellular modem connectivity to the Kontron TRACe-LP1 base product which offers, by
default, a wired Ethernet connection. The TCP/IP MQTT messages can then transit through a 3G/4G wireless link to
reach the MQTT server.
The modem is an LTE modem Cat6 , 3G/4G, including LTE advanced. A SIM slot is available to host the MiniSIM module
provided by the telecom operator selected by the customer.
In addition, the 3G/4G cellular modem option is equipped with a GPS antenna input which can be optionally used for
the geolocation of the gateway. The SMA connector position A5 should be used if such geolocation function is needed.

www.kontron.com // 11
3/ 3G/4G cellular modem antennas and SIM card installation
Two antennas are provided for LTE modem operation and should be connected to the SMA positions A4 and A6, as
shown in the figure below on the right side.
A SIM card of format MiniSIM, provided by the telecom operator, must be inserted from the maintenance face of the
Kontron TRACe-LP1. To access the maintenance connectors, the maintenance plate must first be unscrewed. The
maintenance plate is located on the opposite face of the operational face featuring the main antennas, power supply
and Ethernet connectors. The figures below show how to insert the MiniSIM card. Once the SIM is inserted, the
maintenance plate must be screwed back on the maintenance face.

4/ 3G/4G cellular modem software setup
Use the procedure described in the TRACe-LP1 user’s guide SD.DT.G74 to log in as root in the Linux operating system
hosting the LoRa to MQTT gateway. Then perform the following steps illustrated below.
A. Open the new mobile broadband connection wizard
B. Set up a Mobile Broadband Connection overview

5/ WIFI function
This option adds WIFI connectivity to the Kontron TRACe-LP1 base product which offers, by default, a wired Ethernet
connection. If configured in client mode, the TCP/IP MQTT messages can then transit through a WIFI wireless link to
reach the MQTT server. If configured in Hotspot or WIFI Access Point, the gateway can route WIFI clients like
smartphones or tablets to the internet, through wired Ethernet or 3G/4G cellular network if this option is present.
WIFI modes supported include 802.11 ac/a/b/g/n 2T2R.

You can now test the WIFI hotspot with a client like a smartphone. Make sure the gateway has internet access
through the wired ethernet or 3G/4G cellular network if you test internet access.
7.2. Configure the WIFI as a client to reach external hotspot
Please follow the steps below to configure the gateway WIFI as a WIFI client or end point:
A. Select network connections from the applications menu; if another WIFI connection is already shown on the
