C. UNPACKING AND ASSEMBLY
1. Openthe boxand removethe top layer of foam.The
KSI2-2andfollowingitems will nowtie visible:
T-15torx key~or3/32 allen key

NOTE:If any of these items are not included please

2. Removethe plastic bagfromthe preamplifier.
NOTE:Saveall packingm. at.erials. If youmustship your
KS.L-2in the future, repacktoe unit in its original
packagingto prevent transit damage.

D. BASIC INSTALLATION AND
OPERATION
1. Place the unit ona firm level surface free fromexces-
sive dirt or moisture..TheKSL-2is not particularly hum
sensitive, therefore other componentscan be placed on or
aroundthe KSL-2.Care should be taken howeverif the
optional phonoboard is installed. Motors,power
supplies and somedigital devices can induce hum
through the phonoboard.
2. Plugthe ACcord into the receptacle on the backof the
unit. Plugthe remainingendinto the wall ACreceptacle.
Thepilot LEDwill illuminate.
NOTE:While the KSL-2has superb regulation and does
not require a dedicatedACcircuit, westrongly advise
against any connectionsthrough extension cords or mul-
tiple ACadaptors. Highquality 15 ampline conditioners
or grounded~Cstrips are acceptable.
NOTE:TheKSL-2is designedto be left ONat all times.
OPTIONAL PHONOOPERATION
TheKSL-2has an optional phonoboard available. The
phonoboard is swichable f6r Movingmagnetand Mov-
ing coil phonocartridges. Shouldthe phon,o. boardbe
orderedat a later dat,~, a full descriptionot installation
and operation is supplied with the phonoboard.
1. Withphonoboardinstall,ed, set the input impedance
loading of the phonocartridge to the load impedance
closest to the manufacturer’sspecification. Theunit ,
comesfactory set,to 100 ohmsin the Movingcoil switch
position. FolIowthe instructions in the KSL-2Phono
Manualfor exact set-up description should changesbe
necessary.

E. INPUT AND OUTPUT
CONNECTIONS
CAUTION:Whenmaking connections to this component
or any other, makesure tlie poweramplifier is OFF.
CAUTION:Makesure all cable terminations are of the
highest quality, free fromfrayedends, shorts or cold
soIderjoints.
1. Connect[he left andright outputs of yoursourcecom-
ponentsto the inputs on the KSL-2.TheKSL-2is
equippedwith twosingle-ended inputs, twobalanced
capableinputs, a single-endedtape input andtape output.
Thesingle-endedand balancedinputs are labeled S-1 and
S.-2, B-Iand_B-2respectively, to allowcustomizationin
the set-up ot yoursystem.Tlie Tapeinput is labeled
TAPEIN, the Tapeoutput is labeIed TAPEOUT.There is
no difference betweenthe twosingle-endedinputs, or
betweenthe twobalancedi.nputs.. If youhavethe optional
phonoboardinstalled, it will utilize the S-1inputincl.ud-
mgthe external phonogroundconnector. Theexternal
phonogroundconnector is labeled GND.Youc.anno.t use
the S-1 input connectorsas a line level input whenthe
phonoboardis installed.
2. Connectthe output of the KSL-2to the input of your
poweramplifier. TheKSL-2has both Balancedoutputs
v!a standard XLRconnectors and single-ended outputs
via standard RCAconnectors.
Thepinassignment for the XLRconnectors is:
pin 1-=shield (ground) .
p!n 2 = non-inverting~nput(hot)
pin 3 = inverting input
NOTE:TheRCAcenter conductor for each channel is
wiredin parallel withpin 2, the non-invertedo, utput.
Onlyoneof these outputs shouldbe connectectto a single
stereo amplifier.
NOTE:Whenconnecting inputs or outputs to the KSL-2,
rememberthe balanced connections will have 6dBof
gain morethan the single-ended connections. Whenlevel
matchingis critical in yourinstall, keepthis specification
in mind.

F. BASIC PREAMPLIFIER
OPERATION
1. Select the Muteposition on the KSL-2.
2. Turnthe volumecontrol fully counterclockwiseto the
Offposition.
3. Turnthe poweramplifier On.Besure the KSL-2is on
at this point. If the KSL-2is notpoweredat this time,
turn the amplifier Off andplug tile KSL-2into the wall
ACreceptacle. Resumeoperation sequence. "
4. Choosea listening source andselect that input withthe
select switch on the-KSL-2.
5. Start playof the source.
6. Slowlyturn the volumecontrol clockwiseuntil you
reach a comfortablelistening level.
7. Whenchangingsources, return to the. Muteposition
and/orlowerthe volume.Thisinsures tlaat tlae next
sourceyouplay will not be potentially damagingto your
systemwitti a highoutputtransient.

Q. WhenI turn up the volumeon the KSL-2a loud hum
is present fromtlie loudspeakers.Whatcouldit be?
A. Humcan be causedby several different disturbances.
Checkto makesure all of the cables in andout of the
KSL-2are sound and makingproper contact. Makesure
there are_no powersupplies or huminducing components
ontop o~ or directly belowthe KSL-2.
Youalso could be experiencinga groundloop in the
system. Agroundloop can be ca.used whe.nseveral.
componentswithdiffgrent groundpotentials are in.tlae
system.Groundloops can often be easily correctefl.
Consu.lt your dealer or KRELLfor systemgrounaing
considerations.
Q. Canthe KSL-2be used to control morethan one
system?
A. Yes, the KSL-2has both single-ended and balanced
outputs that can be usedsimultaneouslyto control two
seperate systems.
Q. WhenI select the B1 !nput. onthe KSL-2,on.e channel
seemsto haveless gain tlaan tlae other. Is something
wrongwith the preamp?
A. Morethan likely there is not a problemwith the
KSL-2.Thebalancedinput or ou.tpu, t internal cable termi-
nationscouldbeincorrect. Switclatlae suspectc.abl.e to
the other channelandvice versa to determinewlaetlaer a
cable is defective. If the problemswitchesto the other
channel,it is a defective cable. If the problemdoesnot
moveto the other channeland remainsthe sameafter
cables havebeen.switched,checkthe wiringat the input
of the KS.L-2witla the sameprocess.If it is not cableor
source related call your dealer or KRELL.
Checkto makesure the balancecontrol is in the fully
upright position.

Q. Whydo I have, to turn up the volumeso high to get
musicat a normmlistening level?
A. If your systemdoesnot seem.to haveenoughgain
overall, youare probab~lynot utilizing the balancedinput
or output capabihties ot the KSL-2.F-or every balanced
termination on the KSL-2you increase the gain by 6dB.
~. I camehomeone eveningand the pilot LEDin the
SL-2wasnot illuminated( Whatshould I do?
A. Unplugthe KSL-2fromthe wall ACreceptacle an.d
checkthe fuse in the rear panel.If there is a breakin tlae
wireinside the fuse, replaceit. If there is nobreakin the
fuse, donot try turning onthe preamplifi.eror replacing
the fuse. Call )our defiler or KRELL.If tlae newfuse lets
thee unit turn onwhenyouplugit in, thenfails shortly.
atterward, call KRELLIndustries. If the fuse solves tlae
problem,carry onlistening as usual.
