soriesfromthe box.Removethe protec-
tive plasticwrapfromtheunit.

placedon or aroundthe KAV-250p,since
the KAV-250pis not particularly humsensi-

WARNING
Whenmakingconnectionsto this compo-
nent or anyother, makesure the power
amplifier is Off andthe KAV-250pis in the
Muteor Stand-bymode.Makesureall cable
terminationsareof thehighestquality, free
fromfrayedends,shorts,orcoldsolderjoints.

of single-endedinputs via RCAconnectors
(S-1, S-2, andS-3/PR),onesingle-ended
tapeinput via RCAconnectors(Tape),and
onepair balancedinput via XLRconnectors
(B-l). TheS-1andS-2inputsare standard
single-endedinputs. TheS-3/PRhasa user
configurableoption. TheS3/PRinput is ~et
asa standardinput fromthefactory, andit
maybeset for useasa surroundprocessor

audiocables.
1. Connectthe left andright outputsof
your sourcecomponentsto the inputs
on the KAV-250p.
2. Connectthe output of the KAV-250pto
theinputof yourpoweramplifier.
Krell ®recommendsthe use of balanced
interconnects.Balancedinterconnectsnot
onlyhavethe ability to minimizesonicloss
but also haveimmunityto inducednoise,
especiallyfor installationsusinglongcable
lengths. Balancedconnectionshave6dB
moregain than single-endedconnections.
Whenlevel matchingis critical, keepthis
specificationin mind.
AdditionalConnections
RC-5IN
This input acceptsbasebandRC-5input
commandsfrom various remotedevices,
facilitating custominstallations. Theinput
allows the KAV-250pto becontrolled via
hard-wiredsignalssentfromsuchunits.

Theseoutputs send12volt poweron/off
signalsto otherKrell components,aswell
asto other devicesthat incorporatea 12
volt poweron/off trigger input. Thisallows
for remoteturn on/off of othercomponents
whenthe KAV-250pis poweredon/off.
NOTE:Consult the owner’s reference of
anydeviceusedin a custominstallation to
takefull advantageof the remotecapability
of the KAV-250p.
Preamplifier and Remote
Control Operation
TheKAV-250pprovidesinput selection and
volumecontrol fromthe front panel. The
KAV-250premoteprovides completepre-
amplifierfunctionsaswellasKrell CDtrans-
port andpoweramplifier remotefunctions.
NOTE:Notall buttonsonthe remotecontrol
function with the KAV-250p.Press the
Amp/Prebutton on the remoteto access
preamplifier commands.
NOTE:Whena function button on the
remotecontrolis pressed,thebluepilot led
will flash onthe KAV-250p.Whenthe but-
tonis releasedtheflashingstops.
1. Engage the power switch on the
KAV-250peither manuallyor usingthe
remotecontrol. After pressingthe power
switch, the red Stand-byled on the
KAV-250pwill turn off andthe blue
Powerled onthe KAV-250pwill illumi-
nate. Thepreamplifieris nowreadyfor
operation.
2. Choosea listening sourceandselect
that input either manuallyor via the
remotecontrol.
3. Startplayof thesource.
4. Setthe volumeto a comfortablelisten-
inglevel.
5. Whenchangingsources,lower the vol-
umeto the Off positionor Mutethe out-
put (seeMute,onpage6). Thisinsures

that thenextsourceplayedwill not dam-
ageyoursystemwith a highoutputtran-
sient.

BALANCEand LEVEL
Wheneither the "12 or the "R" on the
Balancecontrol button is pressedon the
remote,the Balanceled onthe KAV-250p
will illuminate andthe volumecontrolleds
convertto a Balancecontrol indicator. The
centerled (Level)will alwaysremaindimly
illuminated indicating the centerbalance
position.Asbalanceis adjustedeitherleft or
right, anothermorebrightly lit led illumi-
natesto indicate the nowmodifiedbalance
setting.After5secondsof inactivityor a vol-
umeadjustment,theledsrevert backto vol-
umecontrol indicators. If the Balancehas
beenset to anoff-center position, the
Balanceled will remainlit after theadjust-
mentperiod. If returned to a centered
Balancedposition, the Balancedled will
extinguishafter the adjustmentperiod.
MUTE(front panelonly)
Presstheinput buttonof the activesource
to mutetheoutput.
UNMUTE(front panelonly)
Pressthe input buttonof theactive source
againto unmutethe input. If the active
sourceis changedwhile the KAV-250pis
muted,pressthe input button of the new
active sourcea secondtimeto unmutethe
KAV-250p.
MUTE(remotecontrol only)
Pressthemutebuttonof theremoteto mute
the outputof theactivesource.
UNMUTE(remotecontrol only)
Press the mutebutton of the remoteto
unmutetheoutputof the activesource.
NOTE:Whenthe muteled onthe KAV-250p
is illuminated,thereis nosignaloutput.

NOTE:Batteries shouldbe replacedwhen

intermittent. TheKAV-250premoteuses
twoAAAsize1.5volt batteries.
1. Removethe backplate to exposethe
batteries.
2. Removethe old batteries.
3. Install the newbatteries, followingthe
batteryposition diagramonthe plastic
batteryreceptacle.
4. Re-installthe backplate.
5. Checkto makesure the remotecontrol
is functioningproperly.

S-3/PR
Forsimplified integration of an,adVsurround
soundprocessor, the S-3/PRinput can be
set to operateas a unity gainstage.In this
Theater Throughput TM mode, when the
S-3/PRinput is selected, the volumeand
balancecontrols of the KAV-250pare dis-
abled.Volumecontrol is transferredfromthe
KAV-250p to the A/V surround sound
processor connectedto the S-3/PRinput.
Theleft andright channelvolumesettings
becomeindependent from the volumecon-
trol of the KAV-250pandthe overall system
level is determinedexclusively by the A/V
surround soundprocessor.
NOTE:Thefactory default position sets the
S-3/PRinput asa standardinput.
Toenable this option, it is necessaryto
removethe top cover of the KAV-250p.
1. Unplugthe KAV-250pfrom the ACout-
let.
Removethe KAV-250ptop cover screws
with the suppliedT-10Torxwrench.Lift
the cover from the KAV-250p.
3. Find the section labeled Input Configure
located behindthe faceplate directly in
back of the KRELLlogo. The factory
default setting is shownin Figure 1
below. Removethe jumperfrom the S-3
side andplace it on the side labeled
proc as shownin Figure 2 below.
4. Placethe top coverbackon the KAV-250p
andinsert the coverscrews.
5. Plug the KAV-250pbackinto the ACout-
let.

ThisKrell producthasa limitedwarrantyof five yearsfor
partsandlaboroncircuitry.Shouldthis productfail to per-
format anytimeduringthewarranty,Krellwill repairit at
nocostto theowner,exceptassetforth in this warranty.
Thewarrantydoesnot applyto damagecausedbyactsof
Godor nature.
Thewarrantyonthis pageshall bein lieu of anyother
warranty,expressedor implied,including,butnotlimited
to, anyimpliedwarrantyof merchantabilityor fitnessfor a
particular purpose.Therearenowarrantieswhichexceed
beyondthosedescribedin this document.If this product
doesnot performas warrantedherein, the owner’ssole
remedyshall berepair.In noeventwill Krellbeliable for
incidental or consequentialdamagesarising frompur-
chase,use,or inability to usethis product,evenif Krell

ty becauseof regulationswithinaspecificcountry.Please
checkwithyourdistributorfor a completeunderstandingof
thewarrantyin yourcountry.
If a unitis servicedbyadistributorwhodidnotimportthe
unit, theremaybeachargefor service,evenif theproduct
is withinthewarrantyperiod.
Freightto thefactoryis yourresponsibility.Returnfreight
withintheUnitedStates(U.S.A.)is includedin thewarran-
ty. If youpurchasedyourKrell productoutsidetheU.S.A.

Noexpressedor impliedwarrantyis madefor anyKrell
productdamagedby accident,abuse,misuse,natural or
personaldisaster,or unauthorizedmodification.
Anyunauthorizedvoltage conversion,disassembly,
componentreplacement,perforation of chassis,
updates,or modificationsperformedto the unit will
voidthewarranty.
Theoperatingvoltageof this unitis determinedbythef~c-
tory andcanonlybechangedbyanauthorizedKrell dis-
tributororat thefactory.Thevoltagefor this productin the
U.S.A.cannotbechangeduntil six monthsfromtheorigina~
