7. Heat
Do not operate the product near any heat source, such as radiators or other devices.
8. Water and moisture
Even if the product is weather-resistant, it can not be exposed to moisture (rain, sea spray, shower,
steam) for a long period of time, nor put in direct contact or partially immersed in water. This would
cause irreversible damage to exposed components.
9. System parts and rigging inspection
All system components must be inspected before use, in order to detect any possible defects.
Please refer to the “Care and Maintenance” section of this manual as well as any other manuals
pertaining to the system for a detailed description of the inspection procedure.
Any part showing any sign of defect must immediately be put aside and withdrawn from use to be
inspected by qualified service personnel.
10. Mounting instructions
Do not place the product on an unstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table. The product may fall
and be seriously damaged itself, and may cause serious human injury. Any mounting of the product
should follow the manufacturer’s instructions given in this manual, and should use a mounting
accessory recommended by the manufacturer.
11. Conditions which require immediate service
Servicing is required when the product has been damaged in any way such as:
•The product has been exposed to rain or moisture,
•The product was dropped or the enclosure is damaged,
•The product does not operate normally.
12. Manual
Keep this manual in a safe place during the product lifetime. This manual forms an integral part of the
product. Reselling of the product is only possible if the user manual is available. Any changes made to
the product have to be documented in writing and passed on to the buyer in the event of resale.

3INTRODUCTION
3.1 Welcome to L-ACOUSTICS®
Thank you for purchasing the L-ACOUSTICS®SB118 subwoofer enclosure.
This manual contains essential information on installing and operating the product correctly and safely. Read this manual
carefully in order to make familiar with these procedures.
As part of a continuous evolution of techniques and standards, L-ACOUSTICS®reserves the right to
change the specifications of the product and the content of this manual without prior notice. Please check
the L-ACOUSTICS®internet website @ www.l-acoustics.com on a regular basis for latest update.
If the product requires repair or if information about the warranty is needed, please contact an approved
L-ACOUSTICS®distributor. In order to obtain the address of the nearest distributor go to the internet website @

3.2 Unpacking
Carefully open the shipping carton and check the product for any noticeable damage. Each L-ACOUSTICS® product is
tested and inspected before leaving the factory and should arrive in perfect condition.
If found to be damaged, notify the shipping company or the distributor immediately. Only the consignee may initiate a
claim with the carrier for damage incurred during shipping. Be sure to save the carton and packing materials for the
carrier's inspection.

4SYSTEM APPROACH
The L-ACOUSTICS®SB118 subwoofer enclosure is a recommended subwoofer companion for the XT, KIVA,
ARCS®, dV-DOSC, and KUDO®systems, lowering the combined system operating range down to 32 Hz.
The system solution developed by L-ACOUSTICS®for SB118 consists of the elements needed to fully take advantage
of the possible configurations and optimize the system. The main components of the system are:

The SB118 subwoofer is compatible with standard L-ACOUSTICS®accessories. These accessories include the
loudspeaker cables L-ACOUSTICS®SP.7, SP10, and SP25 with respective lengths of 0.7 m/2.3 ft., 10 m/32.8 ft., and
25 m/82 ft. These cables allow connection of the SB118 enclosure to the LA4 amplified controller. Each cable is a
4-conductor cable with 4 mm2conductor cross-section (13 SWG, 11 AWG) and features 4-point Speakon®
connectors.
The combination of the L-ACOUSTICS®DOSUB-LA8 cable and one of the DO.7, DO10, and DO25 cables (with
respective lengths of 0.7 m/2.3 ft., 10 m/32.8 ft., and 25 m/82 ft.) allows connection to the LA8 amplified controller.
The DO cables are 8-conductor cables with 4 mm2conductor cross-section (13 SWG, 11 AWG) and the DOSUB-LA8
cable is an 8-conductor cable with 2.5 mm2conductor cross-section (15 SWG, 13 AWG). They all feature 8-pin PA-
COM®and/or 4-point Speakon®connectors.
The SB118 can be driven and powered by both the L-ACOUSTICS®LA4 and LA8 amplified controllers. These
ensure intelligent protection, filtering, and equalization of the enclosures. Four channels of amplification are provided
along with the OEM factory preset libraries, ensuring the optimization and performance of the system within the limits
of the recommended configurations.
Each system design configuration should first be modeled and studied using the L-ACOUSTICS®SOUNDVISION
software. The software predictions for the system’s HF and MF sections are based on the preset parameters stored in
the amplified controllers.
Several amplified controllers can be interconnected and monitored through the proprietary L-ACOUSTICS®L-NET
network using the L-ACOUSTICS®LA NETWORK MANAGER software.
Detailed description on using the LA4 and LA8 amplified controllers, SOUNDVISION and LA NETWORK MANAGER
software is beyond the scope of this manual. Please refer to the appropriate documentation also available on the
L-ACOUSTICS®internet website @ www.l-acoustics.com.

5SB118 SUBWOOFER ENCLOSURE
The L-ACOUSTICS®SB118 subwoofer enclosure contains a single 18’’ LF transducer loaded in a dual vented
bandpass configuration. This cabinet design allows for maximum SPL output and extended low frequency response in a
highly compact and very low profile enclosure.
The 18” LF transducer employed in the SB118 features high power handling capacity combined with low distortion and
thermal power compression. The nominal impedance of the SB118 enclosure is 8 ohms.
In a standard configuration, the SB118 enclosure generates an omni-directional coverage pattern.
The SB118 cabinet is made of high grade Baltic birch plywood with remarkable mechanical and acoustical properties for
improved long term durability.

6INSTALLATION
6.1 Shipping the SB118
The optional L-ACOUSTICS®SB118PLA dolly board (see Figure 2) can be secured to the SB118 enclosure by
inserting the two captive dolly board pins in the front locator studs (see Figure 3) thus allowing easy transportation and
protection of the enclosure.
L-ACOUSTICS®recommends using the L-ACOUSTICS® SB118PLA removable front dolly board
and the L-ACOUSTICS® SB118COV protective cover (see Figure 2) for shipping the SB118
enclosure.
6.2 Stacking or flying the SB118
The SB118 rigging system allows various setups in flown or stacked configurations such as:
•Flying vertical array (available as a future development).
•Stacking vertical array of up to 8 SB118 enclosures using the fully integrated stacking runners and runner
guides (see Figure 3).
•Mounting an XT or P enclosure using the built-in 35 mm/1.38 in. pole mount socket (see Figure 3) to
easily create a compact FOH system.
A maximum of eight SB118 enclosures can be stacked one on one so as to build a vertical array.
Secure each array with a ratchet strap or any other suitable materials.
6.3 Connecting speakers
The SB118 enclosure can be driven and powered by both the dedicated L-ACOUSTICS®LA4 and LA8 amplified
controllers. The LA4 can drive four SB118 enclosures (one per channel) and the LA8 can drive up to eight SB118
enclosures (2 per channel in parallel). Channel assignment varies according to the preset selected by the user for a given
application. For more details please refer to the ‘‘LA4’’ or ‘‘LA8’’ user manual also available on the L-ACOUSTICS®
internet website @ www.l-acoustics.com.
The SB118 enclosure is equipped with two 4-point Speakon®connectors wired in parallel allowing connection with a
second SB118 enclosure in parallel using an L-ACOUSTICS®SP.7 link cable.
To connect the SB118 enclosure to the LA4 amplified controller (Figure 4) L-ACOUSTICS®recommends using one of
the L-ACOUSTICS®SP10 or SP25 cables.
To connect the SB118 enclosure to the LA8 amplified controller (Figure 5) L-ACOUSTICS®recommends using the
L-ACOUSTICS®DOSUB-LA8 cable in conjunction with one of the DO.7, DO10, or DO25 cables.
A maximum of one SB118 enclosure can be connected per LA4 output channel.
A maximum of two SB118 enclosures can be connected per LA8 output channel.

To ensure both high performance and safety, L-ACOUSTICS®recommends the exclusive use of
high-quality, fully insulated speaker cables made of stranded copper wire.
In order to preserve a high damping factor it is desirable to keep loudspeaker cables as short as
possible and with a gauge offering low resistance per unit length.
The following table provides information regarding the recommended length versus wire cross-section. Two cases are
possible depending on the impedance load value connected to the LA4 or LA8 (8 Ωfor a single SB118 enclosure, 4 Ω
for two SB118 enclosures in parallel):

According to the calculation in Table 1, a DO25/DOSUB-LA8 cable combination can be used to power two SB118 in
parallel (4Ωload) with a damping factor still greater than 20.

7OPERATION
7.1 System configuration
The choice of a system configuration should be the result of an electro-acoustic study conducted by an expert (System
Engineer or Audio Consultant). However, this will not be detailed here as sound-design aspects are beyond the scope
of this manual. This study can rely on the simulations modeled in SOUNDVISION software, yielding electro-acoustic
predictions which take into account the enclosures’manufacturer data and particular situational usage, as well as the
projected environment.
Several operation modes are for building all the common configurations (L/R, L/C/R, distributed), and each mode is
associated with a set of factory presets. Other non-conforming configurations do not correspond to any preset.
When L-ACOUSTICS®SB118 subwoofer enclosure is intended to extend the low frequency response of a main
system the user can choose between the ‘‘STANDARD’’ and ‘‘CARDIOÏD’’ operation modes. The ‘‘MONO HYBRID’’
or ‘‘STEREO HYBRID’’ operation modes allow the SB118 to extend the low frequency response of ARCS®and XT
enclosures, respectively.
Note: In “HYBRID” operation modes both SB118 and ARCS®or XT enclosures are driven from the same amplified
controller thus limiting the number of required units.
The LA8 output channel assignment varies with the preset selected by the user. Always check that
each SB118 enclosure is connected to the correct output channel before operating.
Note: The latest version of the preset library can be supplied by an L-ACOUSTICS®authorized representative and is
also downloadable on the L-ACOUSTICS®internet website @ www.l-acoustics.com.
7.2 “STANDARD” mode
In ‘‘STANDARD’’ mode the SB118 enclosures extend the low frequency response of the system in use down to 32Hz.
Each SB118 enclosure generates an omni-directional coverage pattern.
The corresponding presets are available in both LA4 and LA8 libraries.
7.2.1 Connecting the SB118 to the LA4 or LA8
Each of the SB118 enclosures is connected to an LA4 or LA8 output channel ranging from channel 1 through 4. On the
LA8 only, additional cabinets can be grouped in pairs in parallel with the first ones. Therefore a single LA4 amplified
controller can drive up to four SB118 enclosures (Figure 6), and a single LA8 amplified controller can drive up to eight
SB118 enclosures (Figure 7).
Any additional SB118 enclosure beyond 4 for the LA4 (or 8 for the LA8) needs to be connected to an additional
amplified controller following the same wiring procedures. Therefore, each group of 4 additional SB118 requires the
use of a new LA4 amplified controller while each group of 8 additional SB118 requires the use of a new LA8 amplified
controller.
Note: System resources are optimized for a multiple of four SB118 enclosures.

7.2.2 [SB118_60] and [SB118_100] presets
The [SB118_60] preset features a 60 Hz low-pass filter allowing the SB118 to be used as a subwoofer companion for
KUDO®, dV-DOSC/dV-SUB, ARCS®, and KIVA/KILO systems.
The [SB118_100] preset features a 100 Hz low-pass filter allowing the SB118 to be used as a subwoofer companion for
dV-DOSC, ARCS®, XT, and P systems.
The recommended ratios are 2 SB118 for each of the following: 3 KUDO®, 3 dV-DOSC, 3 dV-DOSC/1 dV-SUB,
2 ARCS®, 6 KIVA/2 KILO, four 8XT, four 108P, two 12XT, two 112P, or two 115XT HiQ. When using the KUDO®
system in an application requiring higher SUB levels, the ratio can be 2 SB118 for 2 KUDO®.
Activate the LOAD PRESET menu from the LA4 or LA8 amplified controller front panel and then select the desired
preset. Refer to the ‘‘LA4’’ or ‘’LA8’’ user manual for additional instructions. The presets are also accessible using
the LA NETWORK MANAGER software (refer to ‘‘LA NETWORK MANAGER’’ user manual). Accessible
parameters in ‘‘STANDARD’’ mode are shown in the following chart:

7.3 “CARDIOÏD” mode
In ‘‘CARDIOÏD’’ mode the SB118 enclosures extend the low frequency response of the system in use down to 32Hz.
Each SB28 array generates a cardioïd coverage pattern providing maximum rejection to the rear.
The corresponding presets are available in both LA4 and LA8 libraries.
A cardioïd array is obtained by vertically arraying four SB118 enclosures, the lower of which being
reversed from front to rear (Figure 8).
If several arrays are used the space between each pair must be of 0.6 m/2 ft. (Figure 8).
7.3.1 Connecting the SB118 to the LA4 or LA8
Each of the SB118 enclosures is connected to an LA4 or LA8 output channel ranging from channel 1 through 4 where
channel 1 is feeding the lower reversed enclosure. On the LA8 only, additional cabinets can be grouped in pairs in
parallel with the first ones so as to build a second cardioïd array. Therefore a single LA4 amplified controller can drive
up to one cardioïd array and a single LA8 amplified controller can drive up to two cardioïd arrays (Figure 8).
To achieve a cardioïd dispersion pattern always check that the lowest reversed SB118 is connected
to the output channel 1.
Any additional cardioïd array beyond one for the LA4 (or two for the LA8) needs to be connected to an additional
amplified controller following the same wiring procedures.

7.3.2 [SB118_60_C] and [SB118_100_C] presets
The [SB118_60_C] preset features a 60 Hz low-pass filter allowing the SB118 to be used as a cardioïd subwoofer
companion for KUDO®, dV-DOSC/dV-SUB, ARCS®, and KIVA/KILO systems.
The [SB118_100_C] preset features a 100 Hz low-pass filter allowing the SB118 to be used as a cardioïd subwoofer
companion for dV-DOSC, ARCS®, XT, and P systems.
The recommended ratios are 4 SB118 for each of the following: 6 KUDO®, 6 dV-DOSC, 6 dV-DOSC/2 dV-SUB,
4 ARCS®, 12 KIVA/4 KILO, eight 8XT, eight 108P, four 12XT, four 112P, or four 115XT HiQ. When using the KUDO®
system in an application requiring higher SUB levels, the ratio can be 4 SB118 for 4 KUDO®.
Activate the LOAD PRESET menu from the LA4 or LA8 amplified controller front panel and then select the desired
preset. Refer to the ‘‘LA4’’ or ‘‘LA8’’ user manual for additional instructions. The presets are also accessible using

In ‘‘MONO HYBRID’’ mode the SB118 enclosures are coupled with ARCS®enclosures. The frequency bandwidth of
the system is extended down to 32 Hz and the crossover frequency between the SB118 and the ARCS®low section is
60 Hz.
The corresponding presets are available only in the LA4 library.
7.4.1 Connecting to the LA4
The enclosures connect to the LA4 outputs as follows: channels 1 and 2 are dedicated to the two SB118 enclosures,
and channel 3 is dedicated to the first ARCS®enclosure. The ARCS®enclosure can be paired in parallel with an
additional ARCS®enclosure. Therefore, a single LA4 amplified controller can drive up to two SB118 and 2 ARCS®
enclosures as shown in Figure 9.
A maximum of one SB118 enclosure can be connected per LA4 output channel.
A maximum of two ARCS®enclosures can be connected per LA4 output channel.
Additional enclosures beyond two ARCS®and two SB118 must be connected to an additional LA4 amplified controller.
Note: The system resources are optimized for two ARCS®and two SB118.

7.4.2 [ARCS_S118_LO] and [ARCS_S118_HI] presets
The [ARCS_S118_LO] preset features a standard HF contour.
The [ARCS_S118_HI] preset features an increased HF contour (3dB HF shelving EQ difference versus the LO preset).
The recommended ratio is one SB118 for one ARCS®.

Activate the LOAD PRESET menu from the LA4 amplified controller front panel and then select the desired preset.
Refer to the ‘‘LA4’’ user manual for additional instructions. The presets are also accessible using the LA NETWORK

7.5 “STEREO HYBRID” mode
In the ‘‘STEREO HYBRID’’ mode the SB118 enclosures are coupled with the 8XT or passive 12XT enclosures.
The corresponding presets are available only in the LA4 library.
7.5.1 Connecting to the LA4
12XT enclosures must be set in passive configuration (see the ‘‘12XT’’ user manual).
The enclosures connect to the LA4 outputs as follows: channels 1 and 3 are dedicated to both SB118 enclosures,
channels 2 and 4 are dedicated to XT enclosures. Each XT enclosure can be paired in parallel with an additional XT of
the same model. Therefore, a single LA4 amplified controller can drive up to four XT and two SB118 enclosures as
shown in Figure 10.
A maximum of one SB118 enclosure can be connected per LA4 output channel.
A maximum of two XT enclosures can be connected per LA4 output channel.
Additional enclosures beyond two SB118 and four XT must be connected to an additional LA4 amplified controller.

7.5.2 [8XT_SB118] and [12XTP_SB118] presets
The [8XT_SB118] and [12XTP_SB118] presets feature the same HI frequency shelving equalization than the FRONT
preset for the 8XT and passive 12XT enclosures, respectively. The frequency bandwidth of the system is extended
down to 32 Hz and the crossover frequency between the SB118 and the XT LO section is 100 Hz.
The recommended ratio is one SB118 for a pair of 8XT or one 12XT.
Activate the LOAD PRESET menu from the LA4 amplified controller front panel and then select the desired preset.
