Precautions
The CD duplicator you have just purchased includes a laser diode device, which classifies it
as a "Laser Class I" product. This laser is not dangerous for the user under normal operating
conditions. However, we strongly advise you not to place any reflective objects in the disc
loading system due to the risk of exposure to laser emissions that may be reflected by such
objects.
Always follow the basic precautions listed below to use your LaCie duplicator safely and
correctly. Respecting these guidelines will help to avoid the possibility of personal injury to
yourself or others, as well as to prevent damage to your device and other computer
equipment. These precautions include, but are not limited to, the following:
Health and safety precautions:
• Read this User's Manual carefully, and follow the correct procedure when setting up the
device.
• Do not look inside or place your hand over the open CD or DVD tray. Never look directly or
indirectly (with a mirror) at the laser diode, even when the device is not in operation. If you
expose your eyes or skin to the lasers inside your duplicator’s drives, you risk damage or
loss of your vision or other personal injury.
• Do not open your duplicator or attempt to disassemble or modify it. Do not insert your
fingers into the drives. Never insert any metallic object into the drives to avoid any risk of
electrical shock, fire, short-circuiting or dangerous emissions. Your duplicator contains no
user-serviceable parts. If it appears to be malfunctioning, have it inspected by qualified LaCie
service staff.
• Never expose your device to rain or chemical products, or use it near water or in damp or
wet conditions. Never place containers on it containing liquids that may spill into its openings.
Doing so increases the risk of electrical shock, short-circuiting, fire or personal injury.
General use precautions:
• Do not expose the device to temperatures outside the 5° C to 45° C (41° F to 104° F)
range. Doing so may damage the device or disfigure its casing. Avoid placing your drive near
a source of heat or exposing it to sunlight (even through a window). Inversely, placing your
device in an environment that is too cold or humid may damage the unit.
• Always unplug the duplicator from the electrical outlet if there is a risk of lightning or if it will
not be used for an extended period of time. Otherwise, there is an increased risk of electrical
shock, short-circuiting or fire.
• Use only the power supply shipped with the device.
• Do not place heavy objects on top of the duplicator or use excessive force on its buttons,
connectors and tray. Doing so increases the risk of damage to the device.
• Always place your duplicator in a horizontal position before using it. Otherwise, it may fall,
causing damage to the device and/or corruption or loss of data.
• Always remove any discs from the disc trays before transporting your duplicator. Otherwise,
written data may be destroyed or the drives’ internal components may be damaged.
• Never use excessive force on the disc loading system; discs should be inserted effortlessly
into your drives.
• Protect your duplicator from excessive exposure to dust during use or storage. Dust can
build up inside the device, increasing the risk of damage or malfunction.
• Never use benzene, paint thinners, detergent or other chemical products to clean the
outside of the drive. Such products will disfigure and discolour the front panel and casing.
Instead, use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the device.

• Never move the drive while it is operating. Always allow at least 30 seconds after spin down
before moving the drive.
• Never close or lock the front door before the selected duplication, verification or erasing
process is underway, as indicated on the LCD screen.
The drive's warranty may be void as a result of the failure to respect the
precautions listed above.
Media precautions
• Do not use or store CD-ROM discs and blank CD-R or CD-RW discs in places which are
dirty or dusty; which are subject to extreme temperatures; which are warm, humid or
favorable to condensation; or which are exposed to direct sunlight.
• Do not use cracked, warped or damaged discs.
• Do not touch or write on the disc’s reading/writing surface.
• Do not drop, bend, flex or place any heavy objects on the disc.
• Do not apply any CD labels that may come off inside the drive.
• Store discs in their protective sleeves or cases when they are not being used.
• Do not incinerate unwanted or unusable CDs: discs that are no longer used should be
disposed of properly according to local rules and regulations.
• Do not mix CD-R and CD-RW media when duplicating. When duplicating a master disc, use
either only all CD-R or all CD-RW media in the target drives. Otherwise, a duplication error
will occur.
A few words about copyright laws…
Your new LaCie duplicator opens up a whole world of possibilities for copying data and audio
onto disc. Please be responsible in your use of this wonderful technology. Before copying
anything onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc, make sure you are not violating any copyright laws.
LaCie duplicators have been designed for desktop CD duplication only and should not be
considered either as a system suited to large-scale duplication or as an industrial CD
duplicator.
Most software companies allow licensed owners to make one (1) backup or archive copy of
their software. Check your software's license agreement for specific details. Using these
devices to duplicate more than one personal copy of CD-ROM, CD-DA (audio) CD
software or any other CD protected by copyright is strictly prohibited.
Copying audio CDs for distribution to third parties is illegal and punishable by law. LaCie
cannot be held responsible for the inappropriate use of these devices.
Data safety
LaCie and its suppliers accept no liability for any loss of data or any other damage, whether
direct or indirect, resulting from the use or malfunction of this product. As a precaution, it is
recommended that the discs be tested after they have been written to. Please ensure that a
backup copy of any important data is made on a separate storage unit in order to have a safe
copy in the event of data loss or corruption. Under no circumstances do LaCie or its suppliers
guarantee the reliability of the CD-R or CD-RW media used in this drive.

1. Introducing the Dupli 125
Your LaCie Dupli 125 is the first of a new generation of smart and easy-to-use devices
dedicated to CD duplication, bringing you the following features:
• One IDE DVD-ROM drive of the latest generation with multi-read features,
• Five IDE CD-RW drives that can record any type of data on CD-R/RW discs,
• A smart IDE electronic controller that automatically recognizes the type of CD you have
inserted in the DVD-ROM drive,
• A sturdy casing with an integrated long-life power supply.
A true stand-alone CD-duplication solution, your LaCie Dupli 125 is completely autonomous,
requiring no software or computer to duplicate CDs. Its various functions will allow you to
make up to 5 copies of a master CD at once for quick, easy duplication.
• To ensure fail-proof CD duplication, the Dupli 125 provides a duplication test function,
allowing you to simulate a record without actually recording to the CD. We recommend using
this feature if you feel your master or target CD media may be scratched or damaged. This
will help you to use your blank CD-R media more efficiently.
• With its Read Check and Verification functions, you can check that your burned audio CDs
will be read properly and that your burned data CDs have been duplicated correctly.
• Thanks to its five CD-RW drives, you can erase up to five CD-RW media at once, enabling
you to free up your re-writeable discs in a snap.
Although it features a DVD-ROM drive, you cannot copy DVD media with the
Dupli 125. The DVD-ROM drive does, however, provide greater flexibility and
better overall performance than an ordinary CD-ROM drive.

4. Copy mode
The Dupli 125’s Copy mode enables you to copy CD media, verify the results, set the write
speed and configure the session parameter to meet your needs. This chapter describes how
to do all of these.
Any changes to the copy mode, write speed or session parameters
(described below) are erased from the Dupli 125’s memory once the unit is
turned off. When you turn the Dupli 125 on again, any changes to the default
settings will have been erased and the unit will have returned to its default
Copy settings.
4.1 Introduction to Copy mode
The COPY mode at maximum speed and close session is the Dupli 125’s default duplication
operation. To set another mode or change the duplication speed, you have to access the
SETUP (MODE CHANGE) menu and change the settings.
4.1.1 Various copy and verification functions
Function LCD message Description
Copy >> COPY ? Duplication from a master disc to blank discs.
Verify >> VERIFY ? Compares copied data with master data bit per
bit. The CD-DA, CD-ROM XA Form 2 and CD-
EXTRA formats cannot be verified.
Copy and verify >> COPY + V ? A two-phase operation. In the first phase, a
master CD is duplicated onto blank CDs. The
second phase compares the copied data bit by bit
with the master data. The CD-DA, CD-ROM XA
Form 2 and CD-EXTRA formats cannot be
verified.
Read check >> RD CHECK ? Checks whether copied discs can be properly
read or not.
Copy and read >> COPY + R ? A two-phase operation. In the first phase, a
master CD is duplicated onto blank CDs. The
second phase checks whether the copied discs
can be read properly or not.
When duplicating a master CD, do not mix CD-R and CD-RW media in the
target drives. When duplicating a master disc, use either only all CD-R or all
CD-RW media in the target drives. Likewise, use only CD-R/RW media that
support the same maximum write speed (10x, 12x, 16x, etc.). Otherwise, a
duplication error will occur, and your CD-R media may be unusable.
!
i

4.1.2 Write speeds
Speed / LCD message Description
>> FAST ? Copies at 24x-40x max. speed
>> MEDIUM ? Copies at 16x-24x speed
>> SLOW ? Copies at 4x speed
4.1.3 Session mode parameter
Session mode / LCD message Description
>> AUTO ? This is the default setting. The CDs will be duplicated
in accordance with the Master CD.
>> CLOSE ? Choosing this option closes the session after copying,
meaning that the disc can no longer be written to.
>> OPEN ? Choosing this option keeps the session open after
copying, meaning that you can write to this disc again if
desired.
Some CD or DVD drives and players do not support multi-session CDs or
multi-session CDs with an open final session. You may not be able to use
media burned on the Dupli using the open session option on such players or
drives. Refer to your drive’s or player’s documentation for more information.
4.2 Various duplication/verification scenarios
This section will take you step-by-step through the following scenarios for using the
Dupli 125.
• Copying a master CD to target CDs
