1. Administrator
In order to review, confirm, or redefine the software settings on your
LaCie professional server, you must have Administrative rights to the
device.

2. Shared Folders
Create Shared Folders on your LaCie professional server so that us-
ers and groups on the network may access data. It is easy to config-
ure SMB (Windows) and NFS (Linux) shares using Windows Storage
Server 2008 Server Manager while the ExtremeZ-IP Administrator
can set AFP (Mac) shares.
You may remotely set protocols, permissions, and quotas for each
Shared Folder. However, permissions that are based on active di-
rectory accounts must be set from the same network and domain as
your server.
TECHNICAL NOTE: Certain Windows Storage Server services must
be installed in order to set Shared Folders; File Services for SMB
shares and Services for Network File System for NFS shares. Both
services are installed on your LaCie professional server as a default.
SMB and NFS Shared Folders must also be created on a volume with
an assigned drive letter.
2.1. Creating SMB and NFS Shares
1. Log in to your LaCie professional server as an administrator.
2. Launch Server Manager using the desktop shortcut or
Start>Server Manager.
3. On the left of the Server Manager window, go to Roles>File
Services>Share and Storage Management. Click on the +
symbol to expand each section.
4. Right-click on Share and Storage Management and choose
Provision Share… This will launch the Provision a Shared
Folder Wizard.

5. From the Provision a Shared Folder Wizard, click the Browse...
button to launch the Browse For Folder window (Fig. 01). Click
on the + symbol to open one of the volumes if you are search-
ing for a specific Shared Folder. You can create a new Shared
Folder by clicking on one of the volumes and choosing Make
New Folder. Once the Shared Folder has been selected, click
OK to return to the Provision a Shared Folder Wizard.
6. Click Next> to move to NTFS Permissions. If you do not want to
make changes to NTFS permissions, skip the next step.
IMPORTANT INFO: LaCie highly recommends that customers
choose to manage their Shared Folders using either Share Protocols
or NTFS. Since they are essentially independent, changes to one
setting does not affect the other, which may cause confusion when
managing shared resources. For example, the most restrictive of the
two will be applied to all files in the volume.
7. To edit the NTFS permissions of a Shared Folder, select Yes,
change NTFS permissions and Edit Permissions... After the
changes have been made in the Permission for Shared Folder
window, click OK.
8. Click Next> to move to Share Protocols.

9. In Share Protocols you choose the protocol(s) that will be used
and the share name(s) (Fig. 02). Check the box or boxes that
correspond to the desired protocol(s) (SMB and/or NFS). For
each protocol, choose a Share name. When selecting both pro-
tocols, create different share names to avoid resolution issues.
10. Click Next> to move to SMB Settings.
11. SMB Settings allow you to add a description to a SMB Shared
Folder. To adjust the number of simultaneous users accessing
the Shared Folder or to change the availability settings of offline
folders, click Advanced...
12. Once finished with SMB Settings, click Next> for SMB Permis-
sions.

13. With SMB Permissions, you can manage the permissions for the
SMB Shared Folder (Fig. 04) such as read/write access for users
and groups. To assign custom permissions, choose Users and
groups have custom share permissions and click Permis-
sions...
14. Click Next> to move to NFS Permissions. (Skip the next step if
you did not select NFS in Share Protocols.)

15. Manage share permissions for the NFS share in NFS Permis-
sions. You can add specific Linux workstations by DNS name
(Fig. 05).
TECHNICAL NOTE: Additional settings are available for advanced
NFS configurations. Go to Server Manager>Roles>File Services
and right-click on Share and Storage Management. Select Edit
NFS configuration... for more NFS Shared Folder options.
Click Next> to move to Quota Policy.

16. With Quota Policy, you can limit the capacity of a Shared Folder
(Fig. 06). The quotas may be:
✦Hard - Users and groups will not be able to write data once
the Shared Folder limit has been reached. The user will be
notified that the limit has been reached.
✦Soft - Users and groups can still write data if the quota is
reached. For example, you can choose an “Extended Limit” or
a small “Extension” of the Shared Folder size.
TECHNICAL NOTE: There are predefined quota templates in
Quota Policy. However, to create custom quota templates or to en-
ter an email address for Shared Folder alerts, go to File Server Re-
source Manager. To set your custom quota template, go to Server
Manager>Roles>File Services>Share and Storage Manage-
ment. Right-click File Server Resource Manager and select Con-
figure Options... Please note that you cannot access File Server Re-
source Manager while running the Provision a Shared Folder Wizard.
17. Click Next> to move to File Screen Policy.

18. File Screen Policy can restrict and/or monitor files by their type
(Fig. 07). For example, media files such as .avi or .mp3 can be
blocked from a Shared Folder that is meant for text documents
only.
TECHNICAL NOTE: Similar to Quota Policy, there are predefined
quota templates in File Screen Policy. As well, custom file policy tem-
plates may be created in File Server Resource Manager that can fur-
ther limit the file types on a Shared Folder. To set your custom file pol-
icy template, go to Server Manager>Roles>File Services>Share
and Storage Management. Right-click File Server Resource Man-
ager and select Configure Options... Please note that you cannot
access File Server Resource Manager while running the Provision a
Shared Folder Wizard.
19. Click Next> to move to DFS Namespace Publishing.

20. DFS Namespace Publishing enables you to publish the Shared
Folder in a DFS Namespace (Fig. 08) (see Technical Brief: DFS
Namespace). The DFS Namespace may exist on your LaCie
professional server or another server on the network.
21. Click Next> to move to Review Settings and Create Share.

22. Before creating the Shared Folder, use Review Settings and Cre-
ate Share to make certain that the settings are correct (Fig. 09).
To make adjustments, choose <Previous. To execute the set-
tings, click Create.
You will see a Confirmation once the Shared Folder is created (Fig.
10). Click Close to exit the Provision a Shared Folder Wizard.

23. To view Shared Folders, go to Server Manager>Roles>File
Services and click once on Share and Storage Management
(Fig. 11).
To edit the parameters of a Shared Folder, double-click on its name.
You will find tabs and options for adjustments as well as the path for
access from a client workstation (Fig. 12).

2.2. Creating AFP Shares
With ExtremeZ-IP Administrator, you can create a new AFP Share or
migrate an existing SMB Shared Folder.
2.2.1. Migrate an Existing SMB Shared Folder
This is the most convenient method of sharing data via AFP when
a Shared Folder must include the SMB protocol. An existing SMB
Shared Folder must be available to perform the following steps.
1. Log in to your LaCie professional server as an administrator.
2. Launch ExtremeZ-IP Administrator, Start>ExtremeZ-IP Ad-
ministrator (Fig. 13).

4. The Volumes window displays a list of AFP Shared Folders (Fig.
14). When first opened, the only item is ExtremeZ-IP Print Sup-
port. Click Migrate SMB Shares...
5. Click Yes to the Volumes window prompt (Fig. 15).
6. Another Volumes window will appear, warning that permissions
set for the SMB shares do not apply to AFP shares (Fig. 16). In
general, you will manage AFP share permissions as you would
set folder, or NTFS permissions. (See the user manual for Extre-
meZ-IP Administrator for further information on managing AFP
share permissions). Click OK to continue.

7. The SMB Shared Folder has been migrated to AFP (Fig. 17). You
can access the Shared Folder settings or change its properties
by clicking Modify...
8. To access or modify the properties of the Shared Folder, select
it and click Modify...
2.2.2. Creating a new AFP Share in
ExtremeZ-IP Administrator
1. Log in to your LaCie professional server as an administrator.
2. Launch ExtremeZ-IP Administrator, Start>ExtremeZ-IP Ad-
ministrator.
3. Click Volumes.
4. Click Create.
5. Select the target volume (Computer>DATA or
Computer>SWAP), then choose an existing folder or Make a
new folder (Fig. 18). Click OK.
The Shared Folders created in ExtremeZ-IP Administrator are only
accessible to Mac users since they are not SMB. Shared Folder prop-
erties may be changed in Volumes>Modify.

2.2.3. Spotlight Support on AFP Shares
Spotlight may be turned on or off on each AFP Shared Folder or
enabled as a default for all AFP shares. Spotlight must be enabled
using ExtremeZ-IP Administrator.
1. Log in to your LaCie professional server as an administrator.
2. Launch ExtremeZ-IP Administrator, Start>ExtremeZ-IP Ad-
ministrator.
3. Click Settings.
4. Select the Search tab.
5. To enable Spotlight, check the box next to Support ‘Spotlight
Search’ Operations (Fig. 19). The box is not checked by de-
fault.
6. To enable Spotlight on all AFP volumes, check the box next to
Support Spotlight on all volumes (global) (Fig. 19).

7. To enable Spotlight on an individual AFP volume, return to the
ExtremeZ-IP Administrator main page. Click once on Volumes.
8. Select the AFP volume and click Modify...
9. Check the box next to Support Spotlight Searching. By de-
fault, it is not checked (Fig. 20).
10. Spotlight searches are now supported on the AFP Shared Folder.

2.2.4. Time Machine® Support on AFP
Shared Folders
Time Machine may be enabled on any AFP Shared Folder. How-
ever, Time Machine support disables additional features, such as
Spotlight. If Time Machine and Spotlight support are important, La-
Cie recommends creating one or more AFP Shared Folders that are
used for Time Machine backups only. Data files can be stored on
their own AFP Shared Folders where features such as Spotlight will
be available.
1. Log in to your LaCie professional server as an administrator.
2. Launch ExtremeZ-IP Administrator, Start>ExtremeZ-IP Ad-
ministrator.
3. Click once on Volumes.
a. Click once on the AFP Shared Folder that will be used
for Time Machine backups. Click Modify... to view the
Shared Folder’s properties.
or
b. Create a new AFP Shared Folder for Time Machine back-
ups. In the Volumes window, click Create... Create a new
Shared Folder in the DATA or SWAP volumes.
4. In the Volume Properties window, check the box next to Sup-
port Time Machine backup. The pop-up Confirm Support
Time Machine backup window will ask that you confirm the se-
lection. Click OK to continue.

5. Note that all other options will turn grey, indicating that they are
no longer available (Fig. 22).
6. You may also set general capacity quotas for the Time Machine
Shared Folder by checking the box next to Limit users without
custom quotas to (Fig. 22). To set precise quotas by Mac com-
puter, click Custom Quotas...
