3ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
It is very important that your new 9800 Series
Field Cultivator be properly assembled, adjusted
and lubricated before use. Illustrations in this sec-
tion show proper assembly procedures. Remove
paint from grease fittings. Replace any grease fit-
tings that are damaged or missing. Be sure to re-
turn screws, clips, etc., to their original locations.
To insure alignment of assemblies, leave the
nuts loose until completion of final assembly.
Use lock washers or flat washers as specified.
Spread all cotter pins.
After completion of final assembly, tighten all
nuts evenly to prevent misalignment, distortion or
binding. Tighten all screws and nuts to the recom-
mended torques shown in Tables 2-1and 2-2.
WARNING
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LIFT HEAVY
PARTS (SUCH AS THE FRAME, ROCK
SHAFT, AND PULL HITCH) MANU-
ALLY. USE A HOIST OR A FORK LIFT
TO MOVE THESE PARTS INTO POSI-
TION.
DANGER
TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL LOWER-
ING:
1. ALL HYDRAULICALLY ELEVATED
EQUIPMENT MUST BE LOCKED OUT
USING THE CYLINDER LOCKOUTS:
2. LOWER EQUIPMENT TO THE
GROUND WHILE SERVICING OR
WHEN IT IS IDLE.
FAILURE TO TAKE MEASURES TO
PREVENT ACCIDENTAL LOWERING
MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS PERSONAL
INJURY OR DEATH.
CAUTION
BE SURE DEPTH STOPS ARE EQUAL
LENGTHS ON ALL CYLINDERS. USING
UNEQUAL DEPTH STOP LENGTHS
CAN CAUSE PERMANENT EQUIP-
MENT DAMAGE.
CAUTION
BE SURE TO BLEED THE HYDRAULIC
SYSTEM OF ALL AIR IN LINES AFTER
INSTALLATION. FAILURE TO BLEED
THE SYSTEM OF ALL AIR CAN RE-
SULT IN PERMANENT EQUIPMENT
DAMAGE.

IMPORTANT
READ ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AT THE
FRONT OF THE SECTION BEFORE ATTEMPT-
ING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES.
3-1.1 Place frame halves on stands approxi-
mately 36" high.
3-1.2 Bolt frame halves together using 5/8-11 X
2-1/4 screws and lock nuts (See Figure 3-1).
WARNING
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LIFT HEAVY
PARTS (SUCH AS THE FRAME, ROCK
SHAFT, AND PULL HITCH) MANU-
ALLY. USE A HOIST OR A FORK LIFT
TO MOVE THESE PARTS INTO POSI-
TION.
3-2 WING AND EXTENSION INSTALLATION
WARNING
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LIFT HEAVY
PARTS (SUCH AS THE FRAME, ROCK
SHAFT, AND PULL HITCH) MANU-
ALLY. USE A HOIST OR A FORK LIFT
TO MOVE THESE PARTS INTO POSI-
TION.
3-2.1 On 981551 and 981554 models, bolt inner
wing halves together using 5/8-11 x 2-1/4
hex head cap screws and hex lock nuts (See
Figure 3-3).
3-2.2 On all models, install wings using pins,
washers and cotter pins provided. (See Fig-
ure 3-1).
3-2.3 Slide nylatron depth adjust bushing into
frame bracket on wing. Bolt bushing into
place using 1/4-20 x 2 hex head cap screws
and hex lock nuts. Insert threaded depth ad-
just rod weldment into bushing and screw
into depth adjustment rod to desired depth.
(See Figure 3-4).
3-2.4 On 980321, 980327, 980332, 980545,
981336, and 981549 models, extensions are
attached to the frame 180ofrom where they
should be installed. Loosen hex lock nuts
and remove u-bolts. Flip the wing extension
over to the outside of the outer frame and in-
stall wing extensions on wings using same
u-bolts and hex lock nuts (See Figure 3-2).
3-2.5 For 980545 and 981549 models, install 5”
extension to outer wing plate with 5/8-11 x
2-1/4 hex head cap screws and hex lock
nuts (See Figure 3-2).
3-2.6 On 5-section models, install outer wings
using pins, washers and cotter pins provided.
(See Figure 3-2).
3-3 ROCKSHAFT INSTALLATION
3-3.1 All rockshafts and hubs come already as-
sembled from the factory.
3-3.2 Mount tires on the wheels and install on
hubs.
3-3.3 For 980333, 980535, 981534, and 981537
