Leak Gopher Series 2000 Water Heater
Leak Detector – Valve Controller
LGLDVC 3.6VDC
Quick Start Guide
The Leak Gopher Leak Detector - Valve Controller is an all in one device to protect your
home or business from water leaks. The Leak Gopher Leak Detector – Valve Controller is
designed to sense the presence of water, sound an audible alarm and turn the water off
automatically.
You can also operate the valve directly using on and off buttons located on the front of the
Leak Gopher Leak Detector – Valve Controller.
The Leak Gopher Leak Detector - Valve Controller is designed for those applications where
the area or appliance you want to monitor for water leaks (i.e. water heater) and the water
line where you want to install the electronic water valve are located in the same location.
You can locate the electronic water valve anywhere and connect it to the Leak Gopher
using six conductor telephone wires and connectors.
The Leak Gopher Leak Detector - Valve Controller can be powered using the 3.6 VDC wall
cube adapter (included) or a 9 VDC battery (included). If the battery is installed and the
wall cube is attached to the device and plugged into a standard 110VAC power outlet, the
battery will serve as backup power in the case of a power outage.
To install the 9VDC battery, remove the four screws securing the lid to the base and
carefully remove the top. There is a ribbon cable that attaches the lid to the base so care
should be taken not to damage the ribbon cable. Attach the 9VDC battery to the battery
connector located in the battery compartment and reattach the lid to the base.
If the battery is not installed and the device is powered by the wall cube, the Leak Gopher
will sound a low battery chirp. It will also sound this chirp when the battery is low and needs
to be replaced.
*** CAUTION ***
Do NOT insert fingers into the valve as this may cause serious injury!
How to install the Leak Gopher Leak Detector – Valve Controller
1. Determine where you want to mount the Leak Gopher Leak Detector - Valve
Controller and secure it to the wall using the mounting holes located in the top
and bottom of the device.
2. Determine the area where you want to place the Leak Gopher water sensor. A
low profile water sensor is available if you need to place the sensor under
appliances, etc. Visit www.leakintel.com for more information.
3. Plug the Duplex Adapter (included) into the RJ-11 connector on the bottom of the
Leak Gopher.
4. The water sensor has a 2-meter telephone wire attached.
5. If the 2-meter telephone wire from the water sensor will reach, plug it into the
Duplex Adapter on the bottom of the Leak Gopher.
6. You can use standard telephone wires (4 wire) and connectors to extend the
water sensor wire to the leak Gopher. The water sensor uses the center two
wires, usually red and green, just in case you want to attach the telephone wires
to a biscuit connector, etc)
7. You can use standard telephone duplex adapters (splitters) to install multiple
water sensors to the Leak Gopher.

8. Install the electronic water valve (see below).
9. Plug the water valve into the Duplex Adapter.
10. You can use standard telephone wires (4 wire) and connectors to extend the
valve wire to the leak Gopher. The water sensor uses the outside two wires, just
in case you want to attach the telephone wires to a biscuit connector, etc)
11. Plug the wall cube (included) into the bottom of the Leak Gopher.
12. The Leak Gopher will beep and a light on the front will blink.
13. Make sure the valve is open.
How to install the Leak Gopher Electronic Water Valve
Building Codes are different in every State and Locality. In many areas Building Codes require a
licensed plumber and possibly a permit to modify or install plumbing fixtures. Please check with
your Building Codes department or contact a licensed plumber to find out what is required in
your area.
Determining where to locate the Leak Gopher electronic water valve is an important part of
the installation process. While outside the scope of these instructions, the optimum place to
locate the valve is where it can turn off all of the water entering the premises to be
protected. In a residential setting this is typically on the main water line coming into the
house. Variations in plumbing make it impossible to provide detailed installation
instructions for your installation. The following instructions will only serve as a guide. Your
situation may require more connectors, rerouting the water line, or some other changes in
the procedures. It is your responsibility to check with your local codes department to
determine if a licensed plumber is required to install the Electronic Water Valve.
Install the Electronic Valve
1. Turn off the water to the premises. FAILURE TO TURN OFF ALL OF THE
WATER TO THE PREMISES WHERE THE VALVE IS BEING INSTALLED WILL
RESULT IN FLOODING!
2. On a straight section of the water line, AFTER THE WATER SHUT OFF VALVE,
make two marks 12” apart where you want to install the valve.
3. Cut the pipe on the two marks that are 12” apart.
4. These instructions assume you are using SharkBite connectors. You will need to
modify these instructions if you are not using SharkBite connectors.
5. After removing the 12” cut section, make a mark 1” back from the end of both
pipes where the connectors will be attached. These marks will help you insure the
SharkBite Connectors are pushed all the way onto the pipe for proper installation.
6. Wrap Teflon plumbing tape around the SharkBite connector threads 8 times,
apply pipe sealant to the threads and screw it into the water inlet side of the
electronic water valve and tighten it securely using two slip joint pliers or
wrenches.
7. Wrap Teflon plumbing tape around the SharkBite connector threads 8 times,
apply pipe sealant to the threads and screw it into the water outlet side of the
electronic water valve and tighten it securely using two slip joint pliers or
wrenches.
8. Slide the SharkBite Connector attached to the inlet side of the valve onto the
incoming water line. Be sure the SharkBite Connector is all the way on the pipe.
9. Slide the SharkBite Connector attached to the outlet side of the valve onto the
outgoing water line. Be sure the SharkBite Connector is all the way on the pipe.
10. Slowly turn the water on to the premises while carefully checking for leaks.
11. The electronic water valve has a 2-meter telephone wire attached.
12. If the 2-meter telephone wire from the electronic water valve will reach, plug it
into the Duplex Adapter.
13. You can get a 6 conductor 14 foot telephone wire and connector to extend the
valve wire at www.leakintel.com. You can also install a biscuit or other device to
extend the wire but care should be taken not to reverse the polarity on wires 2 &
5 and 1 & 6. Wires 2 & 5 open and aloes the valve. Wires 1 & 6 report the valve
position to the Leak Gopher.

Testing the Leak Detector – Valve Controller
1. Place the water sensor into a container with water.
2. The Leak Detector will sound an audible alarm. The alarm will repeat every 10
seconds.
3. The electronic water valve will close.
4. To turn off the audible alarm, press the Silence button on the front of the Leak
Gopher under the off button for 3 seconds.
5. The electronic water valve will remain closed.
6. You must wait one minute after the electronic water valve closes before starting
the opening procedure. This allows the valve time to fully close.
7. Remove the water sensor form the water and dry it off.
8. To open the electronic water valve, press the On button on the front of the Leak
Gopher.
9. The electronic water valve will open.
That’s it! Be sure to leave the electronic water valve open!
Your home or business is now protected. If the Leak Gopher senses water it will
automatically turn the water off. The audible alarm will continue to sound until you press
theSilence button, even if the water at the water sensor dries.
There are other models of the Leak Gophers that work wireless with your Z-Wave enabled
security system, other Z-Wave Controllers or using the Leak Gophers very own wireless
technology. There is a Leak Gopher with a Wireless Valve Controller to allow the Electronic
Valve to be located away form the Wireless Leak Detector and not connected using wires.
There is a Leak Gopher Manual Valve Controller to simply turn water off and on at the
press of a button. Visit www.leakintel.com for more information.
