Installation & operating instructions
2Handling.
Don’t force connector and knobs: they have been designed to respond to a light
touch and could be damaged if treated with excessive force.
2Protection and maintenance.
To avoid jeopardizing correct operation, it is best not to position the enclosure for
long periods in exposed places (damp, high temperature, etc.), in dusty environments
or those subject to strong vibrations. On this subject, it’s advisable to always leave the protective grille
mounted on the enclosure. In the event of breakdown, do not open the enclosure, but contact the nearest
GENERALMUSIC Service Centre.
2Connections.
It is a good rule to connect loudspeaker enclosures and amplifiers with the latter switched off, thus avoiding
signal peaks, which can be annoying and sometimes dangerous for the loudspeaker enclosures
themselves.
2Conservation of documentation and packing.
Keep this user’s handbook for future reference. Keep all the packing material as well for future shipments.
Remember that on the secondhand market, products always have better valuation if, as well as being in
good condition, they also have their original documentation and packing.
AMPLIFIED VERSION ONLY
2Connections and prevention or identification of possible interference.
Avoid installing your equipment in the vicinity of radios, televisions, etc., since this could cause noisy
disturbance. When connecting other equipment to your sound system, pay close attention to so-called
earth-loops, which can cause hum: in the event of interference, try using the EARTH switch on the
enclosure’s control panel.
2Connection to the mains supply.
Before connecting the enclosure to the mains supply, make certain that the current corresponds with
that indicated on the rear of the unit (there is an allowance of ±10%). Always connect the power cable to
the enclosure before switching on the enclosure and always remove it after having switched off.
2Switching on and off.
Remember to always connect or disconnect other equipment with the enclosure off and to always switch
on the mixer first, then the enclosure: in this manner, annoying and often dangerous peaks are avoided.
The SIGN/COMP LED may light up for a few moments when the mixer is switched on.
2Connector cables.
When connecting amplified enclosures to the mixer, make certain to always use only signal cables
(screened cables made up of two wires plus a braid/screen) and not power cables (speaker cables made
up of just two wires, normally with a larger cross-section): the use of unscreened cables could in fact
probably cause annoying hum and noise. Take good care of the connector cables, very frequently the
cause of problems. Always grip them by the plugs, never pull the cables, and always avoid knots and
twists when coiling them: they will last longer and be more reliable, a great advantage.

Introduction

5
SPX LIVE & MEDIA connection panel
The connection panels of the SPX LIVE & MEDIA models in the passive version have two different types
of connectors.
JACK CONNECTIONS
The jack connectors are normally used with amplifiers and amplified mixers which have a jack power
output. The two jack connectors are connected in parallel to send the power towards a second
loudspeaker.
PUSH TERMINAL CONNECTIONS
Provide fast connection and easy phase distinction. The type of cable to use is colour coded: red for the
(+) and black for (-)(see ➪connection examples).

SPX LIVE & MEDIA ACTIVE connection panel
SPX LIVE & MEDIA ACTIVE connection panel
INPUT BAL 0dB
Balanced COMBO connector (0 dB / 30 kOhms):
The SPX LIVE and SPX MEDIA Active models have a COMBO type input connector. This connector,
which can receives both JACK and XLR-M plugs, makes it possible to connect the input signal easily
and quickly. The input of the loudspeaker’s internal amplifier can receive balanced or unbalanced high
impedance line signals which come from high level output equipments.
LINK 0dB
XLR-M balanced connector (0 dB / 30 kOhms): it’s connected in parallel with the input connector to
enable the signal to be sent on to a second unit (e.g. another enclosure). In this way, using the same
signal, it is possible to drive more than one loudspeaker and therefore to create bigger sound systems.
INPUT UNBAL -10dB
RCA pin unbalanced connector (-10 dB / 15 kOhms): SPX LIVE and SPX MEDIA Active models have
an RCA pin input connector which can receive unbalanced, high impedance line signals from high level
output equipments, such as CD players, cassette recorders, multimedia boards etc.

7
LINK UNBAL -10dB
RCA pin connector unbalanced (-10 dB / 15 kOhms): it’s connected in parallel with the input connector
to enable the signal to be sent to a second unit. In this way, using the same signal it is possible to drive
more than one loudspeaker.
SIGN/CLIP
Indicator LED: this is a two-tone LED (green/red) able to show 3 different conditions:
a) off: no signal
b) green/SIGNAL: external signal present (minimum level: -26dB)
c) red/COMPRESSOR: internal compressor operating. It indicates when the compressor starts operating
following the detection of an excessively high signal level being fed out by the system amplifiers. In this
case, the compressor lowers the signal level to avoid damage to the enclosure components and
amplifier clipping. The compressor threshold and time values have been carefully studied and assessed
in order to keep the signal within safety levels and avoid reduced dynamics.
IMPORTANT ➪when the COMPRESSOR LED lights up, this doesn’t indicate a normal operating
condition, but the intervention of a circuit for safeguarding the system in emergency situations. So to
obtain the best results as far as tone response and power output are concerned, it is advisable to prevent
the LED from lighting up regularly.
VOLUME
Control of the signal level sent to the built-in amplifier: operates with continuous values ranging from
fully closed (“∞”position: the signal is not sent to the amplifier) to fully open (“0dB”position: the signal is
sent to the amplifier at the same level at which it arrives on the input). In other words, this control is
used to cut the external signal sent to the amplifier.
SHIELD
Control for separating the electrical earth from that of the chassis: under certain conditions, this
selector can enable to break earth loops which can form when several units are connected together and
often cause hum or other annoying noises.
POWER

SPX SUB ACTIVE connection panel
SPX SUB ACTIVE connection panel
INPUT
Balanced XLR-F + JACK connectors (0 dB / 30 kOhms): SPX SUB has two input connectors connected
in parallel, to enable the signal to be sent on to a second unit (e.g. another enclosure). The internal power
amplifier input can receive balanced or unbalanced high impedance line signals from high level output
units. SPX SUB has two independent LEFT & RIGHT inputs (XLR-F+JACK): this enables the sub-woofer
to be used in STEREO (1 sub + 2 satellites) or MONO (2 subs + 4 satellites).
VOLUME
Control of the signal level sent to the built-in amplifier: operates with continuous values ranging from
fully closed (“∞”position: the signal is not sent to the amplifier) to fully open (“0dB”position: the signal is
sent to the amplifier at the same level at which it arrives on the input). In other words, this control is used
to cut the external signal sent to the amplifier. In the SPX SUB the volume control regulates the signal
sent to the built-in amplifier: therefore, using this control only the sub-woofer volume and NOT the satellite
volume will be modified.

X-OVER
Control for selecting the frequency of the SPX SUB built-in crossover. SPX SUB has a built-in 12dB/
oct. electronic crossover with variable frequency, which separates the signal sent to the internal amplifier
(low frequencies) from the signal sent to the satellites (mid-high frequencies). This selector enables to
choose the crossover frequency in a continuous range of values from a minimum of 80Hz to a maximum
of 320Hz. This function can be extremely useful, as the ideal crossover frequency can often vary
considerably according to the type of satellite used, the type of signal to be reproduced or the environment
in which the system is used. We therefore suggest that a series of tests be carried out when the system
is installed and a decision taken according to requirements and personal taste.
OUTPUT
XLR-M + JACK connectors: SPX SUB has two balanced LEFT & RIGHT outputs with double connector,
to enable the use of the system in STEREO or MONO.
The following are the connections to carry out for these setups.
•STEREO configuration (see ➪Connection examples):
RIGHT CHANNEL ➪connect the mixer’s RIGHT output to the sub-woofer’s RIGHT input and the sub-
woofer’s RIGHT output to the RIGHT input of the powered enclosure;
LEFT CHANNEL ➪connect the mixer’s LEFT output to the sub-woofer’s LEFT input and the sub-woofer’s
LEFT output to the LEFT input of the powered enclosure.
MONO configuration (see ➪Connection example):
RIGHT CHANNEL ➪connect the mixer’s RIGHT output to one of the two inputs (LEFT or RIGHT) of the
RIGHT-HAND sub-woofer and the corresponding sub-woofer output to the input of the RIGHT-HAND
amplified enclosure or the RIGHT-HAND channel of the power amplifier;
LEFT CHANNEL ➪connect the mixer’s LEFT output to one of the two inputs (LEFT or RIGHT) of the
LEFT-HAND sub-woofer and the corresponding sub-woofer output to the input of the LEFT-HAND amplified
enclosure or the LEFT-HAND channel of the power amplifier.
SHIELD
