Chapter1.Saetyinormation
Thischaptercontainsthesafetyinformationthatyouneedtobefamiliarwithbeforeservicingacomputer.
Generalsaety
Followtheserulestoensuregeneralsafety:
•Observegoodhousekeepingintheareaofthemachinesduringandaftermaintenance.
•Whenliftinganyheavyobject:
1.Ensureyoucanstandsafelywithoutslipping.
2.Distributetheweightoftheobjectequallybetweenyourfeet.
3.Useaslowliftingforce.Nevermovesuddenlyortwistwhenyouattempttolift.
4.Liftbystandingorbypushingupwithyourlegmuscles;thisactionremovesthestrainfromthe
musclesinyourback.
Attention:
Donotattempttoliftanyobjectsthatweighmorethan16kg(35lb)orobjectsthatyouthinkare
tooheavyforyou.
•Donotperformanyactionthatcauseshazardstothecustomerorthatmakestheequipmentunsafe.
•Beforeyoustartthemachineensurethatotherservicerepresentativesandthecustomer'spersonnelare
notinahazardousposition.
•Placeremovedcoversandotherpartsinasafeplaceawayfromallpersonnelwhileyouareservicing
themachine.
•Keepyourtoolcaseawayfromwalkareassothatotherpeoplewillnottripoverit.
•Donotwearlooseclothingthatcanbetrappedinthemovingpartsofamachine.Ensurethatyoursleeves
arefastenedorrolledupaboveyourelbows.Ifyourhairislongfastenit.
•Inserttheendsofyournecktieorscarfinsideclothingorfastenitwithanonconductiveclipapproximately
8centimeters(3inches)fromtheend.
•Donotwearjewelrychainsmetal-frameeyeglassesormetalfastenersforyourclothing.
Remember:Metalobjectsaregoodelectricalconductors.
•Wearsafetyglasseswhenyouare:hammeringdrillingsolderingcuttingwireattachingspringsusing
solventsorworkinginanyotherconditionsthatmightbehazardoustoyoureyes.
•Afterservicereinstallallsafetyshieldsguardslabelsandgroundwires.Replaceanysafetydevice
thatiswornordefective.
•Reinstallallcoverscorrectlybeforereturningthemachinetothecustomer.
Electricalsaety
CAUTION:
Electricalcurrentrompower,telephone,andcommunicationcablescanbehazardous.Toavoid
personalinjuryorequipmentdamage,disconnecttheattachedpowercords,telecommunication

systems,networks,andmodemsbeoreyouopenthecomputercovers,unlessinstructedotherwise
intheinstallationandconfigurationprocedures.
Observethefollowingruleswhenworkingonelectricalequipment.
Important:Useonlyapprovedtoolsandtestequipment.Somehandtoolshavehandlescoveredwithasoft
materialthatdoesnotinsulateyouwhenworkingwithliveelectricalcurrents.Manycustomershavenear
theirequipmentrubberfloormatsthatcontainsmallconductivefiberstodecreaseelectrostaticdischarges.
Donotusethistypeofmattoprotectyourselffromelectricalshock.
•Findtheroomemergencypower-off(EPO)switchdisconnectingswitchorelectricaloutlet.Ifanelectrical
accidentoccursyoucanthenoperatetheswitchorunplugthepowercordquickly.
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardousconditionsornearequipmentthathashazardousvoltages.
•Disconnectallpowerbefore:
–Performingamechanicalinspection
–Workingnearpowersupplies
–RemovingorinstallingFieldReplaceableUnits(FRUs)
•Beforeyoustarttoworkonthemachineunplugthepowercord.Ifyoucannotunplugitaskthecustomer
topower-offthewallboxthatsuppliespowertothemachineandtolockthewallboxintheoffposition.
•Ifyouneedtoworkonamachinethathasexposedelectricalcircuitsobservethefollowingprecautions:
–Ensurethatanotherpersonfamiliarwiththepower-offcontrolsisnearyou.
Remember:Anotherpersonmustbetheretoswitchoffthepowerifnecessary.
–Useonlyonehandwhenworkingwithpowered-onelectricalequipment;keeptheotherhandinyour
pocketorbehindyourback.
Remember:Theremustbeacompletecircuittocauseelectricalshock.Byobservingtheaboverule
youmaypreventacurrentfrompassingthroughyourbody.
–Whenusingatestersetthecontrolscorrectlyandusetheapprovedprobeleadsandaccessoriesfor
thattester.
–Standonsuitablerubbermats(obtainedlocallyifnecessary)toinsulateyoufromgroundssuchas
metalfloorstripsandmachineframes.
Observethespecialsafetyprecautionswhenyouworkwithveryhighvoltages;theseinstructionsarein
thesafetysectionsofmaintenanceinformation.Useextremecarewhenmeasuringhighvoltages.
•Regularlyinspectandmaintainyourelectricalhandtoolsforsafeoperationalcondition.
•Donotusewornorbrokentoolsandtesters.
•Neverassumethatpowerhasbeendisconnectedfromacircuit.Firstcheckthatithasbeenpowered-off.
•Alwayslookcarefullyforpossiblehazardsinyourworkarea.Examplesofthesehazardsaremoistfloors
nongroundedpowerextensioncablespowersurgesandmissingsafetygrounds.
•Donottouchliveelectricalcircuitswiththereflectivesurfaceofaplasticdentalmirror.Thesurfaceis
conductive;suchtouchingcancausepersonalinjuryandmachinedamage.
•Donotservicethefollowingpartswiththepoweronwhentheyareremovedfromtheirnormaloperating
placesinamachine:
–Powersupplyunits
–Pumps
–Blowersandfans
–Motorgenerators
andsimilarunits.(Thispracticeensurescorrectgroundingoftheunits.)
•Ifanelectricalaccidentoccurs:

–Switchoffpower.
–Sendanotherpersontogetmedicalaid.
Saetyinspectionguide
Theintentofthisinspectionguideistoassistyouinidentifyingpotentiallyunsafeconditionsonthese
products.Eachmachineasitwasdesignedandbuilthadrequiredsafetyitemsinstalledtoprotectusers
andservicepersonnelfrominjury.Thisguideaddressesonlythoseitems.Howevergoodjudgmentshould
beusedtoidentifypotentialsafetyhazardsduetoattachmentoffeaturesoroptionsnotcoveredbythis
inspectionguide.
Ifanyunsafeconditionsarepresentyoumustdeterminehowserioustheapparenthazardcouldbeand
whetheryoucancontinuewithoutfirstcorrectingtheproblem.
Considertheseconditionsandthesafetyhazardstheypresent:
•Electricalhazardsespeciallyprimarypower(primaryvoltageontheframecancauseseriousorfatal
electricalshock).
•ExplosivehazardssuchasadamagedCRTfaceorbulgingcapacitor
•Mechanicalhazardssuchaslooseormissinghardware
Theguideconsistsofaseriesofstepspresentedinachecklist.Beginthecheckswiththepoweroffand
thepowercorddisconnected.
Checklist:
1.Checkexteriorcoversfordamage(loosebrokenorsharpedges).
2.Power-offthecomputer.Disconnectthepowercord.
3.Checkthepowercordfor:
a.Athird-wiregroundconnectoringoodcondition.Useametertomeasurethird-wireground
continuityfor0.1ohmorlessbetweentheexternalgroundpinandframeground.
b.Thepowercordshouldbetheappropriatetypeasspecifiedinthepartslistings.
c.Insulationmustnotbefrayedorworn.
4.Removethecover.
5.Checkforanyobviousalterations.Usegoodjudgmentastothesafetyofanyalterations.
6.Checkinsidetheunitforanyobviousunsafeconditionssuchasmetalfilingscontaminationwateror
otherliquidsorsignsoffireorsmokedamage.
7.Checkforwornfrayedorpinchedcables.
8.Checkthatthepower-supplycoverfasteners(screwsorrivets)havenotbeenremovedortamperedwith.
Handlingelectrostaticdischarge-sensitivedevices
Anycomputerpartcontainingtransistorsorintegratedcircuits(ICs)shouldbeconsideredsensitiveto
electrostaticdischarge(ESD).ESDdamagecanoccurwhenthereisadifferenceinchargebetweenobjects.
ProtectagainstESDdamagebyequalizingthechargesothatthemachinetheparttheworkmatandthe
personhandlingthepartareallatthesamecharge.
Notes:
1.Useproduct-specificESDprocedureswhentheyexceedtherequirementsnotedhere.
2.MakesurethattheESDprotectivedevicesyouusehavebeencertified(ISO9000)asfullyeffective.

WhenhandlingESD-sensitiveparts:
•Keepthepartsinprotectivepackagesuntiltheyareinsertedintotheproduct.
•Avoidcontactwithotherpeoplewhilehandlingthepart.
•Wearagroundedwriststrapagainstyourskintoeliminatestaticonyourbody.
•Preventthepartfromtouchingyourclothing.Mostclothingisinsulativeandretainsachargeeven
whenyouarewearingawriststrap.
•Usetheblacksideofagroundedworkmattoprovideastatic-freeworksurface.Thematisespecially
usefulwhenhandlingESD-sensitivedevices.
•Selectagroundingsystemsuchasthoselistedbelowtoprovideprotectionthatmeetsthespecific
servicerequirement.
Note:TheuseofagroundingsystemisdesirablebutnotrequiredtoprotectagainstESDdamage.
–AttachtheESDgroundcliptoanyframegroundgroundbraidorgreen-wireground.
–UseanESDcommongroundorreferencepointwhenworkingonadouble-insulatedor
battery-operatedsystem.Youcanusecoaxorconnector-outsideshellsonthesesystems.
–Usetheroundground-prongoftheacplugonac-operatedcomputers.
Groundingrequirements
Electricalgroundingofthecomputerisrequiredforoperatorsafetyandcorrectsystemfunction.Proper
groundingoftheelectricaloutletcanbeverifiedbyacertifiedelectrician.
