About this manual
This manual pro ides ser ice and reference information for Leno o® computers listed on the front co er.
Illustrations in this manual might look different from your product.
Use this manual along with the ad anced diagnostic tests to troubleshoot problems.
Important: This manual is intended only for trained ser ice technicians who are familiar with Leno o
computers. Use this manual along with the ad anced diagnostic tests to troubleshoot problems effecti ely.
Before ser icing a Leno o computer, be sure to read and understand Chapter 1 “Important safety
information” on page 1.

Chapter 1. Important safety information
General safety
Follow these rules to ensure general safety:
• Obser e good housekeeping in the area of the machines during and after maintenance.
• When lifting any hea y object:
1. Ensure you can stand safely without slipping.
2. Distribute the weight of the object equally between your feet.
3. Use a slow lifting force. Ne er mo e suddenly or twist when you attempt to lift.
4. Lift by standing or by pushing up with your leg muscles; this action remo es the strain from the
muscles in your back.
Attention: Do not attempt to lift any objects that weigh more than 16 kg (35 lb) or objects that you
think are too hea y for you.
• Do not perform any action that causes hazards to the customer, or that makes the equipment unsafe.
• Before you start the machine, ensure that other ser ice representati es and the customer's personnel are
not in a hazardous position.
• Place remo ed co ers and other parts in a safe place, away from all personnel, while you are ser icing the
machine.
• Keep your tool case away from walk areas so that other people will not trip o er it.
• Do not wear loose clothing that can be trapped in the mo ing parts of a machine. Ensure that your slee es
are fastened or rolled up abo e your elbows. If your hair is long, fasten it.
• Insert the ends of your necktie or scarf inside clothing or fasten it with a nonconducti e clip, approximately
8 centimeters (3 inches) from the end.
• Do not wear jewelry, chains, metal-frame eyeglasses, or metal fasteners for your clothing.
Remember: Metal objects are good electrical conductors.
• Wear safety glasses when you are: hammering, drilling, soldering, cutting wire, attaching springs, using
sol ents, or working in any other conditions that might be hazardous to your eyes.
• After ser ice, reinstall all safety shields, guards, labels, and ground wires. Replace any safety de ice that
is worn or defecti e.
• Reinstall all co ers correctly before returning the machine to the customer.
CAUTION:
Keep fingers and other parts of your body away from hazardous, moving parts. If you suffer an injury,
seek medi al are immediately.
CAUTION:
Avoid onta t with hot omponents inside the omputer. During operation, some omponents
be ome hot enough to burn the skin. Before you open the omputer over, turn off the omputer,
dis onne t power, and wait approximately 10 minutes for the omponents to ool.

Ele tri al safety
CAUTION:
Ele tri al urrent from power, telephone, and ommuni ation ables an be hazardous. To avoid
personal injury or equipment damage, dis onne t the atta hed power ords, tele ommuni ation
systems, networks, and modems before you open the omputer overs, unless instru ted otherwise
in the installation and onfiguration pro edures.
Obser e the following rules when working on electrical equipment.
Important: Use only appro ed tools and test equipment. Some hand tools ha e handles co ered with a soft
material that does not insulate you when working with li e electrical currents. Many customers ha e, near
their equipment, rubber floor mats that contain small conducti e fibers to decrease electrostatic discharges.
Do not use this type of mat to protect yourself from electrical shock.
• Find the room emergency power-off (EPO) switch, disconnecting switch, or electrical outlet. If an electrical
accident occurs, you can then operate the switch or unplug the power cord quickly.
• Do not work alone under hazardous conditions or near equipment that has hazardous oltages.
• Disconnect all power before:
– Performing a mechanical inspection
– Working near power supplies
– Remo ing or installing Field Replaceable Units (FRUs)
• Before you start to work on the machine, unplug the power cord. If you cannot unplug it, ask the customer
to power-off the wall box that supplies power to the machine and to lock the wall box in the off position.
• If you need to work on a machine that has exposed electrical circuits, obser e the following precautions:
– Ensure that another person, familiar with the power-off controls, is near you.
Remember: Another person must be there to switch off the power, if necessary.
– Use only one hand when working with powered-on electrical equipment; keep the other hand in your
pocket or behind your back.
Remember: There must be a complete circuit to cause electrical shock. By obser ing the abo e rule,
you may pre ent a current from passing through your body.
– When using a tester, set the controls correctly and use the appro ed probe leads and accessories for
that tester.
– Stand on suitable rubber mats (obtained locally, if necessary) to insulate you from grounds such as
metal floor strips and machine frames.
Obser e the special safety precautions when you work with ery high oltages; these instructions are in
the safety sections of maintenance information. Use extreme care when measuring high oltages.
• Regularly inspect and maintain your electrical hand tools for safe operational condition.
• Do not use worn or broken tools and testers.
• Never assume that power has been disconnected from a circuit. First, check that it has been powered-off.
• Always look carefully for possible hazards in your work area. Examples of these hazards are moist floors,
nongrounded power extension cables, power surges, and missing safety grounds.
• Do not touch li e electrical circuits with the reflecti e surface of a plastic dental mirror. The surface is
conducti e; such touching can cause personal injury and machine damage.

• Do not ser ice the following parts with the power on when they are remo ed from their normal operating
places in a machine:
– Power supply units
– Pumps
– Blowers and fans
– Motor generators
and similar units. (This practice ensures correct grounding of the units.)
• If an electrical accident occurs:
– Use caution; do not become a ictim yourself.
– Switch off power.
– Send another person to get medical aid.
Safety inspe tion guide
The intent of this inspection guide is to assist you in identifying potentially unsafe conditions on these
products. Each machine, as it was designed and built, had required safety items installed to protect users
and ser ice personnel from injury. This guide addresses only those items. Howe er, good judgment should
be used to identify potential safety hazards due to attachment of features or options not co ered by this
inspection guide.
If any unsafe conditions are present, you must determine how serious the apparent hazard could be and
whether you can continue without first correcting the problem.
Consider these conditions and the safety hazards they present:
• Electrical hazards, especially primary power (primary oltage on the frame can cause serious or fatal
electrical shock).
• Explosi e hazards, such as a damaged CRT face or bulging capacitor
• Mechanical hazards, such as loose or missing hardware
The guide consists of a series of steps presented in a checklist. Begin the checks with the power off, and the
power cord disconnected.
Checklist:
1. Check exterior co ers for damage (loose, broken, or sharp edges).
2. Power-off the computer. Disconnect the power cord.
3. Check the power cord for:
a. A third-wire ground connector in good condition. Use a meter to measure third-wire ground
continuity for 0.1 ohm or less between the external ground pin and frame ground.
b. The power cord should be the appropriate type as specified in the parts listings.
c. Insulation must not be frayed or worn.
4. Remo e the co er.
5. Check for any ob ious alterations. Use good judgment as to the safety of any alterations.
6. Check inside the unit for any ob ious unsafe conditions, such as metal filings, contamination, water or
other liquids, or signs of fire or smoke damage.
7. Check for worn, frayed, or pinched cables.

8. Check that the power-supply co er fasteners (screws or ri ets) ha e not been remo ed or tampered
with.
Handling ele trostati dis harge-sensitive devi es
Any computer part containing transistors or integrated circuits (ICs) should be considered sensiti e to
electrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD damage can occur when there is a difference in charge between objects.
Protect against ESD damage by equalizing the charge so that the machine, the part, the work mat, and the
person handling the part are all at the same charge.
Notes:
1. Use product-specific ESD procedures when they exceed the requirements noted here.
2. Make sure that the ESD protecti e de ices you use ha e been certified (ISO 9000) as fully effecti e.
When handling ESD-sensiti e parts:
• Keep the parts in protecti e packages until they are inserted into the product.
• A oid contact with other people while handling the part.
• Wear a grounded wrist strap against your skin to eliminate static on your body.
• Pre ent the part from touching your clothing. Most clothing is insulati e and retains a charge e en when
you are wearing a wrist strap.
• Use the black side of a grounded work mat to pro ide a static-free work surface. The mat is especially
useful when handling ESD-sensiti e de ices.
• Select a grounding system, such as those listed below, to pro ide protection that meets the specific
ser ice requirement.
Note: The use of a grounding system is desirable but not required to protect against ESD damage.
– Attach the ESD ground clip to any frame ground, ground braid, or green-wire ground.
– Use an ESD common ground or reference point when working on a double-insulated or battery-
operated system. You can use coax or connector-outside shells on these systems.
– Use the round ground-prong of the ac plug on ac-operated computers.
Grounding requirements
Electrical grounding of the computer is required for operator safety and correct system function. Proper
grounding of the electrical outlet can be erified by a certified electrician.

DANGER
Electrical current from power, telephone and communication cables is hazardous.
To avoid a sho k hazard:
• Do not onne t or dis onne t any ables or perform installation, maintenan e, or re onfiguration
of this produ t during an ele tri al storm.
• Conne t all power ords to a properly wired and grounded ele tri al outlet.
• Conne t to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be atta hed to this produ t.
• When possible, use one hand only to onne t or dis onne t signal ables.
• Never turn on any equipment when there is eviden e of fire, water, or stru tural damage.
• Dis onne t the atta hed power ords, tele ommuni ations systems, networks, and modems
before you open the devi e overs, unless instru ted otherwise in the installation and onfiguration
pro edures.
• Conne t and dis onne t ables as des ribed in the following tables when installing, moving, or
opening overs on this produ t or atta hed devi es.

1. Turn e erything OFF.
2. First, attach all cables to de ices.
3. Attach signal cables to connectors.
4. Attach power cords to outlet.
5. Turn de ice ON.

CAUTION:
When repla ing the lithium battery, use only Part Number 45C1566 or an equivalent type battery
re ommended by the manufa turer. If your system has a module ontaining a lithium battery, repla e
it only with the same module type made by the same manufa turer. The battery ontains lithium and
an explode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of. Do not:
• Throw or immerse into water
• Heat to more than 100°C (212°F)
• Repair or disassemble
Dispose of the battery as required by lo al ordinan es or regulations.

CAUTION:
When laser produ ts (su h as CD-ROMs, DVD-ROM drives, fiber opti devi es, or transmitters) are
installed, note the following:
• Do not remove the overs. Removing the overs of the laser produ t ould result in exposure to
hazardous laser radiation. There are no servi eable parts inside the devi e.
• Use of ontrols or adjustments or performan e of pro edures other than those spe ified herein
might result in hazardous radiation exposure.
DANGER
Some laser produ ts ontain an embedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode. Note the following:
Laser radiation when open. Do not stare into the beam, do not view dire tly with opti al
instruments, and avoid dire t exposure to the beam.

CAUTION:
Use safe pra ti es when lifting.
CAUTION:
The power ontrol button on the devi e and the power swit h on the power supply do not turn off the
ele tri al urrent supplied to the devi e. The devi e also might have more than one power ord. To
remove all ele tri al urrent from the devi e, ensure that all power ords are dis onne ted from the
power sour e.
