Thischapterpresentsthefollowingsafetinformationthatouneedtobefamiliarwithbeforeouservicea
Lenovonotebookcomputer.
eneralsafety
Followtheserulestoensuregeneralsafet:
•Observegoodhousekeepingintheareaofthemachinesduringandaftermaintenance.
•Whenliftinganheavobject:
1.Makesurethatoucanstandsafelwithoutslipping.
2.Distributetheweightoftheobjectequallbetweenourfeet.
3.Useaslowliftingforce.Nevermovesuddenlortwistwhenouattempttolift.
4.Liftbstandingorbpushingupwithourlegmuscles;thisactionremovesthestrainfromthe
musclesinourback.Donotattempttoliftanyobjectthatweighsmorethan16kg(35lb)orthat
youthinkistooheavyforyou.
•Donotperformanactionthatcauseshazardstothecustomer,orthatmakestheequipmentunsafe.
•Beforeoustartthemachine,makesurethatotherservicetechniciansandthecustomer'spersonnelare
notinahazardousposition.
•Placeremovedcoversandotherpartsinasafeplace,awafromallpersonnel,whileouareservicing
themachine.
•Keepourtoolcaseawafromwalkareassothatotherpeoplewillnottripoverit.
•Donotwearlooseclothingthatcanbetrappedinthemovingpartsofamachine.Makesurethatour
sleevesarefastenedorrolledupaboveourelbows.Ifourhairislong,fastenit.
•Inserttheendsofournecktieorscarfinsideclothingorfastenitwithanon-conductiveclip,about8
centimeters(3inches)fromtheend.
•Donotwearjewelr,chains,metal-frameeeglasses,ormetalfastenersforourclothing.
Attention:Metalobjectsaregoodelectricalconductors.
•Wearsafetglasseswhenouarehammering,drilling,soldering,cuttingwire,attachingsprings,using
solvents,orworkinginanotherconditionsthatmightbehazardoustoourees.
•Afterservice,reinstallallsafetshields,guards,labels,andgroundwires.Replaceansafetdevice
thatiswornordefective.
•Reinstallallcoverscorrectlbeforereturningthemachinetothecustomer.
•Fanlouversonthemachinehelptopreventoverheatingofinternalcomponents.Donotobstructfan
louversorcoverthemwithlabelsorstickers.
Electricalsafety
Observethefollowingruleswhenworkingonelectricalequipment.
Important:Useonlapprovedtoolsandtestequipment.Somehandtoolshavehandlescoveredwithasoft
materialthatdoesnotinsulateouwhenworkingwithliveelectricalcurrents.Mancustomershave,near
theirequipment,rubberfloormatsthatcontainsmallconductivefiberstodecreaseelectrostaticdischarges.
Donotusethistpeofmattoprotectourselffromelectricalshock.
•Findtheroomemergencpower-off(EPO)switch,disconnectingswitch,orelectricaloutlet.Ifanelectrical
accidentoccurs,oucanthenoperatetheswitchorunplugthepowercordquickl.
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardousconditionsornearequipmentthathashazardousvoltages.
•Disconnectallpowerbefore:
–Performingamechanicalinspection
–Workingnearpowersupplies

–Removingorinstallingmainunits
•Beforeoustarttoworkonthemachine,unplugthepowercord.Ifoucannotunplugit,askthecustomer
topower-offthewallboxthatsuppliespowertothemachine,andtolockthewallboxintheoffposition.
•Ifouneedtoworkonamachinethathasexposeelectricalcircuits,observethefollowingprecautions:
–Ensurethatanotherperson,familiarwiththepower-offcontrols,isnearou.
Attention:Anotherpersonmustbetheretoswitchoffthepower,ifnecessar.
–Useonlonehandwhenworkingwithpowered-onelectricalequipment;keeptheotherhandinour
pocketorbehindourback.
Attention:Anelectricalshockcanoccuronlwhenthereisacompletecircuit.Bobservingtheabove
rule,oumapreventacurrentfrompassingthroughourbod.
–Whenusingtesters,setthecontrolscorrectlandusetheapprovedprobeleadsandaccessoriesfor
thattester.
–Standonsuitablerubbermats(obtainedlocall,ifnecessar)toinsulateoufromgroundssuchas
metalfloorstripsandmachineframes.
Observethespecialsafetprecautionswhenouworkwithverhighvoltages;Instructionsforthese
precautionsareinthesafetsectionsofmaintenanceinformation.Useextremecarewhenmeasuring
highvoltages.
•Regularlinspectandmaintainourelectricalhandtoolsforsafeoperationalcondition.
•Donotusewornorbrokentoolsandtesters.
•Neverassumethatpowerhasbeendisconnectedfromacircuit.First,checkthatithasbeenpoweredoff.
•Alwaslookcarefullforpossiblehazardsinourworkarea.Examplesofthesehazardsaremoistfloors,
non-groundedpowerextensioncables,powersurges,andmissingsafetgrounds.
•Donottouchliveelectricalcircuitswiththereflectivesurfaceofaplasticdentalmirror.Thesurfaceis
conductive;suchtouchingcancausepersonalinjurandmachinedamage.
•Donotservicethefollowingpartswiththepoweronwhentheareremovedfromtheirnormaloperating
placesinamachine:
–Powersupplunits
–Pumps
–Blowersandfans
–Motorgenerators
–Similarunitsaslistedabove
Thispracticeensurescorrectgroundingoftheunits.
•Ifanelectricalaccidentoccurs:
–Usecaution;donotbecomeavictimourself.
–Switchoffpower.
–Sendanotherpersontogetmedicalaid.
Safetyinspectionguide
Thepurposeofthisinspectionguideistoassistouinidentifingpotentiallunsafeconditions.Aseach
machinewasdesignedandbuilt,requiredsafetitemswereinstalledtoprotectusersandservicetechnicians
frominjur.Thisguideaddressesonlthoseitems.Youshouldusegoodjudgmenttoidentifpotential
safethazardsduetoattachmentofnon-Lenovofeaturesoroptionsnotcoveredbthisinspectionguide.
Ifanunsafeconditionsarepresent,oumustdeterminehowserioustheapparenthazardcouldbeand
whetheroucancontinuewithoutfirstcorrectingtheproblem.
Considertheseconditionsandthesafethazardsthepresent:
•Electricalhazards,especiallprimarpower(primarvoltageontheframecancauseseriousorfatal
electricalshock)
•Explosivehazards,suchasadamagedcathoderatube(CRT)faceorabulgingcapacitor
•Mechanicalhazards,suchaslooseormissinghardware

Todeterminewhetherthereareanpotentiallunsafeconditions,usethefollowingchecklistatthebeginning
ofeverservicetask.Beginthecheckswiththepoweroff,andthepowercorddisconnected.
Checklist:
1.Checkexteriorcoversfordamage(loose,broken,orsharpedges).
2.Poweroffthecomputer.Disconnectthepowercord.
3.Checkthepowercordfor:
a.Athird-wiregroundconnectoringoodcondition.Useametertomeasurethird-wireground
continuitfor0.1ohmorlessbetweentheexternalgroundpinandtheframeground.
b.Thepowercordshouldbetheauthorizedtpespecifiedforourcomputer.Goto:

c.Insulationmustnotbefraedorworn.
4.Checkforcrackedorbulgingbatteries.
5.Removethecover.
6.Checkforanobviousnon-Lenovoalterations.Usegoodjudgmentastothesafetofannon-Lenovo
alterations.
7.Checkinsidetheunitforanobviousunsafeconditions,suchasmetalfilings,contamination,wateror
otherliquids,orsignsoffireorsmokedamage.
8.Checkforworn,fraed,orpinchedcables.
9.Checkthatthepower-supplcoverfasteners(screwsorrivets)havenotbeenremovedortamperedwith.
Handlingdevicesthataresensitivetoelectrostaticdischarge
Ancomputerpartcontainingtransistorsorintegratedcircuits(ICs)shouldbeconsideredsensitiveto
electrostaticdischarge(ESD).ESDdamagecanoccurwhenthereisadifferenceinchargebetweenobjects.
ProtectagainstESDdamagebequalizingthechargesothatthemachine,thepart,theworkmat,andthe
personhandlingthepartareallatthesamecharge.
Notes:
1.Useproduct-specificESDprocedureswhentheexceedtherequirementsnotedhere.
2.MakesurethattheESDprotectivedevicesouusehavebeencertified(ISO9000)asfulleffective.
WhenhandlingESD-sensitiveparts:
•Keepthepartsinprotectivepackagesuntiltheareinsertedintotheproduct.
•Avoidcontactwithotherpeople.
•Wearagroundedwriststrapagainstourskintoeliminatestaticonourbod.
•Preventthepartfromtouchingourclothing.Mostclothingisinsulativeandretainsachargeeven
whenouarewearingawriststrap.
•Useagroundedworkmattoprovideastatic-freeworksurface.Thematisespeciallusefulwhen
handlingESD-sensitivedevices.
•Selectagroundingsstem,suchasthoselistedbelow,toprovideprotectionthatmeetsthespecific
servicerequirement.
Note:TheuseofagroundingsstemtoguardagainstESDdamageisdesirablebutnotnecessar.
–AttachtheESDgroundcliptoanframeground,groundbraid,orgreen-wireground.
–Whenworkingonadouble-insulatedorbatter-operatedsstem,useanESDcommongroundor
referencepoint.Youcanusecoaxorconnector-outsideshellsonthesesstems.
–Usetheroundgroundprongoftheacplugonac-operatedcomputers.
