Chapter 1. Safety information
This chapter presents the fo owing safety information that you need to be fami iar with before you service a
Chromebook.

General safety
Fo ow these ru es to ensure genera safety:
• Observe good housekeeping in the area of the machines during and after maintenance.
• When ifting any heavy object:
1. Ensure that you can stand safe y without s ipping.
2. Distribute the weight of the object equa y between your feet.
3. Use a s ow ifting force. Never move sudden y or twist when you attempt to ift.
4. Lift by standing or by pushing up with your eg musc es; this action removes the strain from the
musc es in your back. Do not attempt to ift any object that weighs more than 16 kg (35 b) or that you
think is too heavy for you.
• Do not perform any action that causes hazards to the customer, or that makes the equipment unsafe.
• Before you start the machine, ensure that other service technicians and the customer’s personne are not
in a hazardous position.
• P ace removed covers and other parts in a safe p ace, away from a personne , whi e you are servicing the
machine.
• Keep your too case away from wa k areas so that other peop e wi not trip over it.
• Do not wear oose c othing that can be trapped in the moving parts of a machine. Ensure that your s eeves
are fastened or ro ed up above your e bows. If your hair is ong, fasten it.
• Insert the ends of your necktie or scarf inside c othing or fasten it with a nonconductive c ip, about 8
centimeters (3 inches) from the end.
• Do not wear jewe ry, chains, meta -frame eyeg asses, or meta fasteners for your c othing, because meta
objects are good e ectrica conductors.
• Wear safety g asses when you are hammering, dri ing, so dering, cutting wire, attaching springs, using
so vents, or working in any other conditions that might be hazardous to your eyes.
• After service, reinsta a safety shie ds, guards, abe s, and ground wires. Rep ace any safety device that
is worn or defective.
• Reinsta a covers correct y before returning the machine to the customer.
• Fan ouvers on the machine he p to prevent overheating of interna components. Do not obstruct fan
ouvers or cover them with abe s or stickers.
Electrical safety
Observe the fo owing ru es when working on e ectrica equipment.

Important:
• Use on y approved too s and test equipment. Some hand too s have hand es covered with a soft materia
that does not insu ate you when working with ive e ectrica currents.
• Many customers have, near their equipment, rubber f oor mats that contain sma conductive fibers to
decrease e ectrostatic discharges (ESD). Do not use this type of mat to protect yourse f from e ectrica
shock.
• Find the room emergency power-off (EPO) switch, disconnecting switch, or e ectrica out et. If an e ectrica
accident occurs, you can then operate the switch or unp ug the power cord quick y.
• Do not work a one under hazardous conditions or near equipment that has hazardous vo tages.
• Disconnect a power before:
– Performing a mechanica inspection
– Working near power supp ies
– Removing or insta ing main units
• Before you start to work on the machine, unp ug the power cord. If you cannot unp ug it, ask the customer
to power off the wa box that supp ies power to the machine, and to ock the wa box in the off position.
• If you need to work on a machine that has exposed e ectrica circuits, observe the fo owing precautions:
– Ensure that another person, fami iar with the power-off contro s, is near you. That person must be there
to switch off the power, if necessary.
– Use on y one hand when working with powered-on e ectrica equipment; keep the other hand in your
pocket or behind your back.
CAUTION:
An electrical shock can occ r only when there is a complete circ it. By observing the above r le,
yo may prevent a c rrent from passing thro gh yo r body.
– When using testers, set the contro s correct y and use the approved probe eads and accessories for
that tester.
– Stand on suitab e rubber mats (obtained oca y, if necessary) to insu ate you from grounds such as
meta f oor strips and machine frames.
Observe the specia safety precautions when you work with very high vo tages. Instructions for these
precautions are in the safety sections of maintenance information. Use extreme care when measuring high
vo tages.
• Regu ar y inspect and maintain your e ectrica hand too s for safe operationa condition.
• Do not use worn or broken too s and testers.
• Never assume that power has been disconnected from a circuit. First, check that it has been powered off.
• A ways ook carefu y for possib e hazards in your work area. Examp es of these hazards are moist f oors,
nongrounded power extension cab es, power surges, and missing safety grounds.
• Do not touch ive e ectrica circuits with the ref ective surface of a p astic denta mirror. The surface is
conductive; such touching can cause persona injury and machine damage.
• Do not service the fo owing parts with the power on:
– Power supp y units
– Pumps
– B owers and fans
– Motor generators
– Units simi ar to those isted above
This practice ensures correct grounding of the units.
• If an e ectrica accident occurs:
– Use caution; do not become a victim yourse f.
– Switch off power.
– Send another person to get medica aid.

Safety inspection g ide
The purpose of this inspection guide is to assist you in identifying potentia y unsafe conditions. As each
machine was designed and bui t, required safety items were insta ed to protect users and service
technicians from injury. This guide addresses on y those items. You shou d use good judgment to identify
potentia safety hazards due to attachment of non-Lenovo features or options not covered by this inspection
guide.
If any unsafe conditions are present, you must determine how serious the apparent hazard cou d be and
whether you can continue without first correcting the prob em.
Consider these conditions and the safety hazards they present:
• E ectrica hazards, especia y primary power (primary vo tage on the frame can cause serious or fata
e ectrica shock)
• Exp osive hazards, such as a damaged CRT face or a bu ging capacitor
• Mechanica hazards, such as oose or missing hardware
To determine whether there are any potentia y unsafe conditions, use the fo owing check ist at the
beginning of every service task. Begin the checks with the power off, and the power cord disconnected.
Check ist:
1. Check exterior covers for damage ( oose, broken, or sharp edges).
2. Turn off the computer. Disconnect the power cord.
3. Check the power cord for:
a. A third-wire ground connector in good condition. Use a meter to measure third-wire ground
continuity for 0.1 ohm or ess between the externa ground pin and the frame ground.
b. The power cord shou d be the authorized type specified for your computer. Go to: https://
support. enovo.com/parts ookup.
c. Insu ation must not be frayed or worn.
4. Check for cracked or bu ging batteries.
5. Remove the cover.
6. Check for any obvious non-Lenovo a terations. Use good judgment as to the safety of any non-Lenovo
a terations.
7. Check inside the unit for any obvious unsafe conditions, such as meta fi ings, contamination, water or
other iquids, or signs of fire or smoke damage.
8. Check for worn, frayed, or pinched cab es.
9. Check that the power-supp y cover fasteners (screws or rivets) have not been removed or tampered
with.
Handling devices that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge
Any computer part containing transistors or integrated circuits (ICs) shou d be considered sensitive to
e ectrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD damage can occur when there is a difference in charge between objects.
Protect against ESD damage by equa izing the charge so that the machine, the part, the work mat, and the
person hand ing the part are a at the same charge.
Notes:
1. Use product-specific ESD procedures when they exceed the requirements noted here.

2. Ensure that the ESD protective devices you use have been certified (ISO 9000) as fu y effective.
When hand ing ESD-sensitive parts:
• Keep the parts in protective packages unti they are inserted into the product.
• Avoid contact with other peop e.
• Wear a grounded wrist strap against your skin to e iminate static on your body.
• Prevent the part from touching your c othing. Most c othing is insu ative and retains a charge even when
you are wearing a wrist strap.
• Use a grounded work mat to provide a static-free work surface. The mat is especia y usefu when
hand ing ESD-sensitive devices.
• Se ect a grounding system, such as those isted be ow, to provide protection that meets the specific
service requirement.
Note: The use of a grounding system to guard against ESD damage is desirab e but not necessary.
– Attach the ESD ground c ip to any frame ground, ground braid, or green-wire ground.
– When working on a doub e-insu ated or battery-operated system, use an ESD common ground or
reference point. You can use coax or connector-outside she s on these systems.
– Use the round ground prong of the ac p ug on ac-operated computers.
Gro nding req irements
E ectrica grounding of the computer is required for operator safety and correct system function. Proper
grounding of the e ectrica out et can be verified by a certified e ectrician.
